Title: Kryamla's Armor - Now with Upgrades!
Post by: Kryamla Redalur on Oct 14, 2014, 02:50 PM
Hello fellow femmandos! I already have my soft parts started and almost completed so I figured it's about time that I start my armor thread. (see signature for the soft parts thread link) I currently do not have lots done and it probably going to be a long process since I'm in my final semester of college.

Here is the overall goal/look for my armor.

Here is a picture of my right knee and both shoulder armor parts. I only have the right knee because I accidentally cut through the left and have yet to make a new one. This is the first coat of silver for the base.

Side view of silver base paint

Painted knee!

Side view!

So I need to black wash still amongst other thing that still needs to be done. But any thoughts or comments thus far?

What is your armor made from? It looks pretty thin, which has lead to warping during the shaping process.

Post by: Kryamla Redalur on Oct 14, 2014, 03:32 PM
It's kydex. And yes I agree. When I ordered it, I didn't realize that it was going to be that thin. Any suggestions to fix it?

Post by: Ref Al'drann on Oct 14, 2014, 03:34 PM
Is Kydex similar to Worbla? Do you have enough to dual layer it? You could also form it on a buck, which is basically just anything solid that you can press the material onto and form the shape around instead of doing it by hand.
Title: Re: Kryamla's Armor WIP
Post by: Kryamla Redalur on Oct 14, 2014, 03:39 PM
It's a plastic type material. I'm not sure what worbla is like so I'm honestly not sure about that. I can try reshaping it  using the buck method! If not, I'll go with another method.

I'd suggest taking some time to sand the points off of your edges - they're looking a bit ragged  :(

Are you talking about on the shoulder thingys?

Yes, particularly on the forward edge.

Yes, particularly on the forward edge.

Gotcha! Thank you! I shall do that!

yeah the form on them could use a little tweaking... I'm not as much of a fan as thinner plastics, as they tend to do funky things when they get hot.. a trick to eliminate that is dont get them quite so hot next time, sometimes you can heat them enough, and bend them to the shape you need.
You could also try to find some cans or jars or something hard and sturdy to bend the plates on to give them a more uniform bend.

The colors are gonna look super cool together when its all done btw, i love the purple/white combo :)

PS: double layering some pieces would be a pretty good idea with this thinner plastic, as it will help reinforce and add strength to the plastic. as well if you layer the outside it can look pretty awesome. I love my layered chest plates :)

Kydex is the material that fitted gun holsters are made from.  Most are either wet-formed leather or Kydex.  Even though it's thin, it should be pretty durable.

I haven't quite decided in what direction, everyone has given good advice so now it's just sorting through it all. I'm at the point where I'm considering buying the armor and painting it. Lots to think about! But thank you!

That's how I got the idea to use kydex for the armor, my boyfriend has made some holsters out of it and it seemed relatively easy to work with lol. But time will tell if I decide to further the use of it or not.

You can go in either direction with the armor, there are some great armor makers here on the boards and you can get a set at a really reasonable price.

If you want to do the home made, as others have pointed out, heat it up until it just starts to bend and then form it. Shoulders don't need much of a bend, so just making them even is a good thing to shoot for. Knees are pretty similar in that the forming is more of a "u" shape when you look at them from the top down as it would fit on your knees. My chest plates, I literally heated one side at a time and using heat resistant gloves so I didn't burn my hands, pushed the plates to my chest to help get the shape and the bends in the right places. Highly suggest putting on your vest first as using that as a layer of protection from the hot plastic. If you are going to do the formed breast plates, you'll have to watch the forming over complex curves as the plastic can form folds, and if you get the pieces too hot, they will warp and create sharp bends/divots that you have to reheat and gently coax back into shape.

Another way is to use a bowl with a rounded bottom on the inside and get the plastic heated up and then push it gently down into the bowl, usually using something round to push the plastic with, to form your cups, remembering to leave enough material for the bottom corners of your plates and when you are forming plastic into cups you have to remember that the flat shape will be bigger than you think.

A tool that a lot of costumers use is to make a duct tape dummy of themselves so that they can form the armor to their body shape and is usually a lot easier than trying to push the items onto yourself.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing your armor progress.

