Finally got to work on the actual plates for my kit, using the Ronan's Legacy template as a guid since I'll have to make a few changes to allow for my smaller frame.

Here's the chest and ab templates laid out.

The plating is 16 gauge steel recycled from my old community college, the IT department was cleaning house and found a few dozen under-desk computer cases so I grabbed what I could carry.

And after a few hours of cutting and grinding I have one upper chest plate to be used as a guide for making a second one!

Before you go any further, I can strongly recommend taping the templates to yourself and posting pics to see what the size is like. I'd be gutted to see you put loads of work in only to have to start chopping it down.

I'll get on that next, if you look at the template pic you'll see extra lines on the pieces, that's where I had to trim down the pieces so they would fit. Originally with just the collar and chest plates the whole getup hung down to my navel. I ended up trimming a half inch off the edges of every piece all around so it wouldn't look like I was wearing a dress.

Yeah, that's why I was concerned. The Legacy templates I see are more often than not on the rather large side.

Yeah, that's why I'm only using the template as a guide, just to get plate placement and shape right, which is why I haven't pieced the template into anything wearable. The one plate I have worked on still needs some work until I'm down to the guide lines I put on it, but it's the right size for me as it just covers my ribs with space for the ab plates to attach.

One thing I did notice, the hammer marks on the plate look like blaster impact points, instant weathering while I work!

Got me a flight suit today, think I might dye it black but not 100% on that. As to the look on my face, this is what happens when my wife tells me to smile- I get sarcastic.

I found this little number at a second-hand store, I see some potential here for modding it into a DL-44 or something similar.

Working on the collar plate I've decided to make it in two pieces and attach them to each other, now I can either weld them, or rivet them together, which option is LEAST likely to get me dinged by the app team?

Yesterday's progress- both chest plates are now cut and shaped, still have to polish off the firescale but that will come later when I'm ready to start attaching them to my flak jacket.

How'd I miss this build?!

Looking good so far.  I'd advise riveting your plates and keeping them attached via backing straps as opposed to welding them.  Trust me, when you weld the suckers together, you're going to lose a good deal of range of motion.  On the other hand, if you do end up welding your plates, you'll turn yourself into an unstoppable juggernaut/ crowd control Mando.  I've been used to clear paths before because my armor is pretty close to unbreakable.

Another point to consider- welding or riveting your plates to one another will allow you to have a "floating" kit; that is, very little is attached to the actual vest itself.  A 16-gauge steel kit will be with you as long as it continues to fit, and will far outlast your vest.  It's a worthwhile idea to cut out the extra step of having to re-mount your plates when and/or if your vest wears out.

Thanks for the input Cin, I hadn't considered putting my armor together like that but I suppose I should have for the sake of simplicity. I was considering having the collar welded since it's kinda on the long side so I'd have to make two separate pieces (front and back) and then attach them so it becomes a single solid piece. I was already going to have the back plates attached to the collar but i think I'll go with what you suggested and mount the whole getup to the collar, that way if/when I make another kit all I have to do is strap on the plates over the existing soft parts and I'll be good to go.

I have some leather straps I plan on using to attach all the plates, I figure I have it I may as well use it.

Soooo.... I pieced the templates together, and this is what I found.

Yes, that bottom lame is JUST above my belly button and all the pieces are overlapping, this tells me one of two things-

1) This torso armor is going to be simpler than I thought since I won't need as many plates (thank you mom & dad for being dominantly shorter than the average American)

OR

2) I screwed up somewhere and have to recut my chest plates, which is no problem if that IS  the case since I have plenty of plating left.

Can anyone tell me one way or the other?

The angle of the shot is a little off, but it looks like you chest plates might be a little off.  Being short here also means you get to use less material, and have less of a struggle lining everything up, though.

So I was taking apart the pistol I found and it should be fairly simple (I think) to make it more closely resemble a DL-44 or a Power-5 blaster, which essentially has me covered for a sidearm. This however, leaves me with what to use for a primary weapon.

I had considered a shatter rifle, A280, A295, proton carbine, and a bowcaster. I'm kinda leaning towards a bow caster at the moment, mainly because I have material on hand to rig the general shape of one and if nothing else I could rig up the one I have with a few small modifications (adding a longer stock, scopes, polarizing pods, and barrels) into a hopefully passable bowcaster. Any input from anyone who has done any of these would be incredibly helpful.

Gonna bump this a bit.
After a horrific series of mishaps, medical setbacks, mechanical failures, moving, and countless other impediments, my kit is once again in the works! I'm currently working at a half pace due to some medical issues but weapons for this kit are being worked on in what little spare time I have. I've taken the liberty of going over the forums and various wookiepedia entries for weapons and equipment info and I hope to have a blaster ready early next week, rifle in the near future.
Thank you MN Mando's (both OM's and UM's) for the many ideas and support, I WILL be fully geared by summer.

Either or is fine. A neat/invisible weld line would be better and as long as the rivets are painted and/or weathered to match the plates.

Hide the rivets on a Legacy kit? I thought those were ok on these kits?
