Title: New/First Weapons - WIP! (Pic Heavy - Completed DL-33 on pg. 6!)
Post by: Jaa'det Otxoa on Aug 10, 2012, 02:33 PM
Greetings Vode!

So I was out driving and came across this at a little tag sale on the side of the road:
The best part is that the lady wanted $10 for the whole box! Ori'jate!
So after being laid up for close to a month after a back injury I was down in the basement and the box 'o blasters started calling.  :o

So out of the box of 7 Nerf blasters I eyeballed a couple victims.... er, promising bases for 2 weapons to go with my new persona...
And the victims are:
I chose the LongStrike CS-6 and the Nite Finder EX-3, being that my new persona is a scout/sniper it was logical to use the longest blaster in the box... and of course you have to have the sidearm for those close-combat situations!  ;D

Next... Starting the Sidearm!

I look forward to see what you do with the Longstrike.  I have one at home, but haven't decided how to modify all the "Nerf-y-ness" out of it.

I love moding Longstrikes ;D Iv done two now ;D my advise to get red of the nerfyness, Chop chop chop glue glue glue sand sand sand fill fill fill

in other words chop it up glue it back together sane off all the nefy bits (like those raised dots)  and then bondo it up a bit ;)

Yep! had some fun with the jigsaw last night...  :P I'll be posting some pics of the mods to the Night Finder soon! Ha, it resembles a DL-22 at this point, planning on adding a scope from CPVC fittings and some greebs from an old hard drive!

UPDATE: Starting work on the Nite Finder, looking to make this a small sort of DL-22 or DL-44 style holdout blaster to use on a shin or thigh holster (depending on the finished size). So now on to the progress of the build:
So this is after the initial cracking the case and removing the nerf "core" and lens for the "laser sight":
Then after staring at the empty shell trying to envision what direction to take, debating on keeping the wiring intact or rewiring... out came the jigsaw and a little bit of streamlining:
Next it was off to Lowes and walking around the plumbing department trying to find materials to make a new barrel and scope.
What I came up with was to use 1/2" CPVC pipe since the fittings available vary more than normal PVC since the pipes have to be adaptable to connect to different types of plumbing pipes and this is what i have so far:
I am thinking that the barrel may be too long for a DL style blaster,  :-\ I am also debating on adding a tac light (9 LED mini flashlight) to the side of the charge chamber in front of the trigger and wiring it into the original trigger switch or just relocating the original internal led/housing for the laser sight to the top of the blaster or maybe both?
Another thing I am planning on doing is to add frosted plexi windows where the original nerf air chamber showed through the sides, illuminated by an LED as a Power/Armed indicator.
I do have most of the parts to build the scope as well, just need to get a few more pieces to replace the ones I ended up having to use to center the barrel in the body.
I know more de-nerfing is necessary (AKA, get rid of the big nerf logo in the "knob"... that will be taken care of with greebs in the form of a rotating switch cover to hide the pushbutton 'arm switch' to be mounted where the original nerf cocking ring was located).
Let me know what you think?  ;D

UPDATE!!
Finally got to work a bit more on my sidearm...
I decided to shorten the barrel by 1.25" and added additional internal support for the barrel where it runs through the body:
I also have the basic body of the scope and approximate positioning of where it will be mounted on the blaster (I need to get new mounts since the one's I bought were a bit large for the diameter of the body of the scope)
Next steps:
- De-logo body
- Internal "Power/Armed" illumination
- "Laser Sight"

STAY TUNED...

Scope time...  ...and I'm not talking about the mouthwash!  :P

So I decided to relocate the "Laser" sight that was originally under the barrel to create a laser scope.
here are the parts:

1. The lens removed from dismantled sight with the adjustment arms removed and sanded smooth:

2. The "Laser" (red dot LED) assembly, after rewiring and shaving:

3. 3/4" CPVC, drilled out one end with a step bit to accommodate the diameter of the trimmed lens:

4. 3/4" to 1/2" CPVC coupler drilled out (to allow more of the lens to be seen)

