Title: Zando's WIP 1.0
Post by: Zando on Aug 11, 2017, 03:43 PM
Alrighty vode! Hopefully gonna get moving on my kit. I'll hopefully have some sizing help pics up tonight or Sunday afternoon (I'm overnighting at a friends house Saturday).

So far, I've got 2 2'x4' sheets of 6mm Sintra, enough to get me going I think. Got templates printed out so I can cut 'em out and see how they look. I'll be getting a B-stock Westar 35 from Eternal Armory (It's just got a little hole in the trigger guard, nothing a little bond/epoxy can't fix), and I've sent some messages out about helmets. Got 2 flight suits on order, so I can be sure to get at least one that'll fit me. I've read the first 3 Republic Commando books, so I'm all hyped up!

I'll get some pics up of my planned color scheme as soon as I dig up my Flickr login.

Pics:

Color scheme 1.0 (too dark and bland):

2.0:

Aaaannnd finally 3.0 (little less armor, I may add back shin plates and everything later):

What do you guys think?

Sounds like you're off to a great start! When you're done cutting out the templates, you should tape them to yourself and send a pic here for members to check on your sizing and spacing. That way you don't cut materials based on templates that don't fit you. Nearly all templates will need some adjustments because everyone's body is different.

Can't wait to see how your Mando comes out! :)

Thanks vod! And yeah, I'll be sure to get pics up of my templates before I start cutting into my precious sintra supply.

-snip-

Armor templates cut! And don't worry, that's red sharpie, not blood...  ;D

This one's a bit to the side, thanks to the weird mirror. And please excuse my terrible grumpy/tired/smirk face, it was 11:30 or something when I took that. Also, my hand is at my belly button for reference.

These are the large Jango plates, from the Wizard of Light templates.

And I've got my two flight suits, I'll try them on and see which fits bets, then return them. And I'll hopefully be getting a buy'ce from Droodles.

Flight suit pics incoming, hopefully around lunch. I've got a 46 long and 48 long, and need your guys opinions on what looks best!  :D

EDIT: Pics!

48 long (more comfortable, give me better movement and lets me get an almost full squat):

And the 46 long (more fitting, but the crotch is a bit hit, and I can't raise my arms above the shoulder with out it coming up too far):

Chest plates may be a little wide. Hard to see at an angle and with bent arms.
Could you cross your arms?

A bit, but they catch. The do look a bit wide.... think I should go down to a medium?

Updated with flight suit pics BTW.

Thanks to Brandon and the guys over at Eternal Armory, I got an awesome deal on a B-stock Westar 35! Here it is getting all primered up in preparation for bondo, more primer, then black, grey, and red paint:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4349/36672835516_6834a252cf.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XSDSkw)

Also working on my rifle and hand plate, need more feedback for my chest plates (I'll try medium plates and see how they fit).

I'll update this post as the weaponry work advances.

And time for a pic dump:

The warzone:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4368/36061968783_a8d4d150bd.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WWF1Wt)

Primer magic (all the holes and divots are gone!):

Shiny:

and it disappears....

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4417/36036009774_6940d25518.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WUnYem)

to a nice dark grey:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4385/36474004960_e154eed6dc.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Xz5NWu)

Needs some work though, the humidity is making it take a zillion years to dry  :(

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4397/36699488012_410f3d2f0b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XV1tcj)

Sorry for the terrible flash, but here's it with my rifle, which needs the stock painted (I'm thinking the same grey as the pistol, to contrast a bit with the rest of the rifle):

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4391/36474005950_3e682a5149.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Xz5Pey)

I'm going to add a chopped off mag to the rifle, and the stock and maybe the bipod will be attached (all branding will be removed). I may add some glossy black stripes around the muzzle for a cool effect, and perhaps some red, but I don't think the gun needs it. Anything else I should to to get it looking more swarzy? (And BTW, the safety and trigger still work on the rifle, I filled in the English lettering, and all the guts of the arisoft gun have been stripped out and epoxied.

And that's the sum of my work over the weekend.

Does anyone know a good place to get Boba style boots in black/dark grey? I'd like some, but I don't even know what brand to look for, and if I get "actual" Boba Boots, they'll be overpriced and probably break if I just wear them around everywhere like I probably will  :P.

First off, your weapons are coming along quite nicely. Good job on the painting.

For the boots, I want to say they'll work as long as the logo is covered at the back and armor is added to the front of them

Keep it up  ;)

Awesome! Thanks for the complements, and thanks for replying. I was worried since pretty much no one else has replied but me updating stuff. I guess I update it at the wrong time or something.

