Title: Kurshi Be'Jahaal - Now Upgrades (Working Photos on Pg 21)
Post by: Kurshi BeJahaal on Mar 18, 2015, 08:35 PM
Edit 7/27/17
So here's where I'm at.

Ever since the Great Photobucket crash of 2017 I've been trying to restore photos and make this WIP usable for new Unofficial Members looking for a guideline. I'm slowly working on that as best as I can.

Here's my original concept:

And here's my finished kit:

So don't worry if things change as you go.  :D

Be flexible and have fun!
-------------------

Alright guys and gals, I need your help getting some things figured out. I'm colorbind, so I have no idea how to match colors appropriately. I'll tell you what I have in mind and maybe you can lend some suggestions! I'm thinking about doing a Mando thats located on a desert planet. Possibly Florrum or Ryloth. I envision that he's rugged, beaten up, and looks like hes had to improvise here and there to get the job done.

Now, I'd like the main color of my buy'ce and armor to be FDE (Flat Desert Earth). I'm obsessed with this color and OD Green. Haha. I'm also looking at getting a pair of Dickies coveralls. Should I go with a Khaki color or a Dark Navy Blue? I'm thinking either one could work, but Khaki may blend better for the environment. I was also thinking about doing a rust color and matte navy color for accent on my armor/buy'ce. I'm also considering using a pale yellow somewhere for very minor accents to help it "pop".

I have no clue if any of this goes together, but I need to make a decision so I can start getting it all together. I'm only locked into FDE being my dominant color. Anything else is entirely open to suggestion. Feel free to add your input, becase I DEFINITELY need some help!

Here's a link to the overalls that I'm looking at:

If you're going for the FDE I would suggest going with the khaki coveralls as they will match the FDE color scheme and desert theme too. But I think that the dark navy might work well if you're looking for contrast. This could definitely use a second opinion though

I'm definitely leaning toward the khaki color, but the blue MIGHT look okay if I weather it properly. Or would a charcoal or gray be a better choice? There's so many options right now!

And as always, thank you for your input, Vod!

My pleasure! And I believe that khaki color is the way to go but with a charcoal or gray vest, it would look perfect. Those would offer great contrast with the khaki and FDE color and will look great. You could also possibly make that vise versa. But I think that dark navy might be a stretch, although it could be done

If you want to go for the more earthy tones, I'd say stick with the khaki, although the navy blue could look pretty awesome in constrast (I'd weather it a ton if I were you if you went that route).  Grey just might not be enough in my opinion.

I think it's settled then. Gray vest and khaki jumpsuit. Time to get this ball rolling! Thanks fellas!

I think making it would be more cost effective. Right? Or do you know of one for sale at a good price?

My vest was home made and only cost us around $20 worth of material, and we ended up with enough duck cloth for a second vest. YOu can get vests at the supply depot http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?board=270.0 (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?board=270.0) and the ones I've seen have run in the $80-90 range.
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando Needs Advice!

The ones that I would trust buying are at around $80 ( I just put my order in for this one http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=50888.0).

Also, it all depends on your level of skill and confidence with being able to create one. I tried to make one and it failed drastically so I decided that for myself, it would be more cost effective and worth the price of buying a good, quality vest. However, if you have the skill, then by all means make it yourself and it will definitely be cheaper. From what I've seen and the vest that I've just ordered, duck cloths is the way to go. And I think this would work really well with your FDE color scheme, especially the black or gray. And duck cloth takes dye extremely well so you could dye it if need be. Also, it is relatively cheap. I know that Joann's Fabric sells it for $10.99 USD  for a yard of it. It doesn't sound like a lot of fabric but once they cut it, it is a good amount. I just got 2 yards last week and I can take a picture of that when I get home to show you what I mean. Also, if you get the Retail Me Not app on your phone or sign up on a computer and print out a coupon (not trying to advertise it, but it's helped me with cost), they offer a lot of great coupons for Joanns both online and in-store. As of now, they have a 40% off any regular priced item one that lasts until the end of May. I used that coupon and I only paid $13 for the two yards which is a great deal.

But anyway, it mainly depends on your skill

Oh heck yeah. I'm not too sure where my skill level is on a sewing machine, but I can learn! If all else fails, I know a few talented people. I wasn't sure if I should use duck cloth or like a pleather type material.

I tried to use pleather from Joann's to make mine. Cheaper and looks really cool but it's weaker than duck cloth. I would suggest duck cloth

And holy sweet Mandalore, is it sweaty!  My original vest out of marine vinyl was sturdy, but didn't breathe for anything.  It made trooping in the desert sun a small nightmare.

I got in touch with a local sign shop. They're giving me some sintra at $1.50 per square foot. How does that sound deal wise? I'm getting scraps of 3) 36 x 14 for $3.50 ech., 1) 10 x 14 for $1.45, 1) 11 x 19 for $2.18, and 1) 16 x 26 for $4.33.

I don't know sintra prices, but I'm not upset over it really. I'm just not sure what other people come across when dealing with their local stores.

Not sure how all of those add up space wise but those pieces sound as if you won't have enough space for a generic back plate, which is pretty big. Those pieces seem to be either too thin or too short to make it. But I know that I was able to get 5 2' by 4' sheets from Amazon for $50 and that's way more than enough for a kit, including any mistakes. They also sell packs of 3 2' by 4' sheets for $30 which is still more than enough. You might want to crunch the numbers and see what works best for you.

I wasn't going to do a backplate right out of the gate since I'd be utilizing a full cape or cloak and my back will be covered. I know it sounds like a cop out, but I promise that it's not the case. I think I'll do another build with one.  :)

Thanks again, vod! I'll TRY to get armor templates cut out and placed on me so that I can have their sizes judged. I think they'll be way too big at their current size.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that my templates need to be cut down by a good half inch all the way around? They seem way too wide. My finger is marking the location of my belly button for location reference.

First thing you need to do, join the Mando B.E.A.R.D.S society (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=66489.0)  ;D

As for the chest pieces, only trim those down along the far sides (ones pointing away from body) as they're a bit too wide. The collar looks a bit small, even when the chest pieces will be trimmed, but I might be wrong.  The edges of the collar should line up close with the edges of the chest pieces. The ab plate looks good in size but will need to be spaced more evenly on the fin parts as compared to the chest pieces. My suggestion would be to cut the fins of the ab plate at a steeper angle so it looks evenly spaced with the bottom of the chest pieces. Good luck!

THANK  YOU! I've been dying to figure out how to join the BEARD society!

And my body is shaped weird. Super broad shoulders, long torso, and a small Waist (I'm also 6'2"). I thought the ab plate was decent for my size, so I'll keep that and make the proper corrections. I should be picking up the sintra after work tomorrow, so I'm anxious to get my my plates properly sized!

Uh oh. The link is broken!
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando Needs Advice!
Post by: mobcake on Mar 26, 2015, 10:24 PM
That's strange. It works for me. Well if you go onto the forum main site, and then under "General Discussion" then "The Lounge" you should see "Social Societies". Click that and then scroll down from the main page until you find the "B.E.A.R.D.S..." thread. That should do it. But yeah, the ab plate looks spot on. The main thing you'll need to modify are the chest pieces, as I said before. And then from there make sure the collar fits and looks good. It doesn't have to be spot on, just close enough to not stand out as a major difference in size. A lot of problems occur when it comes to body sizes, lol. Everybody is unique so usually the Jango Templates require some sort of modification. Good luck with the sintra though, it's an awesome material to use. How do you plan on cutting it?

