Title: Mix's Protector WIP (Approved Official Kit, Brigade Status: Approved 8-2-16)
Post by: Mi'ix on May 02, 2016, 08:48 PM
So I have already posted my protector bucket over in the helmet section, so
I won't re-post that info here, but this thread will serve as the general work in progress for my protector build.  That said, let's get to it.

First off, my vest was finished today by my very talented seamstress mother.  Take a look.

Anyways, this kit will take some time because I want to do it right.  Any progress I make will be posted here.

Thanks for looking.

Considering I'm sourcing a ton of my parts from you, yes. Yes, you can.

Two protectors in same clan.....nice
Looking good Mix, what type of paint did you use on your ears, I'd like to redo mine, I like your colour, is it sand or a gold, humbrol?

How far are you along with your build

I used Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow for the ear caps. You can buy it either as a rattle can or their acrylic paint, which I used to airbrush.

Helmet still needs the visor and range finder, but I only have the helmet, vest, and the jetpack is on order.

Ok, so my soft parts from Manofwar studios came in today and I can't tell you guys enough how happy in with them. Also, a two piece flight suit is where it's at. Eventually, I'll dye the suit like Boba’s in ESB.

Pile o' soft parts: Fett Boots, ROTJ Flight Suit, GirthBelt, and ESB Gloves.

Looking really good.
A word of caution on the MOW suit, with it being two parts it is great for getting in and out of, but when you tuck the shirt into the pants and add your gear on, the weight of the gear will want to pull the pants down and give you droopy drawers. I took and added four button snaps, two in front, two in back to snap the suit halves together and I haven't had a problem since.

You can see where I added the snaps on the shirt front and back.

No droopy drawers.

This is fantastic advice!    Thank you very much!

In other news, the patches for my gloves came in today!

Ok, so I dyed my MOW flightsuit, spats, and extra pouches today with some RIT dye.  1oz Evening Blue and .5oz Pearl Gray to give me that good ol' ESB color. The spats and pouches got a little too blue because I dipped them for too long. The two piece flightsuit, on the other hand came out very nice.

This thing is a chameleon. I say that because it's one of three colors depending on the light; light gray, off white, or blue-gray. Either way, I'm very pleased about the disonance between my vest a suit.

In other news, patches are on my gloves and I've sewn on the black straps to my girthbelt. I just need to make some adjustment holes for the strap and add some grommets to it for a better finished look.

Yes, the spats and the extra pouches have some extra blue to them, BUT that's nothing a little weathering won't fix.

Alright, with the help of Aria, I got the first round of weathering done on my flight-suit today at the Tra'cor clan armor party.

Here's the before and after.

Also, I've been informed that my jetpack from NME has shipped so we're in business there too!

A lot of black chalk.

I'm going to go back through tomorrow with my airbrush and add more black and then some brown. Boots will get an acrylic wash as well. It's almost a shame to dirty such nice parts.  ;D

Alright, so I've been making steady progress on my soft parts, but I'm sure everyone is bored of that.

I did get two major pieces of the puzzle in the mail today...

The Mitrinomon Z-6, courtesy of NME Props and a set of armor from Red Krayt Dragon.  The armor is perfectly sized and shaped to me and with a bit of cleaning up, will make the look of this build THAT much better.  Still working out an attachment method to the vest so I'll post pics once that's done.

I also seem to have a problem with jetpacks and I want to put paint on the darn thing so bad, but I'm going to wait until I get the appropriate hardware to attach the rocket and thrusters to make transport much easier.
Title: Re: Mix's Protector WIP
Post by: Mi'ix on Jun 15, 2016, 10:18 PM
Bit of progress tonight.  I've spent the past few days in my basement cleaning up the edges of the armor plates and cutting out the appropriate details on the knees.  Next step is getting some paint on these plates, but I'm going to wait until I get everything mounted to where it's supposed to be on the vest.  That endeavor will be sometime this weekend.

More importantly, I got the slots cut out for my chest display, which Dha Bral walked me through, of course.   :P  Just a bit of clean up left around the edges of the slots and we're good to go there.

Title: Re: Mix's Protector WIP
Post by: Mi'ix on Jun 17, 2016, 08:17 AM
Alright, so I had the day off yesterday so I was able to get more armor related things done, which puts me THAT much closer to paint.

The holes for the collar studs have been drilled which allows the backplate to connect to the actual collar piece.

