Title: Celebration VI - Rosen Plaza Issues

Just wondering if anyone else has been having problems with the Rosen Plaza? It just seems to be getting worse and worse.

Just bad service. Employees not doing their job. Don't get me started on valet tonight. The past few days it has just gotten worse and worse. I didn't get a wake-up call Saturday, when I asked for one. Housekeeping never came back like I asked them to cause I was in the room at the time. I've never had so many problems with a hotel before.

lol
That was my issue with the valet folks, they were to busy watching those crazy Star Wars folks to get my car. lol

Being accused of things by the manager just wasn't sitting right with me. Well problem is solved, I just moved to the Rosen Center for the night.

I've actually been seeing dozens of complaints on FB. Again, I'm really really hoping C7 won't be Florida again next year...I just doubt I'm that lucky.

What gets me really with CVI this year, is that CV was such a good event. Yet, so many things at the convention got done poorly. The best part was the totally cool Mercs Bunker though. I think of all the fan club showings the Mercs made a very good one. Perhaps the best of the event in my opinion.

Well, I unfortunately was not able to make it this year...or to CV...or 4...simply because of financial issues that I plan on conquering before the next one...I just have no desire at all to have to go to Florida to attend it. Honestly I'd rather go like Chicago, LA, or even like Seattle, or well...honestly just not so far away, I live in Nevada, so traveling to East Coast is always a bit more expensive than traveling to somewhere on the West Coast.

Had I attended, I assure you the Hotel Manager and I would have had a lot of conversations. :)

Sorry to burst your Bubble but I was informed that the next one is in Florida.  They contracted with te Covention Center to do 3 of them here so well We will be heading back to Florida when CVII happens

And is it going to be next year have they said anything about it being next year

Oh, I haven't heard anything about that. Most likely it will be two years from now. Just like this was. Of course a one year wait would be a lot more interesting than two :)

I'm kinda in the same boat, I'm a native of Florida. So having it in Florida is good for me, as would anywhere in the South East really. Why I've not gone to the ones before CV.

The main attraction to having it here in Orlando is all the extra stuff there is to do after the convention with it being such a tourist/entertainment driven city it really buffs up business across all boards. Either way I can't comment though on this year as I didn't attend due to work and school.

The only reason i went was because of those other things.  We did two weeks at disney.  I'm not flying internationally cross-country for a weekend.  If we go, it had better be worth it in other things to do... I know we aren't the only ones who see it that way.

I had the opportunity to deal with the manger at the Rosen Plaza this afternoon. I went back to the room to rest and my key was not working...I went to the front desk to ask for assistance and the manager was called. He informed me(rather sternly) that since my name was not on the reservation he could not let me in the room. I was polite and explained that the person who reserved the room was at the convention center, but was  told that I would have to go fetch him so he could show his ID in person to desk clerk before they could let me in the room.

It was raining and my 9 year old daughter was hungry, tired and crying at this point. I understand the thinking behind the policy, but I still felt like the overall treatment I received was more rude than helpful.

The only issue we had was that we were suppose to have 3 beds instead of two. They reimbursed us for the bed but it did not really solve the issue of being only two beds. We ended up making a bed out of pillows for the third mando to makeup for the loss.

But I myself had a great time at the Rosen and would be happy to be there again.

Yeah. I cant get the internet to work for more than 5 minutes at a time and it is slow as hell. Plus everything is over priced. 14 dollars for a pizza? I work at tops and make pizzas every day...a pizza that size where i make them is about 7 dollars.....and that is our small. The large at tops will feed 4 people and is only 15 dollars. 3.75 for a soda?!

This alone has made my experience totally worthless

Internet is kinda sucky, and I had issues with my room key not working for the first room they put us in (the lock on the door turned out to be broken). But they guy they sent up to do that (don't know who he was) was actually really nice and told them to move us 'cause the lock wasn't going to get fixed any time soon and when they moved us to a room really far from the elevator (we were right off it) he called the front desk back and told them to find us one closer. He actually rolled his eyes when he got off the phone with them and was all like "They were like 'Just send the guest down to have them do it' but I figure they have computers right there so they can do it while we're up here 'cause it's just stupid to go all the way back down." lol (Dude was awesome.)

(To give you an idea of how much my internet is sucking, I can't get the LAN connection to work at all when I plug the cable in. And my wireless has gone out 3 times while I was typing this.)

I was actually really careful with my key cards this con. At D*Con I had the same issue of my card getting killed (like an idiot I put it next to my cell phone in my pocket) and found out I couldn't get a replacement since I wasn't on the reservation.

The Internet problem was probally because everyone was trying to use the internet at the same time.  They probally dont  have a huge amount of people like this showing up and neediing to use the interneet constantly and Im guessing that they dont charge you for internet connectivity then they are not going to upgrade it just for a convetion that shows up once every couple of years

I have to agree with the internet problems.  I've had no issues tonight after most people have left.

Mine was fine most of the days. Tonight it's been dropping every several minutes. Which is weird because I was sitting here going "Huh, everybody is leaving, the internet should be better than it was on the first night."

I just have bad luck with technology recently I think. lol (I mean, my first door lock was broken, the power went out in a store we were at before we left WA despite it being a bright sunny day out, and the computer at another store wouldn't connect to the network when I came in. XD)

I ended up checking out of the Rosen Plaza last night. I was made to feel really unwelcome and uncomfortable by the night manager. Thankfully I was able to get a room over at the Rosen Center for the night. I had a better experience there. Much like I had earlier this year when I stayed there for MegaCon. Since I thought it was the Rosen the block of rooms was going to be in for CVI, and wanted to get a feel for how things would work getting to the convention center.

In retrospect I should've looked for another hotel when things really started going bad for me earlier in the weekend. I hated that I had to pay for two hotel rooms for the same night. But, it was a bit worth it to just get away from that place.

Actually, next year will be in Germany, for CE II.  http://www.starwarscelebration.com/Europe/ (http://www.starwarscelebration.com/Europe/)

As far as the next American one, I have not heard anything definite, only rumors of Orlando again.

And, as far as the actual topic of the post, my biggest complaint was the internet issues. I couldn't log on for about 3 hours Friday night.
Title: Re: Rosen Plaza Issues
Post by: Biohazard on Aug 27, 2012, 04:14 AM
Issues we've had:

- Failure to even get internet for 15+ minutes while waiting with the laptop open and all systems running. (other times, it starts immediately)
- Someone must've been accidentally assigned our room number or something because someone tried to get in. Thankfully we had the little flip door latch on.

But the big issues:

- They put a double hold on my card. $450 for the original stay, $112 for 'the first night to ensure my stay', and then dropped another $536 on us. All that meant was that we were $1000 less in our account because they put too many holds on our card. We couldn't use it for like two days. After six phone calls to the hotel to fix the issue, I called my bank and complained and they thankfully sorted it within the hour.

(of course, the next day the bank also freezes my card because I was using it ourside my normal purchase area... after being informed I was in Orlando the day before and using it dozens of times in the days previously. lol)

Oh, the hotel also charged us $30 a head for the Bash buffett, and they only had like three entres (meatballs, chiken wings, chicken strips), and then they turned around and charged us $3.50 for a small glass of any drink, including water and soda. And then gave us tiny--censored- plates.

I'm very NOT impressed with Rosen PLAZA. From what I've heard, the 501st had a great time with the Rosen Center. When they checked in, the staff had little "Welcome 501st" banners hanging from their nametags and such.

The security was a big issue for me. The security guards hassling us about weapons was pointless and we had lots of room key issues. The service was crap too. In 2014 my vote is for the Rosen Center.

I stayed at the Rosen Center, and that was by far one of the most helpfull and 'well oiled machine' hotels i've ever stayed at.   Valet parking was no-hassle, no issue.  The onsite food was excellent and affordable (sushi omnomnom).  Drinks were standard tourist hotel overprice, so meh there.  The staff was extremely courteous.. i cant stress it any more than to give the Center 5 stars.

Wow. These issues surprise me. For the Rancor Clan members that stayed at the Plaza, we had a really good experience. The staff was amazing with us. . . VictorVito lost his con pass at one point between the convention and the hotel - the stafff was super helpful and twice two different members came up to us to ask if he'd found it.

I was walking trash out of our room Friday evening (I'm one of those - keep the maid service out of my room since we had so much costuming stuff everywhere) - and one of the maids was getting off the elevator. She says, "Give that to me, I'll handle it for you." I initially told her I could handle it, but she wouldn't hear it.

The guys at the parking booth (not the valets) were great, too.

Yes, the internet was an issue, but I am thinking that with us rushing to upload photos and whatnot, we put quite a strain on their system. At least it was free. The food prices (here, and at the convention) were ridiculous. Other larger conventions I've done (GenCon for example) have inflated prices, but Celebration prices were amazingly high.

I had a blast, though, and would go back to the Rosen Plaza again.

Honestly, the only problem I had was the lack of internet (wireless or wired) service.  The staff treated us great!  As for food - well, hotel food is almost always overpriced and nasty.  We packed in sandwich stuff, red bull, beer and snacks and did just fine. Also, we checked out Sunday AM but they held my kit for me and let us stay parked until after the con!

I think the only issue for us was the internet but I'm used to it and i blame Rennick i know  he was bog ging  down the internet with his uploading of photos it's ok ner vod we don't fully blame you . You know i couldn't help myself  but mostly the Rosen wasn't bad for us until we went to check out they tried to charge us for valet parking but waived it when i explained we didn't use the valet but i can only speak for our experience as it seems others were not as fortunate

I tried to go down and grab one of those luggage carts from the lobby to carry down birthday bash supplies and was informed that I had to have a bellhop drive the thing for me... Like I needed a luggage cart license or something... and of course I'm then obligated to tip the guy.  I just wanted to move my own luggage, sheesh.