About the boots, what do you think I could do to cover up the logo? And I was thinking of getting some of these as well, since I'm doing a lighter armor kit with no shin plates: https://www.etsy.com/listing/243133780/vintage-1950s-80s-swiss-military-gaiters?gpla=1&gao=0&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_-clothing-unisex_adult_clothing-other&utm_custom1=6af7f2ab-8357-44dd-bd2d-6cf71525b041&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiqTNBRDVARIsAGsd9MrGP4sWeiptYMzHRdgeqfEGRBtuny-4xaZYw9LOoRB92dRhuNotrXMaAoVVEALw_wcB  (https://www.etsy.com/listing/243133780/vintage-1950s-80s-swiss-military-gaiters?gpla=1&gao=0&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_-clothing-unisex_adult_clothing-other&utm_custom1=6af7f2ab-8357-44dd-bd2d-6cf71525b041&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiqTNBRDVARIsAGsd9MrGP4sWeiptYMzHRdgeqfEGRBtuny-4xaZYw9LOoRB92dRhuNotrXMaAoVVEALw_wcB) (there's some for $25 as well, but IDK how legit they are).

I was also thinking of stormtrooper style shines, though those would be really tricky to make.

EDIT: On second thought, looks like the gaiters would cover the logo, so problem solved.

Splitting this to a second post so it isn't too long, but here's a blaster update:

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4428/36798607592_9288dae5ed_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Y4LtZA)

Weathered awesomeness! Think I should do a black wash or does it look good enough as is? I’m also going to add the red in the little pockets on one side, and do you think I should clear coat it, or will that ruin the look...  :(

Also, I'm right handed, thus the extra weathering on that side where my finger has been "straight and off the trigger" for many trusty years of ownership.

hello matey, just a quick heads up... those boots look fine but they do seem rather expensive if you take a little time to shop around you can pick up the same boots or very similar for a fraction of the price. whilst looking for a pair for a vod in my clan i found a pair for £7.50 brand new + free shipping that's gotta be round the $10.00 mark. ;)

Awesome! I need to find some in size 11 (I wear 10.5 but like bigger boots), and need them to be pretty though... I'll try and shop around. I'd really love Rogue One boots, the ones Cassian and all the rebels wear, but those are way expensive and you have to mod them to get the leather flap on the front. Got any suggestions for good boots?

i believe what you may be talking about are called foundry boots they're safty boots used by guys who are around molten metals, the leather flap is to give the top of the foot a little more protection against splashes of hot metal try searching e-bay for foundry boots.

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, lots of them are close, but look too modern and sneaker-like. I really just need tough boots though, since I have black leather gaiters that'll cover any laces and such. They need a proper heel though, so the under strap on the gaiters will fit.

And templates cut! Medium this time, they seem to fit me better (and since the lighting in the bathroom is so terrible, the green lines are where my chest ends and where my belly button is at);

With sintra you can always cut some more if the plates are too big or uncomfortable, so just go for it!

I have most definitely and absolutely have not been cutting Sintra. As you can see from my flight suit and headgear:

( I also did not get a haircut)

And I certainly didn't trace this with spray paint:

Yup! Shaping and bending is next... gotta cut out knee plates and a backplate (I'll need a bigger piece of sintra than the 2'x4' one I have). I won't get any done this weekend/next week though, since I'm going to Florida with my family.

There are lots of good ways to either make a vest, or ways to buy one. I made mine based on the shape and style of my old volleyball sleeveless shirt.

I don't trust my sewing skills though, so I'd rather buy one. But they're about $95... I may have enough left over after I buy a .22 rifle.

That would be nice   I haven't seen any well paying ones yet though. I'll let you know if I come across a good one! Two Mandos are better than one, eh?  ;)

For sure! Seems I’ll have to keep hunting numbers in the wild spreadsheet plains for now.

Yep. The Star Wars movies never touch on the day to day life of a "Simple man trying to make his way in the universe", just the high/low/exciting points.

Oooo. Nice vest choice Vod. :) May the credits flow your way for them.

As an aside, I like the way your plates are turning out, and your flight suit looks fantastic. Backplates are a PITA though, so get help with those if you have a clan close to you.

Have you got any ideas for how you're going to attach your plates?

Thanks for the kind words vod! For a backplate, I’m thinking of going with a segmented one for less pain and agony shaping it, just gotta decide what type I want. As for attaching, I’m thinking industrial strength Velcro at first, since a plate sized swath of that will be insanely tough. My hand plates are attached with it and there’s no way they’ll slip off, and they’re pretty tricky to pull off too. Then once I get my spacing just perfect, if it moves at all I can use rivets or screws.

I did my back plate segmented as well and it did help a great deal. I just had to get help shaping the top part, and everything else went from there. Be aware though that sometimes the back plate will have the tendency to stick out a bit at the base. I will need to adjust mine in the future, and make sure my velcro is on tight.
I usually use a 2 part epoxy glue for the velcro on the back of plates to make sure it stays. On cloth I sew the snot out of it. :D
I also use snaps for my plates, which works great as well. Just make sure to reinforce the place where you make the small hole for the snap to fit through. Keeps the snap from being pulled directly out.

They look pretty good as well, if done right (though I can always get a cool cape if I mess it up). I need to decide what I'm doing for shoulder and knee armor as well, then get some gaunts. Factor in the backplate and helmet and that should be it as far as hard armor goes.