My buddy and I have snips as well as a dremel with a few cutting wheels. Do you have a recommended method for cutting 3mm? And as always, I VERY much appreciate your help. You've been a big part of everything that I've been working on. Your insight is much appreciated! One day I hope to share the knowledge I learn with upcoming shinies as they ask questions.
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando Needs Advice!
Post by: mobcake on Mar 26, 2015, 10:35 PM
No problem, vod. It really is my pleasure. I'm still learning a lot myself and there's a lot of people who I owe all of this information to as well. That's what I love about this community. Anyway, ditch the snips. Trust me, it's a flawed method, lol. Burned through a bit of sintra before I realized that that was not an option. I would stay stick with the dremel. If you have to, an x-acto knife or utility knife works too but for that, make several passes over an area or else the cuts will come out bad. For the dremel, it'll cut through it easily but make sure to cut a decent amount of space away from your line to give you some wiggle room. It can be easy to make a mistake and that extra space helps a lot. It can be sanded down later too and any finishing touches will take very little time
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando Needs Advice!
Post by: Kurshi BeJahaal on Mar 26, 2015, 10:51 PM
I think that I'll do the utility knife idea first and see how that works out. I was worried that the dremel may melt the sintra a bit, but cutting away from my lines will minimize mistakes and sanding will clean it up.

And apparently the BEARDs section is off limits to me for some reason. I found a link to the app page, but also found another fellow who couldn't view it either. hmm...

Here's the page.

I think I know the issue. I believe that you have to be an Auxiliary member in order to view the Social Societies page. I know that there are some pages and parts of the forums that those without an Auxiliary membership cannot access and these must be some of them. I think that the membership can definitely be worth it, though. It has for me at least

Auxiliary or an OM. Just forum members can't see certain boards.

Like your concept, and can understand your problem in coordinating colors. My sister is colorblind to green and purple.

And being colorblind makes everything difficult. Haha.

Some progress was made today with the armor planning! I used my old chest templates and scaled them down by a half an inch on the outside and then traced them on some posterboard (some call it cardstock, correct?). Then I modified everything from there on one big sheet so that I could ensure proper spacing. Here's what I came up with.

Next it was time for the test fitting. The thicker paper does not contour my body very well, but I think sizing and spacing look good. I'd like to get a yes or no from some of you before I start cutting up sintra though!

The spacing between plates is about a quarter of an inch. I should have darkened the negative space to make it more visible. Let me know what you think!
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando Needs Advice!
Post by: mobcake on Mar 28, 2015, 12:04 AM
Those are some extremely precise templates, vod! I think that's a really good idea though to get a good picture of placement and spacing, I'll probably use that for idea for a second kit whenever I make one, lol. But I think the chest pieces might be a bit too wide. It doesn't look like much but I still get that feel from looking at them. Maybe a quarter inch off the sides at the most from each chest piece. I might be wrong though because they might not be conforming entirely to your body the way the actual sintra will since it's all one large piece of paper. I think the rest looks pretty spot on. Keep up the awesome work!
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando Needs Advice!
Post by: Kurshi BeJahaal on Mar 28, 2015, 12:31 AM
I have slight OCD and have to make sure everything is perfect! I know spacing seems to be one of the biggest issues with armor fitting. It seems like improper spacing can lead to improper sizing. I thought this might help keep that issue to a minimum since I know they fit together like puzzle pieces! But I'm thinking they look wider in the picture than they did in the mirror when I was checking them out from different angles. I'll maybe cut them out and fit them individually next time.

I'd just trim about a 1/4" off the sides; otherwise, it looks spot on! I'm borrowing this idea for my next set. :D

I'm not sure about Pattern/Style. Although there is a tutorial under the tutorial section. So I finally have a potential color scheme. I had to do it in paint so that I could google the colors I was wanting and apply them to my mando. You'll notice there's no shading or anything like that. But this is what I've come up with. If it's a terrible color scheme for a Mando on Ryloth, just tell me haha. The only thing I've committed to is I have the Navy Blue duck cloth for the vest now. I am open to all suggestions!

Duck cloth is easy to dye so you don't have to be entirely committed to it. But I think that the colors definitely match Ryloth pretty well, especially the skin tones of a lot of Twi'leks. I'm also excitied to see how the arrows will look on the chest plate. Pretty sick color scheme

You'd have to check the CRL's, but I thought that they could, as long as they match the asthetic of the whole kit.  Don't quote me on it, though.

They can but as Straka said, they have to fit with the kit. Also, make sure that you only use 1. I've seen other people try to use more and they've got their apps declined or people told them not to use the less important one. It makes it look too earth. But as long as it fits with the overall aesthetic of the kit, then you should be fine. I would post this in the Mandalorian Q & A section though to get an answer from the app team

So I think I have my armor templates sized properly. They're
a tad bit crooked but I think you'll get the idea. My finger is at my belly button. I have a LONG torso and big pecs, so I had to make sure the plates were shaped around me okay. They were cut for a friend but didn't fit her and seemed to be perfect for me. What say you, Vode? Can I move forward with putting the temps on sintra?

Size wise, it's looking pretty good, although in my opinion adding some more space between the plates would be a good idea, as it'd bring them closer to your navel, which is what you're shooting for on terms of the ab plate's lower alignment.

I'd add a bit more to the bottom, yes.  By comparing mine to yours, I'd say you need another inch or so.  Adding material to the top would mess up the spacing for the other plates.  Since I have somewhat similar torso proportions to you, I'd say let it sit just a bit above your navel, you don't need it there precisely.  Here's how my chest plates sit on me for a reference (albeit a mid build one).  Damn, I was out of shape six months ago haha

Can't wait to meet you at clan gatherings!  What's your kit completion goal?

I see what you did with yours! That's a nice looking kit!  I added some more length to mine. Any trimming can be fine tuned in the sanding phase. As before, my finger is at my navel.

Eventually I'm going to go for a desert environmental specialists on Ryloth. I think I'm going to stick with a medium armor build. I'll be eventually doing a long sniper build as well. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting to meet you and the others as well!

Sorry for my delay in replying. I spent ALL DAY making my dumb vest. I learned one thing today. I HATE making vests. Haha. The sewing part wasn't bad, but making the vest fit right was a pain in the shebs.

The greeble part I was working on in that picture was originally a portable air compressor that you plug into your car's power jack. It got broken and I found it in my basement and decided to take it apart. I forgot to grab a picture of it today since I was consumed with the vest!

Here's where I ended up as of tonight. I'll get my plates on the vest this week and get the okay to move forward.
I added a zipper to help get it on and off.

I also added darts/panels in the back to snug it up around my midsection.

The next step will be adding the half sleeve type shoulder parts for my shoulder bells. I'm forgetting what their called at the moment!

Any advice or critique is welcomed! This was my first time touching a sewing machine in 12 years or more. I have ZERO real experience on one.

Thanks, Vode! I don't know how well dying the Navy would work. I figured the vest would be a nice accent on my khaki flights it and contrast my Flat Dark Earth chest plates. My only concern now is that the Navy would keep me from getting approved for desert ops environmental specialist brigade after becoming an OM. I'm certainly up for suggestions. I really hope I never have to make another vest again. EVER. Hahaha.

You're actually very right about the color choices. The navy will accent the desert colors perfectly. I don't think you'll have a problem with that on the application

I'm going to second going with the navy.  It'll look awesome, and you don't typically see many colored vests, which will make you stand out in a good way.

Just be glad you didn't have to sew leather.  I like my vest, but I might move to duckcloth soon myself due to breathe ability and ease of maintenance.

