Title: Open Seasons: Montross "The Brutal" **Merc Approved**
Post by: tubachris85x on Mar 25, 2014, 11:52 AM
Originally intended to be a "surprise" costume for MegaCon 2014. Due to a mishap with USPS, I was not able to finish on time. Since Star Wars Weekends this year (or the foreseeable future) will not allow much EU to march, I have no real "big" event to debut, therefore I am now disclosing this project openly.

I started early October/November 2013. This is based on the Open Season comic style. There was much analysis involved into making decisions to transition from comic to real world. The 501st regs state that artistic EU must translate into their movie counterparts, however, while the majority of the pieces of the suit (the actual chest armor, jetpack, boots) are based 100% on the movie designs (with the exception of the paint job), the only issue was the helmet, as the comic style is clearly much different. This was cleared up by the former LMO stating that should I stick to my build plan as outlined, I should not have issues getting 501st approved for this character. This has also been evaluated for Mando Merc approval as well.

I have every piece on order that I cannot do myself, such as a cold-cast Jetpack kit from NME Props, custom flak vest from Denise Ladyghost Cowles, the custom blaster was built by none-other than Chuck Bowman.
The Jetpack harness was created by BiggerKidBiggerToys (BKBT- Vince)
WizardOfFlight (Alan) created custom sized Jango fett armor templates as well to help me with the build. The helmet is a cold cast BKBT/Cruzer Jango kit. Will be using my Kenneth Coles for the boots.

The flight suit is still being put together as well. The last few things I need to worry about is finishing the chest armor (molding and cold-casting), adding the skull/belt buckle to the leathers, and creating the cape.

Everything after that is strictly painting and assembly. Since I am no longer on a time crunch, I wish to get this done somewhere before July if possible. Still gonna be lax on posting for this though, but I don't want to wait a year to debut this suit!

I won't post all of my WIP pics but I'll post the hightlights that I have taken over the course of the build as of now.

First and foremost, this image right here is telling as to why I chose to do this. Montross is a large man, much like myself. Those who know me can tell you that being at 6'7" and 340lbs is quite large. Granted, I am needing to drop fat.

So, I've gotten back into it. I've gotten a new jumpsuit and got to work on my jetpack this week.

The items I have:

- Helmet BKBT/Cruzer CC w/ my own sculpted ear caps - 100% - Gonna replace the servo set up

- Blaster - Woodchuck - 90% - Just needs highlights and weathering

- Armor - Based off movie style Jango, just scaled to me curtsey of WizardofFlight-  60% - need to finish making the masters, then mold/ cold-cast them

- Flak vest(s) - 1 from IndyMagnoli and 1 from Ladyghost. The one from Denise is the proper color I need but needs to be re-adjusted for a "tighter" fit since losing weight. Indymagnoli fits well, but wrong color. May sell or get tanned if possible -Still needing to be altered. One person backed out

- Boots - Ordered rigger Boots from the UK

- Jetpack - Cold cast by NME props - Just Need to finish weathering and add buckles to wear it

- Jetpack harness - 2nd prototype from BKBT directly, custom size

- Leathers - made by Delta - complete for the most part, but need to make custom buckle and "skull" detail

- Flight-suit - Getting a different set of coveralls

- Forearm sleeves - Going to re-do these

Pics from the build up so far, won't post everything though since I'm further along

Very interesting and impressive! That's quite the parts list for this build

We've seen a lot of people saying they're going to make this costume, but no one has ever gotten this far.

Thank you!

So I've read. I've already invested way too much money to back out of it. Not to mention with the exception of the armor, I have paid for all the other pieces. It's just a matter of getting it all together once they're completed.

lol I haven't gotten that far yet, but from my "placement" it looks about right. Adding the proper curves into it really helps too. I need to lose body fat, but between the jetpack harness acting like a damn corset, then the leather belt, it'll lay pretty well on me. Alan did a really good job, since he scaled the armor to my measurements and overall size

You've put together a great parts list.  Don't know which I like better, the helmet, the custom blaster, or the coldcast jetpack.  Definitely will be watching your build man  8)

I appreciate it! Wasn't cheap to do so far, but I don't think I'll ever do a Jango or Boba because of my size, and while I do like the customs out here, it's something I've never really considered, so Montross is the character for me I think

Go on!  I want to see this build! :D

Was gonna post some other pics, but realized they're on my other laptop, which has more pics there, so when I get the time I'll snag some from.