5. Test fit all components and mount LED assembly in the other end of the sight and here is the business end!

Wiring time!!!
So I decided to start on the lighting for the blaster last night... To start things off, I scrapped the LED strip from a busted lightsaber from my stepdaughter's 'Jedi Training Academy' birthday party last year
First thing was to add illumination to the rear of the scope for the viewfinder end of things:
1. I drilled a couple holes in the Red dot sight LED PC board for a rear LED
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NF_Scope7.jpg)

2. Next the epoxy coating was scraped away around the new holes and the led is soldered in
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NF_Scope8.jpg)

...And here's what it looks like when the trigger is pulled
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NF_Scope9.jpg)

...And when it's in the scope... (When mounted the wiring will be routed out the side of the body of the scope)

To hide the rear LED I will be making a Viewfinder/crosshair mask out of some heavy cardstock so that the crosshairs show when the trigger is pulled and mounting some type of lens in front of it.

Next step for the build is the "Activation/Power indicator":
I figured instead of bondoing the side windows I would use them as a power indicator...
The original idea was to put a piece of frosted clear plexi in the windows and illuminate with a couple LED's.
Instead I decided to use a piece of 5/8" I.D. clear reinforced tubing (for 2 reasons... It was easier to get & It was cheap & It looked cool! OK that's 3, nobody said I was the best at counting!  :P) and some of those scrapped lightsaber LED's
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder6.jpg)

1. I cut it down to fit the gap between the internal couplers, drilled 3 holes the same diameter as the LED's, wired up the LED's to a switch to be mounted just above the trigger and voila, here it is installed on the blaster's core:

And with the shell on:

And a couple of close-ups of the window:

Next steps:
- Mount/glue all of the electronics in the body
- Mount/wire the scope
- Sand down, paint & mount the barrel
- Reassemble the body and Fill all of the gaps in the body
- Smooth out all logos & add greebs
- Paint & weather!

Vor'e! Vode... I am liking how this is coming along (except for how long it is taking  :-[)

So I decided to De-nerf the NightFinder along with streamlining it a bit more...
1. Removed nerf logo on the side knob using a palm sander with 60 then 120 grit
2. Remove warnings/serial number
3. Removed the top sight rail
4. Made the trigger look cooler (added detail)

I also smoothed out all of the raised lettering on the edges of the CPVC couplers on the scope
I am trying to figure out what would be the best method to fill the gap at the front of the blaster where the red-dot sight was originally mounted, want it to have a heatsink look to it similar to the DL blasters, (need to go through my old PC parts) so i need to find a solid enough (non-porus) material that I can fill the gap... I'm thinking of using epoxy to hold a piece of  scrap plastic or maybe metal putty (quicksteel epoxy putty)  :-\ I am just concerned that sanding/molding may be difficult once it is fully cured, so opinions/suggestions are welcome!  ;D

...Next step... finalizing internal wiring & start priming!

UPDATE
Finally got my LED's & Switches (& Quickly killed 3 LEDS ) but I did get a few more things done here...

One of my co-workers gave me a dead laptop hard drive so, guess what?? After a little disassembling... Greeblies!!!

Next, on to the barrel electronics, mounting the switch for the lamp...
First, I trimmed down the new momentary switch and the spring pin on the trigger so that the LED's in the barrel will light only when the trigger is fully pressed:

Next, I trimmed down a notch in the end of the trigger spring channel:

And mounted everything back in place...

I have to get some resistors so I don't kill any more LED's and finish the wiring for the Barrel LED's

I also mounted the LED's in the scope by wrapping the trimmed down Red-dot sight internal assembly with some paper packing tape, notched out for the wiring and drilled the hole in the body of the scope to for the wiring and carefully inserted the wrapped LED assembly:

More to come...

UPDATE TIME!

So after a snafu with getting the wrong resistors for the LED I finally got the correct ones for the orange barrel LED's and was able to resume work on the NiteFinder WIP (I really need to come up with a spiffy name for this thing! :P)

Anyhoo... Here is the assembled LED array for the barrel:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder16.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder17.jpg)
(If anybody is curious, I used 3 x 3mm Orange LED's with an 82 Ohm resistor connected to each negative lead, wrapped the positive leads with electrical tape and then shrink wrapped the whole thing)

Here is pretty much the rest of the internal wiring with the "activation/safety" switch just above the trigger and the barrel LED switch both epoxied in place with 5-minute epoxy:

I was also walking through Home Depot when I spotted this sticking out of a box...

