Title: Velke's Upgrade/2.0 WIP PRE-APP PICS ADDED 5-18-19
Post by: Velke on Apr 28, 2017, 11:27 AM
After being OM for a while and trooping a few times, I've found that I'm in desperate need of some upgrades. Also, I want to go for Spec-Ops Brigade as a Sniper, so these upgrades will be geared toward that as well.  It'll be a slow process, because I do have my current OM kit to troop in, so I'll just update this WIP thread as I go.

First off, I have some new weapons.
Blaster:

Dagger:

And a new set of macro-binoculars that will be more in line with my updated paint scheme:

I have also purchased a new flak vest. It's from Kra'am. It has the neck seal attached as opposed to being separate like my current one, and is about 4 inches longer than my current one, meaning the bottom edge actually sits where it's supposed to:

Future plans include the new paint scheme, the addition of secondary sleeves on my flightsuit, new "Boba" style boot spats, metal armor plates, cold cast aluminum gauntlets and helmet, back plate, and a new gunbelt.

All of your accessories look amazing. Where did you find them / How did you make them?

The blaster was purchased from Kruser here on the forums, and the dagger was purchased from Helix, also here. I made the macro-binoculars out of a handheld game called Tank Command that I found on Amazon.

Thanks! I'll have to check out Tank Command for myself for the binoculars. Good luck on your eventual sniper brigade application. I'm eager to follow this thread and see where your upgrades go.

I managed to knock out a sheath for my dagger. Not too bad, considering I'm absolutely NOT a leather worker.

Thanks. Yeah, I basically feel that way about my entire kit (hence the upgrades).

Thanks vod!

I finished a new holster for my sidearm today.

It's quite simple. As I stated before, I'm not a leather worker. But I like it!

I'm also almost finished with my new gauntlets.

I still need to install the rocket and a couple of other pieces, then weather them, and they're done.

I now have more progress to report. My new armor plates are painted.

I still need a rocket in the rocket cradle, and they all need to be weathered and sealed. My new helmet's on the way, so hopefully I'll have it painted and posted here soon.

It was pointed out to me that my visor was a tad high, which made it look as if it stopped a bit too short of the edge of the opening. I went in and adjusted that.

I've also started reattaching armor to my vest, using the Chicago screw method. Just shoulders and collar for now, but I plan to have all the rest of the plates on tomorrow.

Hello all. This post is just to let everyone know that I'm still alive and kicking. I was working an incredibly good job, but ended up getting laid off last August. Since then, money has been a huge issue. Fast forward to last month. I got put back to work, and after playing catch up on bills, I'm back to getting my Brigade work/upgrades finished!

I'm really sorry to hear about your work woes.  That's never a good place to be, but I'm glad you seem to have weathered the storm, and are getting back to it.

I like what you're doing - your upgrades look really nice, very well constructed, beautifully painted.  Great job.  And you may not be a leatherworker, but you're faking it incredibly well.   :P

Thanks vod, I appreciate the kind words. And speaking of leatherworking, I banged out a new pouch for my Aker box this evening.

Simple, yet effective. Also, I've been toying with the idea of making a slicer's terminal interface kit, which in my mind would be a sort of programmable keycard for locked doors. Anyway, I found a copy of The Bounty Hunter's Code for sale, and used the keycard from that as a base.

So far all I've done is paint it, but it'll eventually have some sort of wiring port attached, allowing me to connect a removable wire to it, the other end of which will attach to my left gauntlet. There will be a 3-4 push button interface on the gauntlet, which will be how/where the card is programmed. So....yay, progress!

As per the Sniper BRLs:

"Secondary Accessories - - choose at least two of the following:
Mid sized knife, beskad, or machete"

So I drew upon the Praetorian Guard weapons from TLJ as inspiration, and came up with this design for a machete.

The side panels are the same shade of green that I used on my kit. I think it turned out pretty well. More updates are coming soon!

Well, it's time to show a bit more progress! I have the very rough beginnings of my comms back pack.

This is the view from someone behind me if I had it on. Currently, it's little more than an aluminum box, but it's a start.

This is the top view. It's a bit hard to see, but there's a plate with rounded ends welded on there, on the right side. That's a reinforcement plate for other things to be added later.

This is the right side. The machete I posted earlier will be in a sheath that'll hang on this side.

Here's the left side. I designed what I think is a pretty cool ventilation plate here. Eventually, I'll put mosquito screening inside behind this. Also, there's a toggle switch and a blue LED in there. They'll have to come out before I paint this thing, but I just wanted an idea of what they'd look like.

