Cakes' Soft Parts
« on: Dec 11, 2015, 10:33 PM »
Well I'm cracking back down on my Mando after finishing my Henchmen 21.
I started on my soft parts as I'm finding them to be a tad easier. Then I'll focus my attention back on the chest armor once I have a vest for proper sizing/spacing.

Leather Pouches and a re-purposed gas mask pouch with fake metal latch to cover the purse magnets used to hold it down instead of the button

Will this buckle be ok to have shown or will I have to cover it?

Flight suit all weathered, my phone didn't pick up all the detail but you can kinda see the darker areas on the legs. I'll be doing a heavy

weathered gaiters

Kama, it's made with black outdoor fabric, blue cotton on the inside and then a light blue binding tape

All weathered with a blaster burn hole. The outdoor fabric while nice and heavy was extremely hard to hold the paint and even harder to scuff.

I'll be running a canvas belt through it that will be covered by the girth belt

Girth belt using Deimos Ordo's tutorial
Started with a thick fabric base, it's the same fabric my kama is made of. This will be covered with 10mm braided leatherette cord and burlap.

The mess of the cord cut to lengths

Started stretching it out using a clip board and tape to hold it down. I'll be glueing it to the base and then hand stitching it down by using a nail to punch through the cord.

EDIT: All glued down on the base, loving the colours

I'll hopefully have some time this weekend to get some more work done on the girth belt and have some pics up

Thanks Kavryn!
I just got it glued down to the base. Now I need some burlap to wrap around a couple of spots, canvas straps for the adjustable ends and need to sew down a few parts for added strength

update: Got some burlap/jute as well as some cotton straps.

Sewed on the straps and glued down the burlap. Then used some no sew coverall buttons.

the straps allow me to adjust the sizing of the belt.

Test fitting

Just need to weather it.

Did some work on my vest template. A few of the lose bits on the sides and the bottom folds will get sewn down but how's the sizing?
What do you guys think?

Also got some new gloves in. They where suppose to be tan but the seller sent me the wrong colour. I ended up getting a full refund and told to keep them. Then all of a sudden the colour I wanted was listed out of stock so I have a feeling they sent me these thinking I wouldn't notice the difference between tan and olive. Anyway, I figure they will do once I've fully weathered them.

Got the templates cut. I'll check out the local fabric place for some Duck cloth/canvas.
I was thinking of either doing very dark brown or getting black and sun bleaching it to look closer to the colour here:

Any suggestions on length or anything else?
Right now it sits 2 inches below my waist which will be covered by my girth belt, kama and ammo belt.

Thanks vode!
I picked up 4 meters of that fabric today for my vest. I had originally planned to put in a zipper on the one side, but now I'm pretty sure I'll be using some side release buckles with webbing and some "modesty" panels so that I can tighten the vest.

I also did a template for my neck seal.

I missed your comment about sun-bleaching black, and if you build the item first, and then sun-bleach it, you'll get some seriously realistic weathering about the seams and what not. I might consider doing the same with some of my darker soft parts.

If you have inclement weather, you can get similar effects with a strong plant light.

Ya I was going to hang it in my window. The plant light might be a good idea though with it being winter.

I got some work done on my neck seal. Thinking about redoing the stitching around the front so that i can clean it up.
It will get dyed with the rest of the vest.

Been awhile since I updated.
I did some work on the vest sewing the arms and shoulder together. I've also got my "modesty" panels pinned in with the clips so that I can adjust the vest. I still may need to shorten the width back panel though and trim up the length.

That clip right in the armpit seems like it would be really uncomfortable, and possibly noticeable as well. It is unlikely that your webbing will dye to the same colour as your canvas.

The clip is actually down far enough I don't feel it. I was worried about that too but the dummy was made with the stretch of the arms on the tshirt so it's about 2 inches down from my actual pit lol. The webbing is all cotton and I have some that is identical in shade to the rest of the vest.

Here is the first test fit. I pulled the bottom up a little to much of the bottom though. And there is no zipper in the right shoulder so it's just loose right now.

second fit. I pulled it back down but it still needs some adjusting, and I'll be shifting the clips around adding another one to each side (4 clips per side) but I've poked enough holes in my fingers for one night lol.

I think that the second length reads better on you.

Same here. I did a bit of work on the shoulder bells. They have padding in them but I don't think I really like them or how they stick out so I'll more then likely be ripping it out.
