Title: The Tough Mudder -mando up
Post by: darthmayhem on May 15, 2013, 11:08 AM
so it has come to my attention that the wounded warrior project doesnt accept charity money from just anyone... however the tough mudder is a funder for them. now several in Taakure Clan plan on undertaking this challenge sometime next year. and we want to officially invite any and all mercs to undertake this challenge with us (either at the same event as us, or across the us.)

we will take before and after pictures, and are openely challenging any mercs to undertake it with us. This charity also hits home for me, as i am a veteran and fully support what these people do. and who knows if we get enough interest in this perhaps we will do a challenge coin run for all those that partake in the event.

so lets get us a roster going people :)

IF YOUR TEAM INCLUDES (lets try to keep the alorads in charge of the teams here people)

6 to 10 members, you each get a $5 refund!
11 to 20 members, you each get a $10 refund!
21+ members, you each get a $15 refund!

(looking at starting this event next year, giving everyone enough prep time and swag to be made and groups to be formed.)

I'm doing it in October in Aus, dressed as Deadpool ;) That's the plan anyway. There's a few folks down under who have been supporting Wounded Warrior with this for at least a year now.

A heads up,  Mercs will be instituting a Forum award for this, and other similar events. Criteria (at present) will be:

OM's only
Must complete event wearing Mercs shirt (or Clan shirt) Or full kit for you crazy crazy folks (MAV!)
Must have photo evidence of event completion, in said shirt
The event itself must sponsor a charity. IE, Tough Mudder donates to Legacy, whereas a lot of (generally easier) fun run style events require you to do your own fundraising for the cause they're supporting. Other eligible events could potentially include Warrior Dash, Spartan Race, that kind of thing.

We're working out a name for the award, I'd appreciate it if you could PM me suggestions, and any further brainstorming about criteria of events and eligibility.

Wish I was OM. I'd defiantly do it. Possibly full kit, minus weapons, maybe I'd take them if aloud.  ;D Or maybe as a Clone Commando. Maybe in a few years, once I get OM.

Keep in mind safety if you're doing it in kit. You're gonna have to be SUPER fit to start with, and then you gotta worry about restricted movement, things catching on things, being submerged in ice water while wearing a helmet, breakages, things falling off, losing boots in mud... list goes on.

You'll be badass sure but you might not be smart.

It's recommended to do events like this dressed in the bare minimum. Shorts shirt and shoes basically.

Wish they had this event closer to where I'm at in Canada...
They host all of four, two way out west and two way out east. Oh wait, there's also nothing much in central US either.

Anyone happen to know of one that takes place around the same time as a convention?

Found out there's a Warrior Dash (http://www.warriordash.com) down near Minneapolis on Sept 7th...
Might be able to swing it.
Warrior Dash supports the St Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

Point, these and other similar events all count, yes?

I was already planning on running this year, and if I don't have my kit finished by then, well then I just fail at life. Thaxos, the Wisconsintough mudder is the weekend of september 7th, I know it's a couple weeks after wizard world, but it's probably the closest for you.

THIS IS 100% WRONG. tough mudder does not donate to WWP!!!! I have been saying this for years, on there site if you read the fine print its says those who raise money for WWP will get a discount on their race ticket. NONE of the proceeds from a regular entry go into WWP. I MEAN NONE!!!! This is a touchy subject for me, cause I ran a tough mudder with a large group of people and the tickets were around $150 and to find out non of it went to WWP. Not to mention the race was crowded (I had to wait 45mins at one obstacle) and they don't time you. When you look at it's one huge money trap!

It seems that you raise money for WWP outside of the event and then run the event.  It's like when people do 5K's for cancer or something of that sort.  Its like any other event.  The entry that you pay is for the setup and venue along with anything that you might get to commemorate your run.  The WWP donations is what the runners get friends and family to donate to show support for your run and that is donated.
Title: Re: The Tough Mudder -mando up
Post by: jirt on Dec 04, 2013, 07:48 AM
its still the fact the advertise it as if a portion of your entry fee goes toward WWP. Which is not the case, plus the race is around 175 to run so your telling me they cant donate 5% of that entry for WWP. Lets do some math really quick the race I ran had an easy 5000 people, so they collected around 875000 dollors, that's just the entry fees!!! 5% of that is 43750, well over the average year pay of a military member. It's a greed thing I have a problem with they try to sway you with illusion of mass donation to the WWP; when in truth your entry fee is lining the pockets of someone else.

And as far as the race it self goes. The course its self is extremely easy (if you are a runner), I worked out after the race. I waited for 45 minutes at an obstacle because they allow people to try again and again to complete it, unlike a Spartan race where if you fail you pay with a 30 burpee penalty. AND they don't time your race, (they say its not a race its a challenge) I call it too lazy for shoe trackers. Tough mudder left with a bad taste in my mouth. I have ran multiple obstacle course races TM, warrior dash, Spartan races, zombie runs you name it I've ran it probably. My favorite by far is the Blue mountain Spartan race, its only 4 miles but its the hardest race I've ever ran. Heed my words people!

Honestly, I'm not a runner. I don't like it, never have. When I played sports I ran.because I had to.   An easier race isn't terrible. I just wanted to do something like this with my clan and fellow mandos and maybe raise some money for charity.

Remember not everyone is as fit as you, and some people find this hard.

Same here. I'm a huge promoter of personnel fitness. Its just I see people spend a lot of money on these races and I don't want them to be take advantage of.

well i thank the input for informing everyone of this, it was an oversight on my part then and no harm no foul. certainly we will have memebrs that partake in many forms of these races. and it will be a great bonding event while performing some good.
