After 2 years it's finally time to retire my old kit and start making a new one.
It'll be rather heavy armor, I was thinking of 2 color schemes:
or
(http://i.imgur.com/CsmxKEP.png)
Still not sure which one is better, but probably I'll change my mind at least 5 times and end up doing completely different paint scheme
I started with making belt and all that leather stuff, after 2 weeks I got this:
It's my 1st attempt at leather working so I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. It's still not ready ofcourse, I have to sew some pieces of leather together & make holster. Also I'll probably dye it to darker brown.
Comments & criticism are always welcome :)
-
Nice leatherwork! That's something I gotta get into one of these days.
As for color scheme, I kinda like the second one ;D
-
Thanks Kavryn :)
Started my new helmet a while ago, here's the result of several weeks of work:

The dome was sculpted in clay & the rest of the helmet was made with 3 mm sintra.
It's all very rough, also dome needs some reshaping, but other than that I'm quite happy with the results so far.
-
Well I personally like the second design better :) glad to see you back at work ;) I dig the helmet, looking forward to seeing it complete!
Oya!
-
Belt/harness looks awesome. I vote for color scheme 1.
-
Thanks guys ;D
Cheeks are almost done:

-
Really digging the boxed out cheeks, like the look better then the rounded style.
-
Vor'e Oren ;) I wanted to create something between standard Boba and assassin/destroyer buckets + I feel like that kind of cheeks gives helmet more agressive & intimidating look.
-
I've always liked a sharper look, I have to agree it looks more agressive.
-
Ahh! Square cheeks! Be still, my beating heart! :D
I've always been a fan, and yes, they do make the helmet look so, so much meaner. Keep up the good work, vod!
-
Commenting for updates. That helmet looks solid.
-
Looking great vod! The leather work is awesome and that helmet is gorgeous, super clean work!! I'm also digging the second color theme. :)
-
Finally I managed to make some progress with my new bucket.
Ears, rangefinder & back panel are done so everything is ready for bondo now.
I taped ears to bucket to see how it looks and took a few pics of it:

Wow! :o
Really nice work on the helmet vod!! Super clean lines. :D
-
Thanks Vod ;D.
-
Jealous of that leather work and bucket.
Well done!
-
Amazing work on the bucket vod!
Really liked your 1st kit so I'll certainly keep an eye on this build :D
-
Those cheeks look so awesome vod ;D I vote for color scheme one, it just looks really good ;D
-
I vote color scheme #2. And those cheeks are awesome. I'll have to do that for my second bucket
-
Ori'vor'e Vode ;) glad you like it.
First layer of bondo was done yesterday, now it's time for my most hated favourite part - sanding , though I will have to wait for better weather so I can sand it outside.
In the meantime i started building handplates, inspired by airborne DW troops:
(the darts will be repainted)
Also I decided to choose the second color scheme (and modify bucket's colors a bit):
After the helmet will be casted I'll add forehead plate (probably will make it out of layered sintra [Fenn Rau & new stormtroopers from Rogue One were my inspirations]). I Think it'll give it quite a unique look.
-
That hand armor/darts is awesome! Great idea, vod! I may have to make something similar.
-
Hey guys :)
I'm still alive & working on my bucket.
At the moment I'm almost done with bondo/sanding phase (minus the ears & rangefinder, because they need much more work) . All i have to do now is to correct dome's shape in few spots & smooth everything out.

Hope you like it.
-
I really like the design of the Rebels helmets. Can't wait to see how this turns out.
-
This is some really clean solid work! This is an awesome WIP!
-
Thanks guys :)
Almost ready:

Ears are almost done too, just need to prime them (pics soon).
Next week I'll be ordering molding/casting supplies...finally
-
Looks really good, I'll be interested to see when you do a run  keep up the good work
-
wow, super clean build!
-
It took me almost a year, but now I can proudly present you a first cast of my helmet ;D