It's a shrub sprinkler head, I figured I could pull the filter out to use as the emitter for the muzzle
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder19.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder21.jpg)

Chopped down and then wrapped with electrical tape:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder22.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder23.jpg)

Then installed in the muzzle:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder26.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder27.jpg)

(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder24.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder25.jpg)

Then I took the 'Emitter" out and kinda' liked the way it looked without it...
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder28.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder29.jpg)
So now my dilemma is emitter or no emitter?  :-\
I was planning on painting the tip weathered silver so it is not a bright white tip in the muzzle...
But without the "emitter" it has more of the "hollow barrel" look like an actual weapon has...

??? OPINIONS PLEASE!!!!!  :P

Next thing is to come up with some way to connect the power for the scope, I am planning on an external quick disconnect just for ease of wiring.  ;D

not bad..... I would of not wired up everything till you got it all figured out
also would have done was use rechargeable  batteries with a recharge port so you never have to worry about dis-assembly.

As far as the emitter both look fine ...overall good job on the mod

The wiring is the easy part for me, the connection is actually wired it is just the connection of the leads from the batteries and the scope using some sort of connector that isn't obviously RL, I have come up with an external pin connector that can be hidden under a greeb on the dial shaped disk that I will be installing soon.

As far as the batteries, I would use rechargeable batteries but even those do die eventually and I would have to crack the case to get to them anyways,  I already have a plan to hide the screw hole for the battery door using a rubber plug with a greeb on the end that would attach to the pommel, hiding the bottom hole completely, but leaving the functionality intact...

Thanks for the suggestions though!  ;D

I'm baaaacckkk!!   :P

With a small update

Got distracted with my bucket and kinda necro'd this thread... sorry ???

But I did figure out the external connector for the scope:  ;D

First thing was to make the contact pins:
1. cut a small paper clip in half and bend into the shape you see here
(uses higher guage wire that is small enough to fit into the connector I scrapped from an old PC I/O connector)
The loops are for soldering the leads from the original trigger switch to the scope

2. Solder the leads to the contact pins (note your polatity! I used positive to top and negative to the bottom)

3. Next I drilled 2 small holes (the smallest drill bit I had) from the inside of the right side (side without all of the wiring) against one of the supports behind the "dial"

4. Insert the pins through the holes and glue in place (I used E6000, they can also be hot glued)
I used a pair of small vise grips to hold the pins in place while the glue dried to make sure that the pins were held in the right position (you can also see a small piece of zip-tie that I cut and placed between the contact pins on the inside to keep them from touching and shorting out)

5. Once dried bend the pins forward at a 90o to lay flat against the side of the dial, cut to length and carefully use a dremel tool to flatten the edges (this makes it easier to insert the pins into the connector)

6. Next I soldered the PC I/O connector I mentioned earlier to the leads coming out of the scope and attached the scope "mounts"

Other changes: replaced the pushbutton switch to a micro toggle I scrapped off an old DSL modem I found:

Which caused me to modify the trigger a bit for clearance reasons:  :P
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder34a.jpg)

Here is what the interior wiring looks like at this point:  ;D
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder35.jpg)

(Please excuse image sizing issues, looks like Photobucket's recent "improvements" are causing all kinds of problems)

Gonna have to keep that hose trick in mind, 'cause that's pretty sweet.
Yep, I was originally going to go with frosted plexi, but wanted something really cheap as I am on an extermely tight budget!
I was looking for something that would transmit the light evenly and the fibers in the hose work like fiber-optics, so it was a no brainer when I saw the hose!

Planning on carrying the theme over to the rifle when I get to that one too!

On a side note, the replacement switch failed also,  ??? So I need to get another micro switch

Tiny update...

