Title: Aposematic Mando WIP
Post by: DARKhoblin on Jan 15, 2019, 10:36 PM
Howdy, ner vode!

I am moving my WIP from the Hett'ciri forum to get more eyes on my kit, just to make sure the shapes are looking right! I have had so much help from everyone from the BC clan, Wasu'ran! My kit is looking really good so far because of them and help from the ap team.  :<3: Ya'll are awesome

SO! My first concept for my mando was my Twi'lek, which I do still plan to do. My concept art:
(http://i.imgur.com/CT6Hqts.jpg) (https://imgur.com/CT6Hqts)

I love the mask, the thighs, the weird purple bacta, the armored Lekku...ONE DAY. But for now, I wanted to stick to something more traditional!
(http://i.imgur.com/o760A1m.jpg) (https://imgur.com/o760A1m)

I painted this after a dream I had with a mando kit-less friend...don't think he will be kit-less for very long. haha
(http://i.imgur.com/AgulpEK.jpg) (https://imgur.com/AgulpEK)

So, this is where my kit is sitting at the moment, and the back:
(http://i.imgur.com/mB5OPoy.jpg) (https://imgur.com/mB5OPoy)

I definitely want to gradient dye my kama and loin cloth with a more powerful dye. It looks white.

(http://i.imgur.com/ZYhYr0e.jpg) (https://imgur.com/ZYhYr0e)
A shot of my plates flat on. I took some inspiration from the Clan Wren gorget but the rest is classic Boba/Jango.

And finally! My Baby!
(http://i.imgur.com/wQj1yg2.jpg) (https://imgur.com/wQj1yg2)
(http://i.imgur.com/wcpJ6re.jpg) (https://imgur.com/wcpJ6re)
(http://i.imgur.com/85zeXxF.jpg) (https://imgur.com/85zeXxF)

My custom helmet, to be 3d printed! I loved NME's assassin helmet, but my head is child sized. And they build helmets for an average man's head, which to me is gigantic. So I modeled myself a helmet with similar cheeks and...mood. The 'Y' visor makes it look a little more feminine and...dangerous. And as a five foot one-inch young lady who is eighty-eight lbs...I need all the help I can get to look dangerous. Speaking of which...

There's a phenomenon in nature called Aposematism, warning coloration. "It describes a family of antipredator adaptations in which a warning signal is associated with the unprofitability of a prey item to potential predators. "  Many small, toxic animals developed these brightly colored markings to keep themselves safe. If you took away the colours of a toxic dart frog, Its just....a frog. not very freaky looking. This is my big inspiration behind my choice of colour and dramatic angles!

So that Is where I am at! I'd love any critique or thoughts on how this looks so far! I do have some more of this on the Hett'ciri, Alberta clan forum so be sure to check that if you need to see more of the stuff and things.

Thank ya'll!  :<3:

I really like the look of your helmet :) You doing the modelling? If so, respect.  My current bucket is my model and print.

Oranges and blues are classic, and I like your ideas for the markings -- earth inspired but not earthy at all.

given the poses of your photos it's hard to speak to things like spacing, but nothing's jumping out at me that's out of sorts. When you submit your app photos, have your Ruus send in an additional photo without the scarf that shows your collar is correctly placed.

You've got some nice details in the kit already, like the pleats on your quads.

What's your plan for weathering? Keeping it fairly clean, medium, or fell in a swamp?

Keep up the good work!

I did model the helmet, thank you! Modo crashes....often.

Thank you for reminding me of my scarf, I do need to sand down my backplate -slightly- to match up my gorget a bit better, currently on an angle. as for weathering, my favorite part of costume making! Somewhere between medium and fell in a swamp, for sure. Haha, I don't want scratches across my visor, but I thought about putting in a huge gash of missing paint on the side of the helmet where someone tried to shove the characters head against a rapidly moving metal object or something. Like a train or....something.

I have a hole saw bit that I have dragged across fabric to tear it up so I may start with weathering my soft stuff.

Don't know much about Modo, I've got a machining background so I went for something familiar to the cad I worked with 20 years ago -- Fusion 360.

Quote
I don't want scratches across my visor

No matter how beat up the rest of your kit is, you don't have to weather your actual visor -- it's a safety thing, and if you were depending on your sight, you'd swap out that visor when you got back to the ship.

Rest of that sounds great, I'll be following your build with interest.

Fusion 360 is an awesome program, I struggle with it a lot. And with the visor, I was referring to the strange three clawed beasts that only attack our helmets! haha

Lol roger! If I see a 3 clawed beast, I shoot to kill.

Glad to see this kit on the forums immediately after I commented on it on FB. Consider me following!

Keep up the good work.

Love that custom helmet. Looks really similar to my helm so I am a bit biased.

This is going to be a great looking kit. I can't wait to see where it goes. You definitely have some skills.

I'm trying my own hand at designing a bucket. I can only hope it looks as good as yours is shaping up to be.

