Title: Kolís Protector - WIP
Post by: Kol Hokan on Sep 22, 2019, 01:11 AM
The stakes were high, the crowd was assembled. It was brother versus brother. Protector vs. Death Watch. Gurreck Clan vs. Concordia Clan.  We walked 10 paces... we turned... we fired.

And I lost.

As the agreed upon terms stated I now have to build an MMCC approvable Mandalorian Protector.  This is incredibly fitting, and I'm actually not upset by my loss at all, as I was the one to write up the Mandalorian Protector BRL's back when I was the canon/legends Brigade Marshal. I know the costume in and out, and the Protectors are actually one of my favorites in Star Wars Legends.  So here we go!

I sketched out my initial Mandalorian Protector design about a year and a half ago.  There are some elements I will probably drop, like the extra kill stripes on the collar and ab (not sure if the current Brigade Team would allow those), and the Solo-styled belt.  I am mostly aiming to build my Protector more similar to Jodo Kast than with Boba.  Yellow for the visor frame rather than red, sidearm with holster, and probably the addition of a Kama.

Somewhat unbeknownst to my rival, Jaster Fett, I actually began collecting the parts for a Mandalorian Protector costume several years ago.  It's been a slow acquisition of parts and pieces, but I'm nearly done.  I figure I can reuse quite a few parts from other kits that I've built, most notably my flightsuit that I wear on both my Boba and my Mando Medic.  I have protector boots I wear on both my Medic and my Death Watch, so that will be fine, and I can use my Boba spats that match the flightsuit.

I picked up a generic Fett style helmet from Head Shot Props before they were sold off to new owners several years ago and have been sitting on it, waiting for my Protector build to start up.  A full day with the dremmel, some bondo, and sandpaper and this baby will be ready for primer and paint.  Super easy.  This will be my 10th helmet I've worked on.

I also have two jetpacks that I am not currently using, and could easily repaint either of them.  The Z-6 (red and white) is a scratch built sintra pack. The JT-12 (grey and black) is fiberglass and is already set up to work with my Boba harness.  I would prefer to use the Z-6, but it needs a lot of love, as several parts have broken off.

Rather than the large belt pouches I have the Jodo Kast belt greeblies that are 3D printed that I may add.  Picture was taken with the Jaing Eye cutouts that I used on my Death Watch that I intend to also put on my Protector.  Additionally I have some army surplus pouches I feel I can include.  I will likely cut off the vertical straps to make them look more like Boba's.  And lastly I have the scratch made girth belt I made for my Death Watch.  The brown might not look too great with all the other tan and brown I have going on though, so I may swap it out with my red ROTJ Boba girth belt.

I picked up some basic Boba styled knees a year back or so.  They need some work, but should be a fine base to go off of.

One of my local friends in the 501st has a vactable and can vacform some Boba plates for me easily.  I've got plenty of sintra laying around the garage, but I think vac-formed plates would give the kit more definition.  I haven't decided if I'm going to do shins or shin tools.  I'll probably end up making a pair of Jango style shins, as they are easy and will give the kit more balance in terms of plate layout.  I already have a set of Protector shoulders made, that I used for my Brigade-approved light melee specialist, but with all the drama associated with the banning of the Protector sigil on custom costumes, I haven't worn them in ages and have all but retired that kit.  My gauntlets from my original Kol kit are original RKDs and I think I can repaint them the same yellow as the shoulders and make them work.  I have a backup if Vraeden or Mi'ix find that they deviate from the BRL's too much, however. Please let me know.

I'm thinking I may incorporate this alternative mythosaur symbol I found on a random shoulder in SWTOR.  It has the classic Boba look to it but isn't recognizable.

For the cape and/or kama and/or leg wraps, I have a bunch of tan fabric that I used for my sister's Rey costume.  I have other options as well, but this is what I have the most of on hand, and it's easily weather-able.

For trophies thus far I have my Wookiee scalps from Boba that I can use if I wanted to, but I also have some Padawan Braids and lightsaber trophies from my original Kol kit.  A couple of the sabers need some touch-up, but they still look pretty good.  Fun fact: the black and gold saber was my ex's.

