Title: Khofax WiP (winter)
Post by: Khofax on Jan 23, 2014, 01:16 PM
Hi gang,
Here is the start of my kit. I cut some pieces out of foam to check size. I used the large template to start. Should i drop down to the next size or does this work. What do the pros think ?
that is my tshirt hanging out the bottom not my gut lol.

thanks for the input.

Looks big to me, but it also looks like you didn't tape it all the way on. Remember to tape down the contours, so we can get an idea of how the plates would lay against you after shaping. :)

Ill try the next size down and tape it down properly and see how it looks. Thanks

I would say shave about 1/2 inch down on all sides of the chest and stomach plates and keep the collar where its at.

Yep. Basically, trim the chest to line up with the collar and trim the gut plate to line up with the chest (after it's trimmed of course).

Everyone's got you covered as far as the plate comments go :)

Make sure they are fully taped down and evenly spaced a thumbs with.

I will. I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. So happy that everyone is here to help point me in the right direction.

Here is a paper version. I trimmed off a half inch on the chest and belly plate. I also put some tape to hold the sides down to see what the plates look like contoured to me. The spacing is about a half inch but ill adjust it more with the real plates. I put a little white square where my bellybutton is as a reference.

I would take a half inch off the outside of the plates, spacing is good  ;)

hmmmm i dont think size is too bad  maybe 1/4 inch off the collar and chest plates ;)

I agree with Kyp, about half an inch of the chest plates on the outside.
Title: Re: Khofax WiP
Post by: Khofax on Jan 26, 2014, 04:01 PM
Here is another try. I went down to the medium template for size to see how it would fit. I think this fits better. I like the coverage that it gives me. The chest plates are a little crooked but when i line them up right they should line up with the belly plate. My belly button is about an inch below the bottom of the belly plate.

Look better or back to the drawing board ?

thanks again.

Make sure the outside chest plates match up to the bottom corners of the collar and always triple check the spacing. To me it appears the diamond is crooked and stomach isn't equally spaced between the two chest plates.

This looks perfect!
Don't worry about crooked pieces at this point... After all they're just held with some masking tape...

Here is an update. I took a pic of me head to toe with most pieces on. I still need to my make bracers, knees and put the shoulder bells on. I need to adjust the spacing but ill do that later.

ya . it was tough to get the spacing with the tape but it will be fixed when i finish my vest. As for the knees, i'm working on those, the back plate and shoulders next.  thanks for the input.

Man. It's been a while but i've been going crazy to try and get my kit to a point where i could wear it to Ottawa Comicon. There is stuff I need to fix, add and rework. Wearing it for a few days made some things come to light that I need to take care of. I had the chance to pose and interact with other mercs. it was a great weekend. Now time to get back to work. Here is a pic of my kit and me posing with others.

Okay, so, a handful of recommendations...

All in all, the sizing is solid.  Your shoulder bells look a little low; you might want to hike them up an inch or two.  You've got some minor floating with your thighs, but that's not an unusual problem to have.  Adjust the strapping/shaping when you get a chance.

The thing that's really grabbing my attention is your weathering.  It's uniform and splotchy; it looks more like an intentional pattern (cheetah spots?) than weathering.  It needs to be more random, more natural-looking, more concentrated in heavy-wear areas and rubbed edges, not to mention blast/ saber/ vibroblade damage points.  I'm not going to tell you you need to repaint your kit to get approved, but I'm definitely going to recommend it.  If it's any consolation, both of my kits had to take a few paint jobs/ repaints to get it right.  It's part of the learning process.

I am not one of much knowledge like most on here, but the thigh plates almost look a tad big. But like Cin said, might just be floating.

Post by: Khofax on May 12, 2014, 06:12 AM
Thanks for the input guys. I need to make a new vest so the shoulder bells will be raised and i need to get another strap on my thigh plates. They are both on my to do lists. As for the weathering i never really noticed what i had done with the weathering until i had the whole kit on. I will be making some new parts as I wasn't happy with the shape or i want to re-design them. Ill be adjusting the paint and weathering at some point. I'm still undecided if i want to make my thigh plates smaller. I like the full coverage it gives me. I was able to learn a tone just by wearing my kit 1.0. The fit, mounting the plates, size and all that. I'm starting on making adjustments and will use all the feed back as much as i can.

Hello everyone, i've been a little busy but talking with fellow Ottawa Mercs and others here in the forums i've started working on updating my kit a bit. So I now have some pouches and I have my vest and belt on the way. Trying to track down a tan flight suit, should have it soon.