I was considering leather. My dad has a TON of leather and I could have had him help me with a vest. But I really wanted to give it a go on my own for my first try. :)

Some progress was made tonight! I got the plates cut. They still need trimmed and sanded down. Especially my ab plate. I need to trim a quart of an inch off of it, easily. My left chest plate is also bent too much. I'll fix that next time I hit the armor. Aside from those issues, how am I looking on my sizing?

You're looking good vod!  Only thing I can think of is to make sure to have a bit more space between your plates so everything lines up on the outside, it looks like you can afford it.  From what I can see, you probably wouldn't have to cut your collar plate all the way to those lines you've drawn.

And I was worried that I was going to need to cut them down some. I was thinking they might be a little too wide across my chest. I'll space them a bit further and see how that looks. I realized that I forgot my diamond between the chest plates. Oops!

Well... Update... I had a wasted night. I've been trying to contour my plates to form fit against my large pecs. It's been a huge struggle... And then I realized I didn't need to do that because they rest fairly flat against my vest.

What a dingus... So tomorrow, they'll be fixed and I'll check my sizing and Spacing with the trimmed and sanded pieces.

I made the same mistake when shaping all of my torso plates. I shaped them before I even had the placement down and that was a huge mistake considering the fact that their metal. But a couple hours of reshaping fixed them all up. Like Zekk said, Sintra is great with its forgiving qualities

Thankfully you gents are right. I heated my plates and bent them back to normal and then gave them a good sanding. I had left a black outline on the plates from my marker so that I could sand it off and give it a proper rounded look.

After that was all finished, I got them laid out a little better with tape. I noticed they still need a bit of forming to contour to my chest a little better, but I think the spacing is pretty good.

You can see that my collar plate drooped a little here. The tape slid a little.

A lot was accomplished at our clan armor party. I got my gaunts cut from PVC, my backplate traced and cut (plus my accessories for it figured out.  ;)), and all of my hard parts on sintra. Throughout this week I'll be cutting and sanding all these and shaping them. Talk about an awesome time!

Here's my unshaped backplate.

Aaaaaand here's my homework for the week.

I forgot to get a picture of my gaunt process, but I cut them from PVC, then cut them in half. I then made a small gradual cut to make the gaunts taper as the go troy forearm to wrist. I hope to get shot of those along the way!

Haha. Thanks everyone. I've been playing around with some ideas for what I want my backplate to look like and I've come up with a few different ways of laying out the same thing. Here's what I'm thinking. Now I won't be using that guitar pedal, but making something similar size and shape with knobs.

This has been my original idea. I'd shorten the PVC, repaint the gauge or replace it with an LED or something, run the tube to my helmet, and repaint it all to blend.

But I also kind of like these ideas too. This one appears to have the faceplate connected to the PVC tube, making it look like a system of some sort. The guitar pedal (or sintra box) would have a metal wire harness going from it to the PVC as well.

And then there's this way which I like as well.

Which idea appeals to you all the most? Or which one looks more like it actually serves a purpose versus just being all stuck together for the heck of it?

Haha hey! Thank you! You're never too late to the party here. My progress is always slow moving thanks to my OCD (and colder weather lately). I definitely appreciate the input. Three used to be my least favorite idea, but now it's growing on me!

Im hoping to get all of my hard parts cut put this weekend. I think I only have the knees left. But I also want to draw and cut plates for my hands and top of my boots. THEN I'll get to shaping everything!

Actually, I got to thinking... I found some gloves that may work for "armored" hands as well. These gloves apparently have a hard plastic backing on them. So if I remove the logo and repaint the back of the hands would these work? If not, no big deal!

According to the CRLs:

So as long as you get that brand off of there, you're good!

I made a teeny bit of progress tonight. I shaped my backplate a little bit and tested out my primer, silver and base color on some sintra scraps. I was told not to mix brands but I don't think any of them are lacquer based. The backplate isn't 100% how I like it, but it's not too far off. Opinions are welcome! Backplate looks good so far! They're hard to get to fit perfectly, but it looks like you've got a really good start.
And yeah, I'm liking the colors. Can't wait to see the whole thing painted.

A big thank you to everyone for giving your opinion and input! It is GREATLY appreciated! It's good to know that I'm on the right track so far. And here I was thinking the backplate was going to be too difficult. I almost decided to skip it and go the Cape route.

And I checked my paint today. The brown rustoleum didn't set like I had hoped. It was still tacky over my krylon silver. Looks like I need to find a similar color in the krylon brand and try again. I used dark taupe, I believe.

Yep, mixing paint brands generally does not work.  I was about to point that out, but it looks like you figured it out yourself.  I'm curious, have you decided on a pattern yet?

Alright. New plan everyone. I can't find a brown that I like from krylon. I already have krylon primer down on my plates and don't know if I should strip it and damage my sintra. Even if I can strip it safely, I'm actually more excited about my new idea. So here it is...

I'm thinking about doing a hostile environment theme. Most likely a Raxus Prime themed paint scheme. That will incorporate my backplate idea pretty well I think. I want to keep my red oxide krylon and use that maybe as my main color. Will my Navy vest still work? I'd like to think so. But my original dilemma of compatible colors comes back into play.

What flight suit color and accent colors should I add to this new kit? I'm thinking of eventually tying in a Mandalorian Protectors idea with the goal of a hostile environment brigade.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Navy goes pretty well with most shades of red, especially deeper ones.  When you say "red oxide" are you talking about the rust protection paint?  Cause that shade should go with navy quite nicely.  For your flightsuit I would probably go with tan or charcoal gray, but for sure a neutral colour since you will be using two colours.  You could do your accents in navy to match the vest or pretty much any neutral colour, black might be nice.  All that said, it's your kit, so think about how you want everything to fit together!  :D  I hope this helps some   :D

I was about to say the same.  Go for it vod!

Since you're going for hazardous environment now, perhaps you could add a second gas mask style hose to your helmet.

Awesome! You guys are the best! I'm thinking that I like those ideas. Tan flight suit, Navy vest, red oxide for my main color and then Navy and like an orange yellow type color for accent? Since I can't quite tell what colors I'm looking at, I had to ask what colors are most predominant on Raxus Prime. That's how I thought maybe the orange yellow color might be okay too.

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it!

That sounds good to me!

Whenever I picture kit colors like that, I kinda see a crazy stripe pattern going on, especially if it's for camouflage reasons.

Orange-yellow should fit in nicely, just don't use a shade that's really bright and you should be good!

Lol Zekk, are we going to be seeing a rainbow tiger mando soon?   :P

hah, well not exactly.  The blue could be used for the details such as the visor color, shoulder bells, and cheeks.

But yes, vertical tiger stripes please!
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando's Armor WIP
Post by: Kurshi BeJahaal on May 03, 2015, 10:24 PM
Haha. I'm not sure if I'm real crazy about vertical tiger stripes! But I DID get a little bit accomplished today. I tried my paints on another scrap piece of sintra. They're layered grey primer, silver, and then my red oxide. I'll show you how it turned out. I also gave my first attempt at some battle damage. I used a toothpick to spread some toothpaste on the silver. And we'll, you know how it's done. So here's what I came up with.

I took two shots. One on a darker background and one on a lighter background.

And then I ran a line of Navy on the base color.

I didn't have time to blackwash anything, but I'm happy with this so far. I'm still trying to find a good orange/yellow that I like. But that's what I managed to accomplish today Haha.

Your weathering technique is pretty on point.  The only other thing I'd suggest is to sand the edges of the plates to make them look a bit worn down.  I think the yellow/orange will bring the whole scheme together pretty nicely.

