Wolfman's Soft Parts WIP
« on: Jul 22, 2015, 07:30 PM »
Starting my soft parts WIP because I'm waiting on some talented mandos to mail my armor and bucket. I have always been pretty good at hand sewing but this is the first time I have ever sewn anything from a pattern on a machine. I had LOTS of help but did most of the sewing myself. Found a coverall pattern at my girlfriends moms house and grabbed some fabric that was close enough to what I had envisioned... It was on sale at Joann so that helped too. Totally skipped anything in the pattern that mentioned pockets and kind of MacGuyvered the leg part so that side pockets were gone. Put about 14 hours of trial and error and re-sizing and a lot of words that aren't forum appropriate into this thing. At one point I had even sewn the arms into the sides so I had a dumb looking wing suit. Decided to go with the mando double sleeve so I used the long sleeve and short sleeve options from the pattern and sewed them over each other. OK, enough blabbing, here's what I have.

Now I just have to find some fabric for my flak vest and sew that, get my holster and boots and dye my gloves and I should be good on soft parts.

Had you not said you had made it yourself, I would have guessed you had bought one off the rack.  Good job!   8)

I'm not always the most observant as I missed that it had double sleeves and no pockets for a little bit though.

Judging by your flightsuit, you are going to be fine on your vest.

I had to learn to sew and my first real sewing project was my vest.  I made it in the style of the bullet proof vests.  Goes on over your head and then fastens on both sides with velcro.  Even with that simple of a design, I had to repeatedly tweak it to fit as the vest came out a little off the first time... and like the four times after that.  LOL   Finally I got that right and with the additions of the neck seal and the extra fasteners in the form of parachute buckles and a hidden zipper under the front to keep the back from moving around I finally had a decent vest.

...after about two months of work.  LOL

Hopefully it won't take me 2 months! I'd like to have OM soon so I can troop with the clan! Anyone have any suggestions for making a girth belt? Not really sure how to start.

Girth belt would depend on how you want to do it.  Some use the rope method like Boba and Jango but others like me just use a wide fabric sort of belt to wrap things up neatly and fill that space between the torso and cod armor.  It is a personal preference on that.

There are examples of both forms of girth belts here on the forums as a few have made the ropes method from scratch if that is the way you want to go.   ;D

If you're thinking of doing a rope-based girth belt, check out this tutorial.

Haven't made progress in a while but here are some soft parts I just picked up.

UPDATE

Here's my current belt setup. The container next to the ammo pouch on the side view is padded hard plastic and fits my glasses perfect. Not sure if I want to hang holsters off the ammo belt or have a separate pistol belt.

Made my vest! Built in neck seal and "quilted" shoulder detail. Zips up the back.

girth belt and ammo pouches look great.

the only thing i would tweak on your vest is try making a dart in the armpits, kinda puckering up a bit. but looks awesome man.

i have the fabric to remake my vest in a heavy cotton, but im afraid to do it and mess it up LOL, thinking i might have to send it your way!!

Thanks! I just modified an old Halloween costume pattern. The only part that messed with my brain was putting a lining into it. My girlfriends mom works from home so I just go over and use her sewing machine and she rescues me when I freak out. It helps to have someone more experienced around for those oh crap moments.