So, since the little switch from a scrapped DSL modem failed (decided it would stay ON no matter what position it was in ) I went out and grabbed the smallest one I could find from "The Shack"...

this one:
SPST PC-Mountable Submini Toggle Switch (Model: 275-645) (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062509)

So once I got it home the first thing was to CAREFULLY remove the failed switch, since it was glued in (epoxied) I had to be very careful to not damage any of the internal support structures that it was glued to using a flat-head screwdriver and needle-nose pliers to slowly pry the switch out!  :o

Once it was out and all the dried epoxy was chipped out I desoldered the leads for the "power core" illumination

Next I checked to make sure the orientation of the switch in it's "on" position so that the toggle is in the forward position when switched on (this is so that the switch will be pushed into the "off" position when holstered)

Once I knew which way is "up" on the switch I carefully and slowly bent the contacts down at a 90o angle and resoldered the leads to the new switch and installed the switch into the existing hole:
With the modification of the pin orientation there was actually more clearance for the trigger with the new switch as opposed to the failed switch!  ;D

This is what the outside ended up looking like:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder38a.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder38b.jpg)
To keep the switch from twisting I had to install the keyed washer with the alignment pin, this required that the position of the alignment pin was marked and a shallow hole (1/8" dia.) drilled just under the edge of the dial for it, as well as grinding flush the edge of the "grip" where the washer overlaps (you can see where the black paint is missing) so that the washer can lay perfectly flat. once the washer is in place I put the lock washer and nut and tightened everything up... and Voila... switch replaced!

The only thing I didn't like about the new switch was the height,  :P so I took my trusty Dremel and chopped it down to about 1/4" high and smoothed off the edges like so:

That's it for now... Next steps...
Assembly, scope mount and filling/Bondo!

Stay tuned!!! ;D

Progress...  ;D

Started working on the scope mounts here...

This is what I will be using as a reinforcement insert for the scope mount points, it's a hollow-wall anchor I found and cut down to about 1/4" high:

So the starting point was to mark where the holes for the scope mounts line up on the top of what's left of the sight rail:

Once marked, I drilled out the holes to the proper diameter (1/4") starting with a 1/16" pilot hole stepping up to the 1/4" bit in 1/32" increments to avoid cracking the plastic on the top surface:

I was holding the body together with spring clamps to keep pressure on the parts since I was drilling through the top seam as opposed to screws so that I could easily re-open the body to clean out the flashing left from drilling out the holes (You can still see the flashing on the left half of the body... actually that's the right half  :P):

Since the inserts have a "cross hair" pattern to them I notched this into the edges of the holes using a cutting disk on my dremel...
(also had to make sure the support structure under the front hole was cut away enough for the insert to sit flush with the top)

And with the inserts in place:

Lastly I used the grinding stone bit (http://www.dremel.com/en-us/Accessories/Pages/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=932) to make an indentation in the bottom of the sight mounts so that they will sit flush once mounted:

Last thing... can't make this permanent yet as I noticed that one of the LED's in the barrel is not working! ??? So, once I fix that... this will be going together and made permanent!

Not on this build, but stay tuned for the sniper build... planning on lights and sound!  ;)

Would love to get my hands on a Plecter Labs Blaster Core™ V4.0 (http://www.plecterlabs.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=1148) or Blaster Core™ V4.0 with color mini screen (http://www.plecterlabs.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=1150) but will probably have to seek out a cheaper alternative and upgrade later down the line  :P

About 110 for the non-screen version. Erv hasn't made any for a while though.

Yeah, the price is what is prohibiting me from using those, but I have found a few alternatives that are sound only in the $50 -$60 range that can either be custom programmed or use a micro SD to customize the sounds and have multiple triggers (clip in/out, trigger, power hum, blaster shot & recharge is what I have in mind)

*spoiler*
The LongStrike sniper mod will be pre-wired with switches for all the sound triggers and will have a "functional" illuminated power clip!  ;)

*James Bond theme music playing* "Gooollld Trigger!"

So started some of the paint apps on here!

