Title: Novoc Mereel's Blaster Arsenal
Post by: Novoc Mereel on Jan 07, 2019, 02:27 AM
Greetings everyone! Just a quick post to show some progress on my blasters. You can check out the newly-updated build thread in my signature to check out the rest of my kit!

This is my right-hand blaster. It's modded from a gun I used for Halloween several years ago, with most of its body filled with Bondo, and an extended ammo clip added. It felt pretty swars-y already, but I feel it's lacking a couple small details to really push it over the edge. I filled the small holes in the grip, and built up some parts up with some Aves Apoxie Sculpt, then shaped and sanded them down. I'm really happy with them so far, but need to Bondo the center seams still. It's close! See the end for the most recent picture of this blaster next to the other one.

The other blaster! This is a relic of an airsoft shotgun from I-don't-know-how-many-years-ago. The screw-holes are filled and sanded, but I'm wanting to still fill the holes at the top of the grip. Again, close to completion, but needs another detail or two to really push it into "holy cow that's cool" territory. I'm currently thinking of adding a blaster cartridge right ahead of the trigger guard, but am open to suggestions. I kind of really like the clean look of this one, so I'd even say it's closer than the first blaster.

Most recent image of the two together, both sides. Again, still needing to fill those holes in the former airsoft gun, but so far happy with my progress here.

Additionally, I'll be reaching out to WoodChuck for a DC-15A blaster rifle soon, he's given me a date that I need to check in with him. Honestly it's just my favorite gun from all of Star Wars. Here's a placeholder pic, just to show y'all what I've got in mind.

Love the right hand blaster- I have the exact same one and used it as part of a Vault Dweller costume a few years ago. Nice to see it being used in a Star Wars context as well!

That's my plan as well. I'd love to see a pic of yours for some inspiration!!

I really wish I remembered where I picked it up. I also wish I had a mirrored version with left-handed grips.

Updates!

Did some more filling in of the shotgun grip and some rough sanding.

I also rebuilt the trigger guard of the other blaster with 6mm Sintra and Apoxie Sculpt (seriously this stuff is the bees' knees).

Blaster pistols are looking pretty great. That shotgun you hacked down looks like it will make a fine Briar looking pistol

Thanks, I hadn't considered doing that! I feel as if it needs a greeblie or two to really bring it up to where I want it, but for the life of me I can't figure out what that part would look like. I'm also kind of considering just getting everything smooth and filling in the grips to cut down on the Earthiness and going for a sleek-looking heavy blaster pistol with a nice gloss coat on it.

Updates!! I finally started throwing together an E-11 kit I've had in my possession for about a year. I've got everything assembled except for the scope rail and Hengstler counter that attaches to it. A local 501st member said he has an extra he's going to get to me soon, so hopefully this will be up and running.

Progress on the pistols has been a little slow. Mostly just various stages of bondo and sanding the bondo back down haha. Nothing really crazy to report on that front, but wanted to share this update all the same!

Trying! I'm at the point where I badly need to paint several things including these blasters, but here in Kansas it hasn't gotten above 28 degrees Farenheit in about two months, and I don't want to die of paint fumes from doing it inside! The lighter pistol is ready for primer and paint, but the heavy pistol (shotgun base one) is needing a bit more filler work before I'm happy.

Hey, check it out, I've got updates!!

Got this  bad boy all filled and sanded to where I want. Here it is before paint:

The grips on this one have been a real pain to get right, but I'm finally pretty happy with where they're at. I still feel like this one needs a little extra *something* to really sell the look.

Additionally, I've got my down payment in to hold my spot on WoodChuck's DC-15A run, so that'll be coming in the near future, as well.

Thanks so much, I'm really happy with how it ended up. As far as the other one... honestly it's not great. I'm really unhappy with it. I feel like every time I do a layer of sanding and filler, and primer it just looks worse, so I've kinda stopped working on it. It's kind of just sitting in my room where I occasionally stare at it and wonder if I should try and re-vamp it, or just scrap it entirely. I put a silver coat on it, but I'd have to scrap at least a portion of that in order to get it where I want it.