I think it was totally worth all that time and money I spent for it.
Sure, it's not perfect - it was my first attempt at roto-casting so it has some imperfections like minor dome distortion and uneven interior but other than this it looks fine to me.
Soooo...what do you think Vode? :)
-
That is super impressive man 8) 8) 8)
I have mad respect for anyone who does a scratch build, really clean build right there, and so is that cast! Looks really nice!
-
THe helmet looks awesome. Are you going to be selling casts?
-
Thanks Vhett, that means a lot coming from a pro like you :)
Torolf - vor'e Vod ;), as for your question - sure, I just need a week or two to finish the rangefinder and then I'll be opening thread in supply depot. So if you're interested just hit me with PM ;)
-
This thread needs some helmet appreciation!
I bought Vassk's first production run helmet and I gotta say - it's a top notch work of art!
* It's solid.
* Just look at the way earcaps fit, look!
(http://i64.tinypic.com/10wmvkx.jpg) (http://i65.tinypic.com/28vemh4.jpg)
* It's not all - the helmet has plenty of space inside - I wear a 7 1/4" hat and I can put it on without touching cheek plates.
* Integrated top right earcap piece - brilliant.
Whole set:

Let me tell you - there's a new player in town!
-
Man! i kind of want one!
-
Update time!
I'm finally getting back to work, already bought sintra so I should have all the hard parts ready by the end of next month.
Also, I totally changed the concept of my armor - I'm going to do a heavy Boba-inspired armor (my main inspriations are PP1, HS and McQuarrie's/Johnston's concept arts).
This is what I have so far:
(belt and pouches need some more weathering, blaster's in very early stage of sanding)
(leather spats & M56 [shoretrooper] pouch)
Started working on my knees and cod plate several days ago, I'll make some photos soon.
-
Very nice! I look forward to watching this! 8) 8) 8)
-
Thanks Vhett ;)
First parts are primed and ready for paint

Update! (finally)
Knees are now fully painted

My bucket is almost finished, here's a WIP thread https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=149476.0 (https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=149476.0)

I started to weather soft parts (with shoe polish)
I like the results so far, but I'll be adding more grime to make them really dirty.
I believe that size of plates is ok, but I could use some feedback here. Are they approvable or should I trim them?
Don't worry about spacing here and that chesplate will be reshaped a bit to fit me better.
-
The chest plate looks a little large but I want to see it after you reshape it.
Paint app on knees and helmet is awesome.

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuus. Now this is what I call a bucket! *double thumbs up* Well done sir. I am also slightly partial to those Jaig eyes haha. Also, you might have mentioned this previously in this thread but what happened to that custom belt/pouches you had posted on your first page of this build?
-

Here's another pic of the chest (sorry for poor quality)
I'm not sure how much I can trim it since I already made those dents near the edge of the plate. Any ideas?
And do I really need to trim the chest?

Thanks Vod, your helmet looks great too ;)
As for the old pouches - I just didn't like them, the quality wasn't as good as I would like to, so I replaced them with different pouches. I would love to upgrade to classic Boba pouches though, but gotta save some money first.
-
Bucket bros!!! I would say that maybe the under portion next to the ab plate might just be a little to thick. I think it will be easier to tell once you get the other chest plate done and mock attached to your vest. That way we can see everything together. I am stoked to see this come together vod! Also, are you painting with an airbrush?
-
Width wise the chest looks fine, but it will be easier to tell one the other one is there. Length wise though, the chest may be too long. It’s getting real close to the ab.
Again, hard to tell until both are present.
-
Such a clean build of the bucket! I wish I had that much patience and skill! Nice work Vod!

Yup, I'm using gravity feed airbrush (cheapest model I could find ) and I'm painting with humbrol enamels.

Sure, I'll try to take better pics with both chest plates on.

Vor'e Vod. It's not that hard, you should try making your own helmet one day ;)
BTW that first cast was a b-pull, my current helmets are a lot better ;)
That bucket is looking great. Well done.
Thanks :)

I'm getting a Protector vibe from this....and I love it! ;D
-
Totally dig the color scheme, very much reminiscent of the prepro Fett colors, I love it!

Right? So good! Build faster!!! lol
-
That bucket is gorgeous bud, very well done. The soft parts are looking great as well, and your new armor seems to be coming along well. On the sizing of your plates, where does the bottom hem of your vest come to? You'll wanna tweak the shaping on the collar and chest so they lie flat, but the width looks like it's good. The length, on the other hand, either the chest is too long, or you just have a short vest and will have your ab plate hanging off or just touching the bottom of it. I'm a few years out of touch, having just started getting back into the swing, but if I recall correctly Boba's vest goes to the navel and Jango's is a bit longer. If you don't want your ab plate pushed off the bottom, you'll have to shave the chest plate down a bit in the sections to sit next to it and maybe shave your ab plate down a bit.

Funny you mentioned protectors Mi'ix - I really wanted to make a protector kit, but my custom bucket isn't approvable for that brigade, so I had to change my plans  But maybe one day...

