Katís Executioner WIP
« on: Feb 01, 2019, 10:06 PM »
Hello all,

Iíve been instructed that it would be a good idea for me to start a WIP page for my executioner. As of right now, I am still collecting everything I need in order to get started.

So far I have the following in-house (hopefully Iíve figured out how to add links and photos correctly otherwise Iíll be going back and fixing this):

Helmet - from Lone Wolf
https://imgur.com/a/OWcpQmq

Besked (aka stabby thing #1) - Etsy, The3DPropShop, currently in 3 pieces
https://imgur.com/a/qAtbyTZ

Leather - disassembled leather coats picked up at a local thrift store
https://imgur.com/gallery/NeIJhZZ

Besíbev - (aka stabby flute) PVC pipe, stopper, glue, and coupling picked up from local hardware store, instructions for playable PVC flute found online, still need to do more than obtain the parts.
https://imgur.com/a/mnaU1DW
http://astro.pas.rochester.edu/~aquillen/phy103/Labs/FluteLab.pdf

I plan to slowly add pictures and links to this just so I have a single location where I can refer back to figure out where in hezmana I found stuff and what the smeg I was doing when I made something. I have chest armor on order and guns as well, so Iíll post those once I have them here. As well as the other stabby things and boom stick(s) and Ďsplodey things.

Iím planning on having a black base suit with leather cape and vest. Iím hoping to find a nice dark grey to use for my cape lining and sash and will find a bone white for paint and accents (along with a dark grey and probably black paint)

Once I have my chest armor pieces I plan on draping a vest and mocking up a pattern for both that and my cape before diving in with the leather. The body suit will be mocked up after I get some fabric I like (the husband and I are planning a trip to a fabric warehouse later this month).  I have no idea what Iím going to do for boots yet.

And that seems like a fairly good start for a first post on a WIP...

The imgur.com links should work if you make sure you're only linking that image and not the album for it (right click your picture and open in new tab so it has the <imgur stuff>.jpg link) and then link that with the [ img ]<link>[ /img ] format. Remove spaces when you actually do it, though.

Cool concept and progress, too!

Hello Biokat
Is a good step for start.
I suggest you check this Guide Image Gallery System
It will help you a lot to upload photos and have your own image gallery.

Corrected image links and new pics (since itís been a while since I posted anything on this)

Helmet

Besked

Leather

3D printed throwing knives from Etsy (from RetroNanoís shop)

Top, bottom, and skirt made by me (Jalie pattern 2920 for leggings and skirt, pattern 3667 for top)

Vest pattern draping/drafting by me
and

Vest made from disassembled leather coats
and

Cape also made from leather coats (draped/drafted by me)

Plates attached (mostly) to the vest using grommets and Chicago screws (because I didnít want to deal with Velcro and am far more comfortable with them than any of the other options)

Still need the center diamond attached, sleeves added to the vest, and then all of the painting. I also have some nice metal knee plates that a friend made, but donít seem to have pictures of them right now and still need to figure out how Iím attaching them.  Probably going to use leather straps.

Next on the list for fabric bits is figuring out the belt and holsters for my guns, holsters for my knives and shoe covers/spats for my legs/feet.

Next for armor bits is attaching the center diamond and then priming and painting everything.  Unfortunately the cold weather has severely dampened the ability to paint outside, so that one is probably going to be slow going for a while,

More pictures. Today I worked on modifying a fife into a mando flute.

Fife - from Amazon

Other items from Home Depot

And a local friend was wonderful and taught me how to solder/braise pieces of metal together.

Took the fife and added a coupler at the mouthpiece end that can be drilled through for adding a strap to attach to my belts with

Then took the air chamber and the other coupler and hooked them together

And then used a Dremmel to cut the Ďsharpí end

And then attached that to the fife

And hereís the assembled piece (ignore the dog fur - the fur baby gave up her spot on the bed for the picture)

And then I used the dremmel to clean up the edge of the stabby end, braising joints and get rid of the drips and such and then to scuff the body of it up so that I can work on weathering and painting

And hereís what Iím thinking for leather cord decoration, but I need to weather the metal first before sticking the leather on and then weathering more.

Got a chance to work on sewing items today.

Neck seal made from the same fabric as my flight suit

And worked on a mock up for my holsters. Each can hold six throwing knives along with my gun.

Mock up sent surprisingly well. Didnít even have to change too much or rip out too many seams.

Next is to make the holsters in leather. And hope that it gets to be warm enough to work on painting soon.

More work today, holster and loincloth

Used a spare piece of leather (from the disassembled coats I used for my vest and cloak) and the spare lining fabric for my cloak for the start of my loincloth. Cut the fabric to match the leather then hemmed it up.

Still need to decide exactly how I will connect it to the rest, but Iím leaning toward attaching it to the inside of the sash so that it all goes on as one piece.

Picked up some 1Ē rings from Menards for making the holsters

Hereís the mock with the knives and gun in it (base holster pattern from Imperial Leather Supply)

Decided to use some of the spare spandex for some of the knife pockets, so I got those cut out and hemmed

Got the leather (3-4 ounce shoulder from Tandy) pieces cut out and started to figure out placement of everything

Iím using part of a belt from the local thrift store for the strap around my leg. Got it trimmed and then punched some new holes for around my leg. Iíll use another piece for holding the holster to the y-connector piece

Tomorrow Iíll unpack the leather sewing machine to use to sew this all together, since my normal machine just isnít quite up to stitching through that thick of material.

