Title: Roki's Body Armor (new stuff, pg 8 !)
Post by: Rokeim Gekla on Apr 17, 2010, 02:31 PM
Since it seems my original thread pulled  Houdini,  i shall start anew !   Look for revampedness in the coming days (or even later today, if i get ambitious)

But for now.. the reason i was lookin for my thread.

I've got a small conundrum.   I've got cabling going from both gaunts,  i know what i'm going to plug said cabling into,  but i'm not sure how to mount/disguise it so its workable (and looks good too)

I'd like to get some sort of small canister, or flat pack to put these in,  but i'm not sure what exactly i could use.

Yes,  those are old Monster cables (quit cringing, they got toasted in a power surge)

Going to be using 2 sets of 3 cables,  3 going to left gaunt, 3 to right.

I was considering mounting them in my jetpack, but thats a last resort.  Having gaunt firearms powered by a JP that may, or may not be worn (circumstances pending, etc etc) probably wont be a good idea.

And here it all is.    The status hasn't changed much,  joblessness, college, new job, etc etc got in the way.. but now.  Its very close.  As, its at the seamstress getting velcro sewn on so it can all be attached :)   Should have it back by the end of the month.

Just have a few things to finish gluing, a smidge of detail painting, velcro attaching and it'll be troopable :)

these bottom ones arent 100% accurate anymore, i've added a few little things (yesterday in fact)  no pics of new mods yet Sad

These were taken last fall.  there's been a little more work done to them the last few days, no new pics yet,  but they're not too much different.   Took care of some cabling mostly, still not sure how i'm going to terminate the cables, meh lol.

Admins -  i can easily split this off into a gaunt thread if need be :)

Fruits of my day...

Cabling issue, mostly resolved.  Got them terminated in a nice little canister-thingy.
JP and Harness now attach to eachother
Gun now has shoulder strap.

The canister-thingy isnt finished.  Heck, its barely together.. period.   Not painted nor glued,  but its a mockup, and here it is :)

Probably wont get much done on it today, got class..and a composition paper due tomorrow morning (yeck)   Might drill the screw holes that'll secure the canister to my butt-plate.  Possibly prime it all for painting (still haven't quite figured out a color scheme)

It looks like you really put in a lot of work on this and didn't cut any corners. The colour scheme is nice, and the weathering looks very realistic and natural. Details make the costume, and you have done an excellent job.  Looking forward to seeing your app. :)

3 ?  Not quite.  It'll be 3 come late winter :-p.

Still waiting on the seamstress.  Today was the absolute earliest she said she'd be-able to get it done, and she hasn't called,  so I'm hoping she'll get to it next week.   I'd LOVE to suit up for Free Comic Day...

And for those who haven't learned the #1 rule of this kind of costuming.   Good product is dependent on 3 things.   Fast,  Cheep. High Quality.   pick 2 :)    This sure as heck hasn't been a fast build ;)

Since I had no afternoon class today.. i figured i may as well pound somethin out :)  This be the results so far, any further progress today will just be a finishing of what's already been done so far and wont have pics taken 'till much later :-p

First up, is the nearly finalized solution to my wiring problem.  What you're seeing is a piece of 3.5"x 7" PVC, painted and capped off. There are a pair triple RCA input jacks (one on each end) to accept the wiring (see previous pictures). The wire pack is attached to my kidney plate via 2 screws (for removability and such), and the kidney plate will be attached to my girth belt by 2 hooks that i've got glued to the back of the plate.   There are also 3 cables/hoses going from the wire pack (not sure if i should paint those or not.. need input here people !!!).  Which takes us to the next pic...

The cables from the wire pack will be going into these 3 points in the JP, the 2 outside points will be accepting the wires inside the cables individually, while the center point will take the whole thing.   All 3 will be permanently attached on the JP side, and be removable from the wire pack.

The purpose of the removable hosing is for if i wish to troop without the JP,  the overall look of the armor wont be totally screwed up by a trio of flopping cables.

edit :  i was able to get the cables blackened up, glued to their mount points, and the mount points are now attached to the JP (glue is drying as i type this).  Also got the final pieces of the left gauntlet mostly installed (darts are where they should be, flame thrower mounts installed and their glue is drying).   Also added a couple little greeblies to the JP ;)

Got the flightsuit back today !  Got a couple plates mounted,  i can already see the need for some snaps or some such to hold down corners, but for now, i'll probably just introduce a little Bendy-ness to them and at least make it appear to fit right :-p.   Look for updates over the next few days :)

And since i feel like teasing people.. I WILL !

thats so fresh off the cell phone, my hand is burninated.

The collar pieces seem to fit alright,  nothing a little more bending wont fix (i can shrug my shoulders and not have something hit my chin, yay !)  the left/right chest plates sit fine, just need to re-velcro one spot.  Left bell sits perfectly,  right bell needs re-velcroing.   and everything below the waistline needs alot of bit of bending or at least strapping (i forget what the regs say about visible fastening straps...)