I'm thinking at this point in time, I'm planning on buying armor from the mandalorian arsenal. I've seen a lot of people use their armor and they have pretty reasonable prices. As for a helmet, Im hoping to buy a helmet from saz. I just have to save a little bit more for everything and hopefully I'll get that going soon!

Was it hard to reshape and trim? I have zero experience doing things like that and don't want to ruin it lol

It's sintra, so you can use a dremmel or a really heavy duty box cutter if you're more comfortable. And yeah, reshaping is really easy as long as you have a heat gun. I had to reshape most of the plates a bit so they fit me properly.

Yeah sintra is easy to work with, just go slow with your cutting. I usually use a very sharp exacto knife and the key is to make several light to medium cuts and let the blade do the work. If you try to force the cut on one path, you will definitely get hurt. Use a heat gun and slowly work it up until it just starts to get bendy and then start your bends, but go easy on the bending. You'll do ok.

Meant to say on one pass...basically go over the same cut over and over again letting the blade cut through the layers. I use a ruler to guide the cuts the first few times and as they get deep, you can just let the cut guide the knife until you cut through.

GUESS WHAT CAME IN THE MAIL TODAY?!

I'm super excited! I'll get pictures uploaded tomorrow with it on me! The chest pieces and knees are a pretty good fit, probably just a little trimming there. The collar plate and shoulders will need some trimming too. It's the back plate that does worry me a bit, it's much bigger than I anticipated.... So I'll need some help figuring out how to fix it... But gosh, I feel like a kid on Christmas!  ;D

Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

Haha wish I thought of that!

Here are some pictures of them taped on. I know I'll have to do some trimming and such, but I definitely want some opinions on how much.

The chest part near the diamond isn't exact even, so that'll need some adjustments

I only put one shoulder on, the other side is the exact same way. Definitely needs to be smaller

There was no good way of getting a picture of the back plate on me, I'll try to figure that out lol

Thoughts on what needs to be done?

Trimming up the knees a bit will help, and I think the bottom of the ab plate. It looks a bit big on you. Everything else looks good. And remember, it's always easier to trim than to add, so I'd say it's a good thing the back plate is too big rather than the alternative :D

Yeah definitely agree with the knees and ab. I'm thinking of marking it with sharpie and posting some pictures before I cut just to make sure it's good before I cut it lol. A clan member said i have to move up the collar, but then I run into the issue of having too much gap between the collar and the chest. So I may do what you did with the cleavage armor if that's okay? ...haha cleavage armor  :P

Looks like it fits you really well. Curious though - how big is the shoulder from the side view. It doesn't look too big but if you were to move it down to the original positioning for shoulder bells it may be a bit big on you :) Otherwise looks great!

its like almost 1.5x-2x bigger than my shoulder but I like the over all shape so I think if I just cut it down with the same shape it'll be good.

But thank you very much for the feedback! It'll get there... One day :)

Don't see why not. There are certain styles where they have to even for guys armor. That I've seen approved numerous times. An overlap like that just needs to look intentional. Like how you had it sitting high up the shoulder. If it just barely overlapped or was right next to it I don't think it would fly. Your placement looked fine though. Why are you remaking the collar?.

I don't think that one fits my body the best. Plus, I think it'll need to be talle in order to follow the thumbs width apart rule. I was told to bring it up and if I do that I have a two inch gap between the bottom of the collar and the top of the chest. I traced out a new collar design on some paper, I'm hoping to get a picture up tonight to see what everyone thinks.

Instead of completely redoing your collar, have you considered adding a plate to fill the space between the collar and chest plates?  I know you said your current collar doesn't fit the best but you could reshape it with a heatgun.  Also, I like the look of the overlapping shoulder   :D

Yeah I have thought about that... The double collar is looking more and more appealing lol and I think I might try to trim it down before I make a new one. Might as well give it ago!

