Airsoft weapons as a base - post links please!
« on: Nov 07, 2019, 05:26 PM »
I have had good luck with converting an airsoft MP40, and in the process, found several options that might make for base blasters for folks.

What I like about using an airsoft as a base, vs. a 3D print, or (gasp) Nerf! is that it requires very little conversion, cutting, sanding and post produciton, other than adding scopes, greeblies and other add-ons to make it look Swarzy.

I'll try to find where I got the MP40 from, but it was like $10 or $20. Very cheap. Possibly ebay. I'll provide links to the other add-ons I used for my MP40.

I also ran into this site that has a section on low cost airsoft guns.

https://www.airsoftgi.com/Airsoft-Guns-139/Low-Cost-Airsoft-Guns-441/

It has everything from pistols, to SMGs to shotguns to carbines to sniper rifles to light and heavy machine guns.

Here are some of my favorites:

SMGs:

This might be where I got my MP40 from. Love the $11.70 price!

Assault blasters

I love the WWII vibe on this one.

Light machine guns:

This isn't cheap, but it's epic:

Who doesn't want an ultra cheap RPG-7?

Please feel free to post up other sources of great airsoft bases for blasters.

Evike.com is another good resource for airsoft guns. Just as a heads' up, I own that StG-44(to give it its proper name), and while the real ones are the canonical base for both the DLT-20A and the A-295 Hoth rifle, the one you linked is 3/4 scale. Same with the one immediately below it. In fact, a lot of the Double Eagle and UKArms springers that are on the lower end of the budget tend to be 3/4 scale. Not saying it's a bad thing, but just something to keep in mind as you build.

Wow, that is good to know! I didn't realize that. Is it listed in the website, or do you just have to know?

A good thing to keep in mind is that many cons won't allow any props that are built off of anything that could ever fire, this includes replica guns, airsoft and bb guns, so having say a 3d printed gun as a second to take in those cases (always read the con rules on props btw) would be a good idea.

I believe that if you remove all of the internals, that would make it less of an issue. That's what I did with my MP40.

That said, each con can do what they want... and they are -- up to an including prohibiting ANYTHING that looks like a gun... even if it is 3D printed. Here is Denver Pop Culture Con's VERY UNPOPULAR rules on blasters and props: (emphasis mine)

https://denverpopculturecon.com/show-info/policies/

Quote
PROHIBITED ITEMS:

Firearms of any kind – this includes BB guns, replica guns, cap guns, paintball and pellet guns and airsoft guns, even if it has been disabled or is not loaded – nothing resembling a gun of any kind is permitted

In that case, they completely stopped allowing anyone to bring in any kind of blaster... whatsoever. Regardless of what it is made from. Including 3D printed.

Quote
Allowed vs. Not Allowed

These prop examples should be used for planning purposes only and are not all-inclusive. Denver Pop Culture Con reserves all rights to deny props at any time. If in doubt, leave it at home.

Allowed

Wands of rubber or plastic construction
Light sabers made of plastic, including ultrasabers (sabers with a metal hilt)
Loosely strung plastic bows with non-removable plastic arrows
Any size prop made of foam, rubber, cardboard, paper, light plastic, or cloth
    Plastic parasols
    Sonic screwdrivers

Not Allowed

Anything resembling a firearm, including sci-fi blasters
    Anything that releases projectiles
    Crossbows
    Slingshots
Firearms of any kind no matter the material
    Bats
Blades of any kind
    Functioning bows
    Golf clubs
    Mallets
    Martial arts weapons
    Paddles
    Explosives, including firecrackers
    Chemical weapons, including pepper spray
    Drones
    Dirigibles
    Helium balloons
    Selfie sticks
    Metal or wooden umbrellas
metal objects of any shape, including shields
    wood objects of any shape
Large PVC/Resin items of any shape

If any of the above items are deemed unsafe by Denver Pop Culture Con Security, they will not be allowed inside the building. If you’re bringing, buying, or selling something that could maim, damage or cause bodily harm, we’re going to take issue. They will only be allowed as long as they are deemed safe and will not cause harm onsite.

I didn't create this thread to go into the intricacies of 3D printed or Con rules... all I want to do is share possible sources of airsoft guns as bases for blasters. So... let's try not to dwell on that part of the conversation much more.

Personally I have found airsoft bases MUCH easier to modify and get troopable vs. 3D printing  - especially PLA prints. I found that I lost a LOT of detail on several of my 3D printed blasters while trying to either sand down print lines, or adding XTC-3D to fill in print lines. The main thing you have to do is remove aspects that make it able to fire (if that's important to you)...

...and to fill in screw holes. I do believe the MMCC is particular about that in the app process. I filled in most of the hole with hot glue, then covered it up with bondo spot filling putty. Sand it down, then paint and no one will know there were screw holes. (Unless they are really looking for them.)

Some of these make for very inexpensive and quick additions to an arsenal.

Here are things I used on my MP40 to Swarzy it up:

DH-PF/X Resin Single Point Scope.

There are few things more Swarzy than a good Single Point Scope. This one is only $20

https://www.etsy.com/listing/709181627/resin-single-point-scope?ref=shop_home_active_36

Dual Weaver/Picatinny & Dovetail 6 Slot Aluminum Scope Base

You need something to attach the Crosman scope to the blaster. (I also purchased a different base to mount the offset scope to my blaster.)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JK6HC1K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Crosman 0410 Targetfinder Rifle Scope

This is about as basic as basic gets. But nothing Swarzies up a blaster like adding 2-3 scopes on it (some sarcasm... but you get the point.)

Offset Picatinny Rail Mount

Personally, I'm a huge fan of offset mounts. Star Wars is rife with offset scopes. It takes a basic scope and makes it just a bit different. Also allows you to do 2 scopes on one blaster. Just make sure you get 2 mounts - I believe this package only came with 1.

Regular scope mounts

1" Scope Mount Low Profile Scope Rings for 11mm Dovetail Rails

Raised/see through scope rings:

45-Degree Offset Angle Rail Mount Picatinny for Flashlights

Here is another nice offset.

M-Lok Offset Flashlight Ring Mount for Mlok Rail System

And another more unique offset.

Here is how mine worked out. I am doing a heavily weathered Desert Ops brigade upgrade, so this has extra weathering. I used dry brushing, silver paint pens, and silver rub and buff (probably my favorite new addition to weathering!) I also like adding just a hint of fold or other metallic color dry brushing... and the heat scoring blued effect was fun. I did all of that with cheapo Wal Mart/Hobby Lobby acrylic paint.

Please show off your airsoft creations and show us how you made them!

Evike has it listed as that; Airsoft GI does not. I found out that when I got mine in and it was shorter than I expected. A couple measurements and some Google-fu later gave me the 3/4 scale.