Well, I have had a bit of an adventure with my WIP situation. I have now moved to a new province and I was asked to post a win in like three different locations. So Ive decided to just update this one seeing as lots of people are following this one and are eager to see progress!

I have zero idea what I uploaded to the other posts so I'll try to not double post.

Armor Updates:

I Think I may need to make a new vest haha

Heres my idea for my new cod bit:

All I can think is that you're gonna have a lot of masking with that paint design.  :o

Things looking very solid. You may wish to shape the plates a bit more on your upper chest to lay flatter, but with you taking your own pictures they could be shifted.

That armored cod should work great! I am working on one similar for another application.

Bryn,

Noted, I thought there was maybe one last thing i could do to my plates to make them look just a bit better and that might be it. I thought about that with the paint too, but I'll actually be handpainting that all. Haha

HOLY SMOKE WE GETTIN THERE

NEW VEST, WHO DIS
(https://i.imgur.com/4ioSEG8.jpg)
Huge thanks to my pal Justin for the leather on my new vest! I ended up having to take in the back

The Great Collar Struggle
(https://i.imgur.com/0SbV3EH.jpg)
See how far my collar was sagging? My partner suggested a snap my collar instead of velcro. But it sits like an inch off my body, cause we did the snaps wrong. But we will figure that out.

This is after taking in the back, the collar is sitting much more where it needs to be <3 My velcro is kinda lifting so the chest plate is floating in this pic ahha

Neck Seal (Mandalorian, Asajj Ventress, custom Saber Guild Sith.)
And the neck seal pattern is happening.
Had to run to the Flagship Eclipse forums/CRLs on the Asajj Ventress Betrayed neck seal and watch the episode. I don't want to make 20 neck seals for different costumes. So I'm making ONE.

Armor Spacing
(https://i.imgur.com/vHB1jlW.jpg)
Had another member check out my spacing, he fussed with my diamond a bit Haha, This was before I took in the back, so these look a bit low, but it still sits really nicely.  Like...
I can cross my arms and the plate don't shift at all.  And they still don't shift after the vest was taken in.

Painting the Helmet
(https://i.imgur.com/8ZaiDQI.jpg)
The ruby rub n buff is a bit of learning curve but its result is beautiful!
Pre Black wash
(https://i.imgur.com/T8vm5g2.jpg)
Post Blackwash

Salt/Age patina
(https://i.imgur.com/ifPK1EI.jpg)

A few Extra things

Cod plate patterns! These are now cut, shaped and painted
(https://i.imgur.com/a1buG0R.jpg)

Some armband pouches made from old mint tins. This does fit over my flight suit and it will sit probably a bit lower to accommodate my trooper shoulders.

Homemade gloves! That don't suck!  This is probably the 5th pair of gloves ive made and theyre the only functional ones.

What I have learned
(https://i.imgur.com/1do3Iu4.jpg)

When working with Ruby or Gold rub n buff, you have to rub it aggressively against your hands to properly heat it. It's a very tricky application. You have to rub the crap out of it. And when applied to a chrome or a black primer, it will turn completely black. So apply it to a light base.

Visors are on their way and doing the rest of the attachments and fixes!

That VEST, I'm in love.  :<3: What pattern did you use for it?

Also, those plates...gorgeous. Seriously. What thickness is your material?

Well that is quite an image dump!

On the collar - dont be afraid to start shaping over to get it to sit how you want. Sintra is relatively forgiving and if heating is done gently, you can avoid damaging the paint (using hot water should work). Looks like the other plates are sitting much better, specifically in the front shots.

Also once you get your neck seal in, things really will take shape.

Great job on the bucket paint + wash!

I have such a bad habit of tossing out my patterns, but It could be easily replicated! I actually just took a tee shirt that fit me nicely and based it off that. I kinda taught myself pattern drafting (over the course of about 3 years of sewing). I fit it as best I could for the mock-up and gave generous seam allowances for the final. Its lined with a smooth material so it moves around the body rather than catching on my flight suit and distorting the plates.

I'm using 6mm Sintra. I put a lot of time into the bevel. Haha

Title: Re: Aposematic Mando WIP *BIG OL UPDATE*
Post by: DARKhoblin on Feb 24, 2020, 10:32 PM
BOY HOWDY  :<3:

It's been some time! I'm about half way through school and its going very well, so is the progress on my Kit! Here are my updates since october!

Check it out! I can wear my kit!
Mostly.

I wore my kit to my schools halloween event and it performed very nicely, The only thing that really bothered me was my foot and hand plates, I'm not into the shape of them anymore and they not not sit right at all. So those are being scrapped, next were my shoulder bells. which I had actually already 3D modeled them to be printed. I also gifted my classic shoulders to a friend in Hettciri, (Alberta.)

Here are my models! Theyre just stormtrooper shoulders, one with the stripe removed so i could add a house/clan crest.

