Verd'ika Corps
Strength through Honor

Since 2007, Mandalorian Mercs has allowed a limited sponsor-membership for the legal children of Official Members.  Over the years we've found out that while this type of membership is great for families who want to troop in-costume, it doesn't really help much where the under-18 crowd is concerned.  Legally, there are certain liabilities that the MMCC has to be aware of when it comes to minors.  Because of that, we have traditionally NOT allowed in minors (under-18) to hold any level of Official Membership without a parent/legal guardian holding current Official Membership.

In 2012 we started rolling around the idea of a kid's club for under 18 members, something that was mostly internet-based but could also morph into something larger if growth/need called for it.  That idea would set the ground-work for the "Verd'ika Corps" kids club.

Mission Statement:
The Verd'ika Corps exists as a safe, club-style organization for kids who are fans of Star Wars and Mandalorians.  "The Corps" allows children to show off their Star Wars love, and learn positive core values (Family, Ingenuity, and Community) they can apply in their lives.

Verd'ika Corps Goals:
1.  To provide a safe organization for children to show-off their love for Star Wars.
2.  To promote healthy attitudes in children through positive core-values.
3.  To prepare children for entering the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club as an Official Member when they come of age.

Children who apply to the Corps will be sorted by age into one of 3 "Battalions" within the club.

ShriekHawk Battalion:  Ages 4-8  Master Training Sergeant: Baelin Halon/Kevin Ward (Murraan Clan)

Strill Battalion:  Ages 9-13  Training Sergeant:  Ulrik Kanteer/Anthony Johnson (Vhe'rang Clan)

Mythosaur Battalion:  Ages 14-17  Training Sergeant:  Lady Bedlam/Kelly Sutton (Yustapir Clan)

FAQ:

Q:  Will the Verd'ika Corps have it's own website?
A:  Yes!  However there will not be a forum.

Q:  Is the Verd'ika Corps part of the MMCC?
A:  Verd'ika Corps members are NOT MMCC members, however the MMCC will sponsor and help fund the Corps.

Q:  I am an Official Member, and my child is already a Verd'ika member of the MMCC.  Can they also join the Corps?
A:  Yes.  Verd'ika MMCC members may join the Corps and still retain their Verd'ika MMCC membership.

Q:  Can Verd'ika Corps members troop with MMCC Official Members at events?
A:  ONLY AT THE DISCRETION OF THE HOST CLAN/SQUAD COMMAND STAFF.

Q:  Will Verd'ika Corps applicants have to build their costumes, similar to MMCC members?
A:  No.  Verd'ika Corps applicants can apply with a store-bought Mandalorian costume. (Boba/Jango Fett, Pre Vizsla, etc)

Q:  Is the Verd'ika Corps open to all children world-wide?
A:  Yes!  If a child can see the Corps' website and own a Mandalorian costume, they can apply for membership.

Q:  Will the Verd'ika Corps have patches and items similar to the MMCC?
A:  The Corps will run a limited amount of patches that will be available to Corps members and MMCC members.

Q:  What happens when a Corps member turns 18?
A:  At their 18th birthday, a Mythosaur Battalion member may apply for Official Membership in the MMCC.  Once approved as an MMCC Official Member, they will be dropped from the Corps automatically.  If the Corps member does not become an approved MMCC Official Member within 30 days of their 18th birthday, they will be dropped from the Corps automatically.

Q:  Will there be a Merit/Challenge System?
A:  Currently this is under development, once released Corps members will receive periodic challenges based on their battalion which focus on 3 things:  Engineering, Community, Invasion.  These challenges can range from easy to difficult, but they are designed to teach as well as encourage positive attitudes and volunteerism.

We'll be posting more information and updates about the Verd'ika Corps as it gets closer to May 4th.

Vor'e! Mandalore!  ;D

I think this is an excellent opportunity for younger recruits to feel alot more "A part of" the MMCC until they are old enough to become OM's, as well as making us more of a "Family" than we already are!
I have a feeling my stepdaughter will be asking me to hurry up and finish my kit so I can work on one for her (Thanks  ???)!