In the mean time, I have begun a very drastic change in "lifestyle," cause if I call it a "diet," my nutritionist will try to snap my neck. Anyways, what this means is that so long as I stick to it for the foreseeable future, I will be losing a good amount of body fat. I already started monday and I already lost some measurements on my waist, noticably that my clothes I wore just last weekend, feel significantly looser today.

This may cause an issue for the soft parts I am still waiting for, so we will see, worst case, I can get a tailor to modify them for me.

That is BOSS  8)

If I can ask, how did you do the weathering on the helmet?  is it just the black-wash technique applied to get those "lines" of grime?  cause it looks on point with the comic book art.

Thanks! I'm glad you agree that it does, as it was a new technique that I was experimenting with. It was a mix of black and brown acrylic paints. I used more brown then black when doing the mixing as it's more in line with the needed look. How I applied it, as intended to look "wet/muddy" was take a glob of the paint mix, place it in one spot, then using either a moist (not soaking wet) OR  a dry paper towel, I began pushing the paint outwards in different directions. Doing this created the "lines" which in turn give it the appearance of running water or wet dirt that you would see in more natural conditions.

Hey buddy, loving your build, I to am about to start a montross build.  What did you decide on with ref to his shoulders, it looks to me like he is not wearing any shoulder armour

Also are you going to go pistol less, again it looks like in the open season comic he only uses his rifle ?

Any advice greatly appreciated brother :)

The eternal, ongoing debate between whether Montross has "soft shoulders" (padded but not plated bells) or traditional bells came up a while ago.  Per the CRLs, go ahead and pad the bell extensions, but add the bells anyway.  At the very least, if you do end up needing them, you'll just look like you have bigger arms.

Hey guys,

Eagerly, I actually just responded to your thread over on TDH!

I appreciate your comments.

- First, regarding the shoulder bells - My analysis reflects that yes, he does have shoulder bells AT ONE POINT DURING THE BATTLE. In one frame, he clearly has shoulder bells, then in the context of the sequence, he takes a grenade blast, and the next frame of him on the ground recovering from the said blast, he no longer has them. To me, this logically would tell me that the bells were "blown off." So ideally, since he has them for the battle sequence and the fact that the Hasbro figure does as well, would in my mind, make the shoulder bells optional, since he's still seen not wearing them in prior pages, so to have them or not, would be a personal preference.

- Pistols; I am planning to have these made eventually, when I have some more time and money to spend for them, but my stance is that it's not entirely Open Seasons cannon, so if you're shooting for 501st approval, I do not think it will hold up as a requirement. However, the pistols w/ holsters would be an ADDITIONAL item to add. It's clear in the Open Seasons artwork that he still has the holster straps hanging off of his belt, so it wouldn't be entirely ruled out that he doesn't have them as we see with the Hasbro figure

If you're building this costume with us at the Mercs with hopes of approval, you'll most likely have to wear the bells, due to CRL issues, is what I was thinking.

I've been discussing this with the local clan leader, Joe Knowlton. I passed along the same information regarding my build to which he discussed with the higher ups and it was relayed back to me that it would be Mercs approved. There are other conflicts with Montross and the existing Merc requirements which would have to be an exception to policy since he's a distinctive face character VS a custom-based character.

Who is this Joe Knowlton you speak of  :P . Montross like Sabine will have unique CRLs. Since nobody has ever finished a Montross the team hasn't put forth a crl for it. Whichever of you Montross's finish first might have the privilege of being the person who helps do that.

When I spoke to one of the app team members awhile back I believe I discussed the soft knees with them. I can't remember if the shoulders were discussed or not. Hopefully one of the team members will weigh in on this thread.

I imagine that the shoulders would have to be considered optional wear, at least that would make sense in my mind.

