New paint job
« on: Oct 23, 2020, 11:56 AM »
Redoing the dome and back on my protector bucket. Here's how it's currently looking, there's a little bit of a reaction, I'll fix that later, I'll let paint dry for a few days before next stage. Needs light grey under coat, green and weathering plus some jaig eyes....and kill stripes. Besides that I need to add some ears and range finder, internals and electronics

 yep   there was a few parts that need work, fix the repair and add the jaig eyes soon too. If the ears turn out ok, need a good bucket to put them on. I didn't really like the back section. I did initially follow Fetts colours with the back being a bit more bluish / teal colour. Don't think I'll be doing that this time. The insides of the mandibles need to be repainted too...black or orange...think orange would be best. Just need to find that colour again

After a little bit of impatience I tried the next stage

At moment I'm just getting a rough idea of what I like, next is more masking and first of a few fett green layers....esb fett green or lighter

Couldn't sleep last night so decided to do abit more shaping of the right ear cap
It's a little bit big at moment, but filing the edges will remove that and smooth the arc as well
Below is black resin cap on top of aluminium cap...shiny area needs to be filed down

Still need to cut the angled areas

That is quite possibly one of the prettiest weathering jobs I've seen. If you don't mind me asking, what method did you use to mask off the damage on the dome, it looks really effective.

Thanks mate, I use what's called the layering method for the order of painting. The masking medium is maskol by humbrol
Hope that helps, yell out if you'd like more info
Here's roughly what it was like before...repainted due to a repair

Other examples of layering and paint approach

Thank you, that's really good to know. I've heard a few people mention humbrol's masking fluid, I'll have to have a nosy when I next get paid.

Good to know  :D . What do you use to apply the masking medium, just a cotton bud or something?

Toothpick for smaller scratches, q-tip for larger. You could use a cotton ball, but that would be a BIG paint chip.

Note on toothpaste: the longer it dries, the harder it is to remove. I advise applying it right before you paint and removing it as soon as the paint is solidly dry. If you wait until the paint is fully cured, it will be a real pain to remove.

Latex mask, on the other hand, has no such limitation. You want it to be dry before you paint, so you can let it sit as long as you want. It’s just more expensive.

Personally I use a sponge, can give a lot of random patterns, fine lines too

Thank you, I'll have to give it a try when it comes to painting my bucket.

Bit of clean up work around the range finder pivot point, the rf stalk is a little thick and prevents the cap sitting flush and the resin wasn't 100% flat. Filing flat to allow the stalk to move freely and also looking at installing a servo. I'd bought a low profile ones few years ago but didn't really get around to installing

A littlest bit of play on the bucket today, mucked around making a stencil for jaig eyes, still need to add the two smaller sections in the middle, the dome still needs another coat or two and further weathering. With jaig eyes I wanted a faded worn away look