Oya! MMCC!!  ;D

I know this isn't really pressing, but out of curiosity, are there plans down the road for maybe a special sigil or something that Verd'ika Corps members who start at age 4 and go all the way through and become official Mercs at 18?  Maybe a patch or a pin?  It's obviously pretty far off, but I thought I'd throw it out there since I happen to have a 4 year old.  :)

Very cool.  I have been waiting for this to pop up.  I built a kit for my little cousin and couldn't send in his app since I am not his legal guardian. I would love for him to be part of the Verd'ika Corps and I know he will love it too.

Sounds like a great idea! Just one question, though.  I know kids can apply to the corps with a store-bought costume, but if they applied with one they made, would they have the same CRLs as OMs?
Title: Re: Verd'ika Corps Announcement

No.  That only applies to children of current Official Members who are shooting for "Verd'ika Membership" in Mercs.

Yes, you can buy a store-bought costume and enter the Verd'ika Corps.  It's a kid's club, it's not Mercs, therefore is needs to cater to what's more likely for a non-18yr old.

One comment on this. For the kids who do want to have armor that fits the official crls, the lack of a forum will make this hard. Now I understand that there are liability issues to allowing children to use forums, but perhaps you can have a different forum for each age group? For the youngest two groups have it such that parents have to post. But for the oldest since they're over 13 they should be able to post without liability issues?

I just don't really see the point if there is no way for the kids to discuss their costumes and have their quality improve.

This isn't a bad idea in my mind. The 13+ open forum would just have to be limited to armor threads and maybe challenge reports.
Just a soon-to-be Mythosaur adding my 2 cents to the conversation.

Post by: Saz on Mar 10, 2013, 05:16 AM
The idea of having a forum for under 13s would be a problem, not only socially, I can already see the people who dislike us commenting that the Mercs have opened a forum for kids to be groomed all over their facebooks and back room emails, but we'd have to screen the members with highly expensive methods to attempt to ensure the virtual safety of the kids, as well as the very real cost of setting up a server and maintaining it. Remember, even though the Mercs is funding it, we as a group will have little participation in it.

Or we could not have a forum.

Saz does have a point. Another alternative would to have a thread or section or something and the training sgts as mods (like the clan boards)... But if the MMCC isn't gonna have much to do with it this isn't the best idea.

If they are over 13, they can just continue using these forums without any liability issues.

We're going to look at some alternatives to using the Mercs forum as a direct line of communication in the Corps.  Mostly because of information privacy laws, and it's always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to legalities.

Oya! My son could be a Strill, he's been going crazy since I got here with hopes that he could join once I reach OM status. Now he will have the opportunity to get a head start.

I had a though on communications: since there are Sgts. in charge of the 3 levels, could a Facebook page be set up for the young warriors to communicate? I am not sure as to what "legalities" are, but I think it wouldn't hurt looking into it. The Sgts. could monitor/restrict the site to prevent unwanted issues. Just some thoughts.

Legally, Facebook has the same restrictions as forums.  Facebook rules say you must be 13+ to join.

Back on to the topic of costumes, I have one more question.  I know store-bought costumes are acceptable, but how about modified ones?  For example, if I bought a Pre Viszla, painted it to match my custom Mando, added some bits, so on, would there be separate requirements for quality of the conversion or would that just fall under "store-bought and approved".

My understanding is that as long as it looks Mandalorian, it will be allowed regardless of origin or quality. It's more about the mentality and the group than it is about a costume. :)

So the Verd'ika Corps is pretty much Galactic Academy for Mandos? I think it's a good idea for verd'ikas to feel recognized  :)

Sort-of, but Verd'ika Corps is quite different in one respect.  Challenges!

The best way to describe the challenge system is to think about it like your own personal video game.  Each year the Training Sergeants will issues 9 total challenges per Battalion.  Recruits will need to complete a minimum of 3 to qualify for their annual challenge patch.  When you complete 1 challenge in each category (Craftsmanship, Community, Invasion) you'll receive a badge on your membership profile (visual database of all Corps recruits).  As you complete more challenges in a category, your "skill level" will go up and a new badge will be awarded.  You'll be able to earn 3 levels in each category (Novice, Journeyman, Expert).