Today I received my first of two flak vests, this one being from Ladyghost. I can't stress how high quality and professional this is, down to the piping and the liner. It's beyond exceptional.

As predicted though, my weight loss shows. The measurements I gave initially for this were much larger, and now, while it "fits" me, it's doesn't have that "snug" look I need. Aside from having the mid-section reduced, the shoulders will need to be cut down as they are covering most of my shoulders, which need to be exposed.

Forgive it's rough appearance so far, but I dressed myself up to this point, so I know for future reference I need someone there to help when I put my belt on and such. The rear is not pulled down tight and it appears un-even and un-centered with the JP harness straps. I'm going to also have to play around with the harness. It's adjustable fortunately but I'll have to make it such that it works well with the vest as to not cause distortions.

So, looking at this, it tells me I need to hold off for awhile before I can really move forward on making the necessary adjustments if I don't want to keep spending money. The belt I can finish up, but I'll have to add more velcro to it as parts of it need to be more stable and overall tightened up, again, due to weight loss.

All in all, I'd rather have this current dillema where I can cut VS being too fat and having to start completely over!

And I didn't have padding in the helmet, so yea, looks weird...

Well, I received the fight suit today. Needless to say, I'm not too happy. The quality is there and it's really well done, but the things I asked for were not done right.

Here's the list of things wrong:

- Color; I requested a dark/navy blue color and gave him a color code as he requested. This is a light/almost baby blue color

- Stitching on the legs; I asked that there be stitched lines to make it appear like Vader's body suit, and to extend to mid-torso and go around the legs. The stitching is more like minimal pleats, they fall way short below the crotch line and they're only on the front, not on the back.

- Knees; they offered to make the knee portion and to add padding internally to get that look, to which they asked for measurements. Well, they added a piece of fabric in the shape of it, but that's it. No padding added, so it doesn't serve much purpose now.

So yea, I really need to find a professional seamstress locally. I might be able to fix these issues, but it's going to be a lot of work. I'd have to dye the entire thing to get it the right color, then find a seamstress who can re-tailor the suit for my body, undo and then do the stitching on the legs properly (remove the knee patches).

One more thing to do...

Sorry about the flight suit. Seems like it just didn't pan out the way you hoped. Communication is often hard if you are not in person to hammer out the details. Hopefully you aren't discouraged Vod.

:( I'm so sorry that piece didn't come out as you'd requested it. Hopefully they'll offer you some kind of return or re-work, but if they don't, I hope they step on all the Legos.

Just ooc, looking at the Vader bodysuit, the stitching goes into what looks to be quilted fabric. To get that look on a single piece, they would've had to turn the edge of those tiny pleats in towards your skin, and then done the stitching on the inside of the suit. If you turn the leg inside out, is that the correct/closer to the "look" you wanted?
I'd offer to help re-work it, but I don't think I'm anywhere close to you =\

There's no excuse about saying an extra layer of fabric is "padding" on the knees though. That's completely nuts.

I hope this is the only serious setback you wind up with, because this build rocks and we're all cheering you on!!

I haven't message the guy yet about the issues. I went back to our emails to make sure I wasn't completely wrong before addressing it. The things I mentioned such as the legs and the color are there just like I had explained. The knees I may have misunderstood exactly what he implied.

Either way, I can still use this assuming I can find a seamstress who can. The only other option really is for me to sell this to someone (if I can at all) and go another route with it.

I'm down 20lbs now from about 3 weeks ago and I've got plenty more to lose so I have time before I get to this again. Plus, I will not work on any personal projects until I finish my commission obligations.

Blah...glad to have access again here...weird how I keep having issues w/ accounts...

Anyways...

I'm slowly getting back into this. First thing I did the other day was order a new base for my flight suit, i.e., dickies coveralls. Hopefully it will fit, so we'll see. I'm going to have to have it modified and done correctly...

I'm hoping to get to the jet pack soon as well, along with the armor..

Alright, got the dickies coveralls in.

It's still too light in color, but not too worry. I want to add the details/modify it before I go about darkening it up with some dye. Fits really well too!

