So I decided to make a WIP thread on my weapon set for my first kit, since I've gotten a  fair amount of work done on them. I'm going for an Assassin build, and the brigade requirements state that I should have some kind of firearm, blade, and exotic weapon at my disposal. I knew I wanted a pistol and a gauntlet-mounted vibroblade immediately, and after a bit of research I found a Wookiepedia page on a lovely weapon called a blastsword. It was love at first site, and I knew that it would be my exotic weapon.

For more info on the blastsword, here's a link to the Wookiepedia page: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Blastsword
And the only reference picture I can seem to find of it:

Anyway, the purpose of this thread is to go into great detail about how I am creating/modding my weapons, both for feedback and constructive criticism to help me improve, and to provide stepping stones for anybody who would wish to create similar weapons. Those of you who have seen my armor WIP thread will recognize some of the pictures posted here, but not all, as this thread will be much more in depth on the weapons than the other one.

Anyway, enough rambling, let's begin! I think I'll start by posting where these weapons started off, and then giving them their own detailed posts.

So here's what my pistol started off looking like when I found it in my brother's toy pile:

This was originally a laser tag pistol, one of a set of two. The wire you see coming off of it extended to a little chest plate that you would strap on, and whenever you got hit the silver parts of the gun would "shock" you. Kind of a fun toy, and you certainly knew when you hit the other person, but it's tagging days are over, and by the time I'm done with it it will be transformed into a weapon perfectly suited for my Mando.

Here's a look at the other side of it. As you can see, the slide on top actually slides back and forth, and a spring on the inside pushes it back into place with a satisfying *clack*. I fully intend on that specific feature to be fully intact at the end of the build, here's hoping I don't screw it up somehow! The writing you see on the side there is only painted on, and there are no engraved markings or logos of any sort. These of course will be covered, and all screw holes will be filled as per the CRLs, once I'm done needing them.

And to finish up for now, here's the concept sketch I did for my personal blastsword design:

It's kind of scratchy and messy, sorry. It was done in my pocket sketchbook in pen, and then had it's picture taken with my phone. It's rather similar to the reference picture, just a few tweaks here and there, a little thinner and more streamlined. I didn't really want to stray to far with it's design, as it's already kind of an obscure weapon, and I wanted it to be at least a little recognizable for those who knew what to look for.

And as for the vibroblade, here's the rub: I actually haven't started that yet! I have ideas running around left and right, but I don't actually want to start working on it until I get my right gauntlet finished. I kind of want to make it out of 1/4" MDF, and give it the appearance of being sharp, without it actually being to sharp...we'll see how that goes.

Alright, so let's go through what I have done on my blastsword so far. I took the picture of the sketch that you see above and put it into photoshop, got rid of everything but the outline, trimmed that up a bit, and resized it to what it would be in actual size. I think I remember setting the length of it to about 42" or so. Anyway, I took that file and put it through a poser-making program I have and printed it out. Once the pages were printed, I cut out the outline, taped the pieces together, and Ta-Da! Instant blastsword template! I then took that, traced it out on a sheet of 1/2" MDF and cut the rough outline out with a jig saw.

I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do with my pommel or the tip of my cross guard at that point, so I left myself a little bit of wiggle room there. That cleared up after a little bit of thinking and a little more cutting, at which point I also cut the hammer and trigger out of my 1/2" base, as I wanted these pieces to be thinner. I ended up tracing those onto 1/4" MDF and cutting those out.

Those will be woodglued into place once I finish the work on my hilt.

I knew that I wanted my barrel to be 1" PVC pipe, and I wanted it to kind of grip onto the top of the blade, which is 1/2" thick. So I cut a test piece of PCV, and cut a 1/2" gap out of it with a dremel. After trimming the frontsight section off the 1/2" base, I gave my pipe section  testfit, and it fit wonderfully! So I stuck the couplings on it that I'm using as my muzzle and realized that I had to cut a bit more into the blade for the couplings to fit snug.

Fun Fact: this blastsword is approximately two pugs long.

Fierce creatures, they are.

