Title: First build
Post by: Ruug'la Tal on Jun 07, 2018, 11:15 AM
Alright people...finally got this figured out.

Started my new wip...black leather flak, gloves, boots and spats. Gray flight suit. Red armor. Going for medium armor class with red cape and loincloth. I'm still working on my design but got this together last night.

Going to shorten the bottom of the vest 3 inches and sleeves 2 inches when hemmed. I am also adding a neck seal and will be weathering all.
Is my vest acceptable?

First off it's great to see you work on soft parts first. Seems like a lot of vode get their buy'ce and plates done then stagnate trying to get the soft parts done. I built my kit in the order I put it on (flight suit, boots, vest, plates then belts). That way you can fit test each item as you complete it and all fits correctly when you're done. ;)

It would be good to see back and side pictures, back in particular. You could maybe get the jacket mod to work. As for your boots - no visible laces. Many use spats to get that look; be careful of exposed, obvious laces and zippers, and pockets depending on style (covered Boba pockets are OK).

The vest cut-down sounds good. If you look at Boba, he has shirt sleeves under the flack vest. It looks like you're trying to maybe combine the two? I'd cut it down to a vest then add short sleeves if that's what you're going for.

Good start. Look forward to seeing you at the armor party.

Title: Re: First build...templates
Post by: Ruug'la Tal on Jun 10, 2018, 08:34 PM
More pics...figured id post this pic. its what i am using for inspiration. I have a question on the external shoulder straps, and whether they are permissible for approval.
I am planning on creating a harness that can be interchangeable with a jetpack or a sniper rifle. the pic below shows an approximation of the shoulder straps i am proposing.

(picture comes via Pintrest, not my creation.)

Armor templates submitted for critique. Sizing and spacing were assisted by my helpful clan members Rick and Justin at our armor party this afternoon.
I'm going to use 6 mil Sintra. I know the spacing doesn't show perfect taped up but i have 3/4 of an inch between nec and chest and between chest and ab.
I have 1/4 inch between chest plates and around diamond.

I found your WIP!  I kept meaning to look for it, and then kept forgetting.  You've got a good start.  I'll echo what Rick said and tell you that starting from inside out with soft parts first is a really smart idea.

So the shoulder straps would likely be permissible, but you want app team approval on stuff like that before you get too far.  If one of the app team members does not comment in your WIP thread (which they often do) and say for certain, you can ask them directly by start a thread on the Q&A board (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?board=420.0).  That's your direct line to them.

Plate placement looks pretty good, and the spacing is always hard to tell until you get the real deal cut out and starting placing it on your vest.  The plates are likely going to be a little on the big side, but that a GOOD thing as opposed to them being too small.  You can always trim some off.  Making them bigger is a little trickier.

Overall, I like the concept art you're drawing inspiration from.  Keep at it.  Can't wait to meet you at the next armor party.  OYA!
Title: Re: First build
Post by: Shammah on Jun 10, 2018, 11:13 PM
I like the shape. The height looks good, but I wonder if it doesn't need to be a little narrower. I'd consider (because of the tabs on the collar and chest) redrawing the template a 1/4" narrower on both sides and re-centering the tabs. Thinking if you just trimmed them down again the tabs would no longer be centered well on the chest plates (if you catch my meaning). It would give you the chance to thicken up the fangs (lower area) on your chest plates and narrow down the ab plate (get back to more of the geometry you originally had before trimming down today).

Were you going to have a standard diamond shape or fit in one to the hole that's there now?

I like where you're going with this. ;)

with the exposed shoulder strapping, so long as it is in universe, it should be fine.
just to CYA go ahead and post a QnA with app team and ask about it to get a total clarification.
The issue you will run into is the straps and whatever is on the back pushing down with weight will move and mess up the shaping of your chest armor. so be sure you keep that in mind going forward.
good luck in your build, and you are doing it the right order, get those soft parts done first!

Would you be opposed to trying on a set of templates about an inch smaller all around?
Im curious to see how it would look while giving you more room for movement.

Also the height of the ab needs to be no more than half the width .5:1 (thanks sep for the reminder)

It is also suggested to move the waist items up to your waist as they appear to be on your hips ( thanks keely for the reminder)

The more you fix now the easier it gets later. Focusing on soft parts and getting those right before moving on to the armor.