Might be getting a back plate now. While I know it's not going to be seen very much, I'm going to have it as *security* for approval purposes. Idk, we'll see....

Might also have a neat addition to my helmet too :)

Started to work on the Jetpack yesterday. Hadn't decided on a whole lot of how I wanted to go about tackling it but I can say it's not really that difficult now. The guys at NME send this kit out really nice and clean. No clean up required at all which saves a lot of time. The most challenging thing honestly is getting the rocket mounted, which was something I wasn't too sure of, but a fellow prop builder gave a good idea. I'll cover that as I get to it. Essentially, I don't want to use adhesives when i don't need to, specifically for this build. As I did for my helmet's ear caps and visor, mounting them with bolts is a clean method and I don't have to stress about the (Florida) heat getting to it. Plus, I like to be able to remove pieces if I need to and not have to flight or risk breaking pieces in the process if I can help it.

So, the kit as it comes, the thrusters, top and bottom "cone" caps, rocket and a few other greeblies are all separate. The thrusters and caps will be held together with bolts w/ wing nuts.

I first cut the "panel" out of the back per the lines. I decided to cut the whole thing out for the biggest reason being that I can effectively reach into the corner areas (thrusters/cones) despite my large hands. I'm debating if I really want to convert the cut out panel into an actual "door" though as when I'll be wearing this (with the cape especially) you won't be able to see it at all.

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/p600x600/1620527_10203473710099249_2582073409142378957_n.jpg?oh=b833d4bc318f89af059f413b46a14304&oe=54C83F52&__gda__=1421241962_97520889927c0fd0e783e8ea80628871)

Should have taken this pic a little later as I finished this later on after taking it, but I started with the lower cone-caps which are now done and holding onto the pack quite well. You'll see the bottom vent is in place (not permanent yet) as I cut a hole into the jetpack body.

(https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/p600x600/1477641_10203475239337479_1832458057842288123_n.jpg?oh=3bf978ab9e03ec542884d4aa790ae017&oe=54CD837D)

This will be a rather quick build. I can get it done by the weekend.

Getting there. All the cap-pieces are secured, the thruster nozzles are as well. Just the rocket really, then the greeblies are left.

You'll want that panel removed on troops anyway. Airflow is always a good thing... especially in Florida humidity, blahhh!

Are your nozzles removable? I know a lot of Mercs opt to have them removable for transportation and breakage concerns.  Also a bolt on the bottom of the rocket and a wingnut from the inside of the main body is a good non-adhesive way of attaching the rocket - which is also easily removable for transportation.   It's a great looking jetpack, and one to be very proud of!

Yes, the nozzles are removable. All the add-ons are held on with bolts. I think the only piece that I won't be using a bolt for is the stabilizer greeblie just due to it's small size, I don't want to risk damaging it.

As for the rocket, yeah that would be along the lines of what I'd like to do, but the issue is that the thing is completely hollow and I really don't want to try and fill the entire thing. It was recommended to attach a bungie cord to the rocket and a hook on the inside of the main body as an alternative. It'll do the job and be easy to remove when needed

Ok, the jetpack is technically finished being painted. Not really much for this. The paint scheme is based off of the hasbro figure, which is really the only source of reference for this, so can't really argue there.

So yea, following the figure, it uses the same blue as the helmet, so I used again for this (the same color for jango) Testor's French Blue. Came out really nice I think. Just gotta finish assembling the rest of the pieces, then I can weather it. I'm thinking I'm going to go really dirty with the weathering though....

Looking great! The dirtier the better! The scenes in Open Seasons on Korda 6 show Montross and all of the True Mandalorians absolutely filthy.  Go for it.

As for the Jetpack, I just scowered over my copy of Open Seasons, there are no good shots of his jetpack and the few glimpses we get are just silver.  I don't have the figure myself (unfortunately) but your paint scheme looks spot on.  Keep up the good work!

Alright, here she is all assembled. Last things I need to do is weather and add the buckles to make it wearable. Think it came out pretty good. The beacon and stabilizer are on threaded bolts as well. The piano keys were a pain in the butt cause they weren't all 100% identical in size so I started by attaching the "control" pieces per MoM reference of the ESB Fett pack and eyeballed the rest of them as best as I could. So, the only pieces on this pack relying on adhesive is strictly the piano keys!