Anyway, so I soon got the tip cut the way it needs to be, and I cut out the proper length of PVC and dremeled it to fit over.

I'm rather pleased with how it all fits together, The outer coupling wasn't quite meant to fit over the inner coupling, so I'm going to need to secure the outer one with glue at some point. After that, I worked on cutting out 1/4" MDF pieces to raise the guard area up a bit, give it some dimension.

The guard pieces line up with the PVC pipe almost perfectly, which will make smoothing everything over that much easier later on when I'm trying to get it to look like one piece.  Note that the trigger and hammer still aren't attached in the above picture.

So this is what it looked like the last time I took a full picture of it. It has since had the blade sanded down to an edge, and the guard pieces were sanded just a bit before being glued to the base.

The guard will be sanded to an edge, the hilt will have thin pieces added to give it some dimension and grip, the corners of the hilt will be sanded down to make gripping more comfortable, and I'm thinking about experimenting with putting lights in there somewhere.

Thanks, glad you enjoy it! And there might have been some confusion along the way, but the blastsword and laser tag pistol are two separate weapons, one for each hand. Sorry for that mixup! I'll post my work on the laser tag pistol soon, hopefully tonight.

I like the blastsword

Thanks! I do to, I'm excited to get more work done on it when I have the time.

Until then, here's the rundown on the (small amount of) work I've done to my pistol!

I started off knowing that I wanted to mount a bayonet onto this thing, and I had a pretty good idea where I wanted to put it. So I laid the pistol out on a small scrap of 1/2" MDF, traced out the parts of the pistol it would be interacting with, and drew the design from there. Here's what it looked like before I cut it out:

And after, positioned about where it would be located once all is said and done:

I realized after I drew the placeholder details that I drew the little "vents" angled the opposite way. Oh well! That part will probably be greebed up with a piece of sintra anyway, and I can drill the vents the right way when I get to that. Also note that the bayonet blade has had some very rough sanding applied at that point.

So after a bit more sanding on the bayonet to clean it up, I decided it was time to gut all the original electronics from the pistol. So after  few minutes with a screwdriver, I managed to get it open without breaking anything (or more importantly, messing with the spring for the slide!) and this is roughly what it looked like:

Now, me knowing hardly a lick of anything concerning the internals of electronics, I had no idea what I was looking at, though I was pleasantly surprised by all the pretty colors! Before I ripped out pretty much anything electronic, as well as the orange plastic backing for the side vents, and both original barrels. Here's what it looked like after I screwed everything back together and put the bayonet roughly in place:

It certainly felt a bit lighter after my gutting. I plan on installing another main barrel using some PVC pipe I have lying around, and using the bottom barrel for the bayonet mount. With that thought in mind, I nabbed myself a wooden dowel that was roughly the same thickness as my bayonet, drilled a 7/16" hole into the mount side of the bayonet with a power drill, sanded down a bit of the dowel so that it would fit snug, and stuck 'em together! They fit together rather nicely, although I still need to glue them together permanently.

I also found a bit of PVC pipe that was pretty much the perfect thickness for the hole I had to work with. I was a bit generous with the length when I cut that section down, as I'm still not quite sure how long I want the barrel to be.  It looks good at that length, but I'd actually like to be able to (potentially) stab people with this bayonet instead of just chopping them.

To finish up for now, here's a closer pic of the bayonet mount:

Next time: the quest for decent muzzle brakes!

Normally it's people trying to "OMG I WANA BE CYPHER-MANDO!" You won me over by doing one of the two canon depictions of the weapon, even though the one you chose happens to be the one I like less. You're keeping it close to the original design, as opposed to taking a boken or a 30 dollar sword and putting a pvc pipe on it. You're making something from the ground up, and I always approve of that.

Thanks! I was actually rather ecstatic when I first found mention of these blastswords somewhere on the forums, and the picture above is the only one I've ever been able to find of them. Would you mind posting the other canon depiction of them up here so I might take a look at it? If I like it, I'll end up making a second blastsword off of that design at some point in the future! Most of my props for all of my costumes have been built from the ground up, minus the pistol you see above, so I appreciate that outlook of yours!

