Title: Korran Orainn, Mando Engineer - UPDATE 20/07 - SWCE Update!
Post by: Korran Orainn on Aug 29, 2014, 08:35 AM
SWCE Update on page 10!

'Cuy!

About time I got one of these threads together. I've been umming and aahing alot over the last few days as to where I'm going with my kit, and with the help of Ashen I've hit it on the head.

Armour type: Light
Specialisation: Mobile Engineer
Quirks: Scavenger. Lots of 'junk' pieces (Chest Diamonds, shards of 'Iron etc). Plate honouring fallen Brethren.

I own roughly 50% of the softs I need, and am waiting until payday to get some supplies in for the armour. I have a background in IT, so I've got a few greeblies for a gauntlet already (LCD display, keys from a keyboard etc). Progress may be slow on this one, so bear with me!

General idea is to have some simple electrics. I've got a voice amp from an Army of Two cosplay, and will look into some simple LED kits. I've got a wee digital photoframe coming that I hope to integrate into my left gaunt, along with some keys to function as some kind of software...integration...fixy...thing. Not sure what to do with the other gaunt. I shall be getting some form of leather pouches to hold my in-universe tools.

I have a background in miniatures painting, so I'm looking forward to painting this one! I'm going to try out the Hairspray method of weathering on a large scale - an example of this is below:

TL;DR = Will take some time. Stay tuned for grimy, oil-stained updates!

I look forward to seeing your progress.  Big points for doing a "junker" kit, though; I've kicked around that idea a few times, but I'm far too fond of clean lines and plates to attempt it.

So, vod, get to work and wow us!

Cheers dude! I'm a sucker for weathering. I'm really looking forward to sullying my vest in particular! ;D

Printed, cut, and poorly stuck the templates together by myself. I know the spacing is far from perfect, but do you all think I have the right size of template? I'm 6'1"-and-a-bit, and printed the 'large' WOF templates.

FYI, the belly template ends at my nape, which I gather it is supposed to? I'm hoping that the width of the chest pieces, whilst off by around a mil or so, should look okay when formed and I am wearing the suit + vest. I really wanna get this right! :D

Thoughts? Too big/small?

Personally I'd say they are too close together, possibly 10mm off the edges and space to a thumb thickness.
placing though I feel is spot on, well done

I believe you are off to a great start.   I think once you get the spacing done I don't think you will have any problems.  Can't wait to see your progress in the future.

A wee delay with the PVC foamboard, but I did get a few softs in:

WWII Russian Mosin-Nagant pouches:

Generic boilersuit of death:

Framers gloves (logo removed)

All in all, pretty happy with the softs so far. Still to come is the vest/cape, which I am ordering from Etsy (partly due to inability, partly due to the sheer quality of the product!). Really love my 4 sets of pouches, got them for a very good price at a military antiques place in Cardiff. They even came pre-warn, how thoughtful! :P

Really happy with it, seems spot on with my concept.

Been neglecting this thread!

So I've cut and shaped the chest pieces (I really need to take more pictures). Just the backplate, cod, knees and gaunts to go!
Flightsuit needs some adjusting, it's currently too short for me (I'm 6'2", the suit feels at least two inches too short)

Oh, and I've been working on this:

Where is your vest ending? It should be right around your belly button. I thought mine was short when I first started doing this as well.

My vest is spot on (ends right at the nape), it's my flight suit that's giving me grief! Its okay width/chest wise (albiet a wee bit baggy), but doesn't cover my height very well. Sitting down is difficult! :P

You could always split it into 2 pieces, add an extra strip of material to one side and then some form of fastening like a zip, velcro, buttons or snaps so they stay as one piece again. A wide sash over that and under the vest will hide the gap and a couple of snaps would keep the sash from working its way downwards. You could just use the sash or have a girthbelt over the top of it so that the sash is just a colourful decoration.

I had a very similar idea! Great minds and all that ;D
It might need to be taken in a little too, the waifu is starting to make dresses and such at the moment, so I may have to bribe her borrow her skills!

I've made some good progress with my bucket, and I would love some feedback as this is my first venture into anything like this! Bear in mind that we have some way to go, and that this is a Mando scavenger - it's not meant to be clean, and I've actually taken a leaf from Boba and made small dents here and there!

And I'd stick with bribery. Seems to work best.

Update, second chest plate:

A close look at the Honour Plate (as I have dubbed it):

Diamond:

All together now (with the ab plate comically holding it up!)

