Title: Carid Vhett's MKII
Post by: Carid Vhett on Mar 07, 2019, 04:10 AM
I've actually done a fair bit of work on this, but I figured a WIP should be put up.

This is an idea that has been in my head for some time. I wanted a heavy Mando with a large cannon, inspired by several kits on here. Because I no longer fit my vest I figured now was the time. On top of that a Mando wedding coming up shoved me into gear.

Step 1: Basic approval. This will meet the CRLs, timing is too close for anything more unfortunately.

Step 2: Add the additional armour I want and start towards the Brigades.

Step 3: Brigades approval.

Now for a photo dump.

I used my first set of armour as a template as the armour still fits me. Seriously the best is just too small. I then used masking tape to pattern the trauma plates.

I intentionally went with a lopsided design with the trauma plates as the idea is that I am slightly side on when wielding a large weapon so I would want extra protection on my leading side.

With the upper armour done and glued together, it was time to paint what I had. Dark steel and bronze.

Next was the shin. I forgot to take pictures by the looks of things until I had painted it.

Next up was to work on the shnee and start cutting the shoulders and thighs.

I also created a knee based on the clone GM style knees.

Then more painting.

Then it was time to cut the rest of the shoulder plates out, plus the gauntlets and for plate.

Then it got a heat treatment, though I have only shown all the shoulder plates.

That's the build so far. Gluing and painting this weekend. Next weekend the vest. I will be reusing my flightsuit (if it ain't broke).

I also want a ammopack. I'm using this

As inspiration.

And my inspiration for the weapon.

I also plan on a shield on my leading arm (Mando police inspired, but diamond shaped)

And a blast shield on the helmet like Mand'alor. Because if I want to be a tank, I will want extra protection.

Just a small text update. Go the velcro and elastic for the shoulders. Been too damp to paint, though I should have glued stuff together. I should be able to get stuff done after work though.

Need to go over the paint in places where it had not fully dried before I added the tape. Though it does look like weathering.

Plus the original paint job comes through and adds a nice layer of silver.

Also added kill stripes. Figured it was time.

Note. Dark grey, not green.

i gotta say im loving this new direction you are taking! i worked a few spots on my bucket that the masking tape had lifted off, into the weathering as it was easier and as it was random it looked  more authentic than anything i could do....
watching with great interest!

Now that I have glued the trauma layers together I'm going for something similar to Hi'kari with his layered shoulders.

Interesting concept with the layered shoulder effect :). One concern worth noting that jumped out at me is that some of the lines on your trauma plate edges are a little wobbly. I can see that you're going for some asymmetry in the trauma plate layout, which is totally cool, but final product you'll want to try to straighten out the wavy lines with some sanding. Definitely gonna look like a beefy boi, though, so should be a good fit for heavy assault/heavy weapons in the long run!

I got nervous when I started scrolling this. When it was unpainted, your chest trauma plates looked a lot like my armor (in my avatar). Ha!

It all came together and looks original. Good job. I'd weather it a little though. You'll find that wearing it, washing soft parts, it'll start looking like some parts age faster than others. A weathered kit makes it all match and feel real, lived in. Everything in Star Wars is dirty.

How much does that shoulder armor restrict movement?
Title: Re: Carid Vhett's MKII
Post by: Carid Vhett on Apr 16, 2019, 07:49 PM
Weathering is definitely happening before I app.

As for the shoulders, none. Each shoulders is attached to the other via elastic so it move with my arm. I also don't have the vest wings so I have more movement range.

Also trying to embrace the "Let the armour tell the story" So most the the weathering is directed from one side to the other getting less and less as you go across the body. Need to add some carbon scoring to it tomorrow and a brown wash or two to add some needed grime.

Thank you. Need to add some proper carbon scoring, though I don't know a good method. I want to avoid clear coating because I like the armour rubbing and chipping paint.

Also, pre app/app shots have been taken, just waiting on them to be emailed to me so I can post them here (only thing I am concerned about is chest placement may be off)

I've heard that using charcoal dust is a good way, but I have had zero experience in using it.
I used a flat black acrylic paint,  and dry brushed it in.

Looking good! For your carbon scoring I used crushed black pastels brushed on. Then matt clear coat over the top. Just a suggestion with your boots add some boot armor as it will help tie the boots and the rest of the kit together and make them look less earthie. Torso plates Need  a tweak to straitened  up. But overall looks so good I'm jealous!

Boot armour is one of the upgrades planned after approval. It's required for heavy assault and I am planning a dual brigade heavy weapons/heavy assault.

Very nice! The only thing that stands out to me other than what Josh mentioned is that your left thigh is overlapping your shknee, or very nearly so. Looks like it's sitting a little lower than the right thigh, so that's probably the issue.

Yeah, will get that sorted.

Also had someone say one of the shoulders look a bit flat and it could do with weathering. And the Cape could do with a bit more work.

Thanks. Needs some alterations before I can get OM. Shoulder needs adjustments as shoulder armour cannot be used as bicep armour. On a technicality it is shoulder armour much like Roman Centurions, but that's a debate for once I finish everything else.

Need to make sure my gaters are not flaring out as much, and I want to add boot and toe armour so I can combine that.

Armour spacing and the ab plate needs adjustments.

Weathering on the off shoulder and gaunts.

The armour won't be OM for the upcoming event, but I can still wear it. Then I can finish the first round of upgrades.

I haven't scrolled back far enough to see how armor is attached, but you could benefit from a more precise method. I have Velcro along long edges and snaps on corners. The pic with your helmet off, pressing against the chest plate moves it so much. That shouldn't happen.

The back edges of the collar are "floating" up too. If you had a backplate attached to collar, that would be held down, but with just a cape, the cape needs to attach to the collar, you you need to anchor that back edge to the vest. Floating, unsecured armor just looks sloppy and You'll be adjusting it all the time.

Armour was on hold during a trip, and while waiting on bought pieces from TMA. Received those and now it's assembly time.

Back plate might need some heat forming, gauntlets I am not going to add hinges, just going to glue the outside pieces.

Toppers will be hot glued on, but that is so I can add electronics later.

If anyone can link to awesome display led tutorials that a real noob can follow along feel free to link them or PM me.

Making stuff removable, you may want to drill holes and use screws/t-nuts instead of hot glue. Hot glue may deform parts of vac-form armor if you overdo it. It also may not have enough hold and you don't wanna lose parts while you're wearing something that doesn't allow you to bend over and pick it up (if you even notice it fall off).

Thanks for the tip.

I only want it removable the one time, until I have put the electronics in. Then I will secure it with something much stronger.

Great work, I'd advice to rise the lower plate a little to keed the spacing identical between plates 1-2 and 2-3 giving a more uniform look.

If you are talking about the gauntlet pieces. 2 and 3 are velcrod together so I can adjust that.

Thanks for the tip.

I believe he is talking about the abdominal plates spacing with the chest plates.
