Title: Roush's armor wip
Post by: Roushmustang on Jun 08, 2018, 06:40 PM
I'm working on the soft stuff so it was time to get started on the fun stuff

I started with my pattern test fit

Moved onto making a paint design for it

and now I'm onto placing my patterns onto sintra for cutting

I went to an armor party today and got some of my armor shaped. Still need to shape knees, shoulders, & belly armor.

Those shaped pieces look good, but it's hard to tell when they're not on your body. It's always a help if you can get to armor parties with OMs!  :like:

Also, my two cents... as someone who has worn a wraparound codpiece like that, you may find it uncomfortable. I sure did. Certainly not easy to pee when you're in kit! You may decide that you want to trim the sides down. But you can change that fairly easily once you've finished the armor.

Yeah having an om shape my back plate then teach me the proper bends for the other pieces was indespensable. As far as cod goes we talked about it at the party and yes I think I'm going with shorter cod piece

I briefly met you the other day at the armor party. My wife was the one working on her chest plate while I mostly kept the kids form touching stuff they shouldnt. Love the UCF theme. Keep up the good work!

Thanks man, glad the idea is well received because black and gold runs through my veins.

sounds like you have found your local people and you are getting the help you need. do you happen to have pictures of your plates on you so we can double check your spacing and whatnot?  love the color scheme and the plate cuts look great.

Yeah my clan has been great. No pics of the armor on me yet, but they formed my back plate on me and were patient with all my "does this look right so far" questions & pauses so I'm confident I'm on the right track

I know my thread let itself die but the last couple of months have been a whirl wind. I managed to make it to another armor party and started banging out my gauntlet pieces

And here is one of them formed but not assembled along with my newly formed cod piece. I promise the other gauntlet is formed too. I'm going to use piano hinge to give them a clam shell style closure and I'm working on a way to disguise magnets to keep them closed

I got a little more work done the other day. The 2nd part of the cod piece was cut out, sanded, then e6000'd onto the base. I'll apply some bondo and sand it down to give it a nice 3d'ish effect

Moved onto the gauntlets while the glue cured. I ran to hobby lobby and picked up some hinges to act as the closer, then I glued them to the inside of the sintra so I get a nice clean look when shut

Heres a shot with 2 hinges side by side and fully cured. I'm now currently glueing the other half of the gauntlet to the other side of the hinge

Be sure to leave room for wrist movement so you dont end up with banged and bruised to neck wrists. My first set left nasty bruises.

Nice clean work with the mounting of the hinges.

Thank you. Definitely accounted for the wrist movement when drafting the pattern

The magnets are now on

And bondo applied, I sanded down the one side a little too much for my liking so I applied a little more to fix it which is giving that side the pinky color

Put the sealant on and going to sand it down
(http://i.imgur.com/XSioA5X.jpg)

I took advantage of the few low humidity days Florida got to lay down some paint on the cod piece. The top plate will stay gold with the bottom plate eventually becoming black

Here is the cod plate with the black layered on

I got around to doing a fit test on the plates since I'm 99% finished with my flak vest.

I know it's not 100% correct because the tape slipped but I think everything looks pretty good size wise

Now I think I'm going to have to adjust the collar armor a bit more and I know I need to adjust the chest plates

How do the shoulders look? (Again I know a little wonky as the tape slipped right before the photo was snapped)

I would recommend moving everything up, collar should be almost choking you. Chest plates (and spacing in general) should be about a thumbs width apart, so I'd bring them up and closer together. Same with the ab. Cod and gauntlets look like they're coming along well!

Thank you, I want to sure how far up the collar should be. Spacing wise my plates are further apart then they should be due to tape slippage. I adjusted some of the plates to eliminate plate float as well. Question about where the collar/back plate meet. Does it look good as is or do I need to make them more flush with each other?

I agree with Kol as well on spacing, needs to be almost choking. Everything width wide looks a hair big. I wouldn't adjust until you have placement of the templates fixed and the spacing plate to plate fixed. then you will know if you need to scale the width back a hair! Keep up the great work vod! You got this!!!

I would also add that the backplate and collar should line up on the shoulder seems. You may want to add some width to the shoulders of your backplate, as they appear to be more narrow than the collar.

Thank you both. I'll adjust the spacing tomorrow and throw up another photo. As far as the collar and shoulder go I may just trim from the collar, especially if the plates are a smidge too big

Alright everyone. Heres the next spacing photo:

That spacing looks pretty good! The belly plate could come up a smidge though.  :like:

Awesome! I still have to fix the back plate but at least we're getting closer

Another big step towards completion was made these last few days. All my armor is now velcroed and ready for paint. Just waiting on the weather

(Not pictured is the back plate, chest diamond, and other shoulder (which is currently in primer drying))

At looking at you plates on the last photos you posted, everything still looks a bit wide. The chest plates are riding in your arm pit a little too much and need to be sized down in my opinion. How is your mobility? Can you place your hands together in front of your chest and the plates not dig into you? I would address this issue before you get way to far into paint! And finally, the shaping on the plates may need tweaking a little more, it doesn't look as if the plates hug your body as well as they should, which will leave gaps when the plates are attached to the vest. you shouldn't be getting gaps between the plates and vest if formed to you correctly.

Nice progress though, like how its coming along for you!!!

I did fix some of the sizing things. The collar armor got trimmed a bit which brought the chest plates in a bit. The float in the photos was just a result of the bottoms of the chest plates not being taped down to well but they definitely hug me. Now that its velcroed I'll probably do another run before I officially paint just to get a final nod from my house, they've given me the approval so far up to this point
