Title: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Jennari on Aug 31, 2019, 11:31 PM
Finally in a spot where I'm okay starting my WIP. Here's everything that's done so far:

- Boots
- Shoulder bells
- Thigh armor
- Shin armor
- Jetpack
- Jetpack harness
- Flak vest
- Gloves
- Girth belt
- Poncho (unnecessary, I know)
- Westar-34s
- Back plate
- Cod piece
- Ammo belt
- Holsters
- Knee plates
- Boot plates
- Flight suit

Own, but still working on:

- Helmet
- Chest armor
- Gauntlets

I'm still waiting on this:

- Helmet skirt

Right on! Looks like you got your gauntlets from same guy as me on the dented helmet cruzer. Also, jet pack harness was easy to make if you need any pointers. I have some photo references I used to make mine. And if you need the aluminum pieces for the gauntlets let me know and I’ll tell you where I got mine.

Yes, they're Cruzer gaunts from a guy getting rid of his Jango. And thanks so much, ner vod, but I've got everything covered. Getting my harness and metal pieces from Seeker and Darkside on TDH. However, if you have any advice on the knees (not the knee darts), I'd really appreciate it.

On a small note, everything except the guns (which are agony) has been thoroughly sanded down, but I'll probably need to do more sanding with the other grits.

Where to get knees or how to assemble the ones from cruzer?
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Jennari on Oct 28, 2019, 10:32 AM
Neither. I'm making them from sintra.

Post by: Noevex Torust on Oct 28, 2019, 01:56 PM
Ah ok. Best thing to do there is get the patter file on the forum and make them that way. I would make them as accurate as possible. You want the front areas of the knees to be round and everything. If you look at my post under my build you can see closeup of how mine look when done.

Okay, vode, I need to know what- if anything- I have to do to get this vest right.

The flaps seem too big, though they're hand-sewn on, so taking them off and changing them shouldn't be too difficult.

Another vod told me the arm holes are too big.

And while I am a girl, I'm just adding the Jango pic to help with perspective and ideas. Need feedback on all this! Thanks.
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Mi'ix on Jan 14, 2020, 09:38 AM
I don't think the arm holes are too big.  Can you move your arms around in them comfortably without any tugging?

The flaps do look large on you.  Currently, they come down too far, and I'm concerned they would eclipse the double sleeve on your flightsuit.

Additionally, the neck opening on your vest looks to be a little wide and I might suggest lengthening the vest all together as it will need to tuck into your waist items, unlike Boba where there is a gap there.
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Jennari on Jan 14, 2020, 09:23 PM
Yes, I can move my arms comfortably.

I'm not sure about the length. My Ruus'alors always tell me that my torso plates and vest should stop just above my belly button, and that's where the vest stops. So...?

(And here's what it looks like with the flight suit)
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Mi'ix on Jan 15, 2020, 09:12 AM
Your Ruus'alore are correct, if you were doing a Boba, or standard custom Mandalorian.  Jango is different in that the vest tucks into the waist items and I'm concerned where your vest stops is too high so when you put everything all together we're going to see flightsuit, which is not correct for Jango.

Do you plan on lightening the color your flightsuit?  It looks rather dark at the moment.  The "blurple" can be a tough color to get right, but I think you would be on the right track
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Jennari on Jan 15, 2020, 11:36 AM
Gotcha. Waiting on the seller's feedback on fixing the vest.

It was made to my measurements, so why it's so off is beyond me.

And I don't know why the flight suit is so dark since Bobamaker is pretty reliable on accurateness. Still, I have no idea how to dye it. Never dyed anything before, let alone something this complicated.
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Mi'ix on Jan 15, 2020, 11:52 AM
Hmm. Might just be the lighting in the room then as far as the flightsuit is concerned.

Might benefit to take a picture outside in natural lighting.

Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Jennari on Jan 15, 2020, 12:24 PM
When I can, I will. And I'm gonna send the vest back to the seller so she can fix it, along with some armor templates so she can scale things right.
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Noevex Torust on Jan 18, 2020, 11:46 AM
On my jango, the flakvest clearly goes past my belly button to my belt which holds my cod plate. You cannot see the end of the vest at all due to my waist items covering the ends. If you zoom in you can see what I’m talking about on the front
(https://i.imgur.com/Ks6gCuL.jpg)
And your neck on the vest is way to big. It shouldnt be bigger then your collar plate.

If you're not going the cold cast route for Jango, I would suggest the Rub N' Buff route.
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Jennari on Jan 27, 2020, 10:55 AM
I figured. It's just hard to get it all buffed evenly and not in sections. You can see every little detail, and it's hard to correct.
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Noevex Torust on Jan 27, 2020, 10:37 PM
Looks great so far. You want to make sure you prime and sand your surfaces real well so itís as smooth as you can, then apply the Rub-n-buff. If it dosnt go on smooth you can just keep applying more to it. Here is a good video I went by. https://youtu.be/rItYKAEbt90 (https://youtu.be/rItYKAEbt90)

Post by: Jennari on May 04, 2020, 09:22 PM
Not much, but I've made some progress.

Helmet's had a layer of Bondo applied over the fiberglass, so now it's even stronger, and soon, it'll be nice and smooth inside.

3D-printed Westars are all sanded and filled in, so ready for primer, then I send 'em to my vod OriKad for work.

All the armor pieces sans the chest, collar, ab, back, and cod are sanded smooth and just need a bit more filler and primer and then they'll be ready for rub'n buff.
Gauntlets need a lot of attention, but are close behind. Jet pack and all its parts have been sanded down thoroughly, and are ready to be shipped to OriKad as well. Girth belt is pretty much done, just need to work on the ends. And I've ordered my cod and back plate.

So, yay for any progress, really.

More (minor) progress!

Got the kneecap areas put together, the back plate fully shaped, and both it and the cod have been primer'd.

Also finally sent my jet pack and guns away to my friend, so now I just wait for him to work his magic on them.

Also, my dad and I did a very ROUGH suit up with the vest and torso plates to get an assessment of them. Any feedback (that isn't about the positioning of the plates) is helpful. Thanks!

Looks like you're rolling right along, but some things have caught my eye.

Is that a place holder diamond, or have you not made the rectangle cutout around the middle?

Jango's back plate had the U shape cutout in the bottom of it, like Boba's back plate.  Do you plan on adding the cuttout?

The knee shape is looking OK, but there should be a return edge on top.

Are you also working on the side section of the knee with the darts and "upside down F"?

I haven't seen the cod plate on you just yet, so I'm concerned about size, but there should be a loop attached to the cod plate for your westar holsters.

Post by: Jennari on Jun 03, 2020, 06:10 PM
Yes, Mi'ix, I'm aware of all that you've pointed out. The simple fact is that I have yet to get to those parts. But I DO have the other pieces and parts for the knees, I will be making the cutout and trimming the back plate, I still need to cut the rectangle on the diamond (since I lost my original), and the cod is the right size, plus, I have the loop piece. Nothing to worry about. Not yet, anyway.

The gist is that I bought the backplate, and it doesn't come with the cutout. I bought the cod from the same seller, and I gave him my measurements for both plates, so they fit me. I also ordered another diamond with the rectangle cutout BUT I won't know if it's the right size till I get it. I got the loop piece from our very own Noevex. And I cut out all the parts for the knees based on the online templates, I just haven't attached them all because it'll be easier to sand and smooth them when they're not all one piece.

Minor progress worth sharing:

Rub'n Buff!

Finished priming the back plate, so it was finally time to try rub'n buffing. Two friends who are experts at it, and one of which is an approved Jango, said it looks great, but we'll see...