Thanks! This wasn't an actual plate. Just a scrap I had lying around. My plates are all smooth and slightly rounded on the edges. I wanted everyone's opinions because I have someone that seems to think that the navy does not fit at all. Do you see a problem with it?

It depends on where you'd put it.  I'd use it sparingly, like how Boba uses yellow in two or three places on his kit, personally.  As long as your primary colors are orange and oxide it should fit well.

Thanks Vode! After the gym tonight I'm HOPING to get the rest of my armor shaped so I can get this rolling. I'm having difficulty finding a proper shade of yellow with Krylon paints, so I may have to do a few light layers of both yellow and orange to give the right look.

Unless metallic gold would look okay, then I could use that instead. I hate this colorblind thing. Every color looks good together through my eyes Haha.

Well... I've found gloss pumpkin orange Haha. That's all the luck I've had this far. But I've got a progress report! I got my knees and shins done as well as most of the armor shaped!

I put real damage on the shin plates. I need to do the same to the knees.

I also unintentionally roasted my shoulder bell. Oops! Blaster damage anyone?

Also wondering if I should keep the idea going on my shoulders that did with my shins and knees? That raised piece that will get glued on top?

And finally here's my kit spread out. So close to being done! The buy'ce still needs work, but that'll come in time. And my gaunts aren't pictured because they're still rough.

I like the idea of the raised strip continued on your shoulders, I think that will draw the whole kit together and make it look even more awesome. Love the weathering....the blast damage is very authentic looking! haha!

I'm having trouble finding the right yellow/gold color too, so maybe it's just a plot against mandos....but I was able to talk to a 'paint manager' person at menards the other day who told me they can order in a color for me, it'll just cost an arm and a leg. I don't know if that's something they do at all stores or just my local store, but you could check it out.

Thank you! That's kinda what I'm thinking. Every place I can do it online wants me to order cases of six. There's no way I need six cans!

Thanks! The more realistic the better in my opinion! And what specific color are you looking for? I was thinking of going with krylon's sunrise yellow, but I'm not sure if that's a good color or not. Krylon makes a pale yellow called "bright idea" that I like, but I don't think it'll tie in with my color scheme very well. I think a special order is the best bet for me as mandos you know, since the world hates us and all!

And in other news, I got my gaunts cut, shaped and sanded. This would have been done yesterday, but like a dumb dumb, I used the same template for both arms... And... Well... I ended up with two left gaunts. I didn't notice this until I was done for the night and getting ready to sand them down. So, defeated and frustrated I went home. I fixed them today though!

They'll eventually get fastened together with piano hinge.

Looking good! I like the square-ish look you've been doing to your armor - most kits I've seen are pretty rounded, so it stands out.

Paint color - mostly I'm trying to find something that matches my yellow/gold on my soft parts. I'm between the krylon yellow sunrise and their gold-ish color (forget what it's called) but neither one quite match, so I may have to special order in a color. Got to be perfect, you know!

So all of my upper body plates need reshaping. Apparently, taking the gym seriously has been paying off. I think I'm going to use my crappy homemade vest for now, until I can get a better one made. I've got an idea for my left gaunt using the housing of an old guitar pedal. It'll be my comms gaunt, but I've got a few questions about it before I get cracking on it. I'll get some pictures up soon and get a few opinions!
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando's Armor WIP
Post by: Kurshi BeJahaal on Dec 06, 2015, 12:29 AM
So I'm staring at an old guitar pedal and thinking, "Where can I put this on my kit?" And it comes to me... A comms device for a gaunt! So I tore it apart and got this.

I think I need to fit it down in my gaunt a little, because I don't like how much it sticks out on the top.

But I think in doing so it will look pretty good when I repaint it, add the knobs back on top and put some buttons down in the sunken in part. Don't worry, I'll grind off the raised "BOSS" logo there!

So this will probably be my next task after I fit my plates to my body once again. It seems a little challenging, but I don't think it will be too terrible

I primed mostly all of my armor tonight. I need to reshape my backplate and I'm not sure if I should shape it before I prime it. I don't know if the heat will affect the base coat, so I'm playing it safe and waiting. Since it's cold out, I had to do a few pieces at a time and bring them in to stay warm. I think I went in and out of my apartment about twenty times or more. But they're done!

I also will be having a vest made for me (if I get a few extra dollars this Hanukkah season 8)) that far surpasses my craftsmanship! Some of you may have actually ordered a vest from K'raam Xrati also. Needless to say that I'm excited once again. Seeing those plates turn grey really gave me a little boost! If weather permits, I'll try to get some silver on them next.

The piano hinge that I ordered is on its way and should arrive tomorrow. I'm really excited to see my left gauntlet get finished. Anyway, here's a quick shot of everything on my kitchen floor. Keep in mind, my chest plates have been done for... Ohhh... I don't know... Six months? The helmet needs bondo and sanding. I'm NOT really thrilled for that.

I like that 'comm' device. I agree it's a bit tall. if you cut out the front and back sides in a circular shape (to match your gauntlet) you can probably drop it down to an acceptable height and save yourself some bondo work.

Also in case you didn't realize it you need to have at least 1/3 of the vertical part of the visor visible. It doesn't look like you have quite enough right now.

Glad to help! If you want you can cut bits out of the lower part similar to how the executioner helmet has it. The executioner is considered the minimum amount of visor visible that we allow.

That's kind of the idea I was playing off of. I love that helmet, but couldn't afford it so I thought I'd attempt to do something similar. This is no sweat, I've got something in mind but I'll take a peek at the executioner again.

Just to double check, all pockets must be removed and side pockets must be sewn shut, correct? Has anyone ever used these suits and if so, what are your thoughts? I'm tall, but I think these will just barely work.

Anything that is visible must be modified to non standard pockets. If it's under the flak or a kama then you are good. The patch (buttcheck) pockets should be removed and inset (hip) pockets closed. Great Hannukah gift to get.

Well, some progress was made today. I fiddled around with my gaunts for a bit, cut the T deeper in my helmet, cut some more layers for the cod, and practiced a little Mando'a!

I cut a slot from my sintra to allow the comms device to sit down into the gauntlet.

It's a slow process but it's something. Now will this be deep enough to pass? And what are your thoughts on the grill idea for the buy'ce?

The pic of your bucket isn't loading.... :(

Gaunts look cool....you gonna add some bondo to the sides to smooth them in a little bit?

Weather's been fun up here for working on kits too. I've made a sanding nest out of a tarp and my living room for the past few days.

Fixed it! Thank you! Yeah, the weather has not been cooperative for any outdoor work and I don't have a garage, so I'm kinda stuck. I definitely plan on slapping bondo on those gaunts to smooth it out but I'm not sure doing it inside is such a good idea. Most of my plates are ready for paint as well. So until I can borrow a garage, I'm doing what I can.

Here's an update on my left gauntlet topper. It needs painted and a few things added still, but unfortunately that's the second digital picture keychain that I've bought that doesn't power on.

Also while moving some stuff around I found my old pellet gun and a scope from my first .22 rifle. I think I've got the base for a blaster! Anything I need to do to render it inoperable before using it?

And tonight I made a trip to the hardware store and I gathered up the PVC needed to finish my oxygen scrubber/O2 tank. It's still rough and nothing is epoxied together yet. Here's what I've got:

I'll be running a hose (or two) from the scrubber to the bucket too. I'll be trying for the hazardous environment brigade after reaching OM status. Little steps!

I like the empty/full meter in the pack. The whole things looks sweet.