I know it's been a hot minute since I made an update with this. I've been really focused on some other obligations at the moment. I *did* get in a cold-cast back plate (one of Cruzers) and surprisingly seems that it will fit. While the back plate isn't necessary for Merc approval, I have to take into consideration that the 501st approval won't let that slide, so I opted to get it anyways.

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/1924330_10203795295818691_7438979237389185897_n.jpg?oh=f2a149dca2c5f21ef3dada03f6a6ac27&oe=5502C49C&__gda__=1426510615_a3cf875dea24d30d0e147f772fde0138)

2nd item, which I got along with the backplate, is one of the more rare sets, a Marrow Sun interior kit, based off the Ridell mini-helmets. This was BKBT's set, painted by MS in a Jango Fett them. I don't think I'll be using this for my Montross for multiple reasons, mainly the fact that I have already constructed my helmet, and I'd have to modify it to allow these pieces to fit. The 2nd being that it's actually fairly large. I am thinking of re-fininishing my original BKBT jango lid as it should, including this in there and making the entire helmet a display piece.

As for the project right now, I did find a local leather worker who can do some tailoring of my flak vest(s), just need to find the time to go down there and get it going..

Yep, I've been wanting one of these interior kits since MS debuted them. Got close at one point, his final run of them and he up'ed and disappeared. I eventually got my money back at least, but couldn't pass up the offer from BKBT for his set.

Honestly, the soft parts are what kinda got me into a slower-progress mode. I've still got the rest of the armor pieces I still need to finish. The chest armor parts still have some flaws and dips in some parts that I need to fill. Would like to get these pieces to a nice, smooth and glossy shine before I even think of pouring some silicone on them

Also, if you don't want to use those interior pieces, I know a little blue Mando that would be veeeery interested in giving them a new home.  LOL

Also, I just found a high quality, high detail pic of the Montross figure. I spliced it together from the ebay listing. Thought I'd share.

So just posting an *update* on my situation.

As per my past mentions, I did move to North Virginia/Washington DC area. I've been here for about 3 weeks now but still waiting for my apartment to be ready..so I've been living out of a hotel!

I was able to pack all the components for this costume and bring it with me. I've kept the helmet with me, but due to the cold weather, it appears one of the ear cap's bolts had become brittle and essentially broke off. That's fortunately the ONLY damage I've seen to the helmet but externally it's perfectly fine.

I'll get back on this as soon as I can move in and the weather warms up!

That's a bummer on your helmet  :-[  Good side is it could be worse I guess.

I look forward to seeing more updates on your build in the coming months.

Just an update.

I've since moved into my new apartment. I got he bonus that I have access to a workshed/space. The thing though is that it's still freaking cold as crap. I'm working on some other things at the moment too, but yea, I'm easing back into the prop-building slowly. I'll be sharing this workspace though with another tenet, who's been more established here, so I still really gotta coordinate with him.

I was given a name of a tailor as well, whom I still need to get in touch with.

Other than that, I'm still re-paying my family for some expenses from the move here, so yea..

It's hectic but I'm not stopping yet!

On a side note, it looks like all your pics are having trouble.  Might want to check your image host.

Huh that's odd. The images on the first page are still up...wonder what that's all about.

I have everything saved if I need to re-upload stuff!

Took a lot longer than I expected but taking pics with a timer while trying to keep your armor held up with blue tape is not exactly..easy..

Just wanted to see how it all looked so far.

Stick with it man, this kit is going to be awesome when it's done.

Thanks man!!

Did something else today too. I've had this Cruzer cold cast backplate sitting around so I figured why not do something about it. I'm not entirely sure I'll really be able to use this, but I'd have to heat and widen up the lower sides that stick inward. I think that's all I'd need to do to make it work out, but the backplate will more than likely be required for 501st approval, regardless if it's visible or not

Just hit it with some 400 grit sandpaper to eliminate the gray primer coat

One good once-over with the aluminum polish..