Thanks Vhett ;) PrePro Fetts are my main inspirations, so if you're seeing similarities then I'm doing it right :P
Right? So good! Build faster!!! lol
I wish I could work faster Vod, but real life keeps slowing me down :-X maybe next month I'll be able to spend more time working on this kit.
Anyway, I made some progress since last time -
Shoulders are now fully painted
(https://i.imgur.com/b4GF6lP.jpg)
As you see I picked PP1/2 skull instead of standard mythosaur skull. I like it much better and it's more unique than commonly used ESB/ROTJ versions.
The symbols on right shoulder are based on Joe Johnston's concept art
(https://i.imgur.com/VyylH8C.jpg?1)
The cape was weathered with scissors, sandpaper, acrylics and shoe polish
(https://i.imgur.com/6CKEOMR.jpg)
And I finished the first stage of building my gauntlets
(https://i.imgur.com/W6zgpHD.jpg)
Now it's time for some bondo and sanding.
-
Oh man, I am loving all of this. All of this forever please haha This is looking amazing
-
 Thanks Vod. I try to do my best to achieve the highest quality I can.
Forgot to mention that earlier, but I'll be aiming for gunslinger profession with this kit.
-
Nice gauntlets there!
-
Dope man, just dope.
-
Thanks guys.
Chest is mostly done and ready for sanding and priming.
Though I may move the ab plate several millimeters up.
-
Made a lot of progress since last time, but no pics today. You'll have to wait a few weeks more for them :P
I got a question guys. What do you think about using satin fabric for the vest? I've seen some guys from TDH using it as a replacement for tackle twill (which is impossible to find here in Poland :( ). It's shiny sure, but do you think it could look good on a custom mando costume? Here's an example of satin vest (pic borrowed from Raizo's Fett WIP on TDH forum)
I really would like to mimic the shine of fabric on e.g. the PrePro vest:
I'd probably make the new vest a bit looser, just like in Boba costume.
Any ideas? Should I go for light gray satin or stay with the old vest?
-
I'm not a fan of the idea of satin, but to each their own. Have you considered waxed canvas? It'll give you the sheen you're looking for while keeping a sturdy/tough look. Personally, I think satin looks like it belongs on a prom dress, not a flack vest.
-

Hahaha fantastic. I think you might be able to do it justice with some good weathering but yeah, might be tough to make it look like believable hardy material.
Also, I hear a lot about this "progress business but pics or it didn't happen lol :<3:
-
Good ol' tackle twill.
If you're making holes for a jetpack or your plate attachment method, it does tend to rip so make sure you've got the edges of your cut sealed with some stitching or fray check.

That's good to know. Thanks Mi'ix! :)

Have faith Vod, you'll see the progress pics in the near future ;) Just need a new camera as, thanks to my cat lol, the old one's broken now.

You may have a point Vod. I'll try to find that waxed canvas you're talking about to see how it's looking.
Anyway, I've contacted A&J Projects (https://www.facebook.com/ajprojects/ (https://www.facebook.com/ajprojects/)) and ordered new vest. Those guys are real pros when it comes to sewing SW stuff, so I'm sure my new vest will look georgeous.
It probably won't be made out of satin, A&J promised to look for fabrics that could work best for a pre pro style vest. I also spotted one fabric in my local store that I specially like. It's a coat type smooth fabric, similiar to the fabric of snowspeeder flightsuits from ESB (though it's not orange  ) 100% polyester so it has the sheen I want. If A&J won't find anything better I think I'll most probably go that way.
-
I'm back :boba:
Had some pretty tough time this year, so there's not much progress since last time, but I didn't abondon this project and that's most important for me.
Anyway, I made new, smaller set of chest plates using RafalFetts templates:
(You can also see my new vest here)
My backplate's almost ready too, just need to reshape it a bit in the shoulder area so it fits my collar better (I'll have collar studs as attachement method for the back so it needs to be aligned perfectly).
At the moment I'm more focused on building my sidearm: https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=170276.0 (https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=170276.0) but after its done I'll be back to working on my armor.
BTW I decided not to go gunslinger way with this kit. After reading BRL numerous times I felt like it would only limit me, so no brigades this time.
-
I like the sound of the new direction you are taking! New vest looks good too btw :)
-
That's fair. Could always be a rogue protector or full protector if those plates are a real dark green :8):