And lastly, a shot of me holding this thing up to my chest. I know, I know, it goes on my back!  But I just wanted people to get an idea of the size of the pack.

Anyway, this is where mu time is going right now. I hope to have more updates/finished product soon!

And a view of the back showing the access panel for batteries.

I'm gonna try to wire everything up and have it ready to paint this weekend. I think it's gonna be awesome when it's done!

Post by: Velke on Jun 03, 2018, 01:33 AM
Thanks vod! I'm finally at  the point where everything's in the pack except the batteries. Eventually, each switch will turn on its own green LED, and the switch on the left side will turn on the blue LED next to it.

The green LED bar is actually a name badge that is rechargeable. Here's a pic with the lights dimmed, showing that LED bar a bit better.

But now it all comes back out so I can paint and weather it. I also still need to attach buckles to hang it from the harness I'm making.

Greetings all. I feel like I've been working almost nonstop for the past few weeks, but in the midst of all that I've finally managed to 100% complete my comms pack. Please disregard the view of the kitchen sink in the background.

The LEDs on the front panel look white in the photo, but they're actually green. Each switch is meant to access a different common radio frequency (Rebel, Imperial, Mandalorian, & Hutt).

This second shot shows the power indicator light. It was originally going o be blue, but I tried out this amber light and liked it better.

Lastly, this is a shot of the bedroll that I attached to the bottom. I'm extremely pleased with my final result on this thing!
Title: Re: Velke's Upgrade/2.0 WIP UPDATED 10-7-18
Post by: Velke on Dec 03, 2018, 02:16 AM
Hello all, I'm still here and still working on my upgrades. I had a nice hefty piece of aluminum that I did some grinding on, and came up with a decent belt buckle. I then drilled holes in it, and used Chicago screws to attach it to a belt.

I drilled the outer sides of the holes big enough to create a counter sink effect, causing the Chicago screws to drop down below the top surface of the buckle.

I then put in the backs of the screws. You'll notice that I set a snap in the belt, right at center of the back of the buckle. This will eventually snap into my (in progress) girth belt, to keep the gun belt from moving around when I walk/move.

Anyway, I'll be filling the countersinks in with weld, then I'll grind them, sand them, then I'll have a belt that "appears" to buckle in the front, but that will actually snap closed in the back.

Title: Re: Velke's Upgrade/2.0 WIP UPDATED 12-5-18
Post by: Velke on Dec 31, 2018, 12:12 AM
I spent the last few days fine tuning the shape of my armor plates, as well as weathering and sealing them.

Also, I recently posted pics of my completed comms backpack. However, the more I looked at it, the less I cared for the "boxy" look of it, so I went back to the drawing board and redesigned it....

painted it....

and added Mando'a lettering and weathering.

Currently, all of the lights I'm adding are installed and wired. I have just a few other things to install tomorrow, then I'll add pics of the completed pack. Things are starting to move along much quicker now!

The revised comms pack is complete.

I had some leftover Warnammer 40K decals that I thought would look cool on my kit, so I used a few around the dial.

I can't state enough how much happier I am with this pack than I was with my first one. More to come soon!

Thanks Kol!

Torolf, it shouldnít be too much longer until Iíll be posting pre-app pics!

I got my flightsuit in and decided to do a test fitting.

I think it's a bit baggy in the thighs, and I still need to weather it, but it's coming along.

By the way, youíll notice Iím now looking step as ďRETIREDĒ. Pay no heed. If all goes according to plan, it wonít last long....

In the meantime, I started (with Ihala's help!) working on a new girth belt. My idea was to have the belt, kama, and cod plate all be integrated into one piece that I could throw on and go. This was accomplished by sewing the kama directly to the girth belt, sewing in backing material to the inside of the belt, and sewing in Velcro on the ends of the belt for closure. After this was done, I drilled 4 holes into the back of the cod, cut a slit in the backing material, lined the cod up where I wanted it on the belt, marked spots for eyelets in the belt liner, and set the eyelets.

This gave me eyelets in the back of the belt that couldn't be seen from the front.

Once this was done, I put the barrel ends of Chicago screws through each eyelet using the slit I cut earlier for access. I then set the cod in place, feeding each barrel through the corresponding hole in the cod plate. Then I put the Chicago screws into the barrels.

When I finished, this was the initial result.

I, along with a few others, felt it was a bit wide. So, I had the belt narrowed to 6 1/2". Luckily, the cod plate mounted at the bottom of the belt, which meant the 1 1/2" could be removed from the top without redoing the armor placement (although the Velcro did have to be moved).