Yes everything looks awesome! Love the progress. You are planning on putting your harness under your flak vest correct?  And will you be able to use that piece for the cod plate I made for you?
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP
Post by: Jennari on Sep 09, 2020, 10:14 PM
Yes. As I said, that suit up was preliminary; just testing the back plate and jetpack, really. It was simply easier to put the harness on over the vest.

And yes, I'll be using that piece. If you look, you can see the beginnings of the screw holes for where it will go. We simply forgot about that piece in the hustle and bustle of everything.

Thanks, ner vod! Glad to get feedback from another Jango.  :jango:

Finally, some real progress!

If no one has anything to say about them, I think I can safely call these done.

The girth belt needs a new loop since the other one didn't fit, but that's an easy fix. And heads up, it has a bit of give to tuck the cod under; other than that, it fits perfectly.

Visor/mandible area on the helmet is pretty much good to go. Gonna fix the seam and add another coat of rub'n buff, and I need to get the cheeks down to a matte texture.

Added the screws to the exhaust port, though a little bit of the surface cracked. Just gonna add some bondo and paint, and the jetpack should, at long last, be done.

Shape of the knees looks pretty good, but I'm seeing some pitting at the tops and sides of the knee that needs to be filled and smoothed.

The rub n' buff looks like it took very nicely to the helmet, but I'm seeing some cracks along the seam line of the dome that will need to be repaired.

Colors look pretty good too, but the tape lines along the cheeks need some attention as it looks like there was some tape pull.

Not much in the way of progress, and bad quality photos, I know, but I figure it's still worth showing. Finally finished the knees. Now I just need to know if these will pass muster, or if I should buy a set and use these for a different kit. If they're okay, then on to weathering. Unfortunately, not much to show, but at least I've finally got the chest plates shaped. We decided not to do anything else to them now in case they need adjustments.

So, just to list what still needs to be done:

- Boot and chest plates need to be sanded, primed, and rub'n'buffed
- Waiting on my new helmet
- ALL the armor needs to be weathered and attached to the soft parts
- Flight suit needs a bit of color adjustment and button holes added to the legs
- Flak vest needs slits for jetpack straps to feed through, as well as fixed shoulder flaps
- Boots need snaps and weathering
- Knee armor needs the darts secured in place
- Gauntlets need to be hinged and have greeblies and weapons added
- Jetpack needs vent re-attached

All in all, I'm feeling a lot better about getting this done in time. Not as much left to do or worry about as I thought.

So the only plates that still need some serious TLC are the chest plates. Everything else is ready for weathering.

And have the snaps on my boots and plates. (Yes, the plates might need to be secured more so none of the gray area shows)

Helmet's been sanded and primed.

Button holes have been added to the flight suit.

All that's left to do:

- (Possibly) re-shape the chest armor; then sanding, priming, and rub'n'buffing
- Weather everything
- Add greeblies and gauntlet extensions where needed
- Paint/Rub'n'buff the helmet
- Attach the armor to the soft parts
- Make a few minor repairs

Getting closer!!!

(Mi'ix, if you could please PM me, I'd appreciate it; I know you're busy, I just need an answer or two) (Sorry to disturb you; and thank you)

And now I've got all the leg plates strapped on. (Excuse the lack of my right shin plate; it needed some repairs) Might need some adjustment and more snaps to make sure they sit correctly, but otherwise good.

Hey Jennari

First off, I'm impressed with your attention to  detail leaving the gauntlet hinges brass. A lot of people overlook that. Your Flightsuit came out the perfect color. Again, not easy. Just a few points.

Biggest being your thigh plates look purportionately small on you compared to the seemingly larger purportionate ones on Jango. The ankles of your pants seem to also flare out way past the shin plates. A little is fine but that is quite a bit.

The Flightsuit pants of the original costume are weird compared to the rest because everything else is looser while the ankles and thighs are more snug.

I'm going to be following along and providing insight when and where I can!

Thanks, Joey. And I don't deserve credit for the gauntlet hinges. It's a Cruzer kit.

