Title: The Westar 35-Ori
Post by: Anansi on Sep 03, 2018, 12:27 AM
So I'm thinking of joining the Striker Division as a Gunslinger. I've got plenty of pistols but I need one larger than my others. Since I "upgraded" to a pair of realistic Westar 35s, my animated-style 35s have been collecting dust.

I think this would make a pretty good base for my heavy. Introducing the Westar-35 Ori. With a lengthened barrel, improved venting and a larger, relocated power pack, the Ori can hit harder and farther than your standard 35.

I took a lot of time measuring and putting together a blueprint for this build. To keep the weight down, I decided to use sintra to build the extension. I did some further weight reduction by tapering the bottom. The fun bit was finding a new barrel. Lucky I have a bunch of old nerf blasters laying about.

Then I built out the upper extension and cut out the vents. Pretty good fit.

From there, I cut grooves in the body so the new parts were connected with more than a butt joint. Thankfully, everything slid together pretty easily.

Now I didn't want to layer sintra inside, nor did I want to use bondo on the outside so I fell back on my friend apoxie sculpt and filled in the gaps. I'll have more pictures later.

About time someone came up with a W-35 hand cannon!  Looking forward to seeing the rest of this!

It is weird that no one has bothered...until now that is. I'm bothering like crazy.  Minor update. The apoxie sculpt set and it was time to sand away the lumps. One of the great things about sculpt is that it doesn't NEED a high grit to get smooth. After knocking things down with 80, 150 will get it pretty nice. I cut a 1/8" deep rectangle in the bottom of the blaster and set in the new magazine. MOAR AMMO! Then I kitbashed a scope out of some PVC and a tube from a water pump.

And that's where we are right now. Stay tuned for more bang bang hijinks.

Great work so far!  I would look into trying to get a higher level of detail like the realistic 35s so you don't have two highly detailed ones and something more with the animated look. This is a great build to follow for modifying existing guns. I cant wait to see how this turns out.

I'm going to give it a go but slowly. I'll be practically carving at this point which isn't my strong suit. That said, from a "in universe" standpoint, I'd say that relocating and increasing the output of the blaster required more heat shielding, giving it a more blocky appearance compared to a standard Westar 35.

Quick update: Took some time today to carve in a few details so it was a little closer to the "realistic" version. It's obviously not going to be 1:1 but Mavik is right, it does give it a little bit more personality.

I still need to add similar details to the other side of the Ori and then it'll be ready to paint. I also made a fusion cutter because who doesn't need a fusion cutter?

Additionally, I continued work on my weapons cleaning/diagnostics kit. I took a broken GPS and turned it into the Blastec WD-87, a weapons diagnostic and repair tool. The the multi-function probe can aid in troubleshooting and preventative maintenance with over 550 weapons from over 200 manufacturers (additional software may be required). Included is a carrying case that can hold the WD-87 and other tools.

Hokay! Much closer to finishing up and it's shaping up nicely.

I ground in some more details and figured out how to mount the scope:

Added some contouring to the grip. It wasn't necessarily uncomfortable to start but now it fits my hand much better.

And of course made sure the other side had some of the same detailing.

One bit of annoyance came up as I was adding the detail, however. When the vendor was nice enough to prime it for me, what they really did was hide all the bondo they used to fill in the errors in the grip. I also found some pretty severe air bubbles in the trigger. Nothing a bit of, you guessed it, apoxie sculpt, couldn't fix. Anyhow, after a little more sanding and cleaning up details, the Ori should be ready for it's first primer coat.

This just keeps getting better and better.   :like:
Is the scope mount a 3-D print, or a leftover Nerf part? Either way, that's pretty ingenious.   ;D

Thank you! That, ner vod, is the spring chamber from a Nerf Recon. It just looked right.

Home stretch, vode. Now that it's Autumn in Gurreck territory, the weather gets a LOT more damp. Not ideal for painting, but luck and Hod Ha'ran were on my side and I got the Ori finished before the humidity got too bad.

I finished up the sanding and hit it with a primer coat.

There were a few bumps that needed smoothing out and then a few more coats. Then-

*fast forward sound*

-and then I masked it off and added back the red stripes from the beginning.

And here we are, pre-weathering. I really wish I didn't have to wreck this paint job but it has to be done.

Well, the rest of the week will give the paint on my Ori (still etched with "ky'ram mureyca" aka Death Kiss aka Venom), time to cure. I'm going to think on weathering this beaut.

That's looking really good! I've gotta ask: The webbed grip, calling it venom... is that a Spider-Man reference?

Not necessarily. Pay no attention to the red and blue shoulder plate with the spider on it. Or my name. Not a Spider-Man reference at all. Seriously.

Maybe just a tiny bit.