If I might make a suggestion to your current design, it looks as if there is about a quarter inch of blade above the blaster tube as well.

I noticed that as well Taglar, good eye. That is one of the things I tweaked out with my personal design, and so I won't be adding the extra blade across the length of it, although I did think long and hard about it. I will, however, be fashioning the front sight (which will be located on top of the muzzle section) so that it appears to be sharp, kind of as a reference to what is seen above. I haven't really started work on that particular piece yet, but you can see the gist of what it will look like in the picture with the pug size reference above.

They were depicted in the novel has having long, straight, thin blades, basically like a longsword or rapier, which makes a whole hell of a lot more sense as a dueling weapon than the big cutlass looking things we have actual pictures of.

Alright, quick pistol update/questionnaire. So I trimmed down the length of the pistol barrel just a bit so that my bayonet tip actually extends past it. This is by no means the definite final length of the barrel, and most of it will be covered with the body extension I'm working on. I'm currently toying with the idea of adding a pvc coupling to the end of my barrel to give it kind of a.muzzlebrake look, and after a quick trip to Lowes I have a few to choose from, and I was wondering what your opinions were:

Here it is as of right now with the trimmed barrel, no coupling attached. Pardon the crooked barrel in these pics, there wasn't anything on hand to support it.

And here are the different couplings attached:

*Edit Note: Sorry, derped, on the link for one of the pics above, fixed that problem!*

So I've decided to also use this thread for weapons I'm either making or have a heavy hand in helping make for some other local shinies. My cyar'ika, Abiik Krie, wants to go for a heavier loadout, and she desperately wants an assault cannon-thing to go with her kit. I've been meaning to start work on it for a while, and so I headed to Lowe's earlier today to grab some of the PVC components I plan on using for the build. About $76 later, I have this:

The two pieces above and below the main body are stand ins for the mounting for the horizontal forward grip I will be implementing so this thing can be held gatling-gun style. It's going to go through some major aesthetic changes as I continue working on it, but there's the gist so far!

Alrighty, time for more blastsword progress!

First off, gluing the hilt:

You'll notice that parts of the guard have been lightly sanded, just because I didn't know how hard it would be to get to them once they were glued on. I'm glad I did, finishing them up was kind of tricky!

Here's a shot of them completely attached:

They also double as sights for looking down the barrel, which I thought was cool, being me. I doubt this thing would even have enough range to  justify sights, but I have 'em!

I also added two thin pieces of wood to either side of the grip, to give it a bit more dimension and make it a tad easier to handle with gloves on.

I went on to finish up the sanding on the guard, giving it a slight edge that lined up with the blade.

I'm rather pleased with how it turned out, for some reason I was really worried about messing this part up. Might needs some touch-up work before I declare it officially done.

I went on to glue on the hammer and the trigger with some wood glue, and here it is as of right now:

It's getting close to being done, which has me excited. Still toying with the idea of putting lights in it, but in the interest of time I think I'm just gonna fill in the gap between the pipe and sight with some epoxy, glue on all the fittings, and finish up the front sight. What do you guys think?

I get what you mean, though from what I gathered Frost was more displeased with people trying to make excuses for low-quality, cross-over swords and such. As long as you keep the canon references in mind and build most of it yourself, I'm sure he will approve. Though I personally support adding a bit of your own flair into the design when you do start working on yours, make it your own, within reason!

On that note, I would recommend holding out until you can find 1/2" MDF, as I personally think that is already pushing the plausible thickness for a blade, especially one originally meant for dueling. Just my opinion on that note though.

Are you going to sheath that thing? Or lug it around? Looks pretty neat.

Thanks Karvas! And I plan on making some kind of sheath-like item for this thing, yes. I'm thinking I'll cut and shape a bit of sintra into something that would attach to my belt and I would be able to clip around the blade between the seration-pointy bit in the blade and the guard, maybe secured with buttons or the like? It's not on my immediate to-do list, though I certainly do have plans for it.