As far as the bucket, you might want to cut just a bit more off to be on the safe side. Are you going to put your visor behind the grill? That would be cool.

Thank you!  And Yes ma'am! The visor will go behind the grill and I'll be cutting it down just a bit more to be safe.

And my vest came in from K'raam Xrati. When I him get a hand, I'll get my plates lined up and attached to the vest. I'm way more excited than my face shows by the way Haha.

Good looking vest! Take your time with the plates and remember the useful tip to lightly trace the plate shape onto the vest with pencil before attaching. It helps in the long run!!  Also if you need to don't be afraid to get a tape measure out to space the plates...I've done that a few times in the past months spacing plates for my clan mates.

Yeah....I always look "thrilled" in my pictures too. We mandos just don't show outward excitement well, I guess. Haha!

It's been a good weekend. A good bit of progress was made thanks to a break in the freezing temperatures.I finally got my backplate shaped exactly how I want it and ready to add my scrubber contraption to it. I was happy to be able to get silver down on a majority of my plates and start the main color coat on my chest. I used toothpaste as my masking fluid for weathering. I want to wash it all off and see what I've got, but I think I'd like another layer or two of paint before I do that. The shoulders didn't get finished because it started to rain as I was spraying my first coat on them. I'll try to finish both of these Tuesday when we have another nice day.

I was also able to make some headway with my blaster. The other side isn't entirely finished yet. But overall, I'm happy with what I got done today. I was hoping to start bondo, but the rain put a damper to that. (ha get it?)

For the record, I'm extremely nervous to try to put my plates on. I'm really afraid I'll mess it up. I'd like another OM to help with the whole ordeal, but I'm pretty far from the entire clan. I'm basically in the outer rim. And that's warrior in us. You can't tell when we're going to buy you a soda or punch you in the face. We keep it interesting haha!  :P ;D

Yeah, I hear ya. I was so nervous the first time...Everyone seems to be!! I've tried to help out the UM's up here when they need help plate spacing. I'm getting kinda good at it!  :P
I advise having at least one other pair of eyes there to help make sure things are straight and even, even if they're not a merc or costuming person. The outside opinion helps!
Start with the collar plate and work down. Take everything off and try it again if you have to.
Haha, that's probably it. We're just too successful a the warrior pokerface.

Here's an update on the beginning stages of weathering and damages effects. I'm worried that I may have put too many scratches and dings. If so, I might sand over a few spots and put some paint back on. Yah or nay?

I'll be doing the red oxide for my main colors. Then I have navy and pistachio for accent colors. I'm just not real sure which of those colors is going where yet I was thinking about navy knees and gaunts with the pistachio accents on my red, but I'm not sure yet.  ???

With a good black wash, those damage marks will look just fine.  Should see some kits out there, so dirty, you can't tell what their main color is!

I love the mythosur skull. That looks awesome. The rest of the damage looks pretty good...if I look at it a while it does look a little planned, but that's just my personal opinion. You could always take more off or put more on if you don't like it after you get OM.

Also, just a thought, but maybe think about navy on the red oxide, just to keep you from looking like a Christmas-themed mando?  Of course, if you have heavy weathering planned you will probably look fine.  :)

I definitely went a little wild with the dings and scratches. I may fill in a few, but I really want to give the appearance that I've been to Raxus Prime and back... Twice. Haha. So definitely major weathering. And don't worry. There will be navy on the plates. As a Messianic Jewish Mando, I definitely want to avoid the Christmas themed look Haha!  :P

Thank you both! That means a lot. Thanks for reading through all of our conversations and my brainstorming ideas. I'm glad you didn't lose interest. This kit has been changing ever since I planned it. It's evolved beyond what I had expected. And as my first costume, I've gained a little confidence and challenged myself along the way. So thank you again! I'd like to check out your WIPS as well!

Here's what I accomplished today. Major scuffs everywhere. As Ariarenee said, it may be excessive. But I plan on blackwashing the heck out of these plates too. I'm not sure if I should keep it, or fill some in! I'll see how the shoulders look and go from there.

Blackwash or fake rust effect were my options. I used a few more layers of paint to get the dents seem deep, so I asked out of mere curiosity!

Don't worry about the weathering, once you scratch everything up and add the blackwash it will all fit together perfectly :D  Of course it is all based on personal preference though, do whatever makes you happiest with your kit

Not much news, but I put everything on and got an idea of sizing and spacing. It kinda gives me a visual of where I'm at in the process. I think I need to trim around the wings and ab plates, but other than that, I may be okay.

Things I still need to acquire/make:
-Girth belt
-Belt for ammo pouches
-2 leather holsters
-Ammo pouches (2 on the way)
-Boot armor
-Thigh and bicep armor (will complete after getting OM status)

After seeing my scratch build helmet on in "full kit" I DEFINITELY need to trim around the bottom. It looked too small originally, so I added a bit for length. And now it looks stupid. Haha.

I'm going to redo my paint because I'm not happy with the weathering I've attempted. I've seen some great kits and been given a little insight on how those kits were weathered. There's still plenty more to do, like finish my scrubber on the backplate, bondo EVERYTHING,  tailor my suit, and refit some of my plates. My backplate really needs to be widened out a little. That looks terrible too Haha.

But here we are. Comments and suggestions are encouraged!

Everything is looking good vod!  Aside from the things you have mentioned, I would also recommend trimming the two "tabs" on the ab plate a little so they line up better with the edges of your chest plate.  And I have a question as well: do you plan on adding "keyhole" slots on the back of you bucket?  I find they can help a bit with hearing, and on windy days allow a space where a bit of cool air can get in.

Got it! Will the current "chips" in the paint show through and make the new paint look pitted? If so, that may be cool and give it even more effect. I was thinking doing silver, black, and then the red with either navy or pistachio accents.

Good call! I missed that. I'll definitely get those trimmed up! I left everything big in case I needed to do a little trimming. We all know it's easier to trim than to add!

And I wasn't planning on adding keyhole slots, but it may be a good idea. I have zero plans or have thought very little into ventilation and hearing for my bucket. I'll take your advice and cut some in! Thanks Evaarla!

If it goes, that would look really cool with a good black wash, assuming you want your kit really weathered.

You guys already hit most of the things I'm seeing. Only thing I can point out off the top of my head is that you may want to form the backplate shoulders a little more to you - they're popping up slightly right now. Might be fixed when you permanently attach them to the vest. I would double check when you do get it attached. We had a couple guys get hit with that in pre-app.
Otherwise, looking good!  :)

Ugh yes. The backplate is one of my toughest parts to shape. I definitely know that I'll be spending plenty of time reshaping that. I can't get it to contour to my back correctly. I have a wide back and more narrow towards the midsection. Shaping is a pain for that, but I'll get it hopefully.

Backplates are tough. They're hard to get perfect, even if you have experience working with them. I'd definitely try to get someone from the clan to help you out with that if you can. I know you're a ways away from everyone, but it will be easier on you if you have an extra hand.
Did you use a template form or custom one?

I believe I used a template. I'll just definitely need someone who knows what they're supposed to look like to give me a hand. I spent a little time fine tuning my backplate attachment and I think I've settled on what I've come up with.

I used a fan or something for the part you see up close in the last picture. Of course everything needs bondo and glued and stuff, but you get the idea. Not pictured is the hose that will run from my scrubber to the back of my helmet.

