Jasher's Jetpack
« on: Jun 24, 2012, 11:49 PM »
So my sister went shopping with my other sister, and she found this:

I am going to cut off the top, and add a rocket; plus with the pocket inside of the main part, I can carry around a camel pack!

The only thing better then this one is the actual mega bloks jetpack. Nice find, can't wait to see what you do with it.

Have a good one,
Hagen

Yes, yes it is.

I shall pass on the hard pack...

Well I made some progress today, mostly because I wanted to play with my new attachment for my dremel, and this was ready and begging to be worked on.

Not entirely sure if I want to cut out and fill in part of the middle in between the tanks, or if I should just find something to stick in there; or just call it good. I also have to figure out what to do at the top, cause right now, it looks rather plain to me.... any ideas?

Awesome find! With a few mods that could look identical to the jet pack Pre Vizsla wears in season 4.

I got some work done today, I know it's been a while, but I am hoping to get this done by Friday.

I have decided on how I am going to attach it, since my back plate is metal I had originally decided to use magnets, however after making an upgrade and using door chains on it. I thought about it again today, and remembered how well this worked; I decided that using these door chains would be a great idea. Combined with a strong magnet, I think it will work great!

What do you all think?

Seems like a good idea. Just place them down low on the jetpack so you can see them.

Did some more work today, had to get new thrusters, so... here we are:

I expect tomorrow to not only get the other top and fin installed, but it ready for sanding, if not sanded.

I have to repair my helmet first though... it fell, knocked out a cheek, my voice amp & visor were knocked out as well. pretty much everything that I installed on the inside last week, is going to have to be redone... Since I have a troop on Saturday, that is taking priority... But I am hoping to have it done sometime this week, if not next week.

So I think I am ready for sanding and paint... I hosted an armor party today, and just about got this thing finished. I need to by one more light, and I should be golden...

I will need to add some foam to the back, so what is left of the screws will not harm my back plate...

I have not been idle for the last week, between making a new girth belt, reattaching some snaps (cold weather makes the glue brittle) and real life, I have found the time to do some work on the jet pack. I want to have it done and ready for next weekend, though I did realize something... I am most likely going to have to make a new gorget sooner than I had anticipated... The way the jet pack sits, it will mess with the current one that I have. So depending on what I can scrounge up in the next few days, will determine if I will wear this next weekend.

So with out further blah blah blahing...
I do have a back plate, it is just currently getting a few more snaps glued to it to keep it held better to my vest.

So I have a question, for those who have jet packs, when you walk, does yours wiggle? I have shortened the chain, and I have a fairly powerful magnet holding it on the bottom as you can see... though it still has a slight wiggle... around the top area... Suggestions? Opinions? Helpful comebacks?

Have you ever considered having a back plate and mounting the disk parts of the locks to that? Or maybe shortening the chains significantly to reduce movement? Or maybe getting rid of the chains and rigging it up with some aircraft cable instead?

I have shortened the chain to 3 small and the one large that is looped through my vest, I am going to get another large magnet, sadly Home Depot is closed.... right now

I found a few more heavy duty magnets, and they will be installed tomorrow. Since I have already knocked off the thrusters a few times... I decided to make a jet pack safety pack.

I may add foam, but for now since I have some extra fleece just lying around... I figure this will help me keep it from breaking during transport.

Yo Mama always seems to be a good comeback :P

But on to the jetpack. As long as your using the chains I think your always going to get some "wiggle from the top". I don't think your going to be able to put enough tention on the chains to keep them from wiggling. Maybe if you used some nylon webbing and hooked the door locks into those, but you'd have to alter the vest for that.
Ori's idea would be sound as well, but you would probably have to re-enforce the vest to support the weight of the backplate and jetpack.

Have a good one,
Hagen

Yeah it's the chains that cause the wiggle. I use "jetpack hooks" which are really the feet of an aluminum paint tray bolted to my jetpack and then those hook to D-rings on my harness. I also prevent additional movement by clipping another strap to my kidney armor.

My jetpack has almost zero maneuverability it sits very stern on my back but it's also being held on by d rings and steel jetpack J-Hooks they don't move but I have a whole harness system with diver buckle like fetts rig.

I've talked with a few others with jet packs, they have said that theirs has some wiggle. I have a test run planned for this Friday, I am going to keep the chains for now, and see if just adding 3 more magnets, will help in any way. I know it's not going to just fall off on me in mid troop... I'm not entirely sure what the pull is on these new magnets, but they feel fairly strong to me.... I'll post my findings tonight after work

It looks like I was right, adding the other three magnets has worked wonders, it has stabilized it on my back plate, and as an added bonus, it looks like the chains will be there purely for a just in case.

I should have pics of me wearing it come Friday.

Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle yeah....

So those magnets are great, keeps it from pulling down on my neck, and holds fairly well. I am extremely grateful for those chains; I did a troop today, and this kid came up behind me and pulled my jet pack off my back plate, these magnets are strong enough that I can jump and it hardly moves... If it were not for those chains, I would be rebuilding my jet pack, and be pretty ticked at this kid... but lesson learned, jet packs not good when around unsupervised children....

There it is, while it is a tad bit crooked... it worked out great tonight.