Sorry for the mistake, Only half your comments loaded.
I have corrected the ab plate. It is exactly half as tall as it is wide.

I will take the comments on gear sitting to low on the hips to heart when i do the final design on the girth belt.

I got restless working on soft parts and templates. i needed to use power!
My helmet blank....fits my head with the same sizing as a helmet i tried on at the armor party.
Time to print out some templates....ugh....more templates!
Going to use Boba 1:1 templates.

Title: Re: First Build: Making Progress
Post by: Ruug'la Tal on Jun 23, 2018, 08:34 PM
Had a little solo armor party.
Collar, chest, diamond and ab cut out and sanded. Each layer is 3mm for a 6mm total.
Did a rivet, paint and weathering test on my diamond.
Silver, bronze and silver on the back layer...
Rivets attached. Silver, bronze, dark red and a dark brown wash for the top layer.
I waited till each layer of paint was tacky and did a dry wash so it nicked it up nice.
I like it, but i think some black antiquing ould really make it pop.

I'm super digging this WIP.  I might suggest you also put this WIP on your profile (the little yellow writing at the bottom of everybody's profile)  makes it super easy to find.
Also,  the design and idea of overlapping sintra has a great look to it.  Just be aware that when you go to shape it, the overlapping plates might not bend at the same shape and spacing that they do laying flat.  Might take some tweeking to get right but from what I've seen of your stuff that should be no problem for you.  Keep up the great work!
Title: Re: First build
Post by: Shammah on Jun 24, 2018, 09:57 PM
That really is some nice work. Have you tried shaping the double thickness sintra? I have no experience so it would be nice to know how it does.

Quick update...
Double Layer and final paint and weathering.
Im kind of painting with a force hunter in the back of my mind...
Is that the kind of carbon scoring and damage i am looking for?
I think the double layer bent well.
I want it to look like i've been battling for decades.
How does it look Vods?

It is looking pretty solid. Loving the color layering and the darker scorched area.
Title: Re: First build
Post by: Shammah on Jun 28, 2018, 09:29 AM
I like it! I've seen people layering up 3 mm for a while now, but hadn't really had a chance to follow their builds. Now we know - it shapes well. I really like where you're going with this. As for the scoring, I think that's the idea. Looks like a light saber took a wack at you to me, but wouldn't it have at least curled the paint? Don't know.
Title: Re: First build
Post by: Ruug'la Tal on Jun 28, 2018, 06:56 PM
I would have to agree with you Vod...
Definitely needed more substantial damage if i'm in combat with lightsabers.
I want it to resemble a cartorized effect in the armor with a bit of gloss in the black.
These pieces i would say are completely done.
I really like how the red and the carbon scoring create a type of camouflage
Like I said Im a the tail end of my days, grizzled vet, warrior of hundreds of force user battles.
I want my armor, trophies and gear to tell that tail.
What you all think?
I need the feedback!
Title: Re: First build
Post by: Shammah on Jun 29, 2018, 04:52 PM
Nice. ;) The trick may be in getting that same effect in your soft parts. The leather could be a challenge; weathering without damaging.

Front armor finished...
I really like the major damage.

You are right, matching the damage to my soft parts is going to be tricky.
Im thinking a lot of visible mending and burns along with some additional wrapping.
Any ideas are welcome.

Ruug'la Tal that is a very nice build you have going. While I am extremely happy with the way mine has turned out there are people like you that make me say "Damn I wish mine looked that good!"

I love the layered design and the color scheme. Did you use textured spray paint to help get that effect?
Title: Re: First build

Base coat...Krylon hammered finish silver, let dry and set up.
Second coat...Krylon flat red,
Wait till tacky and dry brush and sponge...Red will pull up and expose silver.
Let everything set up and cure.
Spot cover and antique with black shoe polish. Apply and rub off.
Damage was created with a grinder.
Scars are covered with a streak of black krylon.
Dry brush silver in the scars and antique the whole thing again.

Wala!

