I am starting a legacy armor kit based on Ohl'd Vart's templates.
Collar and Chest
(http://i.imgur.com/Va1VEbi.jpg?1)
I am guessing I need to trim the width of these back, but I'd like some advice as to how much? Does the collar need trimming back too or just the chest?
Or should I switch to the Drake templates before I go too far down this road? For reference, my shoulders are about 23" wide.
Appreciate your help.
-
Congrats on starting your build, it is always an exciting undertaking. A few quick notes and tips
Size wise it is hard to tell you are holding the templates a bit to high on your body in this picture, so it makes it very hard to gauge size accurately. You need to bring the templates down a bit so they are in the right place before and solid call on any size change can be made.
And if you can wrangle someone else into taking pictures for you, helps to keep things from shifting around from having to hold your arms up and what not.
-
Thanks Naran,
What IS the proper placement? I thought I had read that the collar was supposed to be more or less choking me?
Thanks in advance!
-
Choking you is a bit extreme
With your collar plate you want it to sit on your collarbone, and you ideally want your chest diamond to sit right about your sertum.
Just bring it all down an inch or so and it should be in roughly the right spot.
-
Ok, diamond is over sternum. How am I looking now? Enlisted wife for tape help and photography.
A little trim, or switch to the already smaller Drake Templates?
Thanks!
-
Size wise, I think you could trim those templates down about an 1/8-1/4 of an inch and they would work for you.
Also you are going to need to bring the collar plate up a touch, you want it resting right in front of your collarbone. Which means you will more than likely need to modify the chest plates so you don't stab yourself with those corners, when you move your arms. It is always best to get the collar in line first and then work down from there. If it means your chest diamond is up a bit, that is no big deal. We are all shaped different after all :) and that means lots of tweaking to hone things in. Try being the templates up half way between where they are now and where they were in the first picture and you will be spot on! :D
Another option would be to switch to the Ronans Templates (which can be found here- http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=73517.0 ) they have a longer V shaped collar which allows you to keep the curve of the chest plates in the right spot without the need for modification and doesn't leave you will the big gap you have in your collar coverage right now.
Keep at it vod!
-
Thanks Naran!
So more like this?
My sternum is now an inch or so below the bottom of the bottom chest plate, but I guess I could always add a plate at the bottom. I am long torso'd....
I will also look into Ronan's templates, but I think I like this chest layout a little better than the Ronan shots I was able to find. Also, the bottom plate is supposed to end right above the navel right?
Thanks again!
-
That is spot on vod!
And yes you want your ab plates to end right about your navel and I agree I think those templates suit your frame nicely.
-
Okay. Looks like I am doing the chest and 3 plates below then. The 3rd ends right about my navel. The forth I could almost tuck the bottom of into my belt.
Thanks again for the fast replies. I think I will leave the template alone and cut the sintra as is, then trim down sintra if needed. Easier to remove than to add.
-
Always happy to help, and yeah almost no one EVER needs that fourth plate , so dropping it is 100% normal.
Look forward to seeing this kit come together!
-
Lol...yeah, the fourth plate was added for the really tall people; most folks only use the 3 (including me). ;)
And, Naran is correct...because of the multitude of body shapes and sizes, these templates will always have to be modified to fit your individual form. :)

Thanks for waying in my master! :p I hope to be cutting and shaping chest and backplates with a fellow newbie on Saturday. So I will post progress pics sometime late saturday or sunday-- hopefully.

Awesome, Quin...I'll be following your build with interest! ;)

Sizing looks good, only minor note is that you want to have the shoulder plates sit a bit higher up. But other than that looks good!
-
Thanks for the feedback Naran! Was having a mini-armor party today, and your feedback came in just in time for us to be able to cut and shape the back. Got a lot of plates cut and shaped today, will be posting progress picts pretty soon. Need to go re-read the assembly tutorials for legacy.

Chest --center strap done, 2 straps down sides to go
(http://i.imgur.com/wGKMKA6.jpg)
I realize they aren't sitting quite right on me, (like the collar is about 3 inches too low)but that's because of the tape job being done from inside the armor, and not wanting to bother my phtographer for longer to get it fixed. I'm going to do adjustable leather straps at shoulders and bottom plate to bottom plate when I do full assembly.
-
Other than the fact that things are sitting way to low :), looks pretty good to me.
-
All plates cut out. Gauntlet's not cut yet, following Ku's PVC vambraces tutorial when I get there.