As stated, I wasn't happy with my weathering. It looked like bird poop to me haha. Sooooo I repainted everything back to metallic silver and then started to add my black layer over some of the plates. I still plan on doing the red top color, but seeing my last attempt helped me realize that my plates lacked a little something. I also made sure not to mask so many little dings and scratches this time. I've got a few good sized spots and a small scuff here and there that will show through to the silver, but not like last time. Having the black layer between silver and red will allow for more realistic looking scuffs and scrapes I believe.

I took Kavryn's advice and didn't sand down the plates that I had previously weathered. Sure enough the little scuffs and scratches show through and give everything a little more depth. It looks almost as if it were passed down to Kurshi Be'Jahaal and he repainted it and made it his own. I think I'm going to be much happier this time around. So I sincerely thank everyone for their guidelines, wisdom, and tips that have helped me get this far! Here's just a few updates.  :)

Back to square one. Oh, ignore that unpainted shin. I took care of it haha.

Two types of weathering here. Toothpaste and the salt technique. Much less silver will be exposed this time.

The previous attempt at weathering is showing through. I can dig it.

Thank you, Vode! And as Aria stated, I HAVE taken advantage of our warmer but very windy weather! I got a little more done and applied my topcoat. I'm still not 100% in love with the weathering, but I like it way better! I plan on adding a stripe or some sort of accent color on each piece and blackwash everything still, so it's not finished. I think I went a bit overboard on the exposed silver on the cod.  :-\ I can always add black acrylic over some of the "bare plate" that's exposed. We'll see what happens with it.

Here's my corrosion burn aka a heat gun being left too close. Haha. I used the salt weathering here. It didn't do exactly what I thought it would, but it's alright I guess.

I think the cod plate looks good. Maybe if you think it's too much do a black wash, like you said, or leave the accent stripe off it?

Either way, looking good!

Don't forget to give it a few smaller scuffs and such with some light sandpaper passes before you blackwash.

That's reassuring! Thanks everyone! Next week is looking like decent weather for some more painting here! I'll probably add our clan logo to one of my shoulders and hit my chest plates with the first layer of black. I'd also like to get my plates secured to my vest this week if at all possible.

I've thought about hitting these plates with sand paper, but I'm kind of unsure as to how to go about it. I did it on my collar plate before I repainted it and it didn't look very good. Should I use a fine grit paper or a more coarse one?
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando's Armor WIP
Post by: Kris Jasra on Mar 02, 2016, 06:09 PM
I use a course grit to give just a couple of bigger scuffs and a lighter grit for a few more.
Do not rub at it as if you are trying to remove the paint. You want to start the sweep with the paper and run it across the plate surface as if you've turned around and scraped against a wall. That would give a line of really shallow score marks. Without the wash the sandpaper marking should be near invisible I've found. Only once the wash is on and it settles into the little score marks do they truly show up.
I tend to keep the sandpaper to boots, shins, knees, gauntlets and shoulders for the main part as they are most likely to brush against something, although I put a few on my chest and backplates. Avoid the cod - if you've been scratching your cod like that then you may have some explaining to do :P

Oh my gosh hahahaha. I laughed out loud when I read that! But I definitely see what you're doing with the scuff marks. Thank you for that! I'm trying to think of what would actually cause that mark and why it is where it is. I want to keep the weathering as believeable as possible. Not just scuffing and scratching it up for the heck of it. I thought about that after doing my cod, but oh well, no big deal!

I wonder why more people don't think of that everytime I see a loin cloth with holes in that are right up the top or a cod plate with huge amounts blaster marks and all my mind says is - dude, you really annoyed somebody...

Well, my job and busy life has not been cooperative lately. Working an hour and a half from home takes it out of you. But I managed to get some more painting on my plates. I'm also going to. Be adding darts to my knees, so that is kinda slowing down progress.

I started adding my very top accent color today, I'm pretty stoked on that!
Pre paint
(http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/Riley_knows/Mando%20Mercs/IMG_20160315_185915337.jpg)

And paint. I decided to add pistachio as my accent color. I don't know if it looks good to anyone else, but it's on there now. Haha!

I'm hoping to wash it off tomorrow and get a decent picture of it. I was planning on doing navy on the shoulders as my top color with a pistachio colored Rancor clan logo over one side and a mythosaur over the other, but I messed up and did one shoulder with pistachio stripes instead of the Navy. Idiot. But I guess I might just do that for the other shoulder and leave this one the odd one out. Thoughts?

Randomly not matching bits on kits are sometimes the best. As my Alor'ad is fond of telling us, he has a lime green stripe on his bucket (other wise gray) and one red knee. One shoulder bell is orange. It works.
So I'd say see how you like it, it might turn out pretty cool.  :)

Also, for a minuet I was confused about why you'd painted newspaper on your shin....  :P

Well, I'm not too upset with my final layer on my plates! I took the tape off tonight and cleaned them up and here's what I got:

I'm definitely happier with the looks of the shoulder over the shin. But I still want to hit it with some sandpaper and blackwash it. So far so good!

One step closer! I finished the chest area (minus the ab plate) today!

And without the backplate in the picture I'm SLOWLY and meticulously working my way forward.

I still have so much more to do unfortunately. But I think the weather is finally on my side. Tomorrow I plan to finish the last bit of bondo to the knees, add the accent color to my other shin, cod and shoulder bell, bondo and sand the helmet and gaunts. I'm expecting to be off work early for once, so let's keep our fingers crossed. I've got a deadline to shoot for! I'm shooting to be in kit for the Motor City Con on May 15th.

UPDATE 3-18

i managed to get my stripes on the other shoulders as well as a bunch of other stuff done. I'll be doing my rancor logo in pistachio on the plate with blue stripes and a blue mythosaur on the other. I'm very satisfied with the way these are turning out!

Thank you Aria! I ALWAYS look forward to hearing your thoughts and reading your encouragement! I'm remaining hopeful to troop with you and your clan this May!

Finally I can report some progress!! Woohoo!! I got my knees done! At first attempt I hated the weathering on my right knee. (coincidentally the knee armor on the right side of the picture.) I went way overboard with it and it just didn't look realistic.

I sprayed enough paint in a spare plastic cup to pool up and dipped my paintbrush in and fixed it by hand. I covered up some of the excessive and obnoxious scratches. Then I used black acrylic to sharpen the edges up and viola! Good as new! I'm quite happy with my results. Much more believable too.

My gauntlets are getting some attention once again too. I've got this one about ready for paint and final greebles. Like a dingus I forgot to put the silver down and some masking fluid BEFORE spraying on my black layer.  ??? It's crunch time to get this thing done and approved before Motor City Con and I'm just getting ahead of myself. My OCD is really keeping me from making too much progress in a day though. Everything has to be done right or redone.

The buy'ce is getting close to being ready to paint too. After many bondo/sand/spot glaze/sand attempts, it's smoothing out pretty nicely. I'm still not happy with the helmet and want to buy a bucket sometime down the road, but I just can't afford it right now. So until then, I'll make due with my scratch build. I'm pretty proud of it, but it's not as "clean" looking as I'd like.

Not pictured accomplishments are some progress on my other gauntlet and my backplate attachment. When it's anything worth showing, I'll be sure to share!

It's soon pretty!!!! I love the new weathering. You're going to look amazing! I can't wait to see it in May.  :D

Thank you! I'm much happier with this paint job than my last "bird poop"  looking attempt. I HOPE I'm OM by May. I think it's doubtful, but I want to be in full kit regardless!

Outstanding progress!! :D

Thanks! It's such slow progress unfortunately. But it's coming together little by little! Fingers crossed that I don't have any major setbacks along the way!

The right knee did look a little over weathered, I like how it looks now though. LOVE your gaunt!! That's amazing. Someday I will have to get you to help me upgrade mine.  :P

Your bucket looks really good for a scratch build. I am still afraid to attempt one!

