Fiain Ros Wren Helmet WiP
« on: Dec 11, 2017, 06:21 PM »
Hi.  This is my first build. I 3D printed my helmet in ABS using a pattern I purchased.  My Mando is a Wren clan -style, so I am using the Sabine-style helmet.

My sketches are not worth showing to anybody, so here's what I've got done so far:

Printing (11/24/17):

All the pieces printed, except rangefinder (11/26/17):

Putting the pieces together to be sure nothing is a problem (11/26/17):
Front

Top

Back

After gluing all the pieces together (12/01/17):
Back

Front

After first seam filling and an acetone vapor bath for initial smoothing - the bottom got nice and smooth and shiny! (12/09/17):
Back

Front

Ear caps have been glued on. When putting together the backpiece and smoothing it, I caused an issue, so I need to reprint that piece.

Question: Do I need a rangefinder? I didn't print it yet. I can, but I need to know so I can finish putting the Helmet together prior to painting.

Thank you! The helmet is coming along. I've decided to forgo the rangefinder.

Here are some photos from a few days ago after I did more seam fills and sanding. (12/13/17)

I've been working on it quite a bit the past few days after these photos were taken and I'm ready to start the priming process. I'm a little random in the timing of my photos.

Update 12/17/17: When you say you're ready for the next step, and then you decide you're going to fix something that is okay but can be improved. Which now means you're a few steps away from the next step.

After more work, I'm at the point where I'm trying to decide whether to keep at those couple of spots that aren't quite right or move onto the next steps of priming and sanding over and over again that may or may not take care of those spots. And if not, those spots could just become battle damage with some weathering.

Photos taken 12/19/17, no additional work done on 12/20.

If you are looking at it in the photos and see something egregious, let me know and I'll try to fix it more. I have one spot on the back ridge that I've fixed multiple times and every time during sanding the divet returns. Thinking I need to just weather that spot.

Honestly it looks pretty dang good. You could mould it and fix the casts a bit easier than continued fretting with the print. But thatís just how I would do it. Easier to say than do lol

A lot of the issues I was having went away once I got through the prime and sand rounds. I primed and used 0000 steel wool to sand after 4 hours of drying 6 times with at least 48 hours between priming sessions to get what I've decided is the finished primed helmet. My next steps is to get my visor made and installed. After that, I'll paint. I have my planned color scheme and design ready, but visor installation seems like it should happen first. After all of that, I'll put the pads in.

Images are a progression of the view from un-primed 12/19/17 (top left) to finished primed 1/7/18 (bottom right) in all images below. The only reason the black looks different is because the lighting is different. I had varying levels of natural light because it's Seattle and I couldn't always take the photo in the very limited daytime hours that also have a lot of variability in sunlight level.

Front view:

Left side (as worn):

Right/RF side (not going to do RF - instead will have battle damage):

Question mainly for Bow on this helmet - the way I understand it, if an earcap looks like it should have a RF there should be something there, RF, antenna, etc. Would the indent in the right earcap here fall under that same "rule"?

No and hereís why, if thereís a base for the rf to sit in and a cover to go over the rf stalk the cover must be present whether or not the rf is there. Savvy

As to this helmet itís good to go in this state the night owl helmet has an interesting rf mount system.

Nooooooooo!!!!

After the armor party yesterday where I worked on the visor, when I got home I dropped my helmet on my garage floor.   :o A weak spot cracked (kind of expected), but another rather large crack formed in the primer. It is not cracked all the way through.  :'(

I am going to finish the painting on it. I may be able to cover the crack or do something with it. Maybe no one will notice?  :(

I did the first layer of paint today to see if the crack was going to show, and unfortunately it does. This is just a metal-looking base layer to form all the weathering from. I still have 2 more paint layers (ie, 2 more colors going on top).

I may just 3D print and make another helmet. It doesn't hurt to have a couple helmets hanging around, right? Unfortunately, it takes me 6 weeks to go from nothing to finished helmet working every day (some days are dead days where I'm waiting on drying, etc.)

Meanwhile, this is what the current helmet look likes today:

PS: Thanks Bowfanny and Ran for your kind comments earlier.
PSS: Thanks Mysterious Stranger and Bowfanny for your discussion concerning the rangefinder and ear cap. It's great to know that I'm on the right track for that, at least.
