Whatever works for you to make it fit comfortably. Some use the green upholstery foam from a fabric store, or military helmet pads, or hard hat suspension rigs.

Dremel, with the flex attachment, and one of the cutting bits that ISN'T the cut off wheel, cut MOST of the material off, finish to the line with the sanding drum and needle files.

Anything that files, cuts or grinds will do the job. (Don't use a hammer) Get a rasp, or a knife or a chisel or a low-grit sandpaper and have at it. It's painful to do but the texturing will give your buy'ce a little something special. Also, before you tear into it, think about how that damage might occur. Look for sharp edges that would wear down over time.

For example, here's my helmet:

Depending how the ear caps are designed, either glue flush to the bucket and fill any gaps along the seam, or you can (carefully) drill through from the inside of the bucket and reinforce with screws. Just make sure to drill a decent pilot hole into the earcap as well to avoid cracking.

if your using E6000 which is what i was recommended to use by the makers of those ear caps (they are demondogstudios ear caps right?) you can just use the E6000 to fill in the gaps.
