Magnets instead of holsters?
« on: Jul 25, 2010, 05:09 PM »
I wasn't sure where to ask about this. Is there anything wrong with using magnets to attach larger weapons to say your back? I've browsed around on the costume requirements and didn't see anything about it. I still plan on a pistolish weapon and a holster, but I thought something kind of neat would be a way for a gun to just sit on your back in plain view and not having to carry it.

Hmm...
With a powerful enough magnet... maybe, but Id put some kind of shelf or lip for the gun to sit on, to take the weight off the magnet... just let it hold the gun to your armor.

Might be neat on a thigh mount too... a little cup to hold the weight, then a magnet holding it to your leg... ;D

I'm more than willing to bet a few rare earth magnets would easily hold modded nerf rifle.

I know some people that troop as TKs that use them instead of velcro in some places. I figure worst case I can put a coupld of small holes in my back plate and put them in there as well as on the rifle.

The thigh had crossed my mind as well for a side arm.

the only issue i can see right now , is how to attatch the magnets to the armor, but if the TKs do it, then there is a way . . . but those must be some strong magnets tho if they need a serious case like that. lol

From wikipedia: The greater force exerted by rare earth magnets creates hazards that are not seen with other types of magnet. Magnets larger than a few centimeters are strong enough to cause injuries to body parts pinched between two magnets, or a magnet and a metal surface, even causing broken bones.[5] Magnets allowed to get too near each other can strike each other with enough force to chip and shatter the brittle material, and the flying chips can cause injuries. There have even been cases where young children that have swallowed several magnets have had a fold of the digestive tract pinched between the magnets, causing injury or death.[6] The stronger magnetic fields can be hazardous also, and can erase magnetic media such as hard disks and credit cards, and magnetize the shadow masks of CRT type monitors at a significant distance.

larger ones you have to have a license to handle. lol

Yep...
Stick a couple underneath your scooter and they'll make sure that Traffic lights recognize you too...

   Magnets sure are amazing... ;D

if you've ever seen Mythbusters whenever they are using the rare earth magnets: they are ALWAYS stressing the extreme danger they could potentially face with these.  If they found a body part of theirs between two of the magnets (they usually use the larger ones palm sized or bigger) they risk losing that body part to a crush injury.  Those magnets are definately scary powerful...  but also very useful.   ;)

Also I believe there was a mando...  can't remember the name, but he was using magnets to attach his side arm to his thigh plates.  His system seemed to work.  might be worth a search.   ;D

He was short and stocky and a little mean!
He carried a BFG and wore heavy armor vest
He liked to make credits, they were the best!
Blasting and hunting were all in good fun,
Especially when the prey did try to run!
Then one day the hutt called him to do a job,
Get a nasty little genosian thief named Bob!
Found and bound fast as a blink that little bug,
He got kriffed on the creds that big fat slug!
So I shot him.  With a proton torpedo." --Bazii

Several 405th members use them to mount their pistols and rifles to their armor without velcro or straps and most of the time that is with a decently thick layer of bondo in between them so I would think that with a Sintra layer instead it would work without a problem.

I've thought about this as well. I have a magnet used for holding license plates to cars while on a test drive. I thought about putting it inside a weapon and a medal plate inside my suit, or vise versa. My thought was to have one inside a wooden sword I plan to make and the other inside my back plate to hold it. Either that or with the sidearm on my thigh. Haven't decided which.

I'm not seeing anything on here that says it won't pass, so I'm guessing there's nothing in the regulations about this? That was the initial question after all.

Is it approvable? Sure. My experience with a back mounted Tron identity disc though is that any odd push or twist will pop it right off. Pulling straight away though, and it takes a lot to pull it off.

well considering magnets are how the new ep 7 TKs attach their blasters directly to their armor I would go as far as to say they are now officially cannon!