Thanks guys :)     Now i just need to figure out how to haul this on an airliner, and come up with a 'solo' version of this setup.  As it is, it definately takes a helper to get it all on and situated right.   So close to being 'done', but so far from 'finished'...  *sigh*

Roki,

One thing I see that needs to be fixed is your gut plate.  It's way to low, you need to raise it about an inch.  The best way to measure it is by putting both thumbs together and holding them vertically between the top of the gut plate, and bottom inside of the chest plates.  As long as the sides of your thumbs can touch the armor then your ok.  The rest of your armor is spaced great, which is why your gut plate is going to be an issue.

Other than that, this is an EXCELLENT kit.  And honestly that's an easy fix of moving some velcro.
Title: Re: Roki's Body Armor redux (FINISHED, pix on p3 !!)
Post by: Rokeim Gekla on May 18, 2010, 09:43 AM
Agreed, an easy fix,  Except for the minor issue of that if i move the plate up that much, the bottom strip of velcro will be visible (steeenking seamstress.. ah well) .   I could re-arrange all the plates and create a bit of wiggle room,  but i'm worried that it'll screw up the already decent spacing elsewhere :(     Its just something i'll have to tweak at here and there.
Title: Re: Re: Roki's Body Armor redux (FINISHED, pix on p3 !!)
Post by: Dar'manda on May 18, 2010, 09:49 AM
Maybe use a strip of fabric about 5-6 inches wide to make a fabric girthbelt that you can wear to cover the velcro?

Title: Re: Roki's Body Armor redux (FINISHED, pix on p3 !!)
Post by: Rokeim Gekla on May 18, 2010, 09:58 AM
Its usualy over top, but if stretch or reach for anything, the vest moves over top of it.   Its one of the last pieces of this getup i can put on w/o help,   its there, trust me lol
Title: Re: Re: Roki's Body Armor redux (FINISHED, pix on p3 !!)
Post by: Dar'manda on May 18, 2010, 09:59 AM
Is it wide enough to reach the velcro that would show when you move the ab plate up?  Maybe sew some velcro onto the inside of the girthbelt and stick it there? LOL
Title: Re: Roki's Body Armor redux (FINISHED, pix on p3 !!)
Post by: Rokeim Gekla on May 18, 2010, 10:04 AM
Its  about 1" wider than the girth,  which is why its rather hard to see,  the girth and gunbelt do a pretty good job of covering it up,  and any visible parts of it in back are covered up by the buttplate/wire-cannister     i'll figure something out,  never fear ! i'm good at rigging something little like that up.

I'll probably just re-velcro the plate itself.  i think theres enough wiggle room there  for about a half inch of movement.  figure something out for the other half inch of space..

edit - scratch all that !   Epiphany while taking out the garbage... issue fixed :)

Just a little tease on what i'll be getting within the next couple months (i should have it by June :) )

Also actively working on de-nerf-ifying my longshot, modding it rather extensively, pics will come for that eventually, right now its in pieces and i've ran into the money wall (need bondo and fiberglass >_<).  Backplate is in the works, and i've been tossing around ideas on kidney/flank armor.  Not too sure what to do there yet, but i've got one solid idea thats kinda what i want, and other not-so-solid ideas that are more in line... meh... :(

Alrighty... VERSION 2 OFFICIAL !

Things i know i need to do
1) Figure a better way to keep the new biceps from wandering so much (they're already velcro'ed 6 ways from sunday, and they have a nylon strap.. grrrrr)   I'm blaming the flight suit.. perhaps some tighter tailoring or some such..
2) More back armor,  that lovely space between the end of the backplate and my belt line is such a great place for more armor ;)
3) Calf Armor

First of all, it looks good mate. I like the colour scheme you've got going on, and the weathering looks good.

I think if you raised your belt up, and added some pouches or something similar to the back you wouldn't need more back armour, which would also help with the congestion you currently have around your waist with all the pouches and holster. Also I think this would help counter act the unbalanced look of it at the moment. By unbalanced what I mean is; with the elongated ab piece and everything going on around your waist/thighs, I think it makes you look a little like you have a very long torso and short squat legs.

Personally I don't much like the collar segmented into so many parts but that is more of a personal preferance thing I think. One thing you could do to perhaps improve it (in my eyes anyway) would be to adjust the position of the parts so that they lined up along the bottom better rather than being a little uneven a they are at the moment, but I realise this is probably easier said than done.

Lastly in regards to the biceps, you could try having a strap coming down from the shoulders of the vest to the top of them, and providing it wasn't too long it may help to stop them from twisting as much. And possibly shaving a little (~ 1") off the bottom of them might help too.

Just my thoughts on possible improvements :)

*EDIT* Also IMO you should either cover up or change the belt buckle as it detracts from the high level of execution present in the rest of the kit.

