Title: New Mandalorian bucket build thread
Post by: Lynn TXP 0369 on Nov 08, 2017, 04:41 PM
I got my new Mandalorian Protector bucket today.
It is an FPH2 ESB

Surprisingly it is not a lot bigger then my Target helmet, It is more accurate and shaped correctly, but size wise, it is not much bigger.

Well, I had to jump right into this bad boy!! LOL!!

Visor cut out.

Holes drilled
(http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/forums/attachments/n47jbrq-jpg.157553/)

Started with a square file to open them up.

Next a rectangle file to get the skinny spots.

(http://Key slots done. Not perfect as I had to take a bit more out because my pilot holes weren't perfectly lined up, but it will be OK when the PC board is installed and all painted, you won't even notice it.)

Visor install parts.
Mirror hangers, Chicago screw screw part, brass thumb screw to fit Chicago screw.
I may have to bend and test mirror hangers to fit, but this is my tried and true method of visor installs.

You work fast, sir!

I'm having nightmarish flashbacks to filing my own keyslots out!

A little more done today.
Visor Chicago screw bolts epoxied in place. I won't bolt the visor in place until I let the epoxie sit for 24 hours.

Ear holes marked and drilled.

Helmet ear holes drilled. For some reason I had a heck of a time drilling the right ear cap top locations.

Ear cap installed. I put too long a screw in the ear top and I dimpled the ear out a bit, I'll have to sand that flat.

More done.
Visor is in place with Chicago screws and mirror hangers.
Ears bolts are epoxied in. I put in three bolts each as they had a slight bow to them not allowing them to lay flat and I tried several times to heat them up and get them to lay flat without success  so I decided this was the better way to go.

I had too much mandible movement for my liking, so I redid the bottom visor bracing.
Ears are mounted,I used a longer bolt on the bottom to hold my chin strap.

Trying to install servo, but failing, it is binding and not even mounted yet, I need to get some kind of coupler to extend it a bit.

Love the gold, Lynn.

I've got two range finder servo kits that I have yet to install, both on my Protector and Boba.

Thanks!!  I love the look on my present MP bucket as I wanted to replicate the "orange look" on the comic pic but I don't want the ears a true orange like the visor top brim like on my present MP bucket. I can't justify the cost of $160 JC27 kits when I'm into RC cars have extra radios and gear around and use a bit of ingenuity yo make it work. I want to get a new RF topper kit from Shapeways that will be able to have the electronics in the top. Mine won't be movie accurate as far as the blinking,, but it should work OK for the effect.

Ears are done.
Green started on dome and rear insert. I used the olden day paint of Moss green that used to be used BITD and was the must have for Boba Fett paint. I still have to pull off the liquid mask of the rear insert.

Battle scar added. I got most of the main colors done, I still got to do the red front and back. Main design details are done and I can then start to weather it up.

My eyes are going screwy and I'm forgetting where I'm at and what stage.. LOL!

I'll do final assembly when I get more parts in.
I got some parts coming from Shapeways to replace the RF topper, so I hopefully can contain the lights to the top. I will also add dental files in back.

Servo shaft extension test fitting.

Drilled stalk and helmet with a 3/8" bit to fit shaft. drilled 17/64" hole for grub screw, taped hole with #6 tap. Worked like a charm.

Test servo fit.
Nothing here is permanently done and only test fit to see how it works, but it once I get to know how the servo is set and how much to cut off the servo shaft it will be done.

Helmet is done except for the electronics and chin strap.
The complete RF topper is from Shapeways, I hope to contain the electronics inside as it is fully hollow inside top and bottom. The red dental files in the back are from Shapeways as well.

Servo is now mounted and fully functional pending on how I decide to power it.

Hey Lynn!

Did you buy a servo kit from someone or did you make that yourself?  I know people have made them from RC car parts.  I've got two sets.  One from Fettronics and the other from Salamanderking.

I got the servo off eBay and the servo extension from Servo city. I still haven't decided on how I want to power it.

Thanks! I get to test it out this weekend at a local SW night Hockey game. I had issues with the gauntlets coming apart during test fitting with the whole suit and I had to add Velcro to help keep them together.