Thank you, Vod! I seriously get frustrated and very unhappy with most of the things I'm working on until at some point something clicks and it comes together. This gaunt was one of those things. I felt that it just didn't look near as cool as all the other ones that I was seeing. But it's grown on me! I'd be happy to help with one for you too!  :D

And now tonight was the moment of truth. I started attaching my plates with snaps. Every little imperfection in shape, molding and size has come out. I spent so much time being irritated at how it was looking but I guess after seeing the picture it's really not that bad. I still have a few more snaps to add to the outside chest plates and then I'll get my ab plate trimmed and shaped better. So here's where I am right now.

I definitely noticed that the top of my collar plate tapers down and is much more narrow than the top tabs of my backplate. I had hopes of overlapping the two and fastening them together, but I'm not sure if I can do that now. I can either 1) just go ahead and overlap them, 2) add two more shoulder bells to cover the flaw, or 3) trim the collar plate. I can add pictures to help clarify if I need to.

If I have to do option 3 my question is this: if I have to cut my collar plate down, how much space is allowed between the collar plate and backplate on your shoulders and still be approved? I've seen a small gap to what appears to be several inches.

Looks good.  ;D
As for the back plate and collar, it might help to see a picture of the difference between them.
I actually had to cut the tabs off the top of the standard Jango back plate, was the only way the back would keep from having a gap big enough to stuff a forearm in...
Title: Re: Colorblind Mando's Armor WIP
Post by: Kris Jasra on Apr 03, 2016, 08:49 AM
It's preferred to stick closer to the gap that Jango Fett has if you're going for that option and if you have to trim to have a larger gap, do so on the backplate rather than having a tiny collar on the front.

Thank you! I'll definitely get a picture up when. I get to that point so you can see it. And everything (including spacing) looks okay? I've been worried that since my snaps are now on, I'd have to readjust everything. It's kind of a pain in the shebs getting these things to sit right!

Good to know. I feel like my collar plate stretches over the shoulders pretty far, so I'm not sure if I'd have any issues trimming the collar. As I told STRAKAZulu, I'll get a picture up for reference once everything is good on my chest and ab plates!  Thanks for the heads up!

But if you want to have a plate connecting them, my Ruus'alor, staprider, made little 'bridge' pieces to span the gap between his back plate and collar plate. It's actually started to catch on in our clan and a couple guys have them now. I'll see if I can find his WIP thread and maybe it'll give you ideas.

Some updates!

I blackwashed some of my plates. I still want to dry brush some browns and coppers on them before I call it good.

Any suggestions or did I do it right? The collar plate needs hit again. I'm not happy with it entirely.

Next up, I found some random plastic pieces in the dump truck at work. Construction has its perks. You get to find all kinds of junk to use on your kit. I cut a spot out in the back of my helmet and slapped them on for part of my vents. Then I added a piece of sintra underneath that I plan on adding some details to.

I added another pouch to my belt. I used mink oil to darken it a bit. I'm pretty happy with it. And this week I'm hoping to get my leather holster for my Westar done.

I did a few other various things, but I didn't grab a picture of anything. I took my flight suit to get tailored... And to fix what I did on Sunday. But since it's prom season, it'll be done in about two weeks. So that pushes everything down to the wire to get OM before Motor City. Argh.

Basically the only advice I can offer for a black/brown wash is that it's really hard to do wrong....and the darker/dirtier you want, the more washes you do.

I like the vents. Those are cool!

You should bug them every day until they do your flight suit.   ;) No, that's probably a horrible idea....but I hope it gets done for you sooner then two weeks.

Everything's looking great, Vod. Nice work!

Thank you both! As I'm trying to tie up loose ends on this kit, the pre app pics are a reality in the near future!

I typed a very elaborate and detailed update, but my page refreshed and I lost it all. So here's the cliff notes:

-I finished my boot cover plates (no picture yet) to go with these shoes I found at the local goodwill. Low top shoes are good to go, right?

-adjusted and fixed my chest and collar plates so I can trim my ab plate down. (will finish this week)

-added a mythosaur skull with a homemade stencil. I'm pretty happy with it!

-right gauntlet is nearly finished. I just need to put the topcoat on and boom! It'll be done. I'll do that ASAP after work tomorrow.

-left comms gauntlet is ready to paint. Thanks to Dha Bral's greeble kit I've made these gaunts look pretty sweet. For the sake of time, I'd love to just hurry up and get them done, but I believe that taking your time and doing things right the first time really pays off.

-ordered my visor from t-visor.com tonight.

-The helmet is nearly done also. I added an antenna and will be fixing this ear cap up with a little bondo and quiksteel. Maybe a few more greebs will end up on it as well. The visor above the grill needs trimmed and touched up.

-i bought my colors to tie four tzitzit onto my mando's belt. Since I'm a Jewish Mando and I wear these every day (unless I'm sleeping or in the gym), I'd like to add that subtley into my kit. I used three colors, pistachio, red, and navy blue. There is a scriptural requirement for me to wear four tzitzit on my garments (found in B'midbar/Numbers) and there has to be one blue thread. I'll be just wearing them off of my belt with two on each side. I don't think it'll be something that would hold up my approval process. Here's what I'm talking about, but the ones I make and wear aren't near that long:

I think that's about it for now. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Wow! That's a ton of great progress!

The shoes look ok to me, but I know one of our guys who just went through had a problem with his low cut shoes looking too much like slippers, so you might want to see what they look like kitted up.

I like the mytho skull....plate spacing also looks really good.

Dha's kits are the best. It looks awesome! I love the fact you've got old Xbox controller buttons on there...

Helmet looks good so far!

No, that shouldn't hold you up at all, I don't think. They'll probably look at it like a belt or added accessory but it shouldn't be a problem. Even if it is, as long as you let them know that you're required to wear the tzitzit and you should be fine. It might even be a really cool touch to the kit, you never know.  :)

I've been slowly plugging away with my spare hour or two here and there. I've got most of the kit being wrapped up now. I still have a few bigger projects, but nothing major. The ab plate needs cut and trimmed just a little and painted and the backplate needs painted after a little more shaping. But aside from that, blackwashing, some hand painting on my gauntlets, and snaps attached to my flight suit.

Here's some of the stuff all strewn out.

And a little better picture with the start of my girth belt and pouches.

The helmet is almost ready for paint. The visor is cut and fitted, but obviously not in for this picture.

And my gauntlets got their top coat tonight. I had them all red, but felt that they needed some color. I still have a few things to do (like remove the logo from the non-working LCD screen) before I call them done. I still have to hand paint some details and attach blaster type barrels.

Thanks Aria! I'm not sure if you can see it or not, but on my bucket's ear you can see two PS2 buttons. Both the R1 and L1 buttons are on there. :) That ear still needs more greebles! I have a box full of greeble goods but nothing looks right!

Okay so I read back a few updates ago (Apr-12) and it looks like everything is on track.

The blackwash is great, really hard to screw it up since all you do is dirty everything.

Shoes should be ok but if not try and find spats, half chaps, or gaiters.

Both gauntlets look good but the screen needs the branding covered.

The keyslot area looks great, nice find on the greeblies. Looking closely at the controller trigger buttons I think I see the R1 and L1 still, if so that needs to be smoothed out.

The tzitzit should be no problem. Like Aria said they look like another accessory.

Ah! It looks so good!!  ;D I can't wait to see it!!