And lastly, weapons.  My primary weapon I am planning to use a Shoretrooper's E-22 that I got for a trade recently.  This is by far my favorite weapon in my collection, and actually prompted me to just go ahead and sell my Verpine Shatter Rifle.  I'll be adding a strap to it and probably sanding it down some more to get rid of any print lines that are still peaking through.

For the side arm I have two Nerf-brand Q'ira blasters from Solo, that I can work on.  One of my clanmates modified one of those last year, and it turned out phenominal.  It looks to be a perfect small sidearm for a Protector. I also have a small collection of classic-era blasters that I may incorporate at some point, but right now I'm drifting toward just modding up the Q'ira blaster.

And that's what I have so far.  I'm looking forward to working on this kit.  The helmet will be my priority, once that is done, I should be able to bang out the rest pretty quickly.  Please stay tuned and keep up the encouragement, I'll need it to stay focused and not get sidetracked on a different build (of which I have several in the works).  And lastly, let me just say that Jaster Fett sucks Kowakian Monkey Lizards.  :P

How many people get to say they have a life size trophy?  ;) ;D LOL!

That duel was WAY more fun than it should be. I hope we started a new trend! I love how you're going for more Jodo Kast inspired. You've got a lot of good pieces here I'm anxious to see come together! Will be following this thread with greater than great interests

Thanks for the encouragement guys!  And I'm hoping to use your bandoleer tutorial, Fenn, to build a belt and possibly an optional bandoleer as well (though I know that wouldn't fit within the BRLs).

I just got back home from picking up some vac-formed plates from a local friend in the 501st.  They look perfect!  He threw in some shoulders as well. Even though I have a set made, I'm thinking I'll paint these up green as an optional alternative.

Hoping to get started on the helmet tomorrow while the weather here in Portland is cooperating.

I do really like vacuum formed plates just for micro-uniformity. I was VERY fortunate my MP plates came out the way they did for hand molded sintra, but still. Vacuum form always feels like an extra step in looking better

Made progress on the helmet today. Trimmed all the excess resin off the bottom, smoothed the lip, cut out the T-visor, drilled and filed the keyslots, and then filed and sanded everything down. Lastly I prepped and glued the left earcap and the lower right earcap in place.

Oh, and because Iím just insane, and Iíve got the itch, I decided to go ahead and prep a second helmet in tandem. Iím thinking of painting it up as a weathered super trooper - all white. Itís just the helmet for now, but I could easily cut out some extra plates and use most of the soft parts from the Protector to make an alternate kit.

Wasn't able to get much done this past weekend due to a pretty full schedule, but I did start planning out my paint layers for the helmet.
It's going to be the most masking I've done on a helmet thus far.

I'm planning on adding a small amount of physical damage with the dremmel and then utilize a combination of liquid latex (like my other helmets) and the hairspray & rock salt method for the rest of the damage. A very small amount of topical damage will be added similar to ROTJ Boba's few scratches and paint smears.

I'm going to try not to over-do the damage, and keep it in line with ROTJ Boba's amount. The one unique damaged part that I really want to do is a "crack" in the back panel that has a metal plate that has been riveted into place to keep the integrity of the helmet. I want it to look like this part of the helmet was nearly destroyed and that Kol didn't have the time nor patience to properly repair it.  The plate will still be weathered, but not painted.  I've had this concept for a long while, but haven't posted it anywhere until now.

Question for the Brigade Team:
Are killstripes relegated to the dome, or can they appear elsewhere on the helmet? How about elsewhere on the armor, such as ab plate or gauntlets?

Here are some of the other helmets I've done with a similar weathering style.

I'd like to maintain the classic look and have the killstripes remain on the helmet.

Feel free to move them around the helmet, though!

Not much progress during winter unfortunately. But I ended up picking up a pair of Kruser's 1313 gauntlets in a trade with a clanmate.  They need a bit of work, but should be perfect for the Protector.

Was hoping to get more done over summer, but while I was quarantined I ended up working on a side Mando project. I did use some methods and paint colors as a prelude to the protector. Want to get the yellow just right. And I think I nailed. It. This helmet is for a different kit but the T should look nearly the same. Iíve been half tempted to just use this helmet as the protector helmet with a repainted green dome and white cheeks.