In other news, got my email from WoodChuck, and my DC-15A is shipping in the morning, so I'll have it by the end of the week or early next week from what it sounds like!

Hi again! Got my DC-15A in the mail yesterday, and I'm absolutely blown away by WoodChuck's work. Going to try and get it primed and maybe the first coat of paint on this weekend if possible. For now, enjoy a pic dump!

The blaster comes in three pieces that bolt together:

And fully assembled:

Pics of me holding rifle for scale. I'm 6'3" for what that's worth. Please forgive the dumb look on my face in both pics, I was talking to my roommate when he took them.   The darn uploader on the forums won't seem to accept pics taken portrait style. Sorry about that. :(

You can build something like that for Legacy.  I know of quite a few Mandos using the DE-10 and D-200 pistols from SWTOR...

Dang..... I wish my skills were on Woodchuck's level. That thing is a real beaut. As for your other blaster pistol, what does it look like with paint on it? Post up a photo and maybe we can give you some input on how to fix it. Also, I think that one would look sweet with a scope on it.

To be honest I don't remember. It began its life as an old airsoft pump shotgun, and I stripped that way down and added some greeblies after filling the screw holes.

As requested, here's way too many pics of the other blaster with a layer of silver on it. Seems like no matter how many times I fill seams and gaps and sand them back down it doesn't seem to make much difference. I probably did 4-5 passes before the silver. The Bondo paste on the handle is constantly cracking no matter how thin the layers I make and how I seem to sand them. Maybe I'm jut doing something wrong, I'm not super experienced with Bondo.

Regarding the bondo, your problem might be the mixture ratio.  Too much of one part, and you get bondo that's too hard to work with.  Too much of the other part, and you get bondo that's flaky and brittle.

I use the stuff that comes in the tube, so it's definitely not the mixing ratio.

Well, could be the part ratio in the tube was off.  If it's the off-brand stuff, that might be the case.

It's the name-brand stuff. I've used multiple tubes of it over the years and it's always been pretty consistent.

Well, you might have gotten a bad batch then, who knows.

Regarding the crack though.  Assuming it remains consistent and doesn't get worse, you might just have to turn it into a part of the gun's history: like you whacked someone in the jaw with the butt of your gun and cracked the handle.

Updates! I'm not dead! Work's been pretty crazy the last few months, but a new schedule, and a promotion are good things happening in my professional life, so I've just been trying to get set up in my new role at work. Still, I've gotten a few things done. The DC-15A is painted and weathered! Still want to do a few more touch-ups, but mostly I'm calling it done. Also got my second blaster figured out.

First, the DC-15A:

And a few detail shots after weathering using 0000 steel wool and a brown wash for dirt/grime:

Now on to the blaster. I found parts of an old airsoft gun that I thought would look like a neat greeblie to slap on the side. I'd show you pics with paint, but the thing is currently out back drying between coats. I also added a thing piece of sintra and wrapped it around the rear of the grip to hide those little holes I tried to fill in (not pictured). For now, enjoy the pics of it pre-paint-app:

Paint on the blaster is dry. A little bit of yellow got through my masking, but I can fix that by hand. Gotta wait for another warm-ish day to finish up the rest.

Thanks! On my day off this week the plan is to add some red stripes over the yellow to match the other pistol that had the reverse (yellow stripes over red). I've got a large painting schedule set for my weekend haha. Going to hope the weather can hold, or at least I'll have to get a bucket of hot water for the paint, and find a way to hang it.

Voila! Got the kill stripes painted on the last blaster today. They're mostly dry, and I also went in by hand and fixed a couple spots of overspray. Tomorrow I plan to do a final inspection to make sure I don't feel anything else is needed, and then... weathering!

That is looking SWEET! I love how that shade of yellow ends up looking after a bit of weathering and the shape looks awesome

Much appreciated! One of my favorite things about this one is all the nooks & crannies for weathering to really dig into. Going to look SO nice!

And side-by-side with the other blaster. I feel likeI did a fine job of keeping the weathering consistent between them both, and I'm pretty satisfied with them. I likely won't be finishing the E-11 until the rest of my kit is done, in the interest of not trying to do too many things at once.
