First timer WIP scratch build
« on: Jun 25, 2015, 06:46 PM »
So heres the design

and heres the template at present

Can anyone give me some idea as to the scale of this as it feels kinda big but i don't want to have a finished product that restricts my ability to have a human sized head either :S also, this is a scratch build, do you recommend card, resin and body filler or sintra? thanks!

It looks fine for now vod and you can use any of the things you asked about, use what you are comfortable using. 5 gallon buckets also work in a pinch. Lol

Thanks, I think I'll use this size and go ahead with the card and resin since I have some around and have used it a little before on an  sith acolyte helm. Might try the homer build you mention for a Mark 2 when I'm a little more experienced with Sintra and plastics

Buckets are easier than sintra vod, they aware curved already and only need a little coaxing in order to get them into shape.

With the 5 gallon bucket, what do you do to get the dome?

They aren't required but are a nice way to vent the hot air from the helmet!

They aren't?! I didn't know that! Well they look cool and the ventilation  sounds like a bonus too, I'll post more pictures when I'm done with the resin.

What are you using as the filler to sand?

Have you fiberglassed the inside?

Long time no update! Think I fixed the weak points

few layers of Primer applied, and ears attached including a comms antenna, just sanding them a touch then its more paint!

You're doing pretty well so far, keep it up.

If I may, I just want to caution you about overusing your bondo on your work, you're making it much harder for yourself if you have to sand off mountains of bondo. It's better to have too little and work up, than have too much and have to sand it all down again.

I think you may need to work on the pitting in your bondo, there are two ways to do this.

1. lightly go over the pits with bondo to fill them, then sand them back.

2. Use a low grit sandpaper to buff those pits out.

When sanding you want to go from a low grit and slowly get higher as you go along, making small corrections.

Hope that helps you.