And you know, I'm thinking I like the over lapping too now that I'm looking it all over, I think if I trim the collar down it'll look pretty cool :)

Got some major work done! I trimmed the collar and back plate. Those will need to be re shaped so I don't have any pictures of those just yet

But I did the base paint and the main layer of paint:

Some of the silver base got a little runny so that'll have to be sanded down and fixed but overall, pretty excited :) I put some Vaseline in spots for the weathering later, I'm going for a more subtle look with damage and such

Thank you so much everyone! Progress will be slow this week since I'm out of town but when I get back expect more! :)

I plan on black/brown washing everything to dirty it up a it and making it less bright, but I'm going for minor weathering similar to Jango's. So I hear acrylic paint works best for this, but does anyone know of a thread or video that has a little explanation? Or can help me with it? I think I understand but I just might need a little direction with it lol

I'd say take some silver enamel and drybrush the edges and any raised parts, then take brown and black acrylic and mix it with a little water and dab a paper towel in it and whip it around on the the plate. rub off excess with a wet paper towel and layer how you want. I'd say do the brown first then black for the look you want.

Everything is looking good.

If you think about it the dirtying then all the lower extremities should be dirtier than upper reaches. Kneeling in dirt/mud/grime will only get knees and bootplates dirty. Walking and running will kick up dirt/mud/grime but not much higher than waist level. Gaunts would be an exception as you would reach down with your hands often so they would be dirtier that torso/shoulder plates and your bucket.

One of the cheeks needs to be pulled out and I need to attach the range finder and other ear cap but still pumped!

Yeah that's true, I was going to play around with it and how everything sits and if I don't like it then no biggie lol just giving myself some options lol

Updates! I've started the final touches on the blasters, just a little more paint/weathering and they'll be good. Not really real progress on the helmet or gauntlets yet. Trimmed down the back plate but still needs shaping.

And this...

Obviously the collar plate isn't attached and I need to make a filler plate. The ab plate needs some more Velcro as its floating away but overall yay! Thoughts? All of the plates are attached by Velcro so if spacing is off it can be adjusted.

:) :) :) YOU LOOK AMAZING!!! (and can I mention how sad I am that you're moving and we can't troop together??)

It's really starting to come together. The only things I see (adn I'm by far a non- expert) is possibly that your shoulder bells are a little too large for you yet, but I'm not sure what you could do about that at this point....and it might be fixed once you add your filler plate to the collar as well. It's not super noticeable though, I think you'll be fine.

I'm gonna have to agree with Aria about the shoulders, they do look large and placed to high. The positioning makes them seem clonetrooper pauldron-y.

For your filler plate between the collar and chest plates I would suggest using a copy of your collar with the sides trimmed in as an underlapping plate to your current collar.

Looks great though, you two can probably apply at the same time in the near future.

Okay after feedback, here's my to do list (other than what I've already mentioned

1) trim down the shoulders
2) as bazii said in my other thread, round the top of my ab plate

How much should I trim off the shoulders?
:) :) :) YOU LOOK AMAZING!!! (and can I mention how sad I am that you're moving and we can't troop together??)

Thanks! :) I know! I'm super bummed about that! :(

Just found your WIP.  I'm impressed.  This is coming together really wonderfully.  Unfortunately, I don't really have a suggestion for your shoulder plates, since I'm still a newbie at all this.  But I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your kit come together.

I really like this. Those plates from the madalorian arsenal?  I am working on the same set for my wife. I would sugggest movign the chest plates are far up as they will go. It looks like there as low as they can go? Anyway othjjer wise u will have a huge collar Armour  plate to make as the gap u have there is pretty big. I think the crl has certin dimesions uhave to meet.

Other wise your kit is turning out fabulous!  For some reason i picture your kit with a mcqire prototype fett helm would be amazing! (i Know u have a helm Just sayin)

Love your soft parts, love the colors you chose for your plates-- this is really coming together vod. And you will notice there is a huge gap between the collar and chest plates. I had the same issue with TMA's plates too and just made a secondary collar plate which worked out really well.

Yeah the plates are from the mandalorian arsenal, and surprisingly they are up as high as they can go... Because of some reasons lol. I was thinking about doing the double collar plate like you have corriban! I really love how yours looks and I figured that that is my best solution :) thank you all for the kind words :)

Update:

I apologize about any lack of updates because  my boyfriend and I moved across the country to California! We're finally getting settled in so that means time to work on the kit again!

I've finished my blasters:
And how's this for size on the back plate? Granted this is just being upheld so the placement is probably off.

Anyway, I'm excited to be back at it!

The W38s look good. Back is a good size but I'm not sure if your shoulder bells will interfere with the outer edge near the top.