Post by: Slade Kel on Jan 05, 2012, 11:34 PM
Think I've touched on the collar in the past, so I'll leave it :P. I kind of like the way the belt is canted down on one side a bit; gives it a sort of gunslinger look, though I think you could use a girth belt/sash/etcetera. You might want to consider losing the pouch on the left side of the belt buckle, though, as it looks a little cluttered with the thigh pouch right there too. For the belt buckle itself, what I did with mine was just cut a piece of aluminum to shape and velcro'd it right to the bucket. Pull it off to buckle and unbuckle, then slap it back on. Instant new belt buckle.

For the biceps, moar velcro! If you're careful, you can get enough of your sleeve under a sewing machine to sew the velcro right onto the sleeve; s'what I did with mine and it made a world of difference keeping my biceps in place.

Heck guys.. i never even thought of the belt buckle  :o   Will definately get done this spring after i get a chance to do a little imagination-ing.    I think i'm going to forego more velcro on the biceps and just stick a snap under the sleeve and on the bicep armor itself.  definately wont be moving anywhere then ;)

I do have a girth belt, but i think i'm going to mod my vest a little before i wear it again.   Rest assured i'll have it all squared away for Celebration  ;D

Yeah I think a girth belt would totally solve the problem of the short looking back plate.  That plate looked longer on your tape cast, but a strip could be added below the plate that acts as a large kidney plate.

But yeah I think if you can get something like a Jango style girth belt, then you won't need to worry about that space at all.  Your tall enough to sport a good wide girth belt.

Always liked your kit Roki. But yeah, i think the Jango girth belt will work very well. Plus it'll cover the space on your lower back.  ;)

Just to add; I also think you need to cut an inch - 1.5 off the bottom of that belly plate.  Especially if your going to add a girth belt, as it's going to overlap and be uncomfortable as heck.

Last time i used my girth, i had problems keeping it up, stinking thing kept wanting to slide down, so before i go cutting things i need to figure out a good way to keep it in place.

And no Calo.. you cant have my bucket ;)    MS is possibly making new ones tho...

Cinch it tighter to the point just before too uncomfortable to wear.

Or put velcro around the bottom of your vest, and on the inside of the girth belt.  That'll keep it up, and that's what I have to do.

first impressions to me are the gut plate is a bit on the long side, and a girth belt or something need to be around the waist as the plates are looking on the big side.

NEW STUFF !

Well..semi new..got it all last fall, and its taken this long for the weather to cooperate.  You'll see it all above in the Oct 3rd post of mine.

My primary grey color is no longer available to me (its from a body shop, 3 hours south, and they've got the color codes.. maybe.. i doubt it,  and i've only got a smidge of the original can left)  So i've switched to something i hope is close,  Krylon Pewter Grey,  so i'm totally aware that the colors dont QUITE match up, but they're pretty steenking close.

This is a rush job ! I need to have these ready for Saturday, and i'm skipping over some of my usual weathering just to get these done,  if need be at a later date i'll do some touch ups to that aspect.  Each step i'm doing to each piece,  obviously, and wont post pics of all of it each time i do something, just as i do a stage.

Step 1.. primer !  Just used standard Krylon grey primer here.

Step 2 - Krylon Pewter Grey
(http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac15/jdoehler64/20140501_0921221.jpg)

Step 3 - Black Coat (yes.. i'm doing it weird).   This is mainly to A) dull down the color when i put the next coat of pewter on, and B ) to help out when i do some weathering,  scratching it up will reveal the black underneath, as well as the silver of the steel.  Makes for good contrast.

Step 4 - Weathering
I'm out of my usual black line dust, so i used strait up crushed charcoal,  doesnt work as well, but its a little more abrasive and that has its own charm ;).  Also added in some black paint misting and a few more direct shots.  Also added in a sprits (not a smidge, mind you) of Testors Metalizer - Gunmetal Grey (you'll see that on the right side), just for some flavor.

Overall.. its not bad for a couple hours of work.

Whats not showing, is the rest of the work to the shoulders i did.   Inbetween waiting paint to dry, i added some velcro to the shoulders and actually chopped up my old bicep armor to give the biceps on these a little more length.  They have not been weathered yet, as i hope to get some stenciling done on them tomorow (sigils...well.. i'm not telling :-p).

I'm also going to add some Jaig eyes to my helmet (GASP ! he's messing with his helmet ! NOOOOOO)  and possibly some other sigils on the dome indents.  We'll see there.

I MAY also get some chains hanging down off the shoulder bells,  not sure yet.  but i've got 5 to play around with.

And IF i get around to mounting them (not sure how i'm even going to do that yet)  They'll probably be in this configuration

Those are acceptable? I guess they look to be in-universe enough. I had the thought that suspenders and such had to be hidden. This may make some of my personal issues a little easier. I will still probably opt for under the vest strapping.

Doubt I can say this enough, but I do like your kit. Especially the colors. I'll have to look at the holster some more. Seems to be almost exactly what I want to do for my own holster.