Nice and shiny. Still need to do some edge smoothing but it's alright to polish it up anyways

I actually had a JP harness made for me by BKBT on TDH. He was looking to do another run and made one for myself, but I don't think there was a whole lot of interest for him to continue with it. Its quite nice and completely adjustable. I just need to finish the pack and get some buckles attached so I can run around the apartment like an idiot wearing it

Looking to get back into this. Motivation kind of fell after issues with soft parts. I began to finish weathering up my jetpack as I had left incomplete prior to my move to DC. I have a local tailor who can re-work my leather flak vests, so that should be something to do soon. I've also decided that I need to re-dye the flak vest color to be a more Navy blue color, so I have that dye material on hand...just gotta get around to doing it.

Things have been slow prop wise since the move with the exception of a few things. Namely, my work space has been cut drastically. I did have access to a work shed on my landlord's property, but he promptly turned it into storage for one of his (many) vacation homes he sold. Looking to move out and into an actual house or town house w/ garage with the girlfriend.

It helps that there's a relatively active mando mercs group up here. Seems a lot of people are starting their own mando builds, as well as my SO. Hopefully can get more progress on this, especially once winter's over..

Revisiting this. Hoping to have something ready for Celebration Orlando in April. The girlfriend is doing Jango, so this will be a good couple's costume

My girlfriend's armor on the right which is for normal sized people. Gonna be finishing up my armor masters hopefully sooner than later and will be doing some mold making

I've got someone to tailor my flak vest finally. Last major hurdle is the flightsuit and the cape. I'm also thinking of re-doing my arm sleeves too...

I've ordered some boots as well, which hopefully will arrive in time from the UK

Thanks Joe!

I got a bit more done today. Taking a few days off so I wanted to get the ball rolling on making the other pectoral piece. This is a technique I've been wanting to try for awhile and discovered this from Bobamaker's page on how he had to create the opposite jango pectoral. I will say, maybe due to the significantly larger scale my piece is to a normal jango pec, it was seemingly more difficult than it looks. Nonetheless, I feel it worked well enough for my needs so I can't complain. While the outcome is not a smooth surface, the idea is you're mirroring the overall shape so you're not trying to make it symmetrical by sculpting it.

The one thing I will be doing differently, however, is that Daz used his resin copy as the final master. For myself, as I did with the first sintra pec, by creating a form and heating/shaping the sintra, I'll be doing the same with this piece, by reinforcing and cleaning the surface, pressing into the plastic.

The surface is funky as I had used talcum powder to thicken the resin. Unfortunately, despite the work time stating 10 minutes, it was already starting to cure closer to 5, therefore some of the larger clumps. Was my first time doing that, so I'll just experiment next time...

Little bit more work today. While doesn't look like much, trying to sculpt this was a chore. This piece will sit on the lower-center part of the belt. I used magic sculpt and just went at it. It's not perfect, but considering I suck at sculpting (anything in clay) I think it's alright. Once it cures I'll be scribing in the teeth details. Once it's done, I'll make a quick mold and cold-cast the piece. Think it'll look good once that process is done.

Additionally, I reinforced the rear of that resin copy I did yesterday. It's no longer going to flex, so I can start cleaning the top-side without fear of breaking anything. As I said, this will just serve as the form for the sintra.

As for the other armor parts, I'm gonna reinforce the collar piece the same way as it's pretty flexible. Another thing to note though, I'm wondering if the collar may just be a bit too wide for me, but I'll consult with locals about that before proceeding forward

No new pics at the moment unfortunately but I did get my boots in the other day. So I'll be modifying those and need to beat them up a bit however I may just dirty them and let them naturally scuff.

Additionally I have found a local seamstress who will be fabricating my body suit, modifying my leather flak vest and making me new arm glove sleeves. So it's going

I'm still waist deep in my girlfriend's jango build so that's been keeping me busy.