As long as you complete your minimum 3 challenges per year (Novice) then you'll earn your annual challenge patch.  You can collect a patch for each year, and as you change Battalions the patch will change also.  Think of the challenge patch as a merit badge.  :)

Yes, they won't be the same challenge every year.  Some challenges may come back around over the years or between Battalions, but you also have to remember that as you rise through the Battalions, the challenges will get harder.  Mythosaur Battalion will always have the most difficult challenges, because that group is preparing to become Official Members.

Also, Mandalorians don't do "lists".   ;)

To give a little more insight in regards to the Challenges myself and the other Training Sergeants will strive to keep it interesting and worth the effort., our goal is to make the challenegs more than just an achievment but a part of your transition into becoming a full Mandalorian Mercs as well as have some fun along the way. I look forward to working with all of you and getting to know you more as well as I'd like to read up your RP might I have some of the  threads so I can enjoy your stories as well, who knows maybe a challenege or two may derive form it  ;)

And I'll second Ulrik's idea, I'd love to read your RP threads. :)

I saw the announcement on FB that said only 5 days till the Corps comes out, so I came here to check one last thing.

What is the minimum amount of armor required to be considered a "Mandalorian costume"? I fully realize that it doesn't really matter on quality, but what if someone were to have, say, just a helmet? Would they be admitted into the Corps?

The minimum requirement would be something like this:

Which is the Party City child's Pre Vizsla costume ($25.00).  Just a helmet probably isn't going to fly, it needs to be at-minimum a Halloween costume.

This is an entirely separate club. While it's being hosted/run by members of the Mercs, there is no link between membership/staff between the two other than some people are involved with both.

If you want to be a member, have your parent fill out an application and send it in when the site goes live. There is no link or approval from Alor'ads or anything. It's a wholly separate club/entity.

Should be more or less fully live now. If you spot any obvious bugs, let me know so I can fix them. We're on a 'release quick and often' kind of schedule with this, so keep your eyes out for new features.

Okay, here's a question regarding trooping...

Will Corps members with good looking kits (not store-bought foam Boba Fett suits) be able to troop the Star Wars Weekends at Disney?

I was under the impression, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Disney only asks select members of the 501st to troop for the SW Weekends parades.  They have to go through a checkup of their armor to make sure it's up to standards before being allowed and only a certain number of troopers are allowed.  I didn't think Mercs had ever been allowed to troop these parades and no one is allowed to enter the park in costumes or with helmets/masks covering their faces.

Tag is correct.

We've been trying to work out way into the SWW parade, but unfortunately haven't had much luck.

So the continued answer is "No, we are not yet part of the SWW line-up."  If that ever changes, we will make everyone aware and will do what we can to include as many as possible.

I actually wasn't asking about marching in the parade... Guess I should've worded that differently.
What I'm really asking is, as a Verd'ika Corps members, can I wear my armor to SW Weekends?

Tag, they'll let you wear costumes, you just can't have a helmet on the entire time. If someone asks for a picture, or if you want to have a picture made with the costumed Disney employees, or any of the actors it's fine to put a helmet or mask on for a couple of minutes.

If this is Disney's policy for park patrons, then I would consider it unchanged for anyone in Mercs or Verd'ika Corps.

The official Disney Parks policy on costumes is that no one over the age of ten may wear a costume in any of their parks unless it is Halloween and they are attending Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.

Unfortunately, the Disney website isn't exactly functioning at the moment, so I can't give you a link.  However, there are more park fan sites out there than I can count, and if you Google the Disney Parks dress code, you'll find it pretty quick.  If you are over the age of 10, and you're in a costume that looks like a costume, they will deny you entry to the parks.

Here is a website that has the dress code (since Disney is down): http://www.wdwinfo.com/tips_for_touring/dress-code.htm

And here is an article about a girl who tested it: http://www.examiner.com/article/walt-disney-world-stops-teen-from-entering-park-due-to-dress-code-rules

Hope that clears it up for you.