Now for the test of cold! I got to shoot with friends from Hettciri, (Alberta.) The mountains are as cold and unforgiving as ever. However my new shoulders were done and we rigged up my scabbards for my Dagger and Sword.

Right after our shoot, I designed myself a new kit. Inspired by deathtroopers.

But I am NOT rebuilding my whole kit. So I'm going to focus on the upgrades I need for app and then come back to this design in like...10 years.

And here are the Kit updates I personally believe I need before app, any other crit is well appreciated!

Bucket

-  My visor is not dark enough so I will need to tint it.
- Possibly some antennae. Not necessary but...y'know.

Belt

- My Belt is very flexible and sits really weird if its tight, So I think im going to make a jedi layered belt so things sit a bit better.

Legs

- Oh my word my shins and knees are very, very tight ahah. Above, I've designed some sectioned shins to mimic my back plates and cod plates. And to accompany, some flexible shnees designed by a friend from Hetciri clan, (Alberta.)

- Thigh plates! To help with composition consistency.

Other

- I may sew myself an actual flight suit, the clothes I wear with my kit are fine but are a tad tight and I believe could look more swarsy!

So thats that! Thanks to everyone still following along with my build, I know I'm not very present but, as I said. School is half way and I'm very excited!

Oya, Vode! <3

Oh my! That's a bit of a jump in progress!  couple of things I want to check:
What is the height of those heels? If they're larger than 3" or 7.5cm, they will have to be reduced in height or replaced.
Do you have any photos of the scarf from the picture? It looks like the material may not be durable and may need to be replaced with a sturdier fabric.
I would recommend adjusting the knees higher to that they don't slip under the shins. I know you mentioned shnees, but if you decide to stick with the knees, I would recommend this.

This turned out awesome! So glad to see it all together!

Is that a leather bikini with plates attached to it???

If so, that's kind of brilliant! Haha

Your kit looks awesome!! I really love your paint scheme; especially the helmet!
Title: Re: Aposematic Mando WIP
Post by: DARKhoblin on Feb 25, 2020, 12:47 AM
Hey all!   :<3:

Thanks for checkin my stuff out!

Haha, that is a handmade leather cod. I'm not sure of anyone who makes leather bikinis and if I did, .....I would Ironically get one. The heels on my boots are 2 Inches in height, they're pretty comfortable and I'm fairly competent in them, I can run in them.

As for the scarf, its a lightweight linen/cheesecloth...ish. material. I hesitate to call it that because it is thicker than cheesecloth. It flows REALLY nicely, which I do tend to prefer over heavier fabrics that don't move as much.

My present knees are realllly tight on my knee. and they're printed, otherwise I'd just reshape em like I did with my collar.

Title: Re: Aposematic Mando WIP
Post by: DARKhoblin on Feb 25, 2020, 12:52 AM
If the scarf is too light weight looking, I'm always willing to take on a heavier linen, I'll just have to spend some time figuring out if I want to embroider it or make it a half cape or somthin.
Title: Re: Aposematic Mando WIP
Post by: Slade Kel on Feb 27, 2020, 06:03 PM
I will admit to skimming the first two pages, since your started your build early last year. That said, I can't pick out almost anything that needs reworking from a visual perspective, save that your belt-pouches-straps-bikini thing might all need a bit of more visible weathering for approval. It was something I got dinged on myself; weathering on my pouches and holsters wasn't visible enough. For the knees, if you don't switch to shnees, you can actually reshape 3d prints a little, depending on the base print material (PLA, ABS, etcetera). You might be able to loosen them up a hair with careful use of a heat gun so you can set them properly.

The great thing about Twi'lek is that upgrading a standard kit to a Twi kit mostly just means a new helmet and an armored lekku head piece!

My only other suggestion is a personal preference (that people who follow my build comments are probably getting sick of seeing, lol), the which is to add thigh plates or pouches. I find it too look unbalanced and sometimes a little weird when someone has shins and no thighs or the other way around. No thighs won't impact on whether your armor is approvable by the App Team, I just think it would look better with them.

Great work, all told! :D
Title: Re: Aposematic Mando WIP
Post by: DARKhoblin on Mar 03, 2020, 01:44 PM
Slade Kel,

Thanks for your insight! Yeah My partner has the same sort of eye for balance and I do agree that I am noticing the odd composition due to lacking of thighs. Thigh pouches are a fascinating idea.  Do you have any examples of that?

I'm laughing so much at everyone calling my cod a bikini,  I'll make sure to weather up my 'bikini' soon. Haha.  For the knee/shin situation, I really don't mind making new armor, I like my new design. But I may try to gently heat and ply them just so they're more comfortable in the meantime.

Oya!

I've done a quick half cape design, ideally in a linen or heavy cotton. Inspired by the beauty that is the Planet, Felucia.  :<3:

I'm finding any excuse to use gradient dying in prep for my Padme gown, (ONE DAY.) This design includes some organic Smocking, embroidery and beadwork. And maybe a Tassle at the mounting at the shoulder.