For soft parts, I need to work on a kama, get a vest, make sure my flight suit is fitted just right (I'll know for sure once everything is one) and get some boots. Also gotta cover up some logos on my gloves. I love Mechanix gloves, but they put a massive amount of logos covering the entire back of the gloves.

I love capes! (Don't listen to Edna Mode, she's just a cape-hater) Do you have any ideas on what kind of gadgets you want on your gauntlets?

Hehe. We're Mandos, not puny superheroes. And jetpacks are the things that betray you, not capes (See Jango and Boba, both put out of action due to jetpack malfunctions).

As for gadgets, something like a Raspberry Pi would be cool, but I don't want my gaunts too cluttered. Probably a small knife and perhaps a dart/light cable launcher. The less things to go wrong on a mission, the better.

Yes, no jetpacks!  I really like the idea of a cable launcher! Kinda need that if you don't have a jetpack to fly you up those walls

I tried segmented back myself. Went a bit too far with that, cause I divided it horizontally and vertically. It was too much to harness (pun  intended ;) ) so in the end i left horizontal division but riveted it solid on vertical line. Works great since then!

Yeah, I’m going to go with just horizontal as well. Too many divides and you open yourself up a lot to stabbies. Basically any gap in your armor is a weakness, so you want to keep those to a minimum while retaining mobility.

Most likely Velcro as well, possibly rivets or some type of screw/bolt. Something that will hold them on tight!

Not really any progress lately, I've been slacking off on buying a heat gun and I'm waiting for my helmet to get here (In the mail! Woot!). But if any of y'all play Battlefront 2015, a friend (model by the name of Deggial Nox) made a custom skin for Boba Fett based off of my color scheme. I'll try and get a vid up later or something, so make sure to remind me!

Here, this is from a modding channel on YouTube showing off the skin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMAbh_LKUZg

So imagine that, except on a 6' 3" guy, using a Westar and A280 based rifle, and that's what my kit will look like.

Of course! How could I not show off my buy’ce? Hopefully the weather will decide to have one more warm spell so I can get it painted before winter.  Should be awesome! I need to pick up some green tint as well. Though my welding visor is already dark dark green, so I’ll try it and see.

How’s your kit coming along?

I just realized I totally ignored your question about my own kit! I'm so sorry!  :o

To answer your question though, same as you. I'm still helping my Dad harvest crops (not to mention working at my regular job, the library).
I'm also leaving for Florida this Sat, so not going to get anything done for awhile yet.  >:(

I am reconsidering adding a jetpack to my kit after seeing Sabine's in Rebels 3.
What do you think?

Hmm... jetpacks look cool, but you can't actually fly with one yet. So I'd rather not carry the weight of one. Plus, Jango died when his jetpack failed, and Bob's jetpack going off sent him to a not so nice hotel for a few days. So if you're using them like Sabine, flying around in the open, then they're dope. If you're sneaking along the ground or in close quarters combat, then they are literally a drag.

Gist of it is, it all depends on where you Mando is and what she's doing.

No prob! If you look above a bit, I linked a Youtube vid of a skin in EA's Battlefront game. It's based off my color scheme, so that's basically what my kit will look like when done, or at least similar.

I've had a lot of people recommend using bike helmet foam pads because they can be removed once they get sweaty and smelly. I currently have just a standard piece of foam that I'm using mainly as a cushion (because my buy'ce is heavy!)

I think I want a jetpack so that I can easily reach higher ground in a fight. It worked out really well in Obi-Wan's favor  ;)

I'm gonna go with combat helmet pads, they look pretty good.

And the high ground tactic is certainly useful... though you could just carry a ton of thermal dets, and use them to *cough* lower the ground around you, putting you on the high ground without a jetpack...  ;)

Finally got my shebs moving on my kit, been working a bit on my helmet lately. Got the keyslots in, and once the epoxy is properly dried I'll sand it, fill in some spots with Bondo, and then I can hit it with some more primer!

I'm thinking I should figure out the visor mounting system (and attach the base earcap parts) before I actually start painting. What's the best way to actually attach the visor? I've seen some people use special screw kits but I forget what they're called.

Welcome back!

I've seen visor attachments done a couple of different ways. I have one bucket that has threaded posts with nuts and washers holding the visor in. I've also heard of folks using binding posts/chicago screws for the visor, and my current bucket uses the tried-and-true hot glue method.

As far as attaching your visor itself, I'd suggest holding off until after you finish your painting, and just insert a piece of cardstock to prevent the mandibles from warping while you do all of your paintwork and weathering. It'll keep you from having to mask your visor and remove the possibility of getting paint on it.

Cheers, vod!

Chicago screws, that's what they were. But being kinda lazy I may just go for the hot glue method. :P Cardstock is definitely a good idea, I already had to take my heatgun to it after I accidentally stacked my bike on it and warped it... (#zandoisapro) and I'd like to avoid repeating that. Thanks for the tips vod!