Keep going.

The size of the back plate looks good, but like Natan said, do they fit with your shoulder bells and not rub? I had that issue for a while.

No I haven't named them yet! I need to get on that! They are twins so I'll need some twin sounding names I like Betty for one? lol

I have a feeling they'll over lap, but I'm thinking of trimming down my shoulders quite a bit. The tricky part is figuring out how much though lol

Ah!  ;D

So a couple of issues I ran into... The inside where the visor sits against the inside of the helmet isn't super smooth which doesn't allow the visor to rest smoothly against the cheeks. So I have to take visor out and sand it a bit; it's not really a big deal since its glued in with hot glue. I was just so excited to see what it would all look like! :)

Alright so I'm working on my gauntlets. The first set for me will be pretty basic and I hope to upgrade once I have more skillz/a place to do crazy stuff (I.e. Learn to fiberglass/bondo ). I've only done one because I wanted to opinions of everyone before I went ahead on the second one. I plan to use Velcro to keep them closed (if that's allowed) as well as adding some padding inside so they don't slip around. But here's what I got so far...

Top of gauntlet
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u163/feeldaforce/Kryamla%20Redalur%20WIP/image.jpg4_5.jpg)
Bottom of gauntlet

Thanks all!

I did use Velcro and then I got thinking... Since they will be so plain Jane initially, I wanted to add a little pizazz. So I got some spare pleather I had and cut it into strips to wrap around the gauntlets. They won't be tied once done (planning on adding snaps so they will always be the same), but this is more to show the look I'm going for. Eventually the gauntlets will be painted dark purple like my shoulders and knees so I think the white strips will add a little something.

Here I am , late to the party.
Love the color choice. Looks great. You are just waaaaaaay too shiny and clean! :)
If you haven't already trimmed the shoulders, you might try mounting them in closer to the neck by an inch or so. this would position them a bit more horizontally, but the overall width would be right on. (but I am partial to double shoulder plates, so you can consider that idea or not :) )

The plates in the picture seem to be hanging low and resting on the belt. Not bad necessarily, but  If you haven't already mounted them, try raising the whole thing, chest and ab, up two inches or more. Then stand tall and straight, shoulders back, chest puffed out like a peacock, and see how it looks.

You feel like a Mando Marine now?   HOOAH!!

Thanks for the feedback mercy! Clean and shiny are what I'm going for! The less is more look for me lol

About moving the chest and such up... Not really possible because of some things lol but to fill the gap I'm planning on another "collar plate". I'm currently waiting on a new vest from Sidi Ren that will be made from a stiffer material to help hold the plates up... Hopefully lol but if not some trimming will be in store lol. As to the shoulders... Haven't trimmed them yet, planning on it though. I have thought about a double shoulder, but I'd have to acquire some sintra... Oh the possibilities :)

-finish collar plates/attach
-trim ab plate/attach
-paint back/attach
-range finder: finish sanding, paint, and attach

Obviously thoughts, comments, virtual high fives are welcome :)

Smallish update:

I painted my range finder and ear caps, hopefully will assembling those in the next few days.  But question for those with a moveable range finder: how do you get it to move without being too loose? I'd prefer to be able to move mine but if there is no easy way to do so, I'll make it non-moveable.

Finished painting my back plate! Subtle weathering to match the chest plates.

There's another line of the bright purple on the top of the shoulders to help with the theme; ya just can't see it with the way I took the picture.

Hoping to attach that soon. Also got my ab plate and one of my collars attached but I wasn't able to take any pictures. While sewing Velcro, I stabbed myself and got some blood on my vest O_o instant panic mode. Thanks to oxyclean, it's out but it's drying so no more work can be done to the vest tonight.

I had this really annoying bubble in my visor so I thought I could be tricky and fix it without removing the visor all the way... Well I was wrong and completely ruined it... So I'm on the hunt for another chrome visor suggestions anyone?

Not sure about the visor....where did you get your first one? I just got a clear face shield from menards and put window tint over it. I've re-done it twice now. (Silly visors)

Backplate looks very good!  :)

OH NO! BLOOD?!! IT ALL CAME OFF THOUGH, RIGHT?!?!  :o

My range finder is just attached with a screw and washer/nut system....occasionally I tighten it up, but not often. Nothing too fancy.