Notes:

- I know it's weather-heavy. I'm a scavvy. And I've probably welded it for some reason.
- The 'Honour Plate' is something that my Character has done; note down the people that have made themselves immortal through tier deeds.

For those interested, the plate reads 'Remo' for his instrumental work that inspires not just the Vok'Chi, but the MMCC as a whole. 'Pogo', who was very kind and helpful to me when I decided to take the plunge into the world of the MMCC, who unfortunately passed away recently, and the names of my Waifu and kittens to fill the plate up a little.

Weathering looks top notch. Only thing I'd change to make it even better is match up some of the dings. Those diamond ones look like they should have corresponding scratches in the chest pieces.

The weathering looks great Vod, I don't know how I feel about the deep cuts in the armor, especially the cracks at the edge of the plates, but it's your armor so it doesn't matter how I feel about it

Looks good. Although in a bit of hind sight, the weathering round the outside of the plates looks a bit odd, it's very uniform and makes the plates look more like they're bordered than damaged. Maybe try making it look more solid in some areas and less uniform in length of scratches. However this is just a wee nitpicky suggestion because I can't fault anything else. How do they look on you?

Phwoar! Thank you all for your responses!

The weathering looks great Vod, I don't know how I feel about the deep cuts in the armor, especially the cracks at the edge of the plates, but it's your armor so it doesn't matter how I feel about it

Not at all Vod, your opinion is a valid one to me. As a Scavvy, I felt that having well-worn durasteel is more appropriate that Mandalorian Iron, and wanted alot of this to tell a story (see the Diamond scrapes as an example). Hopefully when I get some brown tones in, I can change your mind :D

Nice! I love the battle damage.
I'm about to start that step myself.
What was your technique?

Well Vod, the important thing to remember is that there is no right way to do it. It's quite popular to basecoat a metallic colour and using toothpaste/masking fluid in appropriate places. I feel this is not natural enough for me, so this is my whole painting process:

1) Prime (I used Grey)
2) Metallic coat
3) coat of cheap hairspray (acts as a pseudo-varnish)
4) top coat
5) Attack! Sand it, stab it, chip it, drop it, sand it again. This will literally chip your top coat off and create REAL damage
6) blackwash - I actually use miniatures paint and a kitchen sponge to apply mine. This fills in your sanding and creates depth
7) Drybrush a metallic paint. It is important that this is different colour to your metallic basecoat in step 2). Again, I used a miniatures paint as it dries and seals very well!
8) second blackwash

I am also due to do a ninth step soon, which is rust and muck!

You're 100% right. On close inspection, there is a lot of variance, but from far away (where most pics will be taken!) it looks *too* uniform. I'll address this with extra drybrushing and washing. Hopefully my VERY selective rusting and mucking will help break up this 'border' feel. Thanks VERY much for this feedback Kit!

Looking good, vod!  Good and busted up! :D

Thank you Vod! This means very much to this Hopeful Mando! <3

Ha! Basically my plan.
I hit mine with primer Greg.
The 3 coats of alternating "hammered metallic" gunmetal & copper each.
Then the topcoat.
Plus now I am laminating copper playing as a detail.
When all is pristene, I plan to kick the %+@#$ out of it with a Dremel & my driveway.
Then TouchUp paint & black/brown wash.

I am glad to see someone of a like mind here, looking to add some "real" damage to the armor.

Sorry for the lack of updates all, I've been working REALLY hard on this kit. I've got pictures for you, but I took them on my phone. been steaming along so hard I wasn't willing to sacrifice the time to get my SLR! lol

EDIT: forgot to point out that, whilst hinged, these are not finished. I still need to make a proper enclosure (likely velcro) to hold them together. So still WIP!!!

Here we are, left gaunt:

I will be making this into either a wristblaster or an Engineer multitool at a later date. For now, I just want a base gaunt before I head down that road! That said:

The Right gaunt. I made a top plate, and drilled through the whole thing to mount working keys and a display. When I get some time, I must do some little swarzy images for it!

one thing

I see lots of weathering BUT im not seeing surface scratches  ???  Id recommend hitting the plates with Light passes of different grit sandpaper / wire wool, these scratches will make the weathering look a lot more Real.

Sure thing Vod; this is an Advent ADE-MDPF 1.5. It takes AAA batteries, and sticks out a fair amount so you'll need to hollow out a surface that you wish to mount it to. There may well be better options out there for a Gaunt screen, but this cost me a mere 3!

Nice stuff vod ;)

one thing

I see lots of weathering BUT im not seeing surface scratches  ???  Id recommend hitting the plates with Light passes of different grit sandpaper / wire wool, these scratches will make the weathering look a lot more Real.