First thing I had to do was to pre-paint the trigger since once I start doing the filling/Bondo I won't be able to get to the trigger to paint it properly, so here it is, the "Gold Trigger":
(Don't worry it will be weathered with the rest of the blaster once i'm done with the filling)

And to address the gaping hole where the "laser" sight was mounted this is what I came up with:
(sorry no detail pics on how I did this... I know, FAIL on my part :-[)
But here's what I did:
- First - I took one of the inserts from the original "spare ammo mount" and split it apart (they aren't glued together) and used the half with the deeper part of the "holding tubes"
- Next I cleaned up the molding seams on the inside of the opening with the small grinding stone for my Dremel so that the insert fit square into the opening with an even gap all around.
(Here is the seam I am talking about, it is mirrored on the other side as well)
- Next I test fit the insert, then filled the bottom 3 - 5 mm of the insert openings with some PlasticWeld (here is the link (http://www.homedepot.com/buy/j-b-weld-2-oz-kwikplastic-adhesive-putty-stick-8237.html#.US-BcaIZy84) to what I bought) and pressed into place with the butt of a 1/2" drill bit (you can see the slight indentation in the middle from the chamfered edge of the bit)
- Once the "plugs" start to set I placed the insert into place and filled in the gaps with the PlasticWeld using a razor blade to push the putty into the gaps so there is less sanding once it dries!  :P

And this is what I have at this point:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder50.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder51.jpg)

Next steps: Bondo time!!!   ;D More filling (Gaps & Screw holes)

Update time!!  ;D

Got a pretty good amount of work done since my last post, (which means lots o' pics) so here goes...

After the initial filling with Bondo I went back and used the QuickPlastic to fill the remaining screw holes, hole in the back where the "cocking ring" was (wow that almost sounds really bad! ) and reshape the lower portion of the grip:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder54.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder55.jpg)
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder56.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder57.jpg)

And after a bit of sanding and shaping (Used a combination of Palm sander with 150# and 600#, small grinding stone and diamond cutting wheel on the Dremel and Hand sanding with 150# and 220#) Here is what it looks like:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder58.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder59.jpg)
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder60.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder61.jpg)

Next I taped off all the important bits (power window, trigger, switch, battery holes), used a 1/2" dowel built up with masking tape and plugged the muzzle (protects the barrel LED's as well as works as a stable handle for paining) and primed the body:
- Side shots:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder62.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder63.jpg)

- Reshaped lower grip:

- Radiator vents:

I also prepped and primed the scope and battery door (when doing this remove the contact plate on the inside by removing the 2 screws holding it in) as well as removing the retaining screw. I used a small diameter screw with a bolt on the back for a spacer then screwed the parts into a piece of 1/2" edge moulding so I had a stable way of holding the pieces while I painted them.
(Sorry, no pics at the moment, I will post them later)

I'm using Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2x paints (http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100670412/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=rust-oleum+primer&storeId=10051#.UTS3tqIZy84) for this (and my entire kit) primarily because it is cheap and it also bonds to plastics well!

Think I may need to do a bit of wet sanding in a few spots, a second coat of primer, prior to starting the final paint apps... Any opinions?

Painting time!  :P

So, got the silver paint (Rust-Oleum 2x Aluminum (http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/100670427#.UTX9pGwo670)) last night and got the metallic base coats on all of the parts:

In the pic you can see how I mounted the scope and battery cover to the trim pieces for painting, works alot better than a coat hanger (tried it first, had to redo the battery cover because it flew off when I was painting  >:(, screws hold much better and make it easier to hold the pieces stable while spraying)

Another slight change after this pic was taken... I made a template for a mask out of poster board to go around the front "exhaust vents" and they have been sprayed gold as well!  ;D

Just a note here on my spraying method... First thing, with the paints I am using, the Rust-oleum 2x (and some others) keep in mind that it is extremely easy to spray way too much, use light, quick strokes when painting, if you stop or slow down too much the paint will drip! Also, since I am spraying in my basement (about 55o -  65o F I wanted to make sure the paint set well initially, so an old trick from my airbrushing days was as soon as a good, even coat is on, I use my heat gun on low to do the initial drying, on plastics it helps to warm up the plastic and will bond better!

Next steps let the paint dry thoroughly, then toothpaste mask and semi gloss black (Rust-Oleum 2x Semi-Gloss Black (http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/202071351#.UTX-NGwo670))  ;D

Paint Apps!  ;D

So I got the paint started on this thing! Went for a different weathering technique here...
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder67.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder68.jpg)

Went for a "carbon scoring" look on the muzzle using Flat Black Rust-Oleum primer and dried quickly with the heat gun to get the cracle look:

And the butt cap/battery cover:

And the scope:

The way I weathered everything was a 3-part method
1. I put a pretty good coat of paint on the entire thing and once it started to "tack up" (within 1-2 minutes) I took a crumpled up plastic bag and pressed it into the paint on the leading edges where I wanted the larger "chips"
2. Took a straightened paper clip with the last 1/4" of one end bent to a 90o and lightly scraped the front/high edges  to reveal the silver under paint
3. On the sides of the handle I was going to try to "re-texture" the grip/guard area by using a dry brush and "stippling" (tapping with the tip) with a dry brush, then lightly re-misting the black semi-gloss over the area that was re-textured so that some of the silver layer shows through.