Oh I didn't think about doing the visor that way... I got my first one from Dha Bral

Thanks about my back plate!

Thankfully yes, all the blood came out! I was terrified it wouldn't! Oxyclean = lifesaver! Now that it should be dry, I'll hopefully be attaching more plates today

I like things that are not fancy because my simple mind can understand it better lol

Collars are painted and attached! They just need some adjusting still. Also, attached to be back plate. I'm little worried about it; still needs some adjustment and shaping but Idk... Having some doubts.

Spacing on that front is looking good. Backplate looks fine to me except where its overlapping with the shoulders. You may need to trim either of them down so they have the room to coexist.

Same as Kris said. Liking how those collar plates are looking.   :)

The front is looking great!  In regards to your back, like Kris said, it looks like the back plate overlaps your shoulder bells.  If they don't but when you raise your arms see if the plates touch each other.  If this is the case you will definitely have to trim the top outer edge on your shoulders.   I had the later on my back plate and had to trim some off the side.

Thanks everyone! The collar plates and back have been stressing me out lately because that's really all that's left (plus the helmet)  so I'm glad they're okay and getting there :)  The back and shoulders definitely rub, but I do plan on trimming down the shoulder plates. I also plan on trimming just a little off the ab plate where the bottom of the chest meets.

Does anyone think that I need to bring up the back plate or is it in a good position right now? Like I said, the back is stressing me out lol

Your backplate sits about where mine does. It's on the low side but not in the realm of absolutely needing to come up, if it's shaped well now then I'd move onto trimming rather than start reshaping again.

Have it mounted up and someone use pencil to lightly trace how much the shoulders overlap the back. Trim just inside of that line. The front looks great.

Well in the week and a half that went by, I decided to completely redo the shoulders so that's why they are missing in these pictures!

So the spacing looks a little weird around the ab plate and chest plates, I think it's just the lighting. I zoomed in on my phone and the spacing looked about right. When I actually take app pictures, the lighting will be better!

I also think the lighting is playing tricks on my eyes in this picture; I believe the back plate is centered, I might not be fully turned and lighting issues. I will address this before app pictures however.

Getting so close! By my estimation, should be able to submit app pictures sometime next week!

There's some collar plate slippage with the upper and it looks like the bottom of the chest plates are floating away-- may need some extra security there. It's adding to the illusion the ab and chest plates are too far apart. Also your right knee plate is slightly skewed. Other than that I think it's coming along great!

Post by: Blackdugal on Oct 15, 2015, 04:38 PM
The only constructive thing I would say would be that when you have the person take your pictures to have them be square and level with you.  Example being your front facing pic, the person is taking the picture looking down on you so that as corriban pointed out it looks like the bottom of your chest plates are floating away but when you look at the side pics it doesn't appear that way.

^^^^ what Blackdugal said....have the pictures taken on the same level as your chest. Sounds weird, I know, but that will be the best angle (and keep you from looking like a bobble head  ;)  )

The kit im building for my wife i planned to leave pristine.  I found out very quickly after our first troop that it will be impossible getting in and out of your kit in public its gonna get worn and dirty! Like i said one troop and her plates are noticeable more scuffed. This is brought me to the conclusion that  having a pristine or clean or semi clean  kits is almost not feesable!

My wife soft good are all dark colours purples and black! So u with a white kit is gonna be really hard to keep looking fresh! If u want my opinion id weather the white.

After wanting her kit to look perfect im now thinking my preference has changed very very quickly. The dirty beat up kits look much better!

Just somthing to think about. Your kits will look great what ever u choose!

But What do I know ....  ;)

So I'm been slowing making some upgrades! I've bought some stuff to make new gauntlets and will hopefully be assembling them at my clans armor party this weekend! I've also ordered a new custome holster/ammo pouches/belt from Delta13. He sent some pictures and man are they beautiful! Can't wait to get it!

So that ends my happy news... This happened.  :-[  my bucket got knocked off a table. Range finder totally snapped.

I've temporary hot glued it back together because I may need it this coming Monday. But what should I do? I'm totally good with it not moving ever again but I'm sure there are better solutions than hot glue.

