Title: Armor Concept: Wild West Masculine Owl
Post by: willhilla on Nov 28, 2019, 08:44 AM
Hello! I am looking for some input on my armor concept. I have always been a fan of owls and especially desert/barn owls with earth tone desert colors. So I want to make a light armor, wild west, rat rod type, owl bucket, with a silver metallic that has surface rust patina on all armor peices so it looks like a old hot rod left in the desert slowly rusting away for decades. Here are a few images I'm using for inspiration. Should I use Modern Era since I want to use the Nite Owl bucket? Or Neo Crusader? I am awaiting CRL ruling on new chest options from 'The Mandalorian', as I am completely infatuated with the chest armor seen in the covert forge room scuffle scene. On screen example is seen in the reference photos. Thank you for any input.

Nite Owls are a Modern bucket, so you would have to be using Modern parts.

I'm also waiting for the new CRL's, but that "The Mandalorian" design will probably have to have some modifications,  like a proper collar.

I did find this online. Do you think it would be a good alternative to the Bo Katan style Owl helmet?

That's Demon Dog Studios Nitehawk.  Yes, that will be a fine alternative.   Thinking about getting one, myself.

You definitely have a lot of great ideas for inspiration!! I like what i see here. I think either a Nite Owl or the Nighthawk helmet from Demondog Studios would work great for the kit!!

I say light modern armor. Boba style, jango style. OR even Legacy style with the overlapping plates.

If you want that patina look with the rust i would recommend some weathering pigment used on model kits. I used MIG Rust pigment dust from https://www.etsy.com/listing/569060061/medium-rust-weathering-pigment?ref=shop_home_active_1 and its helped me get that rust look on my mermando armor.

as far as a poncho or duster, the app team is very picky about it. It cant cover the chest plates at all.

You have a great concept going here, and I can't wait to see what you do with it.

My advice when it comes to the rust is be very careful not to overdo it. The key is to make the armor look just rusty enough without compromising the quality and durability of it, if that makes sense  :D

Hello everyone and I hope you had a fantastic holiday. I have been going through Etsy and have noticed there is an MMCC approved vendor that sells 18 gauge sheet steel armor for relatively low prices. I think doing a little acid work on that armor would offer the most realistic patina. Does anyone have experience with metal plates for armor? The vendor is AGConstruxDesign.

I have metal plates, but not sure about using an acid etch on them.  My current set is 22ga., the thinnest that we reccomend.

This is my color scheme so far. Not hardset in stone but I am going for a more Western cowboyish color tone that centers around earth tones.

I think you should consider going browner on your color scheme. At the moment, it's a little too green, kinda camo-like. I would go for a dark brown on the vest - it's hard to weather black. Maybe take some more cues from the rust and barn owl feathers you posted for the armor?

If a proper collar isn't shown in the TV show, and the TV show is canon, how can it be made a requirement? I don't understand that, personally. Canon sources should dictate the CRLs, not the other way around, right?

That's something for the CRL team to answer.  Hopefully, there will be more information come next January.

My statement was based off of how the use of Sabine-style plates is treated for custom kits.  There has to be a collar and ab plate added.

Love the concept - my first kit has a very similar theme - image below for inspiration :)

Standard Jango plates (Minus the thighs and shins) and Night Owl helmet

Your armor looks so amazing! Thank you for sharing. I see I have my work cut out for me lol. Hopefully I get off to a good start at this weekenda Taakure clan armor party. Wish me luck!

Welcome!

You have some great ideas and inspiration. Keep on brainstorming, and trying things out.

In the short term, I highly recommend starting on the vest and flight suit/scrubs. Everything has to attach to that.

In the meantime, research, research, research.

Put together a folder on your computer and start copying over images that inspire you.

Decide if you are going to do metal or Sintra.

Keep researching.

Ask before you buy, especially on Etsy, Ebay, etc. If you get it from a vendor here on the MMCC forums, should be good to go.

What type of blasters are you considering?
