Title: Loth-cat WIP- Approved
Post by: Nadala Haast on Dec 29, 2019, 10:12 AM
Hi all, this is my first build and I'm excited to get to work!
My armor concept is based off of a loth-cat. I'm going for light armor with fur accents.

The two cat heads on the side is what I might draw on a shoulder bell.

I went to a local armor party and made the armor pattern and cut it out of sintra. I still have to sand and smooth out the edges before I do anything else with it.

I am now currently working on my flak vest, I can't decide if I want a zipped up back or side snaps. But I need to finish that before I shape the armor.
I think it is doable, but hopefully I can get this done before Celebration 2020!

This is so cool!! I'm doing a cat inspired build as well, I was having trouble coming up with colors/concepts so I decided to base my armor colors off of my cat ( who is grey, white and tan). I'm interested in seeing how this turns out, looks good so far!

Thank you everyone for your kind encouragement!

I am shifting to soft parts first.
I'm currently working on my flak vest. I've made one with buckle sides, but I don't think the collar is big enough to attach the armor. So I'm almost done with a second one with a zip-back. I'm making it way harder on myself by lining it but I like the finished look.

I will update with pictures of both when I can.

Update!
I finally shaped my armor today. I was going to wait for an armor party but... thats not happening so I did it myself!
I still have to fine tune, bondo the darts, and probably cut down the sides of the collar piece.

A few weeks ago I made my first trophy and guiding star for this build. A tooka doll! I named him Boonta. I will use the same teal duck cloth for my girth belt and other fabric accessories for my kit.

I'm also done with almost all my soft parts. I just need to dye the cape and loincloth.

Also my helmet I commissioned is printed and is almost ready to be shipped to me. I can't wait to receive it and start working on it.

Thank you everyone for the support! Since I'm working from home now, I'm making good progress on my armor during breaks.

I worked on filling in and sanding the breast darts today. It was much easier than I though it would be!
I started to look at placement and fine tuning, but I had such a hard time seeing the black plates against my black flak vest! I gave a light coat of primer so I can see now!

I've also been working on my vibro axe/glaive as well. I still have a lot more to work on, but I like how it's turning out so far.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get my sister's help with the spacing of the plates.

I got a lot done this weekend!

First I started painting my armor. After a few primer coats, I did a layer of silver, followed by a clear coat to protect the silver paint from future abuse. Then I masked the edges and a few mistakes I made when shaping with toothpaste. I've never done this type of weathering before, but I tested it on a scrap piece and I like how it looks! I did buy real masking fluid but it hasn't arrived yet.
Then I started putting down paint! Going from light to dark colors

I waited 24 hours for my first base color to dry completely before moving to masking.  Just to be safe.

I also ombre dyed my cape and loincloth made of white denim. I like how they turned out!
I still have to finish my girth belt but I stuck it on just to see the colors together. I have a black turtleneck and leggings so the colors should hopefully pop.

I still have to weather all my soft parts but I'm always loathed to rough up something thats new/handmade at first.

I love your sigil. I might have to hit you up on the decal. I've been debating if I want a cricut for a while to make stickers, decals, and such. But I'm right on the cusp of it not being worth it.

Paint Update!
I think I'm done with the plates!
I kept the design fairly simple and abstract. I didn't want to stray into looking like a Cats costume  ;)

Freshly painted: (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49722399676_3afb418152.jpg)

It was a struggle getting the toothpaste mask off. But my bottle of masking fluid came today so I will experiment with that on some scraps and probably switch to that for the rest of the build.

Paste removed: (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49722398726_40e71b27dc.jpg)

Then I went over the whole thing with several washes of brown paint that I wiped off, as well as some Rub and Buff around the weathered edges. It's hard to tell in the photo but it made the cream parts look much more worn and weathered.

Weathered: (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49721859013_b8b3e90253.jpg)

For my first time painting armor, I'm pretty happy how these turned out! I'm leaving the shoulder bells blank for future sigils and art.