That is a lovely pile of plates you have there sir. Look forward to seeing them all come together!
-
Thanks!
Initial shaping work:
Chicago screws should arrive tomorrow, and I can continue assembly work so that I'll be ready to refine the shape. It's too hard to place things consistently when plates are held together just with tape.
-
That's looking awesome, brother! ;D
Rob
-
Thanks again everyone!
New Progress pics- chest and back assembled. I can tell the backplates need a bit more shaping, and 2nd plate is cocked, going to have to wait till I can get together with a friend to fix those. How does the shape on the chest plates look? Diamond is still a WIP-- going to go with a diamond larger than the hole currently there, placed over the hole. Also, my vest fits better than it looks if I have someone to help dress me... I need more yoga in my life evidently.
The nylon webbing at the shoulders and sides is currently a stand in-- will be getting black leather and buckles for final assembly.

How's the shaping/placement on the front plates?

Looks solid, keep up the good work

Shnees flight suit and boots. Boot armor not pictured. Hope to have pics with all plates and softparts on by the end of the weekend.

Got a lot of work done with a fellow future Murraan Mando today. This isnt pre-app, but its Pre-Paint pics. So I need solid feedback on what needs additional trimming (and how much) and shaping before paint. Also going to bevel every edge of every plate when I disassemble for paint.
Full front: I can tell I have the plates shifted to one side a bit, but thats just a matter of adjusting the sidestraps more evenly. Girthbelt is only tacked, but is being sewn the rest of the way. together. Also already took another half inch off the the bits of the chest plates for my arms. Other than that, what needs adjusting on this view?
Left side: Have the shnkees marked to trim them so theres an even arc vertically.
Right side:
Back: After taking this pic, realized I had some things misalligned.
Revised/Reshaped backplates: Nylon webbing and duct-tape between chest and back plates is getting replaced with black leather straps and buckles.
Hand plates:
Alright, so theres the update. Need as much detailed feedback as possible so I can make revisions before paint.
-
The only thing I see is that your backplate is sitting a bit low and needs to come up a touch. In the outside pictures it is at the right level so I think in the close up picture things might have shifted. But it is something to just be aware of.
As for everything else, looks solid all around!

Awesome! Thanks, I'll knock the corners off the tips of the backplate so it can sit a little closer to the collar, make the mounts for the shoulders bolts instead of duct tape, and then start disassembling for paint.
-
I might suggest trimming the cod. Cods are hard enough to kneel in, yours looks a little wide like it might interfere or even fall/snap off
-
Got feedback in clan that the gap between the back of my neck and the backplate was too large. I traumaish plate to lay over part of the top plate and fill some of the gap. Does this look like enough coverage to you guys? (or do I need to slide it up another inch or two? And what do you think of the look?
-
I really like that! Although I'm a big fan of trauma plates, so I might be a bit biased. The trick with trauma plating though, is to keep it incorporated throughout your kit. A single section might look a bit off. I think that the plate definitely helps with the neck gap. The only thing or modification I might say is that cutting that divot/triangle out of the trauma plate is kinda accenting the gap now. Any chance you have a bucket, or could borrow one to see how it looks with a helmet on?
-
Yeah, lets see it with the bucket on...makes a big difference some times. I used the same templates as you and modified with trauma plates and a lot of trimming. One thing to keep in mind is how you'll put it on...will there be enough gap to fit your noggin through? Personally, even though mine is strapped for suspension, it is technically fixed with my spaulders in place (with Chicago screws)...in order to fit it over my huge melon I have to turn my head sideways. It's definitely been an experience getting the plates to lay right and articulate the way they should. My WIP's in my signature, if you need tips or suggestions I'd be happy to help :)
-
Pics with bucket as promised. My plan is to attach the bottom edge of that plate with chicago screws, and then about 2/3rds of the way up use hidden snaps on the side edges. If I do that, I can put my head through, and then have someone snap the sides down. If I end up getting to a place where I can't, I'll chicago screw 3 corners of the shoulders, and then use snaps for the final corner so I can open one side of it, slip in from the side and snap closed.

Some painted and reassembled kit. The helmet, most of the chest and the back are still with Keely Siri getting paint. Those plates are all blue in the middle with copper edges. Chicago screws are currently in primer but with get some hand painting to match the part of the kit they are attached to on Friday.
As always, feedback welcome.

Looking good Vod.
How much plastic did you need for the plates? In square yards or meters.
-
Based on looking at what i have left on my floor i have used about 70% of a 4 ft b 8 sheet. Or 2.5 square yards on the plates. That doesnt account for all the home depot plastic in the helmet tho.