Knees have been assembled with their inserts. I glued washers to some snaps for more surface area so my knees are pretty much ready for paint. Elastic straps will be coupled with velcro on the Flightsuit to help out holding them in place.

Funny thing about RKD is the cod/kidney plate attachment was too small so I had to rig up an extension with some sintra I had laying around. Adding some supports on the back end helped shore up the extension also I was able to drill my holes for the stud and attach the two pieces together. Minor shaping and some bonding left to go.

I'm hoping to get some of these pieces attached to my vest this weekend, so wish me luck with that!

Title: Re: Mix's Protector WIP
Post by: Mi'ix on Jun 19, 2016, 12:40 AM
Thanks Vhett!

Alright, so I've made some more progress in these past few days, namely getting some paint on a majority of the plates.

Primed!

So shiney!

...and with the help of my glorious clan Ver'alor, Aria, I was able to get the plates attached to my vest. Don't worry, still some minor spacing issues to resolve to address the pinching around the ab plate, but nothing that can't be fixed!

Still haven't painted the cod piece and back plate as I'm waiting on some minor fixes and additional clean up to take place.

I cannot take credit for that!

Plates from Red Krayt Dragon is the primo stuff, IMO.  Came out of the box well sized and shaped.

Plates and spacing look niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.....
Title: Re: Mix's Protector WIP
Post by: Mi'ix on Jun 20, 2016, 02:52 PM
Thanks again, Vhett.

I've been talking to Dha Bral and Raestin about the plate spacing.  Their concern is the crunching of the ab plate from the chest tabs.  I should be able to make some minute adjustments and we should be good to go there.  In the meantime, I was able to make some more progress on my lazy Sunday.

Masking fluid removed.  Lots and lots of tweezing involved here.

Close up of the knees.  These guys, along with my shoulder plates, and gaunts (when I get around to them) will just have their final coat right over this layer of primer.  No funny colors for these guys this time.

Don't mind mah feet.  The "funny" colors will be the accent layer of color beneath the green to give the armor a little pop.  Similar to Boba and what I have on my first kit.

Re-attached to my vest and hung up with the masking fluid removed.  I'm very happy with the results on this.  Unfortunately, I ran out of masking fluid in this endeavor and my new stuff won't arrive until sometime later this week.  Until then, I've got plenty of other stuff to work on.

I also got the hardware attached to my jet pack that will keep it attached to my back.  Should be seeing a paint up of that soon.  I'm sure that will really put my painting skills to the test!

Thanks guys!  I'm so glad you like where this build is going.

I'm still waiting on my masking fluid, but in the meantime, tonight will be focused on getting my cod/kidney armor to sit right, and starting to clean up the various jetpack parts.  I need to look into acquiring some more hardware to get the rocket and thrusters mounted.

More updates to come!

The little metal bits (studs, toe spikes, etc...) are the little details, to me, that will make the kit!

Title: Re: Mix's Protector WIP
Post by: Mi'ix on Jun 27, 2016, 10:01 PM
Ok!

It has been awhile and things have been happening, but I haven't had time to post as this weekend was pretty busy with the clan, etc...

So, I had to deal with the conundrum of how to deal with the gaping hole in my NME rocket pack. For those of you that don't know, I have to make this rocket removable for easier transport. The problem is where to mount said hardware with the hole. I used resin to fill the hole, and a wooden frame to set the bolt. I'm going to let it setup over night just to make sure everything is ok.

The jetpacks thrusters also received the same treatment. I'll post the results once I know how everything turned out.

And finally....

GREEN ALL THE THINGS!  ;D

Seriously, how could anyone ever tire of green.

That's all for now...oh, and range finder tax.

Ok, so more progress tonight.

Gaunt shells connected with some pop rivets (just like my first kit.

Shiny jetpack! Base cost of "aluminum" put down over the original gray primer. I'll do some masking fluid, add another layer of primer and then start with the colors.

Knees darts added to mah knees. Making sure the placement is good before final paint. Don't want no Steve Buscemi knee darts.

Ok, so to go with all the purty armor I have, I needed a blaster for pew pew purposes....

DC-15A, all nekkid.

Comes apart for easy transport!  This was a plus to me as this thing is over 5 feet long.

Primed and "metal" coated with Rustoleum aluminum! (I didn't get pictures of the primer, but it's there)

Beginnings of cape weathering.  I did a lot more after this picture was taken, but I let the blowtorch burn a little too long resulting in the large "blaster" burn.  Don't worry!  I was able to play around with the damage and come up with a nice finished product.  (no pictures yet)

I did a thing, or rather, a lot of different things that led to one obnoxious thing.