I would like to say thank you everyone for your kind words and support. It's been keeping me motivated and excited to work on this kit in a time where there are no armor parties. Lots of Loth Cat love to you all!

As I wait for more industrial velcro to come, I focused on accessories. I didn't document the process so I don't think they need their own WIP post.

First, my vibro axe. I might add a few details and will change the cloth wrap, but it is basically done!
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49736808952_6d1533f140.jpg) (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49736809142_bee34c2462.jpg)

Next I found an old super 8 camera that was in The Mandalorian as binoculars. With a few additions and different paint job think they can work. It also came with a beautiful bag, that I might use for another costume. I would cover the design with a greeblie or something.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49735938748_f5d03f7b0a.jpg) (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49736808422_66cc94d927.jpg)

Lastly, I made my first trophy. It's made up of left over pieces from my Enfys Nest build. I think it would be neat to make a trophy that represents each of my Star Wars costumes.

About 10 days ago (what is time these days?!) I tried on what I had so far and it gave me a lot of confidence. I've already fixed and added a lot since then so hopefully I can get better photos soon. But enjoy this one of me with my own loth-cat for now!

I'm checking things off my list, but I still need my helmet (a long debacle), black leather belt pouches (being made), and permanent gauntlets (from April Storm).
In the meantime I made some half bracers just for fun. I probably won't app with them, but I'm not sure how long my gauntlets will take to get here so I can play with these until they do.

As I've been waiting for the bigs things to arrive I've worked on a lot of little details.

I've also been working on a canteen holder and two knives. Here is the smaller of the two knives. The handle is a saguaro rib that I found in a neighbor's trash.

Amazing. Be sure to add weathering to your sigil on the shoulder bell to match the rest of your armour.  You'll also want to add weathering to all that black (flak vest, belt, flightsuit, and when you make you leather pouches).  I'd recommend some light mists from a spray can of tans, browns, and maybe whites on the material.  This will make your weathering pop on the black and match the rest of your kit.

I love this kit, so cool and inspiring! One of the concepts I'm working on is a Loth Wolf inspired kit. I'm pretty sure I'm going to start with something a bit more subdued for my first build but why stop with one, right?

Update! Knives and Bucket Time

First I finished my saguaro daggers last week, the leather and tools for the sheaths are in the mail now. I'm thinking about making a drop-down sheath for the larger one so I can have it strapped to my thigh. Or it will go on my belt. For the little one I think I might attach it to my half-chaps using a detachable sheath.

My first helmet was WAY too big and was able to work it out with the original seller. But I was able to find a semi-local maker and he printed me a new one. It's as small as we could make it while still being able to get my head inside. The helmet is much more triangular than it looks!
He ran out of his regular filament and with all the shipping delays he had to use what he had around the house. So I get the amazing technicolor helmet!
I almost feel bad painting over it.

While I was waiting for it to be printed, I sketched out my final concept for the helmet. It might change as I'm actually painting it, but this will serve as a good reference. I did 3 or 4 versions of the design, each time making it more and more simple while maintaining the feline element.

The big thing with this costume is that I didn't want to look like I am in CATS  :P. So I'm more alluding to loth-cats than directly using their patterns.

It's starting to get hot here in Arizona so I want to get the outside sanding work done quickly before May rolls around.

The filament turned out really cool on that helmet! My friend has a 3D printed ursa helmet (for her ursa wren lol) and I know hers was pretty fragile so I’d recommend reinforcing the seams on the inside!

Thanks! The guy who printed it did a great job and printed it in one piece and added extra reinforcements so it's super sturdy to start out, but I still plan to shore up the whole thing.

Is your friend, Mirdala Senaar? I saw her kit at the Hollywood Christmas parade (I was a Jedi there) and her helmet is actually what gave me the idea to use this style!