I'm going to be remaking the torso plates (they're too wide for me now) , and I have a question for my legacy peeps: My current plates float on straps. Those of you who have tried the solid construction, how do you like it?
Also... de ja vu time:
Then and now paper templates -- left side Old Vart, right side Drake -- size feedback? My instinct is it's still half inch to an inch too wide on each side (also still working on losing weight).

Instead of trimming the chest piece back at the shoulders by the half inch, try rolling the edges inwards. That's what I did with mine and it gave it some definition
-
Your instinct is pretty spot on. I would bring the templates in by about a half inch. That should give you a better fit.

Definitely went through your WIP again last night :) What did you use to attach your trauma plates to the base plates?

Thanks Naran! Mobility is definitely a priority with this set, so I will be checking that carefully once I'm in plastic too.

I want to say loctite professional grade super glue and Bondo. Haven't had any issues yet with the falling apart and they get mo ved around alot.
I've never had any luck with E6000.
It could have been a 2part epoxy though.
-
Also never had luck with E6k, one of my friends swears by it though.... Have heard that PVC cement (like for PVC pipes) bonds sintra together well too... may have to do a test on some scrap.

Will figure out size of trauma plates after the shaping work is finalized on base plates. Rough shaping on chest done -- backplates are a team sport, so calling it a night. Following the advice to leave wide and sand down. Still some more curves to make in the chest, but at present, feels wide. :) Happy building everyone.
-
Many thanks to Keely for helping me out with getting my chest ab collar and back plates shaped:

Silver marks on side of top chest plate are where I am planning to make the first trim to. Will do that, put the straps on, and then plan out the trauma plating. I know the edges need cleaning up, and I have plans for that. I also know there are some final shaping tweaks to make, but part of that I need to trim the top of the collars to flush mount with eachother before I finalize.
Feedback welcome :)

Should be getting the plates into paint sometime next week.

Looking great...that backplate shaping is awesome; I wished mine looked that good (back when I had one---I got frustrated, and ditched it for a duster, lol).
Rob
-
Thanks! The backplate involved the use of an oven, me laying on the floor and a friend basically laying hands and both forearms on it to get all that curve. could not have done it on my own.

Ok, there is the original sep WIP. lol not sure if this was on the one in the clan or not. nice looking back and seeing how far you have come, seeing as we have 4 more members up and coming with this same design i figured brushing up on it to learn something for myself would be a good thing. my next questions
1. the shnees you just updated. how did you manage the curve you currently have? debating something similar for the brother.
2. suggestions on the shoulders and attachment, are you doing the TK style strapping and leaving it attached to the chest and sliding into it later?
-
This is the legacy subforum one lol.
1: 200 degree oven, with sintra on a sheet pan, 5-8 minutes, until VERY floppy. I put on my boots and a pair of jeans, Keely put on a pair of work gloves and I sat on the floor and she pressed the pplate on my leg. Same thing for back plate, but I wore a hoodie.
2. For my new shoulders, I am doing a single strap connecting to the strap that connects my front and back collar plates-- if that isn't enough, I'll add a strap that goes around my tricep. For the originals -- I attached the shoulders to the top chest and top back plate and put it on like football pads.
-
appreciate it. i will be sure to take those to task when the brother gets his stuff made.

Thanks. The hope is that these plates are an upgrade in quality over the old set in ever possible way. But still keeping the same basic layout and paint scheme.
-
Plates after blue topcoating, and blackwash -- still have some black drybrushing to do for some scorching and clearcoat before I can assemble. Also need to attach Murran Cog to the backplate, and Chest Diamond -- it's in primer right now lol

Assembly of the torso.. kitted up by myself, and some hasty pics. Some things that just need to be put on better, and some to do notes:
Probably need to add bicep straps to the shoulder plates
couple of the strap sections front and back need a little bit of shortening to keep the plates alligned. The back is not sitting where it should be due to speed and lack of flexibility on the part of the wearer.
Biggest problem with any of the alignment is I haven't run the straps from back to front yet on the bottom plates. Once I kit up with waist items I will need to see where/if that bottom back plate needs a trim like last time. Looking at it, I suspect i may not. If so, probably way less than last time, but that was always in the plan.
Paint the rivets, all the rivets, ALL THE RIVETS...
Weather the softparts more to match the weathering of the upgrades.
I know it's not all on me perfectly right now, and I know the job's not done, but after 2-3 weeks of having a pile of plastic on tables and in bins, I really wanted to see that turn into armor last night. Overall, I'm really happy with where it's at, and with the improvement in quality over the plates these are replacing. Will definitely post side by side app style photos when it's all finished. :)
Oh right... pics:

we will get you squared away. depending on when your package arrives.
-
Roger that! And thanks! Will get as much doen on my own as I can in the meantime. Still some more things to learn before these upgrades are done and I start planning the next upgrades lol.
-
Looking good. My only "criticism" is that your rivets are showing. I do believe, though I could be wrong, that they must be painted to match the armor with exception to battle damage.
**** edit ****
Being the dum dum I am, I over looked where you talked about rivets. I really need to be wearing my glasses
-
No worries... I wrote a bit of a novel on the front end of that post. I think these plates are a good case for why rivets SHOULD be painted... they stick out pretty badly at present. And I don't think just dulling them with sand paper would do much to fix it. I have a pen sander arriving tomorrow, and then I can sand them to prep for paint without hating life.
-
Kit is coming along great. Love the weathering
-
So, the paint in the renderings below isn't completely accurate -- Brass is standing in for Copper, and the copper will end at the top of the brow ridge and follow the brow ride all the way around the helmet-- but here are the renderings of the helmet that will be part of these upgrades -- modeled by me, soon to be printed, finished, and painted by me :) This is my first really complex modelling project. Many thanks to Sean Fields, Buddy Livingston, Matt Robinson, Keely Graesser, Bowfanny and Naran for feedback along the way!

Ahh Sean field$... I love his work.. I had actually thought of using his shoretrooperfiles for my heavy build.
-
One of his shore trooper shoulders is part of this build :) I know him IRL, he's a genuinely good human being in addition to being an amazing designer and maker. He'll have a Fen Rau in the MMCC sometime soon.
-
Got the helmet printed and assembled with a combination of superglue and e6k. Due to some printer issues and failed prints, the two back sections of the dome are assembled from multiple prints, after caliper measurements of the part that printed to print what was left. This resulted in some misalignment that I worked on preassembly, and will have to finish sorting out in the bondo/sanding phase.
I am pleased with the fit. It works with my glasses. Keep in mind it will get raised about a half-inch to an inch off my head when I add some foam.
Keyslots and earcaps will get added later on.
Because of how many pieces the helmet is made of in order to fit it on my bed, I decided I should fiberglass the inside. But.. I hate fiberglass-- itching-- etc.
So, on the advice of Bowfanny, I decided to use Bondo Fiberglass Resin, but use Blue Shop Towels as a stand in for tfor the fiberglass mat.
I added a second coat of just resin about 30 minutes after I finished the initial layup, and it seems to have worked really well. There's almost 0 flex in the helmet, and my test piece of papertowel is definitely reinforced :)
Will get a 2-3 coats of black plasti-dip inside later tonight.
-
So, the biggest update in my life is that I have a son now, hence delayed update -- he'll be a month old in 2 days.
But... now I also have an un-shiny new helmet.
Jut a bit of tidying up on the rest of the kit, and a bit of UN-tidying up on the rest of the kit to go. Will be posting pics of the full thing after Fan Expo DFW :)
-
Awwww little mando playing with daddy's blaster collection...
Haha congrats btw
I like the chrome visor. Are you planning on a lighting kit for it?
-
My vision for this guy is demolitions. Any lighting I add to it is gonna be in the form of a headlamp. The mirrored visor is a call out to Molly Millions (aka Molly Mirrorshades) from William Gibson's Burning Chrome, and the Sprawl Trilogy. She had mirror lenses covering her entire eye area.
I might be a nerd...
-
Congrats on the new baby!
And the armor looks great; paint and weathering really pull it all together. Not sure I like the bucket design itself, but you it came out awesome :D
-
Thanks Slade! Fortunately we're a custom club. The design is made of choices, not compromises, and it fits the aesthetic I want. I want it to look and feel like it can deal with explosions, cause it's likely going to be Demolitions at some point this year or early next. Thus no RF, and the somewhat blockier design. It also fits on my head with glasses, and is narrower than my first helmet. (Just explaining some of the choices) It's also got some callbacks to my old helmet, and some call forwards to my new trauma plates.
Thanks for the compliments on the paint.
-
I just want to say this is awesome and the shoptowel in resin sounds like something to keep in mind as I hate fiberglass. Whenever I get to building a bucket...
-
Thanks! Shop towel was something Bowfanny recommended :)

The important part is it fits the look you want, does what you need it to do and has enough space for your noggin! It definitely has the feel of a bomb suit, looks like it can take a thermal detonator to the face :D
-
Absolutely, that was the hope :)