The problem is that the thighs were originally deemed too large, so they were trimmed down. But making another set is cake compared to the other plates. If you could just help me figure out how much bigger they need to be, I'd appreciate it.

I don't know why the pant legs are flaring out. This is a Bobamaker flight suit made to my measurements, and I've actually gained weight since purchasing it. I'm not good at sewing, but any tips on fixing them are appreciated.

And is everything else good?

Long and short: the thighs need to be wider and longer and cover more area. I placed your photo next to the screen used costume for comparison

Unfortunately, sewing is far from my specialty either but what I do know what can help is to dart the ankles. You may need to see a local alterations studio or a seamstress to assist you, but let's get it wearable first before making a final determination.

I do have to agree with Jaster on this.

Perhaps it looks a little odd because you're not wearing your holsters or cod plate, but we need more in terms of coverage.

More curve on the thigh plates, too.  The edges are floating.  The screen-used thighs also seem to be made of thinner material.  Your knees also seem a little on the small side.  Joey's side-by-side image is very helpful in seeing what needs some adjusting. :)

I'll walk you through how to shape the curves in video sometime later if I remember.  I was planning on getting your helmet almost ready for paint today.  :jango:

I can remake the thighs.  And they're only floating because there's not attachment up there. Also, this sintra is about as thin as you can get without it being too thin.

I DON'T have time to make new knees!!! Those were made from scratch, and it was a painstaking effort. I only know one person who makes screen-accurate Jango knees, and he charges $143 for them. Plus, I don't know if he makes them in more than one size.

I wouldn't worry too much about the knees Jennari. They're not egregiously small like the thigh plates.
Title: Re: Jango Fett (Geonosis) WIP

Knees are probably okay enough, but like I said on messenger, I'll look into whipping up a better set as soon as I have time.

To get the right thigh size, put the flightsuit on with knees and codpiece attached.  Measure two fingers up from the top of the knee plate and make a chalk mark on the flightsuit (because chalk washes out easily).  Make another chalk mark level with the bottom of the codpiece.  Measure two fingers up from the higher chalk mark and make a third mark there.  Then take off the flightsuit and measure the distance (with a ruler or measuring tape) between the two farthest chalk marks.  That will be the correct length of your thigh plates.  Scale your cutting pattern to that.

Remember that thighs have to curve on both the X and Y axis to conform to the shape of your leg.

FINALLY rub'n'buffed the chest plates, with the exception of the left one since it needs more work.

Closer and closer to the end!

All the armor, sans the helmet, is weathered.

ALMOST all the greeblies and parts are secured on the gauntlets. Also still need to paint the rocket.

And the knee darts are attached.

All that's left is to weather my helmet once I get it, and attach the remaining plates to the soft parts.

Good orientation on the darts, nice observation with the larger one on top.

I know you haven't gotten into painting the gauntlet laser/rocket, but the nose should be copper instead of brass.  Might be the lighting though.

Who did the paint work?

The black stripes around the dome should be closer together.

Can I see how they sit in relation to the turn signals on the front of the helmet?

Ori'kad did the paint work, and still has the helmet. He took the pics.

In a discussion last night while I was at work, we determined that the stripes are correctly placed relative to the turn signals, BUT the turn signals were about 4-5mm too high.  After I got home from work I did a bit of sanding, bondoing, and cutting to get the turn signals in the right place.  Now that I'm awake again, I can finish the bondo work. touch up the rub n buff, and replace the stripes.  Good thing I used car pin-striping tape instead of paint.

See, now, that's my usual problem.  I forget to take pictures. :)

I do have this one though:

Yes, it has already been noted that the stripes are on the thick side.  As they're automotive pinstriping tape (4mm width), trimming them will be easy and take maybe 20 minutes with an xacto knife without significant impact on the rub n buff or primer underneath. 1-2mm off the top and bottom.  Just have to make the cut really gently.  Preferably, before the weathering.

It's getting shipped out in a couple hours, once my morning coffee fully kicks in.