Woah!! This looks mad cool! Someone mentioned that the knees and shins can't overlap, and they are correct. That will be an issue. You have 2 different options: you can either trim down the shin armor to give it spacing, OR you can combine the knee and shin armor to make shnees. Either or will fix this. The armor is awesome though, I can't wait to see it done!

Flight suit looks to be tailored pretty well from the pic you posted.  Love the gaiters and girth belt.  I like the texture on the vest.  Double check with the app team, but I think you'll have to make sure that the zipper is hidden either under your plates or some other way (sewn over flap, etc).

Correct Mr. Utensil, any and all zippers will need to be covered, either by a flap or by plates. That's some nice soft parts there. This isn't a CRL thing or anything, but I'd recommend (while it's still summertime) taking a walk around the block once or twice in your soft parts, just to make sure you don't overheat!  ;) Nice work there, vod. 3d Printers are awesome, but 3d printed props need a bit of work to be approved. 3d printing lines have to be eliminated.  - Basically, if you can look at it, and tell it was 3d printed, as opposed to resin cast, or some other build method, you're not done smoothing yet.

If those macro's are going to be part of your approved kit, you're going to need to smooth the print lines more and then repaint after words.   Sandpaper, bondo glazing putty, and filler primer will all help you in your quest to remove the lines.   This applies to all 3d printed prop and costume elements on a kit.

Good work on the paint.

EDIT:
My friend just sent me some progress photos of the same set of Macros I printed for her:

Nice Job Ruug'la. I meant to say the other day, make sure the wiring is well weatherproofed. Even if you don't really sweat the moisture gets pretty heavy under all your plates.

One more coat of paint and fasteners, had to wait at least till it was 20 degrees. Really trying to focus and finish each piece before moving to the next. Everything is about 70% done, just fine tuning it.

Looks great! The loin cloth is a bit wide as is. Some suggestions I would recommend would be to either narrow the width to where it's about as wide as your loin trauma plates or you could narrow and shape the loin to follow the shape of said trauma plates.

This next one isn't a CRL violation, more a suggestion. I would recommend shortening the loin to come above your knees as well. Best of luck with the rest of your build!  :mcq1:

95% of this kit is out of this world. My one piece I would wish to see improved is the loincloth/armored cod. I think it looks odd that the plates do not extend the length of the fabric or that the fabric isn't as narrow as the plates. (the latter makes more sense to me). The detail on the plates is wonderful.  :cookie: Also that material for the cape i've seen used only once before and it looks great in this application too.

Post by: Shammah on Mar 05, 2019, 07:52 PM
Really appreciate all the little details you've put into this kit. I have to agree with Bryn though, there's something about the loin cloth and that may fix it. Other than that, get the new fabrics dirtied up and you're about done.

On a practical note, you may want to consider attaching your ammo belt to your girth somehow in the future. That would keep them aligned and looking good through a whole day of trooping without having to worry about it. ;)

The kit is looking amazing, I'm loving the detail! It does appear that the torso plates will need some trimming for spacing overall. The chest plates and diamond appear a bit crowded, but it looks like they might need a bit of a trim all around.

Getting close vod!  :mcq1:

Loin cloth redone, looks much more like a finished piece now. I do agree that the narrowing of it was needed.

I now have velcro on the inside of my ammo belt that holds onto my girth belt to address movement.

Trimmed and permanently set snaps for proper spacing of plates.

Pre App Update...
After a year of cutting, bending, sewing, fabrication and paint im am posting these shots im using for Pre-App.
Crazy to think that when i started this process I figured 3 months....so foolish.
Thanks to my clan for all their help and advise. And to my girlfriend for putting up with a Mandalorian in the house.
Just figured you guys and gals might be curious what I ended up with.

Btw, gearing fully up unearthed a few issues with fit and design to be fixed.
Putting things on to fit things one or two pieces at a time is a lot different from a full kit.
Ill pust my fix list as they are addressed and hopefully end with OM photos. cross my fingers.

Great work here!

Minor suggestions on a very very very well done kit: loin cloth and cape loo a bit long, I would trim them down a bit to make trooping easier. Cape would also benefit from some additional weathering too.

I look forward to seeing this kit official very soon. (I have a feeling it will come quickly)