The pack's paint job is obviously based off of Boba's in ROTJ, with some differences, mainly purple rocket, no piano keys, and some colors switched around to avoid being identical.

This what probably the single most complex thing I've ever painted, let alone weathered. It's not done yet, but certainly closer.

Thank you, Kai!

We're going to have a very good bunch of protectors when all is said and done.

I had some time tonight to add my brigade sigil to the left shoulder plate. The Protectors are the only ones who can add the sigil to their armor prior to being accepted into the brigades from what I understand, so on it went.

I believe the only other thing I need to do is put together my shin tools and we'll be ready for pre-app.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to post some pics of the upgrades I've made to the kit over the past year of its life!  I checked with Raestin before necroposting so if this is in violation, blame him!

So I wanted to take a minute and post the updates I've made to the kit and some of my adventures I've had in it.  You all were so wonderful and inspirational in getting this thing off the ground so I figured you guys would want to see what it's been up to.

Updates...

My shot at a house sigil on the right shoulder plate.  I liked the triangle from the U.S. armored divisions of old so I went with that and added Jaster's feather and Mando'a number 2 for the second brigade approved Protector!

I added the chest sigil from the Marvel Era Protectors.  Really simple, but adds a nice detail to the kit.

Wrist darts from Machine Craft Replicas, because why not?!

Speaking of MCR, I added one of Dakota's beacons and stabilizer!  The beacon glows courtesy of a little battery pack sodered to a LED with built in resistors.  Such a simple upgrade, but it added a lot to the pack!   :)

Up, up and away in front of the Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit.  Thanks to Cosfame for these wonderful shots.

Anyways,  thanks for indulging me for a moment.  If you want to check out how crazy I really am, click here  here (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=135483.msg1752301;topicseen#new) for my ESB Fett build!

I checked with Raestin before necroposting so if this is in violation, blame him!

It is never a Necro when it is your own thread... but I will take any excuse to blame Raestin for something :P

Upgrades look fantastic, it is kits like this one that make me want to throw all my plans out of the window and make a protector

Hello Everyone,

It's been a little while and with the epic collapse of photobucket, I still have to go back and fix some of the links in this thread, but I want to show you all my new helmet!

I recently picked up a B pull FettPride ESB bucket from Wasted Fett over on the Dented Helmet.  Really a beautiful helmet, and I don't have to twist it to get it off my head like a bottle cap!     Don't worry this is an entirely different helmet from my ESB Boba build.  I plan on picking that one back up once I get more of the parts.  This helmet served for some GREAT practice to hone some of the weathering techniques I'm going to need for Boba.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

Straight from the box and so fresh!

Had to put all the buckets I had in the house together for a family shot.  I resisted pulling Annie and Oliver out for this one, which I'm sure Aria appreciates.   :P

The MK II now has silver!  Francis, my first ever bucket, has his new (but still old Green) in this shot.

Previously I had sworn by the masking fluid I used produced by a Japanese company called Gunji Sanyo.  This purple stuff is made by Humbrol and is what I will be using from now on.  That stuff came off with one pull!

Back panels with the white at gray added topically.  That's something I'll be doing a lot more of as I move on to Fett.

Put a layer of gray over the face with the new masking fluid and we have an idea of how the weathering will shape up!

Now with more green...and red for that matter!  I'm keeping the keyslots gray for a little ROTJ vibe on this one.

More fun with topical weathering on the dome.  Way way more scratches and dings to add.  I may or may not have beat this thing with a rubber boot sole to get some nice marks.

Admittedly I'm a little nuts.  Sometimes I carry it around the house to look at while I do other stuff.  I very much like looking at it, but it gives me time to think about things I can do better, or about the upcoming steps in order to get this thing completed.  I've got the eyes, triangles, and custom borden added here.  I've got some better lit shots below.,,,

Killstripes!

Also, mock visor install.  As part of the package, Wasted Fett includes a visor with his casts that fits perfectly.

Finally, weathering.

I forgot to mention that I'm using a hard hat suspension system to keep this thing on my head.  Fans were also installed with a servo kit, RF lights, and a hearing aid eventually planned.

Got to take it out on a test run at Capital City Comicon in Lansing, MI this past weekend.  Loved every minute of it.

Great looking helmet, I really dig your color choices, nails that protector look 100%. And your weathering techniques are very well done. I'd be carrying that thing around the house all the time as well