So let me know what you think?

Keep in mind I do have a few things that will be addressed:
- Small chip on the right side under the illuminated window will be painted to look like damage
- touch up all of the nook & crannies with black paint
- Trigger and Radiator on front to be weathered with black wash
- Pipe screens for the radiator ports
- Paint details on body & grip
- Rear scope lens/illuminated reticle
- Assemble the fierfekkin' thing!    ???

Now... OPINIONS PLEASE!!! :P

OK, tiny update...

added a little bit of color here:

Not sure why but the colors came out alot brighter than they actually are...
There is a little bit of toothpaste weathering on the red stripes that has yet to be removed, then fill in the nooks and crannies, assemble and build the rear scope lens/reticle insert...  ???

Just picked up some brown & black acrylic paint yesterday so black/brown washes are next on the list! ;)

Vor'e vod!

I used an old technique I used to weather my lightsabers (primarily PVC) using a plastic bag, I described it earlier:
Just remember to let the paint dry completely, I had a few issue spots that I was luckily able to turn into weathering where the silver layer had not completely cured, The paint i'm using actually says to wait 5 days for full cure on plastics... (I rushed it by a couple days and laid the silver after 3 days, then the black after another 3...  :-[ At least the primer layer was finally cured by the time I sprayed the black... )

Thats nice ;) the colour is great ;D
Thanks, Niabi. Glad you think so!  ;D

Want to let the paint fully cure for another day then add the black/brown washes to finish the paint job off, then add the reticle insert to the scope!
Over all I'm very happy with it, the nice thing about leaving the batteries and adding the lighting & modified barrel is that the weight is nice and balanced and doesn't feel like a hollow shell prop!   :P

Little update...

Did a little weathering here...  ;D

So what do you guys think?  :P

Still have the last couple of things to do to complete this one...
1. Find the parts to fix the reticle on the scope
2. Hit it with some satin clear to protect the weathering
3. Decide if I should use the "emitter" insert in the muzzle or not? :-\

Thanks Niabi! The main thing that stands out to me it the big "dial" on the back, I actually have an idea to obscure it that will also give me a more solid sight rail to re-mount the scope (the inserts came loose and just don't seem sturdy enough for me , Call it overkill... but I want things to be solid when I build something!  ;D)

Scope update!!!  ;D

Sorry for the delay here,  ??? (Went back to working on my buy'ce (http://tinyurl.com/mercbucketwip) for a little bit) figure I'd wrap up the scope here...

So here are the parts for the rear reticle (most of them):

The "reflector" and "rear bezel" started out as a 1" x 3/4" CPVC Bushing (http://www.lowes.com/pd_49325-322-50217Y_4294765344__?productId=3341638&Ns=p_product_price|0) like this:

Here are the finished reflector and rear bezel:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder92.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder94.jpg)

The reflector was made by cutting the last 5mm or so of the fitting off (cut to the stop ring on the inside of the fitting), then using the sanding attachment on my Dremel to cut a taper on the inside, then painting with the same silver paint I used on the body.
The Bezel was made by cutting the flange end off about 4mm behind the lip, then hollowing the middle out to approximately 2mm thick and taking off the lettering on the face and rounding the inside slightly to give it a more finished look.