I have some tips for weathering leaher boots-try kicking around in the fenders of your vehicle to scrape up the toes and leading edges of them, then hit them with some roughly 150grit sandpaper to take away the shine

Good idea. Fortunately these boots are dull in appearance. I'm gonna try and make them more stained/dirty rather then deliberately tear it apart - I'd rather let that happen naturally

Not much to show today since the past 2 weeks or so I've been focused on the Jango helmet and gauntlets. However, I did finally get my belt rig done. I may push the side pouches a bit more forward though. I added the skull w/ some weathering and took scrap leather, "etched" the line detail, dyed and attached to the center belt. Glad w/ how it came out. I'll eventually want to trade out the front-hanging straps with something more detailed and functional for future dual-pistol holsters....

OK, more of a substantial update this time

I've been able to re-focus on the chest armor components finally. I've been doing the final clean up and surface prep for molding over the weekend. I initially felt that the remaining work would put me through till the weekend, however, not the case. I've got all pieces ready except for the right-side pectoral, which should be done and ready by tomorrow.

Added the slots to the pec

I spent last night prepping 2 of the pieces for molding, as I'll be doing 2 at a time and starting the molding process tonight.

Also, I received my re-tailored flak vest yesterday. I need to re-dye the entire thing into a royal/navy blue, so this will be fun

Additionally I think my phone's camera is starting to die out...getting some really bad images lately

Got started on the armor molds last night. Messy process, but all cured as of this morning. I'll be adding the mother mold tonight and I should be able to demold these 2 on Wednesday. The last 2 pieces are almost ready and will hopefully be adding rubber to them as well on wednesday. If all goes as planned, I should have those done by Friday. I may even try and start the casting process on wednesday or thursday and friday. Would be nice to have the armor parts ready for mounting to the flak vest over the weekend

Title: Re: Open Seasons: Montross "The Brutal" **Update MAR 28 2017
Post by: tubachris85x on Mar 29, 2017, 02:18 PM
So last night was frustrating. I was all ready to start the mother molds for the collar and ab plate molds....I open my free form air tubs....and part A is effectively dried up and non-usable. I was told I could just add water and it'll be good...nope...made it more of a mess than anything. Due to needing the molds done by the weekend and being broke till thursday, my buddy saved my ***** and secured a new batch which should arrive friday, allowing me to complete the mother molds that night to be ready by saturday. Additionally, I was having a hard time trying to dye jango gauntlet hoses but that crisis is now averted. I prepped the last 2 pectoral pieces for silicone today. While I applied a clear coat on the first 2 pieces, it had a weird reaction on one of the pectoral plates, leaving what looked like heavy scratches..I'm not sure what happened, but I decided that for these last 2 pieces I'm not gonna risk that again, just sanding them smooth up to 2000 grit.

I'll do a once over with the 2k grit before we start adding the rubber. Additionally, I've dyed the linen to be used for my cape and neck seal, though I realized that the neck seal should be the same tone as the body suit, so I'll play with that at some point. I did throw it in the dye bath a 2nd time since this pic, so it'll hopefully be a little darker, but the color is pretty close. I'll add some black as well to it which should help, then of course the weathering later on...

Alright, well, I've had a minor set back yesterday. I was trimming the excess silicone from the right-side pectoral mold and mis-identified the edge...well, the pic below speaks for itself. Fortunately, as upset as I was, I still had a whole night before I get the new mother mold material, so I removed it and re-did the mold...I just cannot make this mistake again....

I wasn't having luck with the dye, so I scrapped it and sourced a new fabric..luckily, I found this nearly perfect color cotton fabric..which I'll be using for my cape. I need to find a shirt for it or have one made of the same fabric, but I'm not gonna stress too much.

Not pictured, but I did start working on the cod piece sculpt again. I need to have it ready no later than wednesday next week if I want to have it mold, cast and integrated onto my suit.

Lastly, a friend of mine pushed through making shoulder bells for me. The first ones he's sending me won't be refined, but he will re-do them after celebration. I should get them next week and can more than likely get them wearable.

Alright, got a big update now. Last Friday we did the mother molds, the girlfriend helped me out and we got it knocked out. I will saw I learned after the fact that I need to apply much more clay around the sides as demolding, I had discovered a few spots w/ undercuts, making demolding a challenge...

That being said though, the molds turned out well other wise.