I decided to repaint my kit to improve on my weathering. Here is a pic of the new test weathering. I think it's way better than what i had before.

(http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/xx102/aburelle/testpaint_zpsa1bb4bf4.jpg) (http://s746.photobucket.com/user/aburelle/media/testpaint_zpsa1bb4bf4.jpg.html)

what do you think ?
Title: Re: Khofax WiP (New test paint)
Post by: Jaing Vau on Jul 17, 2014, 11:28 PM
It looks alot better then before ner vod! Did you just sand back the paint layers for that affect? For my plates I used a multitude of implements. From toothpaste, to sanding, to wire brush then blackwash and some black spray paint to get all my effects.
You can almost see every example on this little bit of cod plate  ;D
(http://i.imgur.com/eEz6aTj.png)

I love the wear affects yours has though.. Making me think of a repaint. Especially those edges. So worn out.. So cool  8)

Hi Jaing Vau, Ya all i did this time is sand back the paint layers. I will be using toothpaste on a few of the other parts and i may do a wash over the entire kit to make it a little more on the dirty side.

Post by: Jaing Vau on Jul 18, 2014, 07:51 AM
Awesome! ;D I never sanded back all my paint layers because I felt I'd go all the way through

This way you've done now flows a lot better and looks great. Ever improving man!
Title: Re: Khofax WiP (New test paint)
Post by: Khofax on Jul 18, 2014, 08:18 AM
Thanks. The only thing i will change when i do my actual plates is to make the silver coat of pain a little thicker that way i won't be afraid to sand it a little. I think i'll do 1 coat of primer, 2 coats of silver, 1 coat of the beaten copper and 1 coat of red. It should be safe to sand. I'll also use the toothpaste method in a few spots where the more damaged areas are.
Title: Re: Khofax WiP (New test paint)
Post by: Carid Vhett on Jul 18, 2014, 09:24 AM
I did a similar thing. Four coats of silver for the main silver parts. Or two silver two red for the red parts then sand some back. Then a black brown wash to add depth.

Hi Gang, here is the weathering I have done so far. I still need to give it a brown wash. It needs to have a little more dirt to it. How is acrylic paint to work with for giving it a wash ? I still have room for improvement with my technique but over all I like the look.

Update time. So the plates have been attached to my flak vest. I need to get a new belt to hold the leather pouches a little higher because as it is I find them to low but there are no belt hoops to help hold the belt up and the pouches are heavy enough to pull the belt down.  Input is always welcome.

Much better than V1!! Loving it! For the pouches you could always sew in velcro around where the belt would be to act almost as loops to hold it all up. Not too sure how well this would work but its the first thing that came to mind haha.

At least your flightsuit will look decently weathered. I went black and its going to be a pain to dirty up. I'm liking the tan, very multi-environmental  8)

I went with the Tan because the main color of my plates are oiled bronze in color. I had black the first time around and wasn't 100% happy with it, I  like tan is way better.

That is a good idea. I will look into leather as an upgrade. I'm not sure on where I can get that around here but i'm going to start looking. That way I wont need to try and match the belts to the flight suit. I know i'll be weathering the strapping so they won't look so clean  ;D

You could always buy a bunch of belts and strap them that way. GT had some decent $5 leather ones in a bin a while back. Not sure if they're still doing it though.

Cool to see all your gear suited up. I agree that the white stands out. Maybe you could do a brown wash or something to make it match more with the jumpsuit color.

I need your opinion gang. The belts that I have now are too bright. I did a test with three variations of color.

A. Has the 2 colors layered on it.
B. Has Raw Sienna
C. Has Burnt Umber

I find B is to orange. Now i'm not sure if I should go with A. or C.

What do you think.

C it is.  After having the kit on again yesterday, I've decided that i don't like the way the thigh plates fit. I think I'll need to reshape them. I am debating on leaving the thigh and shin armor off until I can get it sorted. I'm happy with everything else just need to adjust the kit a bit. I eventually want to go Heavy Weapons so I have other mods in mind as far as armor go. I'll post pics without the plates in a bit.

It's been a while but I'm still here. Winter is in full swing up here in Canada and with no Garage to work in it's hard to work on my kit. Need to get back to work soon, almost time for Star Wars Celebration.

I know that feeling vod, working out of an apartment myself up the valley. Looking good so far! Is Ottawa having its own celebration, or are you talking about the big one in the States?