I clicked on the link with some trepidation, as I've seen quite a few 'this animal or that animal' themed kit that were, to put it delicately, uninspiring. I'm glad I checked this out though, because from concept to creation it's awesome. I will admit that, after the first post, I was lazy and skimmed to check out the pictures, but there's very little I have in the way of critique. Really, the only thing I can think of is that the teal seems to clash a fair bit with the rest of it, given that it's just the sash, tooka and ankle strap thingy. Do you still plan on going with the concept and having the bicep bands and visor teal as well? I think those other additions will serve to tie it in better.

I don't see why not? I got a lot of inspiration from other animal themed kits that are approved.

Thanks for the feedback! I have the teal visor in hand and will add more of that color once I have a more completed kit and can see where it will balance well.

Thank you for the advise. I scuffed up the vinyl today. I will take pictures when I have more to share. I've started to weather my vest and I've found I like dry-brushing the paint best.

First new profile image, whoop whoop!  :porg2: (both this and my previous one were drawn by me)

Mainly I've been working on my helmet. I'm doing the good old filler-primer and bondo method and it seems to be going pretty well. I think I just need one more coat of filler primer and sanding after this bondo round.

My belt is coming together as well. I'm still waiting for the pouches, but I've been in communications with the maker and should be done by next week. I finished my knife sheaths too, it was my first time working with leather and artificial sinew, the sheaths are very simple but they work. I also made myself a canteen holder. I will see if I app with it, but I've learned I need to carry water with me at events or else I get massive dehydration "hangovers" the next day. I just got a Cricut, so I might add some aurebesh or other details to the bottle.

I'm waiting to weather my soft parts so I can do it all at once, I will ask for weathering critique when it is done, but not yet please!

I feel like for this whole kit, I know what to do, but have no clue how well I can do it. So it's been a fun, interesting challenge so far! Hopefully I can get the helmet finished by May the 4th. But we will see  :<3:

I still need to work on installing all the inside goodies like padding, fans, etc. But I finally got the outside how I wanted it. It's not perfect but I'm happy with it for now.

I used some extra visor material on my rangefinder for some fun low-tec flair.

I might incorporate other little scraps into the gauntlets and axe as well.

Thank you everyone for your kind words about my bucket! I was weirdly anxious about sharing it.

I got my black pouches in the mail today and threw everything on! It was my first time wearing it with my helmet so it was a lot of fun! It was also a great way to evaluate what still needs work. Following Slade Kel's advice I'm going to add more teal fabric to my calves, and maybe biceps to break up the black. Also, I still need to weather all the black parts down. Now that I have all my soft parts I can begin on that!

Today was mostly for fun and to see what it was like kitting up. But I feel like I'm getting so close  :porg2:

I won't take pre-app photos until I have my new gauntlets from April Storm. But they are somewhere between me and Australia, so who knows when they will show up.

For fun I made a little loth-cat decal for my belt buckle. I can remove it if it won't pass but I think it's a fun detail
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49876313311_9ff078d1eb.jpg) (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49876621332_e8d1c55c37.jpg)

I started weathering my black soft parts today by dry-brushing brown acrylic paint over the edges that would appear more worn, and took some sandpaper to add scratches.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49876313066_81ab42bc72.jpg) (https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49876621447_eaceaae6e0.jpg)

Of course on the wider photos you can barely see the weathering, but in my photos of my armor look less weathered than they actually are. So as long as the weathering is consistent in the photos as well as matching in real life I think it should be fine.

I had one question for ladies with tight-fitting leggings and turtleneck flightsuits. How do you weather those materials? I think I will just stick with the paint method since any physical weathering would start to damage the fabric. But I was wondering if you had any tips and techniques?

That buckle is so cute!

As for weathering your black spot goods, you can try misting some brown and tan spray painter over the top and leggings to give it that weathered appearance without physically damaging the material. I’d recommend laying the top and bottom flat on the ground and let the spray paint fall onto the fabric. I hope that makes sense!

Wow, this is amazing. Love the little touches like the belt buckle. Also the teal visor is slick as, love it.

