Title: Kyr v0.5 (Protector)
Post by: Peregrinus on Jul 08, 2010, 06:47 PM
From the bottom up, these sabatons:

...knees:

...and cod/butt armour:

[came out bad, need to reshoot]

...are all made of sintra. I have my first steel cod/butt combo in hand, but won't be using it yet for lack of tools for finishing:

Need to roll the edges like this:

I will be able to in coming months, but I want something wearable for my clan picture day in late August.

My upper body armour has been outsourced so I can concentrate on the stuff I can make more easily with the gear I have on hand, and will be arriving in early August, whereupon it will be painted, mounted, and photographed for submission. The WIP photos at that stage will be coming fast and heavy. Here's a teaser:

Fantastic ;D. I've a mixed metal-sintra set myself. As much as I like my aluminum plates, some are just easier to deal with in plastic form, mostly from an attachment/staying-in-place standpoint.

Also, when you get the metal cod-piece finished, make sure the edges are smooth and blunted, possibly even padded or plastidipped. My last metal cod wore through the crotch of my pants at one point :P. I believe Novall had the same problem a couple years back, if I recall correctly.

Post by: Peregrinus on Jul 25, 2010, 06:59 PM
Yeah, when the return edges are finished, that gives room to line them with some good padding, and the point of the crotch is going to be held down with a variation on the Boba-thong -- a short strip of elastic or webbing sewn into the crotch seam and snapping to the point of the cod. That'll help prevent wear on the actual flightsuit. But yes, I am absolutely making sure the edges are filed and sanded smooth and round. :)

Slade, thanks to you I had the most horrible mental image of some kid kicking somebody with an unrounded cod plate in the crotch.

If I were a male, I think I'd be curled up in the corner sobbing. As it is .  .. .ooowww.

Hey -- if you have the point of the codplate positioned such that kicking would drive it in anyplace tender... you're doing it wrong. :P

As I said in my helmet WIP thread, I've been increasingly absent from the internets over the last couple months, culminating in my computer going phut. I now have a new power supply and hard drive, and I'm hoping I'll have all the data (including pictures) salvaged off the dead drive soon. I'm going to be delving later this evening or tomorrow to update this and my other WIP threads with whatever pictures I'd taken and uploaded to Photobucket already.

A clarification that I see I hadn't put in originally -- I am not using a backplate on this costume, as it's a "placeholder" costume including components of my Fenn Shysa and Kyr v2 costumes, as well as getting some use out of my sintra test helmet and gauntlets. I'll have a couple additional accessories to use here, too, such as an oilskin "trenchvest" and a Clonetrooper-style hardshell backpack, so the back will be properly covered. I'll tackle the backplate when I set out to finish those other costumes and will be able to do my metal gaunts and helmets.

Might as well add a couple teasers here. I'll take and post more this evening -- I have about two-thirds of the pictures I've taken so far, but some seem to have vanished from my camera. I think going through the wash affected the memory card... >_>

Took this one of the right chest plate and belly plate while I was working on the left chestplate. The chest diamond was already attended to and somewhere else. You can see the bumpy bits where the toothpaste is masking the deepest layer of weathering damage, down to the bare metal. These all are just showing the primer layer:

A closer shot of the belly plate with the toothpaste removed:

And the right chest plate:

And, for good measure, here's the right shoulder plate:

Took a few more today to get back up to speed with where I am in the painting process.

Left shoulder plate, primed:

And here are the rest, either with the toothpaste applied for the next layer of weathering or -- in the case of the left chest plate, partly applied...

From here, I'm trying to figure out whether I want to get everything else primed first, which requires a goodly bit of finishing work before that can happen, or whether I should just go ahead and break out the airbrush for these pieces now. The collar needs a bit of hammering. The stainless steel's memory pulled it, the belly, and both chest plates a little straighter again, but while it'e negligible on the chest and belly plates, the collar flattened out way too much. The cod and butt plates still need their return edges. And the sintra gauntlets, knees, and boot armor are still being assembled and shaped. But at least my modded Hasbro helmet oughta be ready to be primed soon -- only a little bit of finishing work left before that can happen. :)

once you can get some more completed, and could give you better advice. I'm more of a finish type of guy rather than fabrication. I can fabricate, you I'm better and paint and weather. So that's where I feel comfortable giving advice. It looks like you're off to a great start though. I'm looking forward to seeing your kit completed.

Finally something substantial. The undercoat is down (i.e., the layer between the primer and the oxidized outer layer). Masking toothpaste is still on while it cures a bit, and the other pieces are still out by the airbrush drying.

Okay, back from the Celebration/Dragon*Con cross-country whirlwind road trip. Somewhat recovered. Starting to have enough energy and focus to work on stuff again.

A look at where things were as of yesterday...

I still have to do the last layer of masking and the other shade of green (good ol' Panzer Olive Green) over the torso armor here. I stilll have to finish cleanup of my knees and sabatons and get them painted up through all the layers. I still haven't resumed work on my gauntlets. But it's something. *chuckle*

A closer look at the right and left (respectively) shoulders, which are finished with painting and are in the process of final weathering and clear-coating:

Oh, I got the later-stage weathering sorted, don't worry. ;)

Here are the shoulders after three shades of powders and the badge decal (taken with my phone -- I'll get better shots tonight):

All that's left on the paint/finish aspect of these now is the final black-mist and clear-coating/sealing. And since all my painting is currently limited to weekend availability... *sigh* Looking at Sunday at the earliest for that. Then I start work on the insides... ;)

It was, but the sketch I showed you hasn't really begun yet (a couple pieces are going to be interchangable, like the sash and flight suit and flak vest). I consider that one to really be my v1.0, and this to be more my v0.5 -- a way to get something wearable and approvable that I'm happy with whilst continuing to work toward the more involved projects. About half the armor in this build is ultimately intended for my Fenn Shysa kit. The thighs, knees, sabatons, cod, collar, gauntlets, and helmet I'm making for this kit stay with this kit, though. Most of those are plastic of one sort or another, and the cod and collar need to be redone.