First two days of trooping the upgrades this past weekend. Already made one change from the pics that will follow. The word "almost" is the key word in the usual guide line of "your collar should be almost choking you." :P After Friday, I had a bruise at the base of my Adam's Apple. Sunday, I moved both collar plates down one notch on the strap, and there was no more collar neck bruising interaction. :)

Fix before next troop *hopefully* List:
-Re-engineer girth belt closure
-Figure out a way to stop all waist items from sagging throughout the day
-figure out a way to attach cod to girth instead of a separate belt
-Replace or permanently fix internal strapping issues
-reprint gauntlets with a fillet on the wrist end, got some bites/chafing/bruising
-brown weathering where kama overlaps boots because mud
-More padding for helmet?
-Lose back the weight I lost before I started these upgrades, and then gained when the newborn arrived ~about 15 pounds to there, then some more weight on top of that to get where I really want to be... with a goal of being able to reach the floor in kit.
-Add a side-arm
Long Term:
-Replace all visible straps other than shnee straps with leather
-Replace Canvas pouch
-
Looks great Vod!
A tip I got on the sagging is Velcro. Either on flight suit or vest and then add to girth belt so it holds up in place.

A tip I got on the sagging is Velcro. Either on flight suit or vest and then add to girth belt so it holds up in place.
Will keep it in mind as a last resort. Currently the only Velcro on my kit is where the vest closes to itself. I'm trying to keep the kit as velcro free as possible. I don't have a lot of logical reasons for why... but my bolts and straps never pop loose when I walk or bend down or squat. the velcro that IS on my kit sometimes fails me in those scenarios.

I'm the same way, but my preference is simply because then I have to wait for someone who can sew to help the velcro

That just means you need better or more velcro (or both :P). To each his own; I like my velcro because it allows for small adjustments with relative ease and in all my years of trooping I've never had it fail me.
Regardless of attachment method, this armor looks fantastic!
I do have some suggestions, but they're additions rather than changes to the existing parts. Some kind of faux buckle, like Han's, or the one depicted in the Legacy comics at the front of the belt would fill the middle very well; it looks a little blank now. Possibly boot armor and bicep armor to complete the 'heavy' look of Legacy armor, and for when you go demolitions, armor on the back of the gloves.
With or without those additions, this will still continue to be a dope set of armor :).
-
Thanks for the thumbs up Slade :)
planning to ditch all the parachute buckles when I switch to leather. I like the idea of the feaux buckle, but I'd want it to slide so I wasn't stuck with how the belt was turned on me :)
Thighs and boot armor are required for Demo, which honestly thighs are my one big hangup with going demo... my quads are as mutant as my head is... idk if I'll ever by comfortable with hard plates there. Maybe if I can come up with a flexi-layered design....

This
This is pa r t of my holdup on getting OM
I hate how the thighs never seem to sit right on me god knows how many variations of thighs ive done. That's why I'm waiting to see how the RC thighs fit on me.
-
Will be watching your... thighs... :p with interest.
-
For the buckle, I made a fake one for my legacy build that just velcro'd on the front of my ammo belt. You could make one with clips (like a money clip) that slide over the belt so you can move it around as you please.
Hrm, thigh armor. Perhaps a layered look like your back plate and Legacy style shins? You could make soft pads that the armor plates attach to, that you can either magnet/bolt to your thighs, or have straps from the belt and thigh straps. Or, and I'm just spit-balling here, perhaps some layered armor lames around the thighs of the kama, like faulds on old plate armor or kusazuri on samurai armor.
-
I like the idea of the faulds... wonder if they would qualify or thigh coverage for brigades....
-
I thought of faulds....but was afraid they would look too close to samurai armor to be approved.
-
I think they should be okay if I echo the shapes in the rest of my kit as apposed to just doing rectangles, but will do a sketch and get feedback before I build
-
Good call on the sketch, there's often a fine line to tread with drawing real world inspiration, especially as there are some clear samurai influences already (shape of Vader's helmet, anyone? :P) but with proper design I'm confident it'll do the trick. I can see the requirement for thigh armor, as you want it to look like you can take a close range explosion, but faulds shaped to match the flow of the armor should be adequate. Of course, that's all up to whomever does Brigade approvals these days.
-
Yeah, I just posted this in Brigade chatter to see i it would take care of the thigh requirement.
Would be over the kama, also added a faulds reference pic to the post
(https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71mrmam9JIL._UX385_.jpg)
-
Nope armor kamas/tassets don't count as thigh armor, at least not by the general standards of the club.
-
Roger that Naran. Thanks for weighing in :) If under the kama my thigh coverage won't be visible in most photos, but I definitely understand where you're coming from, and I was worried it might be classified as an armored kama instead of thigh plates even though it'd be serving the same purpose.
-
I saw in the Brigade thread you posted faulds got shot down, which is fair but unfortunate. Are you up for altering your kama? If you've gotta have thigh plates anyway, might as well show 'em off. I'm thinking keeping the top of the kama the same, but tapering it so that the front lays at an angle, with the bottom more or less at the outside of your knees so the edges cut outward angles from top to bottom. If that doesn't make sense (I've been up since 3 am because of work and starting to get loopy :P) I can mock up a sketch on your pic with my dope MS Paint skills :D.
-
It makes sense.. I'll have to think about it... and think about whether I'd rather have the faulds than the brigade lol. I also need to go looking for non-bog-standard thigh plates that others have done.
-
Heheh, well if you decide against the Brigade, I still think the faulds would be dope and complete that 'can-take-a-bomb-to-the-face-and-laugh' vibe that your helmet and armor have already set up.
-
Yeah, if I don't brigade, the faulds are happening. They may happen even if I do brigade, and I'll just have double thigh coverage.
-
Awesome! I'll be keeping an eye out for them :D
-
Have decided not to brigade this kit, as it's turned into kind of a living laboratory of a kit... May eventually purpose build a kit for a brigade at some point, but for now... ON WITH THE UPGRADES!!!!!
I resolved some issues with the internal strapping that were revealed in the first troop at Fan Expo. Also replaced the front to back straps on the side with leather to get rid of the nylon. I need to beat them up and then hit them with some brown and black acrylic. but I'm happier with the strapping setup and confident my alignment will be solid when I troop:

Modeled this hammer head based on the Power Maul from Star Wars Galaxies:
Printed it at 1 hander - belt hanger scale and pole-arm scale. Thanks to some help from Keely with sanding and glazing putty, I hope to have them assembled and ready to get a little help with greeblification (TM) from Dan on June 9th.
Modeled and am currently printing my new gauntlets (inspired by the platforms on Enfys Nest's gaunts) Going to get some help from Buddy with cutting and etching a piece of acrllic to go on top of the tray on the shield gen side, and make that gauntlet my first LED project:
After consultation with our very capable Ruus'alor's, I will probably be adding a few non-printed greeblies to those under the overhangs on the platforms as well.
I also need to make a cross draw holster for my westar. Going to try to get all this stuff finished before I start on the faulds lol
-
As always I am skeptical, but you manage to have a quality of work that suprises me. keep it up.
-
Nice work so far! The gauntlets ought to be interesting to build. The underhang of the new box looks like it might be well suited for mounting a couple of rockets or something, if that doesn't make it too bulky.
-
Hello, my name is Sep, and I have a helmet addiction.... But I have a
REASON! (after the fact justification). I've decided to declare a major. I'm going droid hunter, and I need extra helmet sensors to be BRL compliant, so I need an RF, and there's not a great way to mount one on the current bucket because the earcaps are so thin. So... without further adieu -- the SepOwl Bucket: (I think I'm done modelling it... printing soon)
Currently rethinking the gauntlets, since I have to reprint them anyway. They're a hair small, and my priorities for the kit have shifted a bit. Good news is, the hammer fits with the BRL I am pursuing :)
-
im looking at the helmet and im thinking that this may be of use https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1956460

Interesting model design, should work out pretty well. Hopefully we'll see it printed soon!

im looking at the helmet and im thinking that this may be of use https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1956460
I looked at that one for reference when I was making mine. I don't really like the idea of mounting it at eye level and cutting into my peripheral vision even more. If it ends up looking super goofy, I'll move it down, but as modeled, I like it where it is right now.
Interesting model design, should work out pretty well. Hopefully we'll see it printed soon!
I'm on the second print of the first piece of it -- scaled up to 110% for the second printing. I have a small format printer, so it has to be done in 5-6 pieces. If I have to scale up further, it will be more pieces. But yeah, I hope to have at least a prototype done by the end of the weekend so I can see what other adjustments I need to make.