This was the modified result.

Since making it narrower, I'm very happy with it! Thank you again Ihala!

In other news, my armor is very near being ready to mount. I have just a couple of kinks to work out. My few flight suit mods are also almost done. Gauntlets and gloves are on the way, as is my helmet. I plan on knocking out my gun belt tomorrow (if so, pics are coming!) I'm getting close to coming out of retirement!

The girthbelt definitely looks better after you took it in.
Which blaster did you end up deciding on?

Clever idea with the cod plate, I was considering how I would do my own, so this was great inspiration!!

For regaining OM status, I'll stick with the one I posted on the first page of this thread. As for the one I'll be using for Sniper Brigades....I'm still undecided!

Thanks vod, it makes me very happy to hear that some of my work has inspired you!

Today, I finished up putting my gun belt all together. First, a bit of damage and weathering on the buckle.

Then, I attached 4 small leather pouches, 1 larger canvas pouch, and an all new dagger sheath and holster (I just didn't really care for those I'd made before).

Then, at long last, I FINALLY got to put all of this on over my flight suit!

Mhm, that is a mighty fine looking array there for your waist. I like the integration of the girth-cod-kama, oughtta be a good time saver when you kit up.

Alright, so I've been trying to put a few finishing touches on everything before I'm ready for pre-app pics. One thing I definitely decided is that I do not want a gauntlet rocket. The CRLs say that if I have a rocket cradle, I have to have a rocket. So, I got new gauntlets that don't have the cradle.

They're April Storm's Legacy gauntlets, and I love them! I'm personalizing them a bit to be more in line with what I think a Sniper's gauntlets would be like (for future Brigade application). More pics as I progress on them. I also cut the fingers out of my black gloves and added a pair of weathered white baseball batter's gloves. I like the look, and I can use my phone in them.

Lastly, a bit of bad news. While I was working on my helmet, I knocked it off of my work bench and it basically shattered (it landed in 5 pieces). I don't know if it got too cold (it's been cool but not THAT cold), or if something was wrong with the materials used to make it, but....I have a new one on the way already. That, fninshing the gauntlets, and ironing out a few little things with my armor are all I have left!

Oh yeah vod, I'm definitely still moving forward!

Indeed, unfortunate news but good to hear you're not letting it slow you down!

No way! I'm so close to being ready for pre-app pics, there's no stopping me now!

On the subject of my helmet, I got my new one! It's the Clone Wars Season 4 helmet from Lome Wolf, and it'sa real beauty!

I got the visor cut out and tested the field of vision in it (I know this visor is short, it's just one I already had. I now have one that is the correct length). I also added some greeblies to the cheeks.

I'm in the process of making helmet mounted macro-binoculars as well. I have the arms for these done, but I still need to cut and assemble the main body.

And in other news, I painted my gauntlets today....

....and got most of the greeblies on. The 3 square cut-outs on the left one will have lights in them.

I'm waiting for one more piece to come in the mail, then I can install the lights, weather and seal these, and call them done!

Lonewolf does excellent work, I expect you'll be quite happy with that bucket in the long run! The paint on that gauntlet looks amazing :D. Is that a Kamino saberdart I spy? I may be mistaken, but I think the other side is the front, from what I recall of images of it

I wasnít sure which end was which. Besides, itís super glued in there and Iíd risk damaging it by trying to change it now!  :P

Anyway, they're all done!

If all goes well, I'll have everything but the mounted macrobinoculars done by this weekend, then I'll get those built at work next week. Then just a few minor armor tweaks and I'll be ready to do some pre-app pics!

Thank you vod! I added some kill stripes to the helmet....

I had a couple of leftover Warhammer 40K decals that I thought looked cool, so I applied those to the ears.

I also ordered decals of my O.M. number, 1630, in Mando'a, and applied them to the back.

I thnk one of them may be slightly crooked, so I may try to pull that one up and re-apply it. I'm also still working on a set of mounted macro binoculars, but otherwise it's ready to go!

You do more weathering on the helmet as well as the decals? Or just different lighting? Either way, it really looks awesome!

Thank you vod! The first set of pics just has the paint chipped. The last 5 has a moderate amount of charcoal powder added, after which I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to take off the powder in areas that I wanted to be a bit less dirty.

Thanks!

Over this past weekend, I finally managed to get my plates (minus the back plate) to the point that they're wearable!

I also have my collar studs and shoulder cape attached.

I know the plates will need some adjustments (especially the chest diamond), but I feel like I'm really close!