I definitely shall! I haven't noticed any major damage other than the range finder. It landed on a rug which is on carpeted floor so it cushioned the fall. Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't notice something else down the line O_O

I had my first bucket, an NME Assassin, resting on my head (bottom of the cheeks up on my forehead all tilted back like) and as I turned to look to the side it took a tumble onto a cement floor at a con, only a little paint chipping and minor cracking in the actual resin. Now I take much better care of my NME Merc.

Okay vode, I have a question for you all! Before my new belt, I had two separate belts: one to hold the holsters and one that held my Kama/ammo pouches. Now that I have an all in one belt, I'm not sure how to attach my current Kama. Originally I had belt loops that were the same size as my other belt but now the loops are too small plus there isn't space on the new belt.
Old setup:
Belt to hold holsters:
Overlapping belt with ammo/Kama:

So my question is: is there a way to attach Velcro to the underside of my new leather belt without ruining it? I'm thinking I can iron on some Velcro to my Kama but I'm sure that ironing Velcro to leather will destroy it and I don't really want to do that to my new belt. I'd like to be able to take the Kama on and off so that's why I want to use Velcro if possible... Please help? *insert puppy dog eyes*

My pouch belt and leather pouches are Delta13 and it was just a tad too long so I put some extra industrial sticky back velcro to where it would fir correctly and it hasn't had any signs of wanting to peel off.

I went with Velcro, so far it's doing well! Granted I'm just wearing it around my apartment and haven't taken it out on a troop yet lol so if Velcro fails me, another belt will do the trick like you said kris! :)

both 1/2s of my kama and my loincloth are all velcroed to my flight suit. And not overly well I might add (didn't do a very accurate job of placement). I've had almost no problems with any of them. I think I've had 1 corner of my right kama come loose 2x total so far. Having a belt over the top seems to help a lot.

Yeah I placed the Velcro on it (much like you not super accurately lol) and I definitely think the belt will help keep it in place!

Upgrade to my Kama! Sorta lol

Kinda bad lighting but I added the purple border to my Kama. Something relatively small, but I really like it :)

Next up, gauntlet upgrades!

Serious congratulations, vod!  That's awesome that you got your stripes.  Way to go!  And the new belt is pretty spiffy.  Good job there.  :D

So I have a new weapon! A thermal detonator!

Beginning
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u163/feeldaforce/Kryamla%20Redalur%20WIP/image_12.jpeg)

Painted
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u163/feeldaforce/Kryamla%20Redalur%20WIP/image_11.jpeg)

Net
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u163/feeldaforce/Kryamla%20Redalur%20WIP/image_10.jpeg)

I'm happy with the paint and such but I don't like the net and for the life of me I can't figure out how to make one. I've got a ton of white and purple paracord so if anyone has an idea of how to make a simple net... I really want my det to be visible and not in a pouch.

I couldn't find a rule saying otherwise, so sorry if I'm not supposed to have a link in my first post.

Here is a video on how to make a half-hitch based paracord net on Youtube: Hopefully it is what you're looking for.

Just finished going through the whole thread, it all looks great, excellent job!

My plan if I ever get any tdets was to strap them to a bandolier or something with a sort of 4 way holder. A strap around the middle, a strap around the bottom, and a strap that snaps so the det can be removed across the top. Could also do something like that

New gauntlets! Still working on the left gauntlet but the right is complete! It came with with bits to fill in little holes on top, but personally I like it without them. Anywho... Pictures!

New right gauntlet:

I know you can see my skin but I'll have my flight suit. Does this cause a problem? If so, I can put the little bits in the fill the little holes. Since they are 3D printed, I have to cover them in spot putty and then sand them down smooth. So much sanding... But worth it in the end I think! Will post the left when finished :)

I don't personally think the holes are a problem, but I honestly don't know if it'll fly, leaving them like that.  Sorry.  I really like the gauntlet, though.  Good on ya!

Post by: Kavryn Falco on Apr 14, 2016, 10:19 PM
I think you may need to fill them (not necessarily with what came with the gauntlets - a Sintra back would do just as well). I can see passthroughs being fine if the gauntlet was designed that way, but these holes are pretty clearly supposed to have things in them. It kinda looks unfinished as is ;)

That said, I do like them, and the paint scheme is pretty cool too. ;D

Yeah I thinking of just using a small piece of Sintra on the inside if I needed to :)

Thanks guys :) that'll be a quick fix!