Iterative rapid prototyping.
So, I've been printing bits of this helmet pretty much since the last post. What follows is the process of getting it right:
Front middle section of dome and brow ridge -- original scale:
This one was too snug, and I had concerns about my ears chafing
110% of original scale, front middle section of dome and brow ridge:
Room for my ears, reasonable visor location (based on how I imagine the top dome slice fitting)
Printed the back section (Also 110%) to check for glasses clearance:
Yup, looks good to go for glasses!
The rest of the pics that follow are with the above 2 pieces -- 110% with the top dome slice also 110% -- I don't have a pic of just the dome and brow, but later pics will confirm the visor consistently sits so I can see
Let the CHEEK BATTLE... BEGIN!!!
So in retrospect, this first cheek print was kind of foolish. I scaled the cheeks up to 110% (naturally) to fit the dome. This wound up taking a cheek that I alread knew was bordering on too long and adding a little over an inch to it. Result:
Holy crap-- way too long! (I mean, like, if I want to look down, like EVER) -- not a shocking result, in retrospect.
Up till now, I'd been doing my scaling in my slicer -- time to go back to fusion. There, I scaled everything up to 110% (uniform scaling) my percentages hereafter, are based on that 110% I made myself a couple of size options with the plan of just printing cheeks until I figured out which size was going to work -- but here's the trick. The front to back and side to side measurements for the other pieces were already correct. If I'd used uniform scaling, I would have gotten pieces that were the right height, but too small along x and y to fit the dome. So I turned off uniform scaling and only made the scaling adjustments to the Z axis -- this is why it pays to model your design in relation to the planes in Fusion 360.
85% (of 110%) - Cheek: -- note -- the back ring doesn't get reprinted until I settle on the actual cheek size. (110% cheek included for comparison)
Better, but still concerned about hitting my shoulders, and one of the things I don't like about my current bucket is that I didn't spend enough time getting THIS part of the fit right, so --
70% (of 110%) - Cheek (85% included for comparison)
Looks like we have a winner, needed to print 70% back ring to confirm
70% Cheek, 70% Back ring with Keyslots:
Winner! -- Printed the other cheek, but I don't have taped pics of that.
The other thing I had to fix fromt he original is that I modeled in some alignment tabs -- my design didn't work out, and the tabs actually make the inside of the helmet uncomfortable. So I shaved them off the model, and the front part of the dome and brow, sans tabs is currently printing. After that, I'll reprint the back half and then I can do full mockup.
And now, a comparison of how the design started, and where it ended up:
Orginal Scale
(https://i.imgur.com/cwyZ35C.png?1)
110% dome parts, 70% (of 110%) rest of the bucket
(https://i.imgur.com/eoMsWhd.png?1)
-
It's coming around nicely.
-
Certainly looking good! Seems a little short, but that's probably fine with a good neck seal and balaclava.
-
It's short because my neck is short and my shoulders (not talking about armor) are tall. In my current helmet when I turn my head I hit collar armor. Balaclava will cover the gap
-
That was one of the worst parts about printing my buckets. Sizing was always funky. It was either too tall too short or not long enough front to back. Looks good though
-
Yeah, I'm actually fortunate here that I don't have a printer big enough to print the whole thing in one piece-- because then I'd have probably printed 4 or 5 full helmets, istead of 3 or 4 extra cheeks and an extra front brow ridge. Of course, if I DO get a large format printer at some point, hopefully I'll remember this lesson.
Also helps if you're working with your own model, cause you're not stuck trying to just modify an STL, you can modify the source files.
-
NECRO TIME!
So... just realized I haven't shown off the new bucket -- first thing's first:
A little history of the face of Sep: From left to Right -- the Mark III (first finished helmet, home depot buckets, hotglue, bondo and hope), The Mark IV (my 3d model, my 3d print), The Mark V aka Sep Owl: (my 3d model, really should have skipped Mark IV printing, my print) -- I've sinced swapped to a black visor.
Now that that's out of the way, here's the kit as it was up until Monday:
The blue shoulder in this pic has cracked and been glued, but it's really just a bit too small for it, so I re-modeled it to fit my shoulder better and added a bicep strap.
The white shoulder was flopping around too much, so I added a bicep strap to it as well.
(still need to weather the leather, and paint the chicago screws to be ready for Saturday) -- but I also finished building a stand for the wood lathe today -- should be able to knock those two things out tomorrow and have it troop worthy for Saturday :)

Next steps: design trauma plates, cut trauma plates, shape trauima plates, e6k trauma plates to base plates, then all the painting. I'm gonna give all the paint a bit of a refresh, but not doing a full repaint. Just updating to match helmet and shoulder a bit better since my technique has advanced.
-
I like these new plate shapes better. Make you look more well covered by your plates.
-
I dig it! I really like the steam punky color scheme and look of your kit! It's also cool to see the full kit, not sure I ever found your WIP before today.
-
Thanks for the feedback :) I hope to have pics of me in full kit with the new plates soon!
-
Looking awesome . Can't wait to see it all together.
-
New helmet looks dope :D. Benefits of hiatuses; coming back to folk having made progress! I think the new ab and collar plates will be good additions, they look much better in proportion than the old.
-
Thanks man, good to have you back on the forums!