I was across I-4 from you guys in the Quality Inn Universal Suites (at 47.00 per night--really nice suites with free parking), and I couldn't get any sleep from hearing all the complaining you Rosen people were doing!  ;D

Although I did catch a glimpse of Bio walking around in his tighty-whities, through his hotel window...quite a thrill for me, I might add.... :P

I stayed at the Rosen Center for MegaCon I had a very good stay. I ended up going there for the Saturday night and had a good stay. They apologized greatly for my problems with the Rosen Plaza. Where at the Rosen Plaza I was blamed for the problems, not to mention a comment from the night manager about not wanting the Star Wars folks there. The two Rosen hotels are owned by the same person, they also own a third hotel that is a much more expensive hotel on International.

I was a bit amazed that the Rosen Center had better prices for food. Given from what I was told by one of the managers at the Rosen Plaza, the Center is a higher tier hotel. I suggest that once it is confirmed if their will be another Celebration in Orlando we look into getting a deal with the Rosen Center. Based on the part of the convention center that the event was in the Center is much closer. That would cut down the time to walk to and from the convention center in armor if need be in the hot humid Autumn weather of Florida.

At first I felt a bit bad about starting this thread, that was done in part from my issues with the hotel. I feel better now that it is place for those who had problems and didn't to give input about the hotel.

I had absolutely no problems with internet, food prices, or even staff....but then again I live in Orlando and all I had to do was drive 20 minutes. My only complaint was the parking fee for the convention center. I didn't wish to pay $13 to park! I was trying to get a friend who works at SeaWorld to pick me up and drop me off, but I ended up parking at Pointe Orlando. And I hope Celebration is here again! Simply because I am poor as hell and can't afford to fly around and stay in hotels. =P Lucky me! And Im curious, did anyone at all stay in the Peabody Hotel?

My only issue with the Rosen Plaza was starting Saturday afternoon the internet was spotty at best. However I was surprised to see no extra fee for the internet. Other than that I have no complaints, I had a great time. Definately enjoyed myself at the Darkside Grotto!
Oh I did hear two employees who where less than happy about us being their, they said something like: I'm so sick of this, and we have to deal with them till Monday. I got a laugh out of it.

Our experience at the Rosen Plaza was fine. The staff sure didn't appreciate us in particular, but I guess I can see why a bunch of folks in costume might seem like trouble. I am sure we've proven them wrong at every Orlando-based Celebration.

The wifi was slow, but I didn't mind. It was free, after all. Had it been a paid thing, I would have been upset.

The pool and hot tub were great.

The staff we dealt with were alright, though when checking in (in full kit), we were referred to a different associate. I think the guy who was starting to check us in was going to crack up laughing. :P Nonetheless, the staff were courteous in our dealings. At one point, Chro tried to walk through the lobby in his helmet and was told very politely to remove it. Everything was fine. :)

We're used to PortCon, a relatively small convention in our home state based in a hotel. The convention fills the hotel's rooms with paying customers every year, and for that they are grateful, I'd wager. The staff absolutely loves us, and we don't cause all that much fuss.

The Rosen Plaza is jaded, I think. They're used to a full hotel. Crazy costume kids are nothing special in their eyes, I guess.

By the looks of it, the Rosen Centre hotel had a skywalk to the convention center. Is this true? Such a thing would've been glorious; the morning walks to the main door in full kit were kind of rough. We Mainers are thick-blooded and warm up quickly. ;)

The staff was ok with us, nothing special. My room key stopped working and I had to get my fiance to tell them it was ok to give me a key(room was in her name). We were with Mav when we got confronted about the weapons. We stayed at the center for CV and they were awesome, friendlier, and a closer walk.

We actually had a really pleasant stay and the service was good. The food was good and we ended up eating most of our meals there. We had dinner at Jacks one night and the wife claims it was the best steak she has ever had (mine was almost that good too).

We actually paid for a roll away...was denied said roll away...then was billed for said roll away while being told (after showing my email which detailed said roll away was included) that they couldn't give it to us without dropping yet another $60. The con was great but fighting for something I paid for did bring the hotel down a few notches for me.

Well, you can take it to the bank that Rosen Plaza will be getting a not-very-nice letter from me.  2 wake-ups at midnight over the moving truck, giving someone else our room, and our room keys getting turned off really chapped my hide.

On the plus side, we were in the same hotel as the Fett actors, and hung out with them several times during the week.