This may be the recent pictures with the phone camera, but like the plates I weather with two grades of sandpaper (I have no idea what ones, they were left over from doing the house!), wood files, and lots of mistakes with the dremel.

I think I'll do another blackwash to the plates as my metallic touch-ups are removing more of the visible gouges I have made. Thanks very much for the feedback dude! :D

Got a picture for you all here from a wee Halloween party we had on Saturday:

Got to try the whole kit on for the first time! Sadly don't have any more pictures (really sad. I love my shoulder cape, and you can't see it here :L). Found a few kinks that need working on, such as shortening the gauntlets (they limit my arm movement atm) and bringing the flightsuit in a tad :)

Cheers all!

Sad thread neglection!

Unfortunately no picures for you Vode. I took this kit as it stands to Cardiff Film and Comic Con - some pictures to come. Unfortunately we had a belly plate mishap resulting in one of the snaps to come away from the armour. Whilst I jury-rigged it to some degree, it is out by a degree or so on some pictures.

Planned updates before pre-approval pictures:

1) Shin armour. My lower is lacking detail!
2) Light boot armour. Only a teensie bit, but again, I feel this is needed.
3) Buy'ce improvements: Clone fin, fan system, possbily an RF servo and maybe even some LED's. Padding.
4) ARC trooper-like shoulder pad.
5) Furher weathering of the softs
6) General improvements to Knee&Cod
7) Left Gauntlet (this one is gonna be a wristblaster :D)

Also working on a LED screen display for my Blaster (another thread that is in dire need for an update...)

Decided I will be dyeing my vest a darker shade. It conflicts with my plates too much!

I'd say leave the vest, It looks fine and if it gets to close to the colour of the plates they will loose impact and blend in, Except the orange of course.

Probably just weather it, white has become a sort of accessory colour with this kit :)

Currently thinking of some designs to put on there!

I'd say leave the vest, It looks fine and if it gets to close to the colour of the plates they will loose impact and blend in, Except the orange of course.

I can't help but feel it needs a little more definition, even after weathering it's tricky to tell where the plates end and where the vest begins...don't get me wrong,  I was grateful for that at the con as my blooming Ab plate came loose!

Thanks for the feedback both :D x

Awesome kit, mate! Very inspiring indeed!

Going back to the picture frame on your gauntlet, did you say you did pics for them and cycle through them, or do they cycle when you press one of the buttons?

Either way, very well done!!

Both, interestingly!

This particular photoframe has both a cycle mode (which you can set when you plug it in via USB - standard is ten seconds) OR you can hit the next/previous buttons that are disguised on the side.

I tend it leave it as a static image, and then 'type' on my keys (sneakily hitting a next/previous button if I fancy it!)

Were I to do this project again, I would futher study mini photoframe makes and models to get one that is a slimmer profile. In addition, if you decide to go down this route, make sure you get one that supports .GIF. It looks so cool to have a motion tracker on your Gaunt!

Thanks for commenting, if you make something similar please link me to it! :)

Means so much to me Kit, thank you <3

I've been watching this build for a while. It's very VERY impressive. I also come from a miniature background (legions of Warhammer 40k minis) and my Mando was the first time I ever really attempted something on this scale. A lot of the skills we developed painting minis carries over to armor. Some don't.

The one and ONLY thing that throws me off about your kit is the battle damage around the edges of your plates. It looks like brush strokes and not natural damage. Of course they are deliberate brush strokes but they shouldn't look like deliberate brush strokes. We can get away with dry brushing silver on our minis but that doesn't always translate over very well to the larger scale. I learned that the hard way and ended up stripping my bucket and starting over....twice  :'(

I'm only telling you this because you're a fellow mini painter and I know you've got OCD (obsessive compulsive detailing) like I do. Obviously this isn't a deal breaker when it comes time to getting your kit approved. It's just something that will make your awesome kit and epic kit.

Thanks Tyno, your feedback means alot to me!

I agree with everything you've said; when I worked on individual plates I had my miniatures-focus mode active, and thus forgot about the bigger picture as a whole....doh!

I've managed to get in some artists charcoal, so once I've sorted my vest out I can re-address my beskar with a better frame of mind.

Cheers!

Emboldened by my Vode, I braved the freezing temperatures and got a wee bit of work done:

Started work on blaster gauntlet. Added two switches (one has a mechanical safety cover, proper oldschool!)
The two tubes will be the barrels of the blaster, not 100% sure how to tackle it just yet!