Good tip for weathering without damage is to dilute some bleach - REALLY dilute, like a couple of teaspoons in 500ml/1pint of water - put it in a spray bottle and very lightly mist it over wear points (knees, elbows, hips, shoulders). Leave to dry in the sun, come back an hour or so later, apply another coat. Repeat until it is a) noticeable and b) weathered enough.

Looking great! On weathering black soft parts, I've also had a lot of luck with wearing some nitrile gloves and just hand-smearing on small amounts of grey and brown acrylic paint. Depending on the brand, some might come off in the wash but it usually holds up pretty well over time.
Title: Re: Loth-cat WIP
Post by: Nadala Haast on May 23, 2020, 04:12 PM
Thanks everyone for the advice on weathering the soft parts. I did the acrylic method with a dusting of spray paint. The acrylic washed out, but the spray paint stayed pretty well so I will go over again with the spray.

After looking at some full body photos, I decided I needed something on my shins to break up the black. But I can't decide which I like better, the fur or the shin armor. I plan on kitting up tomorrow to get full body photos of each.
I just realized the shin photo is pre-weathering

Also I finished my gauntlets from April Storm! I included some stripes to match my helmet. I have progress photos but they are pretty standard and won't share them here.

The longer Mando'a is a rough Tolkien quote "little by little one goes far" and the other says "follow the white loth cat"

Lastly I got some more pouches that are larger. One to allow for my speaker and the big one for my phone and wallet!

I actually agree with Jethro there, both is good :D. I like the shin armor much better than just the fur wraps, but if you added little bands of fur at the top and bottom of the shin plates I think it would be a nice touch.

I submitted my photos to my clan for pre-app today, but wanted to share them here too!
I actually took some yesterday but found a lot I wanted to fix. (could see the foam in the gauntlets, needed a balaclava, needed more weathering, and girth belt weirdness). Luckily I was able to make all the changes early this morning and re-took the photos by lunch time.

But here's what I got so far! I went with the fur wraps for now. I don't really want to mess up my chaps with any armor attaching method yet. But I have the shin plates just incase I ever want to switch.

I'm also starting to see peoples frustration with the blacks not showing the weathering in photos!

I need to figure out what to do with my hair under the balaclava. I tried a bun for these photos but it looks weird. I tried having the bun higher in the helmet, but the Ursa helmet model is very tight back there and I almost couldn't get the helmet off!!! Very claustrophobic for a little bit there. I think I might just braid it and shove it down into the collar.

Let me know what ya'll think!

For my custom mando, I typically braid my hair and let it hang out of the back of the helmet. My hair tangled really easily so that helps prevent that lol

This kit looks really amazing, fantastic work :)

They're probably gonna tell you that the side buckles on the vest need to be metal-looking (a rub n buff or silver paint drybrushing would do the trick) and MAYBE to add some dirt to the plates (cause the softs are a little dirtied up and everything has to be the same level).  Other than that you look good to go on CRLs.

I really really like the fade you did on the cape and loincloth!  It's beautiful!

Ooh good call on the rub and buff! I didn't even think about the buckles. I might add some 'dirt' to the tan sections on the edges. Thank you!

For my custom mando, I typically braid my hair and let it hang out of the back of the helmet.

Thank you! I will try that. I've never worn a balaclava before so I will have to try somethings out to see what is most comfortable.

Thank you! I had a lot of visor left over and added a bit to my gauntlet too. I like how it ties the color in more. I wish I could have a visible braid. The Ursa helmet is weird, and it really high in the back so I need a balaclava. I can't think of any way to have my hair show with out revealing the back of my neck. But I do like how cool the balaclava keeps my head, so I've let the issue go for now.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the app team... but patience is the name of the game!

While I've been waiting, I did make myself a little friend for my kit. I've named him Mallow since he looks like a toasted marshmallow! I have supplies coming to make a full sized mama loth-cat too.

Thank you! You know what is too funny? My very first concept sketch looked so much like CATs the musical I nearly scrapped the whole idea. But I went back and stylized it more and got where we are today. But it is a very fine line you have to walk when designing cat themed kits for sure!
