Vec Orrad Take 2!
« on: Apr 26, 2019, 11:08 AM »
I've been working my kit off and on over the last few years, but after much Ruusa'lor prodding, I am finally getting around to making a WIP!

These first few pre-pre-app pictures were taken the first time I put the kit completely on, in January.
The helmet is NME Stalker; Vest, Girth, and Kama are Sidi Renís Meridian Creations; DC17s are PropFunks on Etsy, Gauntlets are April Storms; Gun Belt holsters are Darman's Props on Etsy; Belt itself is a WW2 belt off ebay; Knees, Shins, Boot Armor and Shoulders are DHPFX on Etsy; Chest and Backplate are custom based off Drake's Legacy.  Also on there are Corellian Bloodstripes from Khloe's Custom Clothing on Etsy.

And one of my favorites, my Verd'ika and me!

After wearing it the first time, I of course found lots I wasn't fond of, so set to work fixing things.

I fixed the shoulders to be more even, ditched the thigh plates (they may return later, who knows?), switched the gauntlets to a magnetic closure, and added some pouches. I was also told my arms were too baggy, so purchased a new set of dickies coveralls off Amazon. To add some flair, I also purchased a set of Cabuur Akaata brown rank rope to emphasize my current status as Active Duty Military, and some wookiee braids from Iron Phoenix Props. They should be arriving any day now. I also have a buddy who's practicing with his 3d printer so offered to make me two Thermal Dets and a Frag Grenade, but timeline on those is unknown.

Potentially unpopular opinion, but I actually liked the spider-webbing of the paint on the DC17s. To me it looks like weather and showing age. And while its not as obvious in the pictures, the webbing is on both sides of both blasters. I also intentionally didn't add the trigger to the DC17s as I simply couldn't fit my gloved finger inside the trigger guard if i did so!

Still to do is to re-center the bottom of the chest plate, weather all the soft parts, actually attach the backplate (the previous sticky velcro didn't cut it!), and sew some of the straps closed rather than fabric glue. Unfortunately the bloodstripes didn't survive the transfer from previous pants to new flight suit. Moment of silence for the destroyed pieces!

My hope is to get these all done this weekend to submit some Pre-App photos!

Thanks for reading! Any advice/comments/feedback is welcome!

Updates!
My Ruusa'lor ended up submitting the pictures from the above post for Pre-App. I received the following feedback items:
1) Fix my posture, and stand straight for pictures. Easy fix!
2) More weathering on softparts
3) Positioning: Raise thigh plates a hair, line up the shins and boot plates, and bring the kama more forward
4) Fix the spiderwebbing on blasters
5)  Add pouches or something else for waist items

Worked the last two weeks or so to fix some of those issues.
- I got a new flightsuit (thank you amazon prime wardrobe!) and got that thing weathered. Also weathered the rest of the soft parts
- I removed the thigh and bicep plates. I realized that i prefer the look of the lighter armor, and it means less hassle later.
- Sanded and repainted the blasters, and re-weathered with some rub-n-buff.
- Added pouches.

With those done, I did an unofficial troop this morning to see what broke, then went to my clan's armor party immediately after.
Two things became immediately apparent in the troop - my knee plates were massively sagging, and my gauntlets needed a more secure closing mechanism.
To fix the knees - i didn't have my sewing machine on hand, so i just punched some holes in the flight suit and extended the knee's Chicago screws into it as a temporary fix. Velcro will be sewn on in the near future. Not sure i like the permanently attached Knees, but, needed to be done!
To fix the gauntlets, i took another clan member's recommendation, and grabbed a set of Trunk Latches (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-2-3-4-in-x-1-1-2-in-Oil-Rubbed-Bronze-Chest-Latches-19866/301015022). After some quick shaping of the latch, they fit perfectly on my gauntlets. Perfectly secure!

All that done, I went ahead and kitted up, and got the next round of pre-app photos accomplished!

Let me know what you all think! I'm open to feedback!

Looks good. Only advice I would give is the parts of the flak vest that shows seems a bit too clean. hit it with some browns or silver paint. Arms also hard to tell if some weathering was done. If just the lighting, best bet is to make sure to add some close ups to your pre-app and wip thread. A little black wash on the pouches as well wouldn't hurt. Other than that, kit looks amazing.

Hey all!
Got feedback from my Pre-App 2, and set to work over the last week, leading up to taking Pre-App 3!

