Title: Soft Parts WIP
Post by: Xundor Wrex on May 01, 2016, 05:47 PM
I don't have much to put here just yet. Have been focusing on my armor and bucket primarily. I have a flight suit, gloves, and the beginnings of a girth belt (burlap, duct tape, and hot glue). The girth belt looks terrible right now, but I still have quite a bit of work to do on it (obviously). I intend to dye it light brown to match the rest of the belt (not including the bright blue belt; hopefully, that will tie my armor color scheme into the soft parts).

As far as lower half, I'm probably going to shell out a little more for some laceless work boots of some kind. Other costumes in the past have taught me one thing, keep your feet comfortable. So, knowing that I'll probably be on my feet a lot while trooping (if I make it to OM status), I really want to ensure my dog won't be howling. Any suggestions? Wolverine? Red Wing?

Was also thinking about spats of some kind on the lower legs. I really like the look of the spats Cap wore when he was Steve Rogers: Agent of Shield.

As for my vest, I have a couple of friend's that sew and I'm seeing if either of them will take a commission to make it for me.

Anyway, that's all for soft parts for now. Suggestions?

Your soft parts look like they're pretty on point, but we'll know for sure once we get a picture of them on you.

I like your girth belt alot.  It looks like you added support for the strands in those brown straps, but have you considered sewing on an additional strap of fabric along the backside for additional stability?  The only reason I mention this is because my girth belt is constructed almost the same way and after a few troops some of the strands are already coming apart.

And yes, comfortable feet are key!

Thank you. There is still much to be done with the girth belt. I intend to do more vertical strips as well as one long horizontal strip. But finding time to do that is the hard part. Eventually, I would like to get one of my sewing friends to stitch it for added durability.

Tried on most of what I had this evening to get an idea of how it looked so far.
I have a jumpsuit, but I really want to try to use scrubs if possible. The lighter blue undershirt is just a placeholder for now. Trying to get some scrub pant legs sewn into the sleeves to get the look of the Fett suits.
The duckcloth best came in the other day and fits just right.
Toying with the idea of a cod piece as well as a loin cloth of some sort (and interchange them as needed).
Anyway that's all for now.

New gloves finally came in. The previous gloves were looking a little too BMXy. These still have some BMXness, but these are better because they allow me to use touchscreen devices!! :D
Sadly, they do have an O logo on the back, but that's nothing a little piece of velco armor won't cover.

Great start to your soft goods! If you're unsure about what to do for the spats, pheonix made a great tutorial for making spats!

http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=120391.0

I think it would be a great place to start for you and you could always modify it to look like the pattern/style you're going for.

Thank you very much. I'll check that link out. However, i found some spats that fit nicely (pictured in the post from Aug. 29). Are they adequate?

Yeah, I'm sure you wouldn't!
Anyway, I'm primering the bars now. The kyber crystals are done, just need some weathering washes.

Will still give the crystals a couple more washes, but the ranks are finished. I'd say I'm pleased with how they turned out.

Thanks, guys.

Girth belt arrived! Glad I got it when I did because the maker said she is moving on to other projects and actually used the last of her blue rope for my order. Thanks to Raestin and Kebiin for the recommendation. Kebiin and I will be belt buddies now! :D

Thanks you guize!

Update! My mom personal tailor sewed pant legs into the sleeves on my scrub top top resemble the sleeves on the Fett suits. She also made me a kama! (Disregard feet.)

The sleeves are very baggy, but I think once I have the gauntlets on, the excess can be tucked into them.

Here I tried twisting the sleeves and secured them with ponytail holders.

Also, the slot holster for my blaster is just held on with zip ties for now, but I have someone working on a fix for that.

That looks awesomely simple... I really need to learn basic sewing...

Addendum: Test piece of extra fabric for the kama. Practicing weathering technique. Will move on to the actual kama shortly.

Thanks you guys!

Paint/Grime added! I hit it with a little more after this pic was taken (hopefully so it will show in pics a little easier). Should I just leave it at that once it dries or do I wash it again?