The spacer is a piece of 1" copper cut about 5mm long
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder93.jpg)

The lens is from the stock visor on the J2P that I am using for my Buy'ce cut to fit the inside diameter of the rear of the scope (1 1/8" dia.):
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder95.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder90.jpg)

The actual reticle insert is made of 3 layers of transparency paper. I designed and printed the reticle using Illustrator, the design is composed of 2 grayscale "gobos" or "plates" and one black & white version (all but the last one seen here):
The layers were then lined up with the first 2 grayscale layers back to back (printed side out) then the black & white layer was aligned with the back against the other layers, once aligned the layers were taped in place (layer 1 to 2 and layer 3 to 2) so they looked like this:

Once they were aligned I super-glued the first 2 layers together along the perimeter of the reticle and let them dry on a perfectly flat surface with a book on top for about 15 minutes then repeated the procedure for the last layer (be careful when putting the super-glue down as it is a solvent based glue, put it on the back side of the black & white layer when gluing to the printed side of the other layer and avoid twisting or relocating as it will smudge the printed side ???) and allow to dry for 15-20 minutes as before.
Once dry, I cut out the reticle "gobo" with a sharp pair of scissors (or X-acto knife, try to avoid bending the glued reticle) and test fit it into the scope:

This is where I realized that the LED was almost perfectly visible through the reticle, so I came up with a way to diffuse it...
A Vitawater bottle cap!

Here it is once the rubber inside seal was removed and it was trimmed down to the proper size:

Next I put the reflector, then the diffuser, then the copper spacer using the rear bezel to pressure fit all the pieces in place:

And another test fit with the diffuser and rear lens:
Trigger off/Scope off:

Trigger half-pull/Scope on:

I am also working on a version of the reticle without the figures (the first attempt at gluing smudged *fail* :-[) I'm re-printing those and the bezel is in the paint at the moment...

More pics to come with those soon! ;D

Post by: Jaa'det Otxoa on Apr 16, 2013, 11:15 AM
So, I was working on the scope the other night and this happened:  ???
 :o ???
So I took it as an opportunity to reinforce the upper sight rail and obscure the profile a little
So I made a template for a reinforced sight rail out of posterboard and transferred it to the lid of a popcorn tin I had laying around (Coincidentally it was a Star Wars tin from X-mas ):

I also made a reinforcing rail out of slightly heavier gauge steel to go under the thinner top rail, here it is next to the bent and trimmed top rail ready for paint:

The arms on the sides wrap around the opening in the sides and the "hooks" overlap the dial shapes on the side of the blaster, they will be held in place by small screws and epoxy.

So I will hopefully be able to assemble it tonight and weather it up a bit! ;D
Title: Re: New/First Weapons - WIP! (Pic Heavy)
Post by: Jaa'det Otxoa on Apr 19, 2013, 06:03 PM
I think it's done!!!!  :o

So the few last details were done here:
The front exhaust vents... they just looked too plain to me so I grabbed some brass pipe screens like this:

... and super glued them into the vents, like this:

... then weathered them, like this:
... and voila, better looking exhaust vents! ;D

Now on to repairing the top rail...

First I mounted the heavier rail directly to the top like so (yes, there is a spot where I have to repair the Bondo, was going to hook the rail into the body but changed my mind, it ended up getting filled with the PlasticWeld :P):
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder107.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder108.jpg)

Once flush mounted and slightly crimped onto the top, I mounted the upper (over) rail on top like so:
The "arms" on the side wrap around and into the gap for the window of the "power core" and are screwed into the sides of the dials.

I had to add some "body lines" so that the pieces fit flush against each other, then screwed the over rail to the reinforcement top rail at the back where the hammer would usually be:

I also mounted the bezel to the scope and glued it down with some E6000:

After some weathering on the new parts (was really easy since they are actually metal! ;)) here is the final blaster:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder116.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder115.jpg)
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder111.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder112.jpg)
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder113.jpg)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Resized/NiteFinder114.jpg)

Been trying to come up with a good name for it... it looks kinda like a small DL-44 or a large DL-22, so this shall be known as the DL-33  ;D!

So waddaya think Vode??

That it is ner Vod!  ;)
It is somewhat inspired by your longstrike/verp mods! I am trying to keep the length of the body on this one though since it is more of a "sniper style" verp! I am also building it with lights (to be upgraded with sound later) so there will be multiple switches integrated into the build for light/sound triggers!

This should be a fun one!  :P

Just remember that your ability to reach across your body to draw it will be limited by your armor, from what I have heard.