Thanks Shar!  Your input is greatly appreciated.

This first is the machine Iíve been using for everything for the past decade

I use this for everything. Costumes, clothes, repairs, you name it.  But it just isnít meant for use with anything thicker than coat leather.

So I unpacked the most recent addition to my sewing collection

Which worked perfectly for 1-2 layers of leather and spandex

Unfortunately, even it wasnít up to 3 layers of leather with 2 of spandex

So that meant rivets instead on the outside bottom seam. But I think it turned out okay

Ended up adding a second leg strap to help keep it in place

All in all two holsters that I think will work well.   Each holds 6 throwing knives and one blaster. Easy attachment to my weapons belt - they slip on with a loop. And plenty of movement, which is great. Because I insist on having ONE costume I can move and sit in comfortably. So this thing WILL have lots of movement and be comfortable.

Waiting for warmer weather in order to start on painting/dying/staining things, so right now it looks a bit weird with just the veg tan. It will eventually be a dark red/brown to match my pouch belt and some of the leather bits elsewhere.

Realized that Iíve never actually had all of my parts on at the same time yet.

Figured out that the neck seal really needs to go on before the vest.  Had to take off a couple sets of pouches to be able to make that belt tighter.  The helmet REALLY doesnít sit right without padding.  Need to adjust the holster leg strap size, but itís easier to do that before putting them on.  Loincloth location looks good, so I need to attach that to the sash.  Holsters are nice and comfortable - made sure I could sit with everything so far.  Hair kept getting in the way, so that REALLY needs to be braided before putting things on (because I just canít get enough arm movement to comfortably do it once the vest is on).

Still debating if I need to dye the gaiters darker or not.

Not pictured-
Knees (need to drill holes in them and figure out strapping)
Gauntlets (assembled, but we didnít think to grab them from the basement)
Several weapons (either still being assembled or havenít figured out attachment yet)
Ankle covers (these are a maybe, as I havenít decided if I want them on this kit yet or not... need to see the knees on it first)

And I think thatís the main items accounted for... everything still needs to be painted/weathered/dyed/stained for colors - itís finally starting to be warm enough to work on projects that require certain temperatures and well ventilated areas.

If anyone notices anything major that Iíve forgotten, please let me know!  I either have it and forgot to mention it (most likely) or somehow overlooked ití so far.

It was brought to my attention that while I said what I did for some things, I didnít post detail pictures. So here is a post with some of the details (mainly from my vest and belt) of what I said I was doing.

First up - pouch belt
I bought a belt blank from Tandy. In order to get the placement of the snaps correct, I drew parallel lines on the back of the belt and then measured set distances and marked them on each side. Then I used one of my leather punches that was just slightly smaller than the snap needed to punch holes at the specific spots. I did this on both ends. I made the holes just slightly smaller so that when I placed the snap, there wasnít extra gap around the hole where it could shift around and wear out the area more quickly.

For my vest, I disassembled several leather coats I got from local thrift stores and then used he pieces to make my vest, cloak/cape and other random pieces. I didnít want a zipper or Velcro that I would have to hide, so I went with grommets.  Because the coat leather is fairly thin and my grommets not terribly large, I was able to just use my awl to slowly awl open a hole just slightly smaller than my grommets.  For the side seams, because I had folded over the leather to give it a nice edge, the doubled up leather was thick enough for my little grommets without needing any kind of stabilizer or spacer.

Again, I used a ruler and pen on the inside to make sure I had them all evenly spaced and so they would match up on both sides.

When I started looking at attaching my armor to my vest, I again turned to grommets.  I didnít like the fuss with matching up the Velcro and it shifting that my husband had, and I wanted something that allowed for me to fairly easily swap out pieces if I ended up having one get damaged or needed to repaint it or anything like that.  So we went to the local hardware store armed with one of the grommets we were going to use and went through the Ďboxes in the back where you pick out the random nuts/bolts/gaskets/screws/whatever it is you needí area (I have no idea what he technical term for that area is, but I know it has one).  We found some of the medium length Chicago screws that fit into the grommets with a little extra space (to allow for a bit of movement without anything breaking and so that if the grommets shrunk a little when it was assembled we wouldnít have to worry) and then bought enough to put one on every Ďcornerí of each armor piece.  We attached the one side to the armor

A little bit n from each edge - that way when we put the grommets on the vest, they wouldnít be visible from the front at the edges of the armor.  No one wants to see attachment points on the outside.
Once the posts were attached to all of the armor pieces, we put my vest on and then started pressing the armor into place, one piece at a time.  We started with my collar piece, added the grommets and attached the armor, then went on to the next piece.  That way they would be in position and wouldnít have shifted too much between each piece.

Unfortunately, the grommets were larger, so I had to use my punch set (again, with a punch just slightly smaller than my grommet) to make the initial hole.  Because he leather is thinner and the grommets bigger, I needed to add some stabilizer.  I used some of the scraps of the leather and punched holes in them and added them to the inside/back to give the grommets more support so they wouldnít pull out of the fabric.

Since I did that on the inside, the outside looks just like normal grommets

Since I used the posts to mark where the holes needed to be, I could then just put the Chicago screw posts into the grommets and attach the other side.

And presto, armor attached to my vest.