WIP scratchbuilt clone fin made of 3x layers of 5mm sintra. Will glue and fill on to the buy'ce, then mask and paint it. Thinking the same grey as the rest of the kit atm...

Tested the fit of the shoulderpad with my neck seal and buy'ce, pleased to announce it's very comfy!

Also got more work done on my blaster, and managed to use a third grade of sandpaper and artists charcoal to enhance the weathering of the plates. Looks better now...(sadly no pictures of that as I want to do the backpiece and gaunts as well. Expect images of that soon)

Still have to make my shins and find a tool tool pouch thingy for my thigh. Preferably leather to match my pouches!

Thanks for bearing with me and all your supportive words so far!

Small progress in the build: still need to do the shins, a blade, and I'm working on getting some diamonds out to my vode in the Vok'Chi!

So, one issue I had with my kit (as well as those listed previously...!) was that it was detailed at the top, but sparse on the bottom. I always planned on having a thigh-mounted tool pouch (to be an Engi/scav) and got these today in Cardiff:

WWII GPMG tools

be careful with the rank rope color.  Specific positions with in the club wear specific colors (all command staff).  You are more than allowed to wear a rank rope if you are not Council or Clan command staff, but just be sure you're not wearing a color that is worn by someone else.  Basically you have to avoid Gold, White, Grey, Blue, Green, Black/White, and Red/White.  any other combinations or stand alone colors are allowed.  Just a warning.

Early days! I plan on going for the Mobile Engineers Brigade, so I need a place to hold a fusion cutter and a hydrospanner. I was toying around with having tool pockets on my thighs, like Boba, but my scale drawings of the aforementioned tools shot that down!

I may remove the belt loop and attach it via snaps to my thigh instead...?

I can dig it.  The idea of attaching it to your thigh is a little Liefeld, but I think you could pull is off nicely, if you rig it up right.  Then again, I'm also a sucker for a good drop-holster.

Bahahah, that actually made me second-guess the placement of my shins as well :L

Well chaps, I'll be painting my shins at lunchtime today (my colleagues must love me :P) and I had a little play around with some EL wire last night:

Looks okay! Just need to stop it blinding me quite so much...and find a way of affixing it (it's cellotaped in on the picture. REALLY not ideal at all.

Thanks for all your comments, it's a great confidence booster!

Haha! Could be a possibility...snaps on knees and shins are a bad idea. Mine kept falling of :( Thank Mand'alor for Gaffa tape!

Thanks about the helmet boss! Actually going with a proper lighting kit from Dresdon as I want a new visor too (major love to Kit for sorting out a Vok'Chi order btw!)

Essentially, I wasn't happy with the paintwork, and I feel the colours weren't swarzy enough, nor did I appear to have any Cuy'Val Dar background sans a fin glued to my Buy'ce. Not having that!

Yeah, I get that a lot  8)

just kidding!

The repaint looks great! Weathering is very well done!

I do agree that you could use a bit more orange. I know the fin is part of your overall design but what about an orange stripe where the fine should be? You leave the scar from where the fin was then add the stripe as a nod to the clone heritage. Kind of like a natural progression of the character. Just a thought.

Cheers Ori'vod!

Great minds and all that; I've been working on a very wide white stripe that encompasses the top of the dome, with a smaller orange stripe w/ thick black outline where the fin would go. Should look pretty cool!

I do intend on adding a fin again, but not a poorly-made scratch built one. Will likely buy a Hasbro clone bucket and hack that apart :)

I had around 90 minutes free this weekend, and decided to start repainting my armour plates. Pretty straightforward stuff; White for the Clone background and grey to match the Buy'ce. Did lots of sanding and a little weathering too...

Gauntlets will be in my bright, garish orange. As you can see, I've done the datapad one already...left out the other one for now as a intend on rebuilding it into a flamethrower...also have a black kama w/ white piping inbound. Stay tuned!

I am!

I currently have Remo and Pogo written in Mando'a on my Diamond. They're never leaving.

However, I'm thinking of adding a single thigh plate in the future (on the leg without the tool pouch) to mark down Clone tallies and fallen Vode...should be nice touch :)

Thanks Vod...in truth, so am I. I will be painting my gaunts and earcaps in Orange...and you can still see it from the 'T' weathering!