Yep, I realized that last night when I test fit my torso plates, ??? the holster would be positioned lower on my side where I can actually reach, and draw it... It will require a bit of R&D to get it made but I prefer the option since I have a leg pack that fits on my right leg only so a drop-leg gun holster is out.  :P

 :oRise zombie thread!!! :o

Ok, I couldn't leave well enough alone... first post-OM upgrade!

Since I'm going for Spec Ops: Sniper brigade membership I will be needing a bladed weapon of some sort...

So I am going for a simple besk'ad:
(Sorry no pics of the first steps here :P)
- First, I traced the pattern twice (one right side up and one upside down) onto the same material I used for my plates (thin wall 4" solid PVC Sewer/Drain pipe from Lowes)and rough cut the pieces out.
- Next I heated up the rough cuts with my heat gun, flattened both halves perfectly flat and re-traced the pattern to the flattened pieces (this had to be done because when tracing onto the pipe while round you actually lose some length when the piece is flattened.
- Next I drilled holes in each of the corners of the blade/handle on both halves (to use as alignment holes when gluing the halves together), I then cemented the halves together, placing nails in the alignment holes until the initial set, removed them and compressed them between two 1x4's with C-clamps and Sprimg clamps overnight...

...and this is what it looked like at that point ;D:

- Next was to cut out the blade with the jigsaw with a fine tooth blade, then clean up the edges with the Dremel and palm sander:

- I made the grip to be used in either the normal or inverted position:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd03.jpg~original)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd04.jpg~original)

- I also started shaping the main and top swage blade "edges":
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd05.jpg~original)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd06.jpg~original)

I still have to cut the thumb guard, add the blade cut-outs and lanyard hole then the wooden handle sides that will be held down with chicago screws.

Stay tuned... ;)

Got a little bit more done!

I haz handles! ;D
Shot of the plywood handle after shaping with the Dremel tool and then a decent once over by hand with 150 grit sandpaper:

And the first coat of stain:

I still need to beat them up a bit more and put a couple more coats of stain as well as burning something in Mando'a into the handle, just have to decide what it's going to be!  ???

OK, I got a couple updates on my besk'ad...

First off I cut out the lanyard loop in the pommel and added the holes to the blade from the original concept:

I also added the wood burning to one side of the handle:

Then promptly realized I had misspelled "Ijaat" as "Ijat"...  after I had burned it  ???

The inscription reads "Ijaat o'r kyr'am" or "Honor in Death"

I have also done 2 coats of auto primer (with wet sanding in-between) and 2 coats of aluminum base coat:

The blade will be painted flat black with some decorative designs to expose the silver base on the side of the blade as well as the blade edges ;D
Then It will get assembled with chicago screws and weathered as a single piece ???

Appreciated Bud! 8)

Got the matte black layer painted and some more natural light weathering like you would see on an actual hard anodized blade:
Overall:

Detail of Edge and "Blood groove/Holes"

This was done using 600 grit sandpaper after a single coat of flat black dried with my heat gun... ...Took all of 10 minutes from start to finish ;)

looking awesome ;) Love the work on the handles
Thanks Niabi!

I don't believe I forgot to post updates on this sucker! ???
Well... here goes...
Here is the handles mounted to the blade using 1" Chicago screws:

Well with the custom shape of the handles there was a wee bit of a gap at the front of the grip

So I took a scrap of the glued PVC that had been cut off and shaped it to fill the gap:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd18.jpg~original)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd19.jpg~original)

And after some silver paint, glue and weathering... Voila!  ;D
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd23.jpg~original)

And some more shots after the whole thing was weathered and had about 5 coats of matte clear:
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd20.jpg~original)(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd21.jpg~original)

Close up of the Mando'a inscription:

And a bit of a "happy accident" The last layer of clear bubbled a bit in this area but left a cool "pitted" look to the finish!  ;D
(http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/moonknight75/Star%20Wars/Madalorian%20Mercs/Weapons%20Builds/Beskad/BeskAd24.jpg~original)

Now I just need to make a sheath that will be mounted to one of my greaves!

Yep, one step close to having all the parts for sniper brigade!! 8)

Nice save on that gap in the handle.  As a knife maker I was going to suggest a fix, but as I kept scrolling down, I saw that you did exactly what I was going to suggest.   Good looking piece of work.