We didn't waste time though, starting casting immediately. I used smooth on 326 to make the 'gel coat" cold cast and then backed that w/ cotton flocking and then Epoxamite w/ fiber cloth from west marine. I do need to tweak the process a bit though as some of the casts aren't as nice as I hoped (the cold cast portion at least). Additionally, much to my judgment, we made these a little too thick, so if I get around to doing another set, I'll have to cut it down.

This is after the cold-cast layer, a 2nd layer being that of just 326 w/ black tint and then the cotton flocking added to it.

And here are the first pulls. The collar and left-pec I had demolded first, and cleaned up. The ab plate has some swirls going on, but I was able to take almost all of it down while polishing it. Overall they are useable. I don't need them to be shiny like Jango and it's still much more silver in person than in photos. Honestly, at least for my costume I don't see a need to replace them down the road unless they break, but I'll tell you this epoxy is incredibly strong

Also over the weekend, another friend who has leather working experience dyed my flak vest to the navy-blue color I needed. I love the contrast with it and the armor. Another friend of mine also made my neckseal and (you'll see below) worked on my cape. Lastly, I made a quick chest diamond and made a mold of that...

And so here's where I'm at as of last night

Overall I'm quite happy about how it's coming along. Everything major is wearable now.

The last major things are:

-Finish/mold/cast cod piece
-Apply red design on chest armor
-Weather it all

I am also just waiting to get my stuff from the seamstress....which is the last major hurdle..

This is the home stretch for celebration

The shoulder bells did arrive yesterday and they're pretty much cleaned up and ready for paint. Had to focus on the Jango build. Tonight I will be meeting with the seamstress to find fabric for the rest of soft parts..after that, I am hoping to shift gears back to the cod piece, but I may or may not attempt to make a quick one-off just to get through celebration...We'll see how much I can get done tonight with it

Progress from last night.

Got the shoulders bells cleaned up and added the notch details, and painted the base-blue. Just have to add the red square. My friend is coming back over today so we'll get it fitted and add the leather strap, then those will be all done.

Last thing to rush through is this cod piece. I built up the main body for it awhile ago, but just now really getting to it. Using the floral foam to get the overall shape and then I covered it with magic sculpt. Smoothing it out took quite a bit of time. It's not perfect but it'll do the job. Just gotta continue sanding and cleaning it up as best as I can, but I could have it ready by friday for molding...coming down to the wire....

Well the cod piece is going in rubber tonight. I was honestly surprised with how well this cleaned up. It's not perfect, but I feel it looks pretty good. I may go back and make another one in the future but this will work

Should have the cast done and ready by Saturday afternoon, to which we'll throw it onto the rest of the suit

Thanks guys! I appreciate the compliments! Hope people like it after it's all said and done

I had to go and assist a friend who was doing some sewing work for the jango flightsuit, but my buddy was kind enough to take on molding the cod piece, which means we'll be able to pull a cast and have it ready by saturday afternoon.

Lastly, was able to throw the last of the primary paint for the shoulder bells. Just needs the leather straps, weathering and mounting

So tonight will be a good push for us. If all goes well enough, we should be done with this by saturday afternoon, hopefully I'll be able to take pics with everything on.

Hopefully

Those shoulder bells look pretty sweet!

Thanks! There's not really any solid reference in the comic for them, especially since he's only got them in a few frames before losing them in an explosion. I partially relied on the action figure for overall placement/size. The notches were a combination of the few ref shots..but can't be perfect

Kandosii on the kill stripes, vod!!!  I didn't get to see you at SWCO - but I saw the picture!     By the way, if you didn't know, Mando Memes (on FB) made a meme outta the picture. I tagged Mavic in it, but didn't know if you were on FB as well.

Reviving this thread to show off what is coming soon!

This is one of the props I've been wanting to do when starting this project, based off the concept art for Star Wars Bounty Hunter. While the in-game pistols are largely the same overall design, they added a lot more detail to that final game version. However, for the Open Seasons action figure, they gave him these pistols, which largely don't seem different from the concept art. Currently having the model printed by a friend. This was modeled by Indigenous Effects