Those gaunts look familiar....Good to see you're still keeping your Tra'cor roots strong!!  ;) (Literally half the clan has the same gauntlets right now)

They look good in purple. I like them, they're a sleek design to go with your kit.  :) I know Niyic added some old sprockets/springs ect. to his becasue he didn't like the darts that came with them....are you thinking of mod'ing them up later with spare parts?

They look good!

Thanks aria! I do have a boba rocket thing that came from Dha that I could mount on there and some little tubes that I picked up at Michaels for cheap but just haven't figured out how I'd like to mount them on yet. (Hopefully going for medic brigade once all my upgrades are "complete"). There's a little spot on that right on that I would like to cut out and put in a little video screen like you have kjeldo - so you're gonna have to show me how at an AP some time!

Upon further reflection, I added these little buttons but didn't add the little flares/darts that came with it. I think I'm going to eventually add some LED lights in those spots (hopefully sooner rather than later but I have a troop this weekend so probably not before then).

The left gauntlet is painted and weathered, just waiting for it to dry! Then, all I have to do is add the padding and viola! New gauntlets. Will hopefully post pictures of it tomorrow :)

Okay...well I tried to upload a picture of my left gauntlet to photobucket but it didn't it did not like it so...it is finished and when I don't feel like dropkicking photobucket (if only that were possible!), I'll upload a pic of it.

Anywho...I received this First Order blaster rifle nerf gun thing from an event host. I'm thinking that I would like to modify it for official use. Besides the obvious, what needs to be done? I know you're supposed to make it look not nerfy...but it doesn't look like a typical nerf gun since its meant to look like a star wars blaster already.

Also, sorry that these pictures are upside down, like I said, photobucket and I are fighting.

There a bit on the side that sticks out from where the mag or whatever goes in to feed the little nerf bullets. I'll need to cut that off and cover the hole with sintra probably

With Star Wars based guns you usually just have to disable them (if they're dart shooters), fill screw holes, and paint.

Well it's been a minute... Still not much progress on that blaster rifle lol one day.

But this post isn't about that. I've been thinking about redesigning my back plate. I love the way kavryn's and aria's segmented back plate... So I whipped up a quick paper template. Let me know what you think.

I'm thinking to maybe move the third plate down a bit and add a bit of a curve to the sides (similar to my backplate now) but this is just to get a rough idea.

I really like it i'm looking to do something like it for myself only split down the middle. However i think it looks a little wide on your back. On the last part at the bottom.
Title: Re: Kryamla's Armor - Now with Upgrades!
Post by: Malakier Vhett on Sep 10, 2016, 09:25 PM
Love the overall look! However...The bottom is gonna sit under your belts and dig into your back me thinks. I'd take about an inch, maybe 2 off the bottom of the top plate, and move the other 2 up accordingly. Might also trim it to follow the curvature of your body better, but that's personal preference.

Just my .002 cents

Post by: Aria on Sep 10, 2016, 09:26 PM
Good move.  ;)

It looks a touch wide to me, but that could also be the way the paper is sitting because it doesn't fold around us like sintra does when it is formed.
Title: Re: Kryamla's Armor - Now with Upgrades!
Post by: Kryamla Redalur on Sep 11, 2016, 12:01 AM
I agree; I do think it looks too wide too. And trim it up a bit and I'll post a new pic :)

9/11 edit:
Okay I trimmed it a bit width wise and shortened the second layer. Thoughts?

Thanks everyone! I finally shaped the cut out pieces now all that's left to do is some sanding and the painting! I have a troop this Saturday so it'd be great if I could get everything done by then but we shall see. My apartment building is undergoing some construction so I don't have any place outside to paint currently :(

Thanks everyone for the feedback! :)

So apparently I'm really bad at taking actual WIP pictures because well here is the almost finished back plate. Left to do:
Weathering
Attaching

Please keep in mind, it will be layered and not spaced. My paint is just drying at the moment :) there was some weird bubbling but nothing too major, and conveniently it happened in places that won't be visible when it's layered. And what is visible I'll turn into some weathering spots.

With flash:
