3D-printed helmet WIP
« on: Jan 26, 2020, 02:27 AM »
I've printed most of April Storm's free "Drop Bear" Jango helmet (in pieces), and have the main components taped up. This is printed in PLA, and I tried to make the outer shell heavier/thicker than usual, since it isn't the recommended ABS. It seems pretty solid.

I printed at 100% without changing the scale/size. Somebody help me out... does it look right? Seems like there's less room in the dome than I was hoping for. I have nothing to compare it to though, other than what I've seen/read in threads in the forum. Any feedback on the size or appearance is appreciated.

It’s on the smaller side, but would be passable.

For your comfort though, I’d encourage you to size up to 105% and see if that helps

If that is with no padding in the top you'll want to size it up a bit as Jenga suggested though 105% might be too much. Maybe test print just the dome at 103% and see if that sits better.

You could probably change the dome height itself in your slicer to accommodate more of your noggin.

Ok vode, thanks for the pointers... next step will be to lift the dome a little with another few sliced layers, to see if I can make it work without a complete reprint.

::EDIT::

I sliced and printed a couple new layers to raise the dome and make more room... the white stripe between visor opening and dome in the pics. It's only about 3/8-in. difference, but feels better. I taped on most of the ear pieces too, to get a feel for total width.

I'm going to try to make it work this way... so I guess priming/sanding or glue-up would be next?

Progress...
After super-gluing together all main helmet pieces, the seams were fiberglassed on the inside using both resin and mat.

The dome and lower mask were not exactly on registration with each other. I'm guessing this in one of the drawbacks of not printing a solid helmet all at once... the shapes change slightly. The protruding "ring" around the helmet above the visor was not pronounced enough to me, so I've started adding extra material to make it as substantial as I want.

Also decided to modify the lower end on the front. Maybe it's my growing beard, but I felt like there needed to be a margin for error on the bottom to cover my chin. I "sliced" a couple of shim-like sections of the helmet in the 3D slicer I use and printed them, then attached to the helmet. I like the way it covers my face a little better now. The helmet probably could have been reprinted at 2-4% larger scale and solved this problem all at once, but oh well... I'm enjoying modding and customizing this thing. Also started the magical filler-putty work... hooray for that.

I have learned a little Tinkercad, and my brain is now exploding with possibilities. Decided to try a custom earcap for the left side, something that would look like it has a sensor-pod with little scopes and meters and stuff... the print came out really well.

This is looking pretty sweet... checked in after i saw your reply on my post and im digging it..

I notice the gorrilla glue in the background..ill suggest using ips acrylics glue #3 in purple container...

Stuff is amazing..give a little time to reposition but holds quick after contact ..and you only need to use a little  in comparison to how much glue ya have to use.
