Boy, building jetpacks is thirsty work...

Let's just pour a nice, refreshing cup of Smoothcast ROTO!

Hrm... this isn't tasty at all!

But it does make a pretty awesome base for the thrusters!

I'll just have to do a bit of detailing on the underside and make the base to mount it to the pack. The final ones will be made with Featherlite rather than ROTO, since ROTO is heavy.

This made me laugh :D. Yet another clever way of making an armor piece. I'm going to have to pay more attention to drink cups and bottles and whatnot.

Did   you  put  another "thing"  into the...  Bottlemold   to  form the innerspace too...    or  do you intend  to  drill  the  inner Space  of the Thrusterpart    out?

I'm drilling out the inside of the thruster. I plan to leave it mostly solid so that it's not so fragile. The resin I'll be casting in is very light, so the weight shouldn't be bad.

This is the bottom view of the thruster:

And here it is assembled:

I have to adjust the tank topper a little bit more before I mold it, but then  I just have to make a mold of the rocket/vent/topper/thruster and cast them up in the light weight resin. Then the pack is done!

Fantastic build! Why is actually doing it never as easy as a WIP thread makes it seem!? D:

Anyway, the lightweight resin that you used for the thruster cones, what was the name of it? I'm thinking of using it to inject my pepakura gauntlets to give them some more strength, but I've never dealt with resin before, so I'd have no idea where to start.

This is the resin:
http://www.smooth-on.com/index.php?cPath=1120_1162

It's odd stuff to work with, but it's really nice in the end. When you open the containers, it's literally solid. Like, tip it upside down and nothing happens. You break it up and stir it until it's liquid again. Wacky.

So here we have paint:

and weathering:

It was tough trying to figure out the paint scheme. Since the concept art pack is a different version than what was used, I didn't want to 100% trust it. I know I got the basics down at least.

I have to add the red details, then do some weathering in browns.

Overall, I'd say this is a successful first scratch built jetpack!

That's a pretty average price for resin.

Yeah. But I'm concerned because shipping for one gallon of it is gonna cost me an arm, since there's two half-gallon buckets to ship. ):

So how are you going to mount your pack?

I made all of it myself. The rocket and other parts were hand made, then molded and cast in resin.

right now the kit is too much of a pain to assemble... we're working on improvements there.

i've made a couple of tweaks and built up a new one for myself. i did this one based on the hasbro figure's paint job... i like it better than the standard, so i figured why not have 2 packs and switch off?