During SWW(because its a Special Event) EVEN adults can dress up, No mask though, face paint ok, per the Community of Disney Park Lovers, per Disney. MMCC Members of course are still prohibited per our rules and we have helmets.

Verd'ika Corps question? - Can a Verd'ika here in Florida have a Buurenaar Verda Clan symbol on their armor?

That's something the local Alor'ad would need to give approval for.  Verd'ika Coprs is a separate entity from MMCC, but the Clan Leaders have the power to chose what amount of interaction the local Clans have with the Corps.

So has Manbrolorian been given the ok by Verdika Corps to troop Star Wars Weekends? That is the impression he has. I do not support that at all. If Official Mandalorian Mercs cannot troop this event than Verdika corps members absolutely should not be allowed to or encouraged to either.
Title: Re: Verd'ika Corps - NOW LIVE!
Post by: Saz on May 13, 2013, 08:08 AM
I'll chime in on this.

Firstly, as far as I am concerned, only Official Members of the MMCC should be attending Official events (Those are the ones where the clan is invited by another costume group, or a company to promote a day, event or convention).

With unofficial events (where anyone can turn up in costume), where we allow non members to test their armour out, I believe that it will be up to the command staff whether they allow Verdika Kids to be with the Mercs.

We all feel it important that clan command has a say in all of this and we trust that they will make the right decision based on circumstances presented.

The Council are getting together to form a guidance post for Clan command, we'll get it sorted asap.

I was going to say that it sounds more like a Con type of deal here vs a troope setup by the club.  We can't really tell anyone no, if it's open to anyone.  Pretty much what Saz said... 8)

So has Manbrolorian been given the ok by Verdika Corps to troop Star Wars Weekends?

No he hasn't.   If he wants to attend SWW as a park patron, then that's his or his parent's choice.  However, he won't be trooping it representing the Verd'ika Corps.  MMCC has maintained an official stance of "No trooping at SWW until invited by Disney", and that extends to ALL branches, units, and sub-groups within the MMCC.  While VC has a separate organizational structure, it is still technically a sub-group of the MMCC.

Attending a public event isn't necessarily the same thing as an official troop.  You do have the ability to go to a public event as "yourself", and not as a representative of the MMCC.  Submitting invasion reports or publicly telling event patrons what group your a member of would then make you a representative of the group.

Tom beat me to it, but it has always been understood that representing the MMCC at SWW is off-limits to any MMCC member, official or non, until such time as we are officially invited to attend in that capacity.

PR is working on a short guide for Clan/Squad leaders as to what they should and shouldn't be allowing in participation with Verd'ika Corps.  For the most part, the bulk of participation power lies with the Clan/Squad leader.  However, for official events it's going to be stressed that Verd'ika Corps not be invited to participate unless they are also "Verd'ika Members" of the MMCC.  Public events are an entirely different scenario however.

I realize that's probably not what some people want to hear, but the reality is that Verd'ika Corps must run on different rules than the MMCC for the legal protection of the parent organization (MMCC).

This will come very shortly as we are all working on it to make sure the outline is very clear on what can be done.

I do know this is going to be a work in progress and at some times challenging for Clan's but we do hope that we can get this ironed out in a timely fashion.

Sorry to resurrect an old topic, but is this still a functioning thing? I sent my daughter's info/picture on 9/26 and never heard anything back. I've tried to email twice since then and the emails are bouncing back.

I noticed the FB page got REALLY quiet, too.

Any information would be helpful, I have an almost 9-year-old mini who is anxious to be 'official'

Thanks

Hello everyone, I just turned 17 this November and I just found out last night that I could join the verd'ika corps.
I sent my application in and I'm waiting for the approval, I can't wait to meet all you mythosaurs! I've got a kit put together but I'm trying to improve the quality of it before I turn 18 and apply for an OM, but I've got until November 2016 to finish that up. So until then I hope to learn a lot about being a part of the mercs in general!