I don't have nearly as many pictures of the process as I was hoping for, cuz I was too busy working. *heh* Last Saturday saw the rest of the painting, weathering, and clear-coating of the armor pieces I've been showing recently -- torso and cod. I've got the electronics mostly installed and have to do a little more securing and soldering. I have the girth belt done, and the gunbelt will be following it shortly. That said...

Codplate:

The vest armor, all done on the outside:

And a shot from the chest display fired up:

The chest diamond will be following suit soon. I have to wire a rheostat into the circuit and mount everything in a box to keep it secure.

So... Now I'm onto siting and mounting the screw posts, padding the insides, protecting the electronics, and other fun stuff. *heh*

The winter here sucks for being warm and dry enough to do much, and the holidays have a wonderful way of interfering with getting together for armor parties. At the cost of many poor brain cells, I've been doing some prep work on my lower-body armor that I should really be doing with better ventilation.

Left knee (from redkraytdragon, in kit orm, heavily overengineered by me) and left sabaton  (scratchbuilt from sintra and armature wire) have been cleaned up, primed, and have the base layer of Liquid Stainless Steel sprayed on. (I took these pictures while that was still curing. Once it has I still need to buff it to get the right finish, then I can paint it...) Since the grey primer layer for my paint apps is also a rattlecan, I'll be masking and painting that layer. The geens and yellows will have to wait until I can airbrush at the next armor party.

Knee, cleaned up:

...Primed:

...And steeled:

Sabaton, cleaned up:

I forgot to take a picture of it after I primed it, but here it is steeled:

At this point, I need to finish cleanup on my right knee, get to work on my thighs and shins, and redo my right sabaton.

Title: Re: Kyr v0.5 (Protector)
Post by: Peregrinus on Jan 08, 2013, 10:33 PM
Yeah, it's a fun balance to strike. Too thick and the armor looks like huge slabs of metal, which would be horrid (why I don't use 6mm sintra). Too flat and it looks flimsy. They did good with the original film costume by sculpting it and vac-forming it to have a rolled edge. That gives it depth, but there are enough subtle cues to tell the eye that it's a thinner material (that -- in universe -- is probably lined with padding and contains other systems, like whatever the chest display is a readout of and so forth). I mean, even Will's awesome knee kit needed a little depth added. ;)

I'm not there yet, but a question about attaching the sabatons. I'm using my black jackboots with this costume. I'm going to have Jango-style shins strapped on with leather straps. For the sabatons, I am planning to use leather straps around the heel and under the arch, but black elastic for the last little bit that holds the sabaton to the leather rig, so it has some play to move as the boot flexes and extends. Will an inch of black elastic against black leather down around my ankles be a no-no? Or could I get away with it?

Yeesh. I didn't realize it had been so long. I have been doing stuff with this, even though most of my work on this in the past year has been soft goods, weapons, gauntlets, helmet, and backpack... Most relevant, the weather has gotten good enough that painting is happening once more. A tease -- leg armor primed prior to applying the metallic coat...

Left leg and foot (knee getting work done elsewhere):

Right leg (knee also being worked on elsewhere):

Not above showing my setbacks. The reason the right sabaton isn't primed yet -- need to reglue that bit of armature wire  :

Huh... Thought I'd updated this thread. Apparently not. Nor had I uploaded the pictures I thought I'd updated it with to Photobucket. I apparently dreamed that. :blank:

Anyhoo. The work I'd been doing on the knees, using the left for my model. To give some depth, I took a piece of 1mm sintra, cut it approximately to size, figured out the cutouts, and... well... cut.

Then I glued it in position and filled/blended the edge with my go-to epoxy putty.

With the additional parts in place. Chaff dispenser, tripwire launcher, vent/heat sink.

Sanded smooth and ready to go.

I was unsatisfied with the stainless steel paint I tried first time round, so I'm taking a different approach this time. First step is as smooth a bare plastic finish as possible to work with. So my undercoat for all these plastic pieces is RustOleum Professional Grade gloss black. It and the gloss white -- at least -- have ground up ABS dissolved in suspension. Three generous coats a few minutes apart, then don't touch it for a good week so it has time to cure properly, and you've coated whatever you painted with ABS plastic. From here I'm in the process of sanding/polishing everything as mirror-smooth as I can manage. Sandpaper and polishing films all the way up to the equivalent of 10,000 grit.

The right knee and sabaton are still playing catch-up, as are the gauntlets and helmet. I need to do some testing of the next step while I'm continuing to work on those, before I commit with all the fully-prepped pieces.

Might be because the chaff drums and heat sinks are from a couple old speeder bike model kits. ;)

If the weather holds just a bit longer, I'm hoping I'll get some of the remaining pieces undercoated this weekend. For anyone monitoring this -- commenting or not -- who knows about the WOF gauntlet templates, I'm posting a question over in my gauntlet build thread (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=27379.msg1248712#msg1248712) about fit issues...