Next up, sewing elastic loops into my sleeves for the hoses a la Raestin's suggested method. Never picked up a sewing needle before tonight, so I did a test run on a spare piece of fabric. Vods, we're in business... Tomorrow night. lol

Loops sewn into the shirt for gauntlet tubes. (There will be a little overlap here with my other WIPs.) A potato drawing of what I did for the tubing attachment. Would like to go back over the navy tape with black electrical tape.

Good job on the hose attachments!!  :D

I'd also suggest weathering the pouches too.  They're awesome pouches...but pretty clean.  And that Sidi girth belt takes a good bit of weathering to actually "look" weathered, so you may want to weather it, then take some pics and see if it actually shows up in the pics...then rinse and repeat if need be.

How does this look so far? I'll probably go over with a little more this evening. I have some leather shoe oil I can try on the pouches (i was going to use it to weather my Poe/Finn jacket eventually, but was too nervous to try it; this will be the perfect first go with the stuff).

An hour or so later, leather treating! Gonna still hit it with some black wash this evening.

Your dogs are cute!!

The weathering looks good! As long as the weathering is consistent between your soft stuff and your armor, you're good :) so if you do extra heavy weathering on the plates, do the same on the soft goods. If you do light weathering, on the armor, do light weathering on the soft stuff, etc..

Thanks! So how hard would it be to make a Mando bucket for a Pug??? :P

I'm trying my best to keep it consistent. My plates are decently dingy from the black wash, but not too much. So that's where I'm aiming with the soft parts.

Black washed pouches!

Attempted to black wash the boots, but I can't really tell a difference... Also they will get weathered as they are worn.

Attempted to hit my black gloves with some brown spray paint, but they soaked it up and you cannot tell there is any brown on them at all.
Pre-App pics tomorrow! HYPE!

Omg a pugmando would be adorable!

For your gloves, use maybe some charcoal or chalk or something similar to weather your gloves? Or dirt? lol can't wait to see some Pre app pictures :)

Regional Pre-App actually didn't say anything about my plate alignment, but all my suggestions were Soft Parts related. Luckily, my mother is a whiz with the sewing machine.

Vest zipper was exposed above and below the back plate, so here is a flap to cover it. It's completely separate from the vest and velcros into place. Just needs a little black spray paint.

*Disregard my pack of weenies* :P

Also, the pants were too loose/baggy. We were able to take them in, but then had to move the velcro for the knee pads. So that took a little longer than planned, but we got it all done in one day. Also thinking I need a little more spray paint on my thighs.

Also may have something else in the pipeline, but that will be an after app project.

When you kit back up for the next round of pictures, move your girth belt or your pouches a bit. This will help because it'll be more visible and fill some space on your torso :) good work on the soft part fixes!

Pouches were moved for the app round and the girth belt was visible. And now I'm an OM! :D
Thanks for all the pointers along the way, Kryamla!

Now for upgrades! lol More pouches that can double as a Shoretrooper trophy! These will probably sit on the back of my belt. Maybe they can hide the buckles.

Thanks! I look forward to meeting both of you at Celebration!

In other news, figured I make my old weight lifting gloves usable for when I can't fiddle with the full fingers. I will probably paint over the logo. Won't be too noticeable as that part tucks under the gaunts nicely.

Not sure what to do with the Shoretrooper pouch. It can be worn around my waist as another belt, but it just hangs there and doesn't hug to my body like I want it to. However, there is a loop that my pouch belt can slide through and it seems to hug to me a little better. The only problem would be I'd have to either cut the D rings or the leather immediately around the rings to get rid of the strap. I'm leaning toward cutting the D rings and if I want to go back, I can just get a couple of small carabiner clips.

Thank you! Also covered the logo on my fingerless gloves! One side is embossed (why the other isn't, I'll never know), but the weathering combined with covering via the gaunts shouldn't let it be noticeable. Gonna add a little more black wash on the rest of them to make it even.