Official Feedback Received:
- More Weathering on Flightsuit (grease and such to match plates), and Kama
- Trim about 2" off the bottom lame of my backplate
- Trim about 1/2" off each side of the chest plate

In addition to the above, as i showed my pictures to friends, the main comments people gave was 1) that the blue/red transition was jarring 2) that they thought it'd look better if i did only one color, and 3) asked if i was planning to have more than just my helmet blue. I also received a suggestion on how to make my my helmet wiring more efficient, and that i may want to add more weathering to the boots themselves

With that feedback set, i went to work.
- Weathering the flightsuit, i did a quick google search on ways to simulate grease, and my favorite answer was to melt Shoe Polish, then apply with an old sock. It worked wonders. I applied a good amount of black polish, then in certain areas i also did brown, just to mix the colors up a bit
- Weathering the kama, i tried doing the same "grease" but the patterned material just masked all the weathering i could do. So after a few small attempts, i ended up  just grabbing a steak knife (don't tell my wife!) and made long/quick cuts, then grabbed my hand sander and attacked further
- Trimming the backplate was easy to accomplish. Just measured with a ruler, marked, and cut with dremel. Then sanded down, and re-applied rub-n-buff for consistency
- Trimming the chest was more difficult, due to the legacy strapping system. I was able to take 1/2" off either side of the pectoral plate and collar, but only 1/4" off either side of the lames. Even doing that exposed a lot of the strapping, so i had to cut into that to keep it hidden. I couldn't go more than 1/4" without having to re-do the chicago screws
- I decided to also address the coloring comments by popping the chest diamond off the pectoral plate and hitting it with the same blue coloring. Once dry, re-glued it back on
- I also decided to go ahead and do a blackwash based on Nano's comments, to add some more depth. Hung my armor up on a clothing rack, Mixed the acrylic paint with rubbing alcohol, grabbed a foam brush, and started painting it on, only to realize i was dripping paint onto the floor of my garage. Thinking quickly, i grabbed my flightsuit and used it as a rag to clean up the paint, then laid the flightsuit down under the armor so any further drops land on it (free weathering!). Applied blackwash to helmet and all armor pieces, then the pouches and as well.
- Lastly, i hit the boots with some quick white spray paint misting to show some weathering

With all of that done, i drove up to my Ruus'alor Sol'yc's house yesterday for round 3 photos with him and one other Ruus'alor. They convinced me to go ahead and keep using my bicep plates, so re-added them back to my kit. Those thigh plates though hopefully won't ever see sunlight again.

Aaaaand, here are the photos we submitted for Pre-App 3!

Finally, here's some closeups of weathering

After getting the Pre-App Photos done, it was time to go play at the Wings over the Rocky's Air and Space Museum! This museum has a life sized x-wing signed by most of the actors in 1996, and used by LFL for advertising. Now the Mercs, 501st, and Rebels routinely visit to "guard" the X-wing from museum guests.

As always, feedback is appreciated!

Oh i'm a little behind on updating this!
BLUF: I had a few fixes from App, accomplished, re-submitted, and made OM on 23 May!

Longer story:

Feedback from the app was to fix a few minor things. 1) the back plate needed re-alignment. If you look at the sides, you'll see one has a staggered slope while one is straight down. 2) trim 1/2" off the bottom chest lame so it doesn't extend over the girth belt, and 3) sand the handles off my pistols more.
Trimming and sanding were done pretty quickly, but the re-aligning took a bit. i basically had to re-strap the entire part to get them to hold tension the correct way. no fun, but it worked.

Went to a Ruus'alor's house with a second Ruus'alor to take app pics round 2, but soon realized that i needed more work to align correctly. It's pretty hard to align your back when you're by yourself. So the three of us basically re-punched holes in my vest for the chest and backplate chicago screws to sit. It took some time to get the alignment and spacing correct, but, we got there in the end. I also had them mark where the flak vest side buckles were tightened to, so i could sew them in later. i didn't like having to constanty tighten them up, so i decided to sew them at the correct tightness.

Took application round two pics!

Resubmitted those pictures, and a few days later got my notification of OM! Happy day!

I quickly added the Cerar Logo to my right shoulder. While i'm Air Force, the Army has a tradition that I really like. Soldiers will wear the patch of their current unit on the left shoulder, and the patch of the first unit they went to combat with on the right. I thought that was fitting as I'm now in the middle of moving to Las Vegas.

The following weekend i did my first Invasion as OM, along with Desago and Illyria Crucible of Cerar Clan, as well as the 501st Mountain Garrison

The weekend after, I spent a few hours working the MMCC booth at the Denver Pop Culture Comic Con, where the group managed to take down legendary Jedi Master Satele Shan (and a few lightsaber trophies along the way)

So there ya go! Made OM, and got a few troops in!