(also, isn't is great that it's FINALLY nice enough outside to not have to wear shoes all the time?  )

The buckets looks amazing...I love the triggers.  :) I can't wait to see it all painted up!

The gaunts looks fantastic. And those pouches are great...a couple of the guys up here have those same ones, and I rely on them heavily for carrying things.  They're very nice to have and they look good with the kit.

Thanks, Vod! It's grown on me too... As odd as that sounds. The entire time working on it, I was second guessing myself and considering starting over. But seeing it come together has really rekindled my love for it!

Thanks for the tips! I was planning on hiding the L1 and R1 with spot glaze putty tonight. (check and check). I knew it needed done still. I've also been throwing around the idea of gators. I'm not sure that I'm thrilled with how my legs/feet look with the rest of the kit. I haven't made any or even looked for any quite yet, but it may be something I do before it's all said and done.

I'm content with flip-flops or being barefoot as much as possible in the summer. I love it haha! And thank you! SOON the bucket will get some paint. I'm almost ready for it!

Now, for the updates... My gauntlets are done! (except for the closures) I may touch up a few more things and then hit them with blackwash, but this is pretty much it for these babies. I covered the branding on the screen with black paint. Lazy, I know Haha. But here they are!

I added the short barrel (a faucet aerator) above the "darts" and the two blaster barrels to the front.

If I've missed anything that can improve on what I've done, let me know!

Hahahaha. I couldn't just throw it away. I had plans to fix it but that never happened. Now it's stuck to my arm.

Woohoo! Everything but my backplate is attached to my vest. The negative that I noticed is how crooked my shoulders sit. I can thank an old skateboarding injury that I never got physical therapy for.  :-X my plates look a little crooked because of it, but there's not much I can do. I still need to fit the collar plate over my traps a little better, but that should be easy.

I was wondering if that ab plate was going to be silver...  :P

Collar plate looks a little off, like you noted, but other then that it looks good. Shoulder bells do sit crooked, but if that's from an old injury, there's not too much you can do about it. Just maybe let the app team know that's why they sit that way. I can't wait to see some paint on that bucket!!  :D

Shoulders look to sit at about the same angle mine do :P (Partial dislocation a year or so) Make sure you check the spacing round that ab, otherwise, looking good.

Haha. No. It'll get paint. I needed to get everything secured to the vest so I could trim it up properly but I got that all done lat night. Everything is lined up on both sides as far as placement on the vest. Holy smokes though. And the forecast is calling for rain here. Go figure lol.

Did you have any issues from the app team with your posture? And the fang on the left of the picture (my right) looks a little close, but that's because I need to put two more outside snaps on the ab plate.

There's a box on the app form about medical conditions that may need to be taken into consideration. Check that and then if needed we will pm for details. We judge on what we know about - check the box, we know to ask if the consideration is for the shoulders, don't check it, we'll tell you to straighten them :P

Exciting news!

I went from this

To this

I still have a little more to do with it, but it's almost there. I have my visor ready to go, it just needs installed. After that, some final touches and padding and it's done!

Thank you! I pretty much finished it today!

I couldn't leave it alone. I had to "unweather" it by covering up some of the scuffs on the face. I'M MUCH happier with it now. I painted my antenna and the side buttons, and well as painted my ears copper. The visor isn't permanently in, but it will be soon. If it's not raining too bad tomorrow, it'll get blackwashed. :)

It feels good to be about done!

Can't see it on the pics - might want to give it a few scuffs with some sandpaper too before blackwashing. Gives a better variety of damage than just chipping. Also the blackwash settles in scratches really nicely.

Yessir! I've added some scuffs and light passes to dull everything down and make it more uniform.

My next question. Is it preferred to attach my buckles/straps on the inside or outside of my shins? I've got it like this at the moment.

Typically the attachments are on the inside, but being that yours are nicely finished you could really go either way.

They're well finished and blend really nicely, so I'd go for leaving them. Mainly they're inside to hide raw edges etc.

The moment of truth has arrived. Time to post my pre app photos! Keep in mind my left shoulder sits higher than the right due to an old injury and mild scoliosis because of it. But beyond that, I'm ready for critique.

It never ends.  But it is SO worth it!  ;D

Thank you, Vod! I was glad to be there and hang out with everyone! Were you the one who won the bucket in the raffle?

I wish! I was there with my friend, and we got a bounty put on our heads

I need to update and include some pictures from last Sunday which was my first troop as an OM. It was at Maker Faire in Detroit with my  Vode in the Tra'cor clan. Enjoy a few of my favorite pictures.  :D

We may look tough, but we're a buncha softies.  :P

I'll continue to update this thread with pictures from events and any upgrades that I do. I currently have plans for some minor fixes and tweaks in the immediate but nothing picture worthy. However, I am planning a kama for the future.  8)

Just wanted to share a few photos and revive this thread as I will FINALLY be getting back to my upgrades and fine tuning my kit... Maybe even working toward the brigade I had in mind too. We shall certainly see. Anywho here's a few cool shots that makes me look tougher than I really am.

In that last one, I think my snap came undone on my backplate. Still a cool shot though. That got fixed and the backplate adjusted.

I can say that I've got my shoulder cape in the works, followed by hopefully upgrading to ABS knees, and different boots. Stay Tuned!

Your kit looks excellent, vod. What brigade are you going for?

Thanks Straka! I had always had my eye on the hazardous environment brigade. That was kinda the plan from the beginning. That's why I had done the helmet with the vents in the front.

I've already got my backplate addition started for my breathing apparatus.

I'll need some sort of weapon like a dagger or blade type weapon.

MAYBE just a few more minor tweaks. And I'll have better footwear coming soon so I can ditch those wraps around my feet!

Yay, upgrades! Haha

Well, I knew it would happen. All of my photos on photobucket are no longer being able to be hosted. Now to begin updating some of the missing photos and moving everything to imgur. Anyhow, here's some new additions/upgrades to the kit.

"Salvation" in Mando'a on the bucket. Borrowed the idea from Evaar'la Kal.

New paint scheme on the E-5 to match my Westar.

A Jango inspired holster with lightsaber crystal trophies.

This thing just because it looked Swarzy haha.

These slick boots that replace my wraps.

Plates to cover the gap between the collar and backplate.

One may or may not have a half cape attached now  ;D
(http://i.imgur.com/Cnb9zhs.jpg)

And I just got professional shots done Sunday. Should have those back by the end of the weekend. I'm excited to see everything all together on the kit. It'll be a fun little before and after comparison.

Looking great Kurshi, it's awesome that you're doing upgrades now!  I really like your new shoes, they look tough and stylish at the same time :D

Is there a lot you have to do for hazardous environment?

Shhhh... They're actually men's ugg boots that I won on a goodwill auction Hahaha. So they're entirely fashionable! And thank you!

And I think I might change to privateer. That just sounds a little more exciting. With that I'll need to add some more pistachio for intimidation, add a knife, and maybe a few small things and I'll be good to go!

Thanks Straka! I'm much happier with it and it feels more legit. I hated my legwraps and just felt like I was missing a few things.

The Pistachio Privateer!  It is definitely the most intimidating colour ever ;)

Haha! Well, it's the brightest color I've got on my kit, so I have to go with it.

So, my shots came back. I'm really happy with the cape addition and all the other little updates.

Here you can see the new boots and the holster addition.
I'm SO glad that I got rid of those low top shoes and wraps.  ??? What a pain to mess with.

Here you can see the cape

Here are the gap plates.
I'm very happy about these. They just make everything look more complete. I might need to adjust the one that my cape attaches to a little, or just make sure it's secured with velcro. It looks a little flared up.