I have a background in miniatures painting, so I'm looking forward to painting this one!
Me too (I'm a long time table top wargamer). It's been really interesting for me looking through your WIP and recognising those mini-painter techniques applied to the larger scale. Let's just say you've saved me a lot of trial and error  ;)

For what it's worth, I think you made the right choice in the repaint for your helmet - the metal didn't quite look ... well, metal. Can't wait to see where you take it next  :D

Kih'parjai, Vod! I aim to make mistakes so others don't have to! :D

I have some new things to show off, Vode. First up, the lovely Pascale of CreativeArtShop has made me a gorgeous kama to go with my Pauldron:

Are you feeling the Clone love, yet? :L
(http://s20.postimg.org/lcrye5pv1/11693977_720841428028255_7229511617485788953_n.jpg)

In addition, I've tinkered with my Wristblaster!
It's had some tubing, and a cover for the bare barrels to make it more like SBD's wristblaster. I've also coloured it orange, to match the other gaunt...please note, this is not weathered yet! The cover also needs a trim. Just wanted to share :)

The rush for LFCC is real. Still to do, in order of urgency:

1) Elasticate second knee
2) Nylon strapping on the shins
3) Buy'ce stripe
4) Weather the Kama (as it may or may not arrive in time...!)

Just a minor update for those interested (boo, no pictures!) and a chance to do a braindump:

This weekend is London Film and Comic Con. Not only will it be a fun chance to hang out with some OM's, I also plan on absorbing as much knowledge as possible like some kind of weird, beskar-plated sponge.

I already have some things planned for this thread following the end of LFCC:

1) Add a 'sun visor' to the Buy'ce (think Commander Cody)
2) Add a clone fin (yeah...it's coming back!)
3) Clone tallies
4) Add armour to the boots (sadly lacking it atm)
5) Improve the backpiece (needs shaping, more velcro...etc. hoping to pick up some tips)

I'm also going to be making a Westar M-5.

Then...well, I guess it'll be time to submit my application, pending a million fixes from everything breaking on this massive troop!

Stay tuned for some pictures, hopefully ones where my kit is in one piece :L

PS: I've booked a photoshoot with Jeremy Bulloch. In Boba gear. Excited is NOT the word! :D

I like the new additions a lot. Especially that paint job.

5) Improve the backpiece (needs shaping, more velcro...etc. hoping to pick up some tips)

The easiest, and best, way to make a backplate is with 4 people (you and 3 others). You get to stand there and get an awesome warm back rub while everyone else does the work. Get the entire plate heated up evenly, it has to be really flexible. One person will hold the shoulder tabs in place. One person holds the side tabs in place. The third person rubs their hands over your entire back working out any weird kinks and flexes. I've formed 4 backplates this way and they all turned out wonderful, didn't even have the usual shoulder flaring out problem that sintra backplates get.

I've done several that way too. Oven heated sintra till it's rather floppy and then as many people as I can grab holding all the edges down. Does make for a rather amusing moment.

Well, LFCC is over, and the post-con blues begin!

Had a tremendous time with my Vode, and as an added bonus my Kama arrived at the last minute!

Pics to follow, but I do have a little something to share, my revised concept. Hopefully it goes to show that nothing is ever set in stone, and it's likely that details will change over time. My regret is not planning out what I wanted properly earlier - learn from my wee errors and really think about where you want to go with your kit. Doodles, scribbles, daydreams - the more you have, the more solidarity you'll have with your concept and a clearer end goal :)

An utterly incredible time with the Vok'chi, only wish it was twice as long! I learned alot over the weekend; chief among which is that velcro is much better than snaps for my legs, My flightsuit needs to adjusted to accommodate my height still (bending is impossibru), and I need to stop standing side-on in all my pictures XD

Big thanks to Shaun for these

And to Pete for this one

The kit has gone through some minor upgrades since last time; improvement of the belt area, knee and shin reinforcement, improved gauntlet closures, and a fancy new E-11 (full size, resin, plastic and metal components). Here is where we stand:

And the 'salvaged' E-11:

I've been hoping to shoot for approval for some time now...I'm heading to CE this year where I'm hoping some OM's can give me a hand! :D

Cheers all,
Ollie

I feel ashamed for missing this fantastic kit. Vod, I'm in love with your work! The detail is awesome! Gotta say, I'm a fan of the colors....But you need a wolf center on your head. No bias to that or anything  :P hope this gets approved soon!

With Celebration gone, I've got a few more cool pictures to share of this kit now!

With Res'ad's DC-15A...I'm in love with this thing!

Overall, a brilliant event. Sadly didn't get any pre-app pics done, but had some very encouraging words from some of the coolest OM's going! :D

'till next time!
