Title: Antoa's fist Mando kit - softs - Completed!
Post by: Mirdala Senaar on Oct 01, 2016, 10:44 PM
Here is my original post for my concept

http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=121352.msg1636528#msg1636528

I made a trip to the fabric store today.  Here are my fabrics:

Red duck cloth for the vest. Purple poly/cotton for the sash belt, Kama and cape. Red cotton (unfortunately the poly/cotton was too orange) for the Kama lining.

I was also able to get a mock up done of my flack vest. I had a princess seam bodice pattern that I have used several times for my Irish Dance dresses. I just had to add in a bit of ease so that it would fit over my 'flight suit.'

Does everything look OK so far? Thanks!

The flight suit is some C9 Champion gear I picked up at Target.  The boots are booties I got on Amazon.

Everything looks very good so far.  I used a princess seam dress for my flak vests as well and it works great.

The only thing you'll want to keep in mind is that your shirt hem will need to be hidden. You can either hide it under belts and waist items, or tuck it into your pants. (I personally tuck mine into my pants just to be on the safe side).

I like your colors - that purple is really pretty.

Thanks! I will probably end up tucking my shirt in. I don't know if my sash belt will cover it when untucked.

It took me the better part of the day, but I got my vest 95% done. I still need to sew in the Velcro for the neck seal flap and I have to press the seam at the zipper to make it more invisible.

In the pictures it is laced up with some spare shoe laces I had - the actual laces will be black.

More sewing planned for this weekend!

In the mean time, here are some pics I took during the progress of my vest. Towards the end I forgot to take pictures.

I was able to get my sash belt, loin cloth and kama almost done. I still need to sew on the Velcro - everything is just pinned to the sash belt right now.

Excuse the duck butt in this picture - the kama will overlap in the back, but there was a pin in the way

I am going to add a purple panel behind the lacing in the back of the belt so you won't see the red if there is a gap.

Soft parts are looking good! Just a small little thing that I noticed, there's a champion logo at the bottom of the pants (visible in the picture where you're facing the side). Just make sure that's covered with spats or armor or tucked in and you should be good!

Thanks! The logo will definitely be gone or covered. I forgot to mention that.

***edit***
Hot steamy iron an a bit of picking and the logo is gone. Yay!

I was able to paint my loincloth today and sketch out the designs on my Kama with chalk.

Thanks!

In addition to getting my armor started this weekend, I was able to finish up the painting on my kama. I just need to attach the Velcro for the pieces and I have to make my cape.

I've been busy with my armor since my softs are just about finished.

My gloves did arrive today though:

The only thing I have left to sew (and then paint) is my cape. It's all coming together!

Those look like some nice gloves. :) Any logos on the band, or did were you fortunate enough to find some gloves without a logo?

They are logo free! Scored them for $16 on Amazon. The pictures showed a logo, but they arrived without one. Yay!

They are a tad big, but I have tiny hands, so I figured any glove I'd fine would be, which is why I went with the fingerless.

Sweet! I've had issues finding logo-less ones, so nice job!  :)

Fingerless is a nice choice in the long run to be able to do things like use the phone while in kit. (It's important!)

Nope, no logos. Which is odd because I have the same gloves, full finger, in green and they have a sewn in logo on the wrist strap.

This weekend I was able to sew the last piece of my softs, my cape.

Here it is with the rough sketch of the design on it.

Here it is with the silver paint

I just need to do the black outline and shading.

All that is left is to sew on all the Velcro.

It looks beautiful, but did you double check with the app team if the bird/Celtic knots will be OK? It looks very earthy to me and I'd hate to see them kick you back because of it.

They were in her initial design and got an okay at that time. And we've seen at least one other official kit with celtic knots on it. If someone from the app team wants to chime in before she goes any further though that would be great.

I agree that the bird outline is too earthy. I've modified it a bit (in a way that means I won't have to make a whole new cape and start the painting from scratch). Here's a quick sketch:

Thoughts?

I like it. It looks a little more "Star Wars-ish" to me with the elongated feathers.

I'll poke Kris or Kyra to weigh in on it if they haven't in a day or so. :)

That design should be fine; There's a similar in universe bird so you should be good.

Just to clarify, which design? The one already painted or the addition of the loopy wingtips?

Ooooh. Shiny! I love the second design.

On a more serious note just for the record - yes Celtic designs are fine, we just prefer to see them based on a Star Wars animal rather than a more Earth animal though. Also kinda cool when people ask what the dragon on your helmet is and you can launch into the story about painting it on to commemorate the successful hunt of a krayt dragon out in the wastes of Tattooine...

Finished painting my cape today. I am really happy with how it turned out.

Here it is with the silver and the outline:

And here is the completed cape (minus some light weathering):

I also started my leather bits too. I was able to cut out the pouch piece and dye it. And I dyed my belt as well. I forgot to take pictures.

Pick up a new heavy duty sewing machine this week. Gah. I wish I had had it from the beginning (and before when I was making my Irish Dance dresses). Goes through tons of layers like butter!

Broke it in by sewing the Velcro on my softs (and on MysteriousStranger's). I just have to position the plates and sew all of that Velcro and they will be done.

I also worked on my leather pouch. I am hand sewing it and have found that an awl is a dangerous thing for me to have.   :o luckily we have a drawer full of band-aids.

No new pictures this week, but I will probably try on all the softs soon.

Finished my belt pouch!

Hand dyed and hand sewn.

I also got a good start on my holsters. Pieces are cut out and dyed. I just need to sew them and figure out my attaching mechanism and thigh straps.

Thanks guys! I am having fun doing all the leatherwork.

Very nice! What are the odds I can get you to make me a pouch someday? That turned out fantastic. :)

Odds are decent.  ;)

We got a lot done this weekend. I finished one of my holsters (minus the holes for the hooks to attach to my belt). I just need to sew the other one and then the only thing I have left on my softs is to sew the Velcro on my vest for my plates.

Here is my finished holster:

Ok, I just remembered that I had changed my boots from the original ones in my pictures. I assume the new ones are good, but I just want to make sure.

Yes, those boots should be fine, as long as the zippers are on the insides (which it looks like they are). They look comfy too.
