Sola Suumpir - Aquamando! (First WIP)
« on: Jan 23, 2021, 07:47 PM »
Hi all! I posted about 6 months ago about starting an aquatic inspired kit https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=192767.msg2144811#msg2144811

Unfortunately, life, a new job,  and the pandemic all got in the way and things got put on hold for a while. I am finally back and making progress, and the good news is I have continued reading the forums and have learned a lot since then! I'm really excited (and nervous) to finally be making progress!

My concept has changed up a bit from my original post. I decided to go all in on the aquatic aspect and hopefully work towards the aquatic specialist brigade once I meet the CRL requirements  :D The general idea is to take inspiration from Naboo and Mon Cala. The Clone Wars battle of Mon Cala has been great inspiration for aquatic battle gear. The color scheme will be very blue, with accents of white, seafoam, black, and chrome.

So far I have been prioritizing my soft parts so I can get my armor shaped nicely to them. It still needs some tailoring and weathering, but I have the general pieces.
Flightsuit: Is a simple navy blue compression top and leggings.
Vest: Is not 100% finished, but close. It is made of a white scuba fabric with seafoam trim/accents. There is decorative lacing up the sides and it closes in the back with hidden velcro. I wanted it to be just a little bit feminine as a nod to the Naboo aesthetic.
Waist Items: Girth belt is in progress. It still needs to be fitted and I need to add a closure method. It's a little hard to tell in the picture but it is realistic, textured fish scale and meant to be a trophy from an aquatic beast. Also have an ammo belt.
Gloves: are real neoprene diving gloves.
Boots: are basic black Chelsea boots.

Armor: I have my helmet and armor, which is made of sintra. Going for a pretty traditional, medium Jango Fett-style. Still working on final shaping, sanding, and getting things to lay flat.

Weapons: I'm sticking with my original idea of a trident. Working hard to make it look in-universe and not cheesy  :P Rare Arizona rain is slowing down my progress but I will post pics soon. I also have a blaster on my gauntlet.

Aquatic-Specific Additions: I ordered a helmet breathing attachment and plan to get an air tank or two. Not sure if I will have this together for my official member application, but I really want this to solidify the character as someone who is at home in the water. I will have a sonar screen on one of my gauntlets and have ordered a blue visor from Kalevala Visors that I might also illuminate.

Still a lot to do but hopefully I'm heading in the right direction! I am so impressed by everyone's work on here and really appreciate all those who have posted helpful tips.

Stay safe and healthy!

Solid start in my opinion!  Excited to see where you take your concept!

Clearly I am terrible at posting progress updates, but I have been working hard on painting my armor and am feeling pretty excited about how things are going!

Sticking with the aquatic theme, I ended up picking aqua blue, nautical blue, and chrome as my armor color scheme. I added a good amount of damage and abrasions as I felt swimming, diving, and run-ins with beasts would all be pretty rough on the paint job. I also added some overall grime because while most dirt would wash off I wanted to try to give it that feel of water stains and mold/mildew from being in damp environments.

While searching for inspiration I came across some spear fishing wetsuits that had really cool aquatic camo patterns. Along those lines, I did some accent pieces in a dipped, marble style to create my own custom water camo. I unfortunately don't have any pictures of that (incredibly messy!) process but it was definitely the most fun part so far.

Currently in progress are my gauntlets, helmet, spear, and air tank! Planning to post a bunch over the next few weeks! :)