(I got the belts uneven on the front to back straps which is causing some mis-alignment)
Overall, I'm happy with the new look, my current notes follow the pics.

Notes from Monday's Troop:
Shift white leather straps from top of bottom back plate to bottom of bottom backplate
Remove 1 strand of the girthbelt, re-engineer closure system -- weather the bit of unweathered girth that ends up getting exposed on the doubleback.
Sew up the sides of the vest, and the unsewn shoulder, add a central zipper to the back.
Consider velcroing (gag) the girthbelt to the vest
get rid of the tacti-cool pouch, or add sintra to it (the replacement "leather" one wound up failing catastrophically and I nearly lost my phone and wallet at a troop)
Weather the leather shoulder straps
thrice bodged gauntlets continue to deteriorate -- replacements in progress
If you see anything I missed, PLEASE comment :)
-
Dude, it looks dope, very much so. Only things I can suggest are in the way of additions, as everything else about it (once you upgrade that pouch :P) looks fantastic. Firstly, I think it would look better with more pouches, or doodads on the belt. From a perspective of CRL, looks absolutely fine, but that said even with belt and girth your waist looks kinda sparse. Even just one or two small ones, like Han's, would fill the space nicely.
Other than that, it's just my endless desire to see all legacy kits in heavy armor :P. Those thigh faulds we talked about before, maybe some bicep-elbow armor, either wider back plates or like accent wing-plates added to the sides of the existing plates. That said, I don't remember if you're looking at brigades still, so more armor might be precluded by any BRLs you're taking into account.

Incoming picture dump. If you have questions feel free to ask :)
I'm gonna be taking some fully kitted up pics on Saturday. Just have a couple of things left to do between now and then.

Does my paint meet the requirements for that one?
Colors- Primary armor color should be bold and/or intimidating to frighten opponents. Patterns painted or added to the armor should be designed to enhance intimidation.
-
I personally always took the paint requirements as pretty flexible. I would reach out to the Brigade Team if you are curious as they will be the ones that make the call :)

Looks amazing! Really solid from head to toe :D

Your kit looks amazing! I have to agree with Naran, it would fit in great as a privateer.

Okay okay, after looking at the BRL, I realized I've build about 80-90% of a Privateer already, and it fits in line with what I have in mind for the kit, so I've posted the paint question in the Special Ops sub.
Edit:
AAAAAND going Privateer! Thanks for the advice guys :)

And decided to double major as a mechanic, WIPS for both professions are in the appropriate sub forums. I'll do a pic dump here too at some point :)

I love the customization on the tools :) they look like they'll fit perfectly with the rest of your kit! I will admit to no small amount of inspiration in my own rebuild, especially now that I've had to scrap my chest plates and gone back to legacy.
-
That's high praise man. I'm glad I could inspire you :) I've been following your wip!

Allrighty, coming in on the home stretch. Doing some leatherworking this week. And we have a 3 day convention this weekend. If all the new gear troops well Friday and Saturday, I'll be taking brigade photos Sunday morning.
With everything that's getting added to the belts, I new I needed some suspenders like I mentioned above. They arrived, but they weren't fully ready to attach to my belts out of the box, so here's my test of them last night. 95% of them will be hidden under my plates, but I'm still going to weather them consistently with the rest of my kit.
Here's the back of the belt with the extra magazines for Privateer -- I still need to weather them, also really considering painting them brighter colors first to add some more color for Privateer. Also need to hang my rank ropes off the belt somewhere.
And the front of the belt with all the tools (for mechanic) and Fusion Cutter for both mechanic and Privateer-- other than hard mounting these to the belt, this stuff is how I want it to be.

Goals for tonight:
Weather a bunch of leather, paint the mags, weather the work light, final mount the tools.
Also gonna go back and review both BRL's one more time to make sure I haven't left anything out of my build.
-
Gorgeous work, as always :). I wouldn't go full bright color on the mags, even weathered, but maybe a bright stripe or sigil on each? I really like the idea of the magnet-mounted spot lamp! I might have to steal/adapt the idea; I've been debating how to add a work light to my new kit (my original mechanic Slade had a head-lamp mounted on the side of the bucket that folded out when I needed it.

That ammo belt is awesome! Is it possibile to have more pictures of it?