Let's maybe start working on the Rosen Center now. See if we can get a block that's an actual block, and on one of the lower floors, so we can maybe get one of the hospitality suites in or near the block so we can have a Mercs hang-out spot that doesn't involve the lobby or potentially too-small rooms (depending on how many people end up congregating). And maybe get the Fett actors there in the block, too. After all, Jeremy is Mand'alor now. ;)

I didn't have any "issues", per se, with the Plaza... Just a few irritating niggles -- not being able to use the luggage carts, the good but meagre spread at the Bash (and the $3.00 tiny glasses of soda), wifi issues... But they also were nothing but friendly and ultra-helpful with stuff I personally had going on. No less than four packages shipped to me at the hotel (yay last-second costume assembly), the lock for our first room was broken, and they got that sorted post-haste (see Kora's post for details). Didn't have anyone raise an eyebrow about my costume. *shrug* All things considered, though, my vote is definitely for the Rosen Center for C7.

Plus, we had to call Maintance to fix the TV and unplug the drain in the shower.

Only got hassled once by security when we was headed for the Pool.

Everything was extremely overpriced. Soda Machine on 4th floor only took quarters.

Was the Merc block on the 4th floor? I spoke with Mercs who were put on 3rd and 8th floors. Seems like evryone was scattered.

Honestly, everyone my boyfriend and I interacted with was pretty friendly. The biggest issue we had was transportation, apparently Plaza doesn't like the yellow cabs coming up to the hotel so we had to take a Town & Country car one day...guy insisted we get a round trip to Disney ($75) and then didn't show up at the agreed time. I tried calling his number multiple times and no luck, when I talked to the guy working the desk he said there was nothing they could do and wasn't very helpful in terms of solutions. The only other time we took those cars we got the same woman twice and she was very nice but I don't like the fact that they let people potentially do this on their property. We also booked a shuttle to Universal Studios one day and it never showed up, but that was free.
We weren't in the hotel much though, we basically went right from Celebration to Disney/Universal after I got out of my kit so maybe the minimal interaction helped.

Yeah I can feel you all your guys pain I stayed at the Hyatt and i only had 4 bars for my internet the food they had for the free Contenntal Buffet was freshed cooked french toast, Hot Breakfast Sandwiches, Yogurt with all the trimmings Cereal and fresh fruit. The people was actually pleasant.  Im mean how crapy that was

I stayed home in my wonderful bed and ate food from my fridge. The only crappy service I got was my alarm clock deciding to go off earlier than planned.  :P Then again, I live here in Orlando.

I'm already working with the 501st LCO to try and get Mercs a room block at the Rosen Centre for CVII.  Between both Legions and the Mercs, we will probably fill up the entire hotel (no joke).  The 501st had over 60% of the hotel filled at CVI.

I will do absolutely everything I can to get the Centre for CVII, but it totally depends on how many rooms they can block out for us.

From what I heard they have a three event contract with the convention center, it would be strange if they had it somewhere else and then went back.
I could be wrong on that though.

Interesting how they're asking everyone to fill out questioneers about where'd they'd like it to be next year...everyone hears a lot when it comes to all these conventions... :)

The question wasn't so much "where would you like it to be next year" as it was "where would you be likely to attend a future Celebration." (Personally, I'm in the camp that thinks the next one will be in Orlando again, even if I'd prefer not, and after that it'll get moved.)

They asked that same question on the CV follow up emails. I'm 99% sure that we'll have at least one more in Orlando. After that I'm expecting them to move to either Indianapolis or back to the west coast for a few conventions.

I had a pretty good experience there. We were on the 5th floor and had no issues. 1 of our keys didn't work right off the bat but they fixed it asap. I was a little disappointed that the pool closed at midnight but I guess that is most places. It was pretty epic running into Jeremy Bulloch in the lobby a few times and seeing Temuera in the gym.

I will probally still stay at the Hyatt.  I enjoyed the guest services and I also liked the fact that I was able to get a great hot breakfast every morning for free,  I had no problem with the free internet and they had a decent gym and pool and was cheaper then most other hotels

I just wish we were all closer together. I was under the impression that if we got a "Mercs block" that they would be near eachother but that was incorrect lol

I think many of us were under the same impression. We were scattered.

I've actually been seeing dozens of complaints on FB. Again, I'm really really hoping C7 won't be Florida again next year...I just doubt I'm that lucky.

Hi Cando

florida  has no  personal state income tax

lucas, reed employees, talent and LFL employees went home with nice amount of money

they will have to pay federal taxes and  resident state income taxes( if the state has one) on the  earned amount

I was at CVI although wasnt part of forum yet i had a nice expirenced with my dad brother and dad's friend. We stayed at a wyndham resort about 15 minutes away from convention the only bad thing was the private gorcery store there at high prices but we had fun expecially with the pool(s) (they had like 8 pools) they had a game room, excersize room, and nice service their.  and we drove to the convention and parked at the side of the convention with free parking and we toook a bus over to the main hall.