But I wanted more physical damage on the protector like in my sketch. So I worked on the mirror version of this helmet as well itís now sitting with primer on it.

I also designed a poncho for my protector or when Iím not wearing the jetpack. Iím not very adept at sewing, but I think thatíll just give it even more of a rusted look. Iíve had the fabric sitting in the basement for a few years. I misread the label when I bought it, and it ended up being about 5 times more expensive than I had thought. Oh well, the texture looks awesome.

Got a couple days of uninterrupted work time in the sun this past weekend and made some major progress.

Added some physical weathering to the Jantech vacformmed plates. I also cut slots for the electronic reader.  I will be using an electronic name badge like I did with my Death Watch kit.

Cut a rectangle in the vacformed diamond and backed it.

Applied primer followed by the silver base. 3 or so coats of Rustoleum aluminum.

After applying liquid latex over the physical damage and in a few additional areas I applied the gloss dark grey as the first layer on all the primary plates. 2 layers
(https://i.ibb.co/9TGwVqt/2475-E99-C-BEBD-42-E4-8-FF2-80-F17377-B69-E.jpg)

Added more liquid latex so that the dark grey would show around some edges of the silver.  Decided to go with an orange layer immediately after the grey, without masking any extra. Very little orange will show.

Then finally the green.

prior to removing the liquid latex. You can see bubbled up in all the areas.

Finally, here are the plates with just a couple spots of orange peaking through.  I brushed it very very lightly with 0000 steel wool to get rid of the gloss.

I'm holding off on the yellow for the shoulders until the helmet and gauntlets are ready for yellow - as I want to do it all at the same time to ensure the color blending of the yellow/tan/bronze/orange will be consistent.  I will be applying my signature scorching  method over all of this.

So I've hit a bit of a wall... I had been waiting on a custom vest from a clanmate before continuing much further, as I wanted to make sure sizing and everything was all set. Unfortunately my clanmate will be unable to make the flak vest for me afterall.

Does anyone have a reasonably-priced vest recommendation I could go with for my Protector? My sewing skills are simply not up to par. I'd prefer to keep it under $100 USD if possible.

Sorry to hear that, a good vest is always hard to find, Mi'ix beat me to it, Aria and Arkady, are the 2 I was going to recommend as well, I may have another option for you if they don't work out for you just let me know.

Good news everyone! *insert futurama gif here* I was able to work out a trade with a clanmate (Venix) and secured a vest for the Protector.

It fits almost perfectly. I need to modify the Velcro on the neck seal and maybe extend out the tabs on the sides to give me more breathing room.

The black tabs on the side were an interesting choice by the original owner before Venix acquired it, would this still work for the Protector BRLís? I could try to lighten them using a bleach solution to make them more grey. Thoughts?

if you can somehow get them to match the rest of vest, maybe replace them?

Ah, I see the BRLs were changed minutes after I posted to state the vest has to be a solid color. I don't disagree, but dang, that's frustrating.  So I can't try to use a dye remover and tone down the black to a light gray anymore? It has to be the exact shade?  I don't have any extra of the material used for the vest (as I bought it third hand) and both of my local Jo-Ann's have recently closed, so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to color match and get such small replacement pieces now (online orders are a minimum of 2 yards).

It's just not something we see on Protectors, or really anything of Fett persuasion.

I understand, and again, I don't necessarily disagree. It's just frustrating for the BRL to be altered to block my then-BRL-compliant vest solution 20 minutes after I suggest it.  I had no intention of keeping the black, I just wanted to tone it down to a light grey to make it less noticeable - it's already obscured under the arms anyway.  I'm open to suggestions on how to solve this, or if any other Protectors out there happen to have a couple scraps of fabric you think would color match I'll happily take them off your hands.

If you have a problem with something, send me a PM.

Otherwise you'll have to swap out the black. I'm really not seeing a way to shift the color of the black enough to make it pass at the BRL Level without swapping out the sides.

I agree with this, Swapping out the sides would be the route I would go,

Depends on what color you want the vest! If you soak the vest in a bleach and water solution - the black will tend to turn to a light tan (generally, then you might be able to just dye the white parts to match.) Or! after you bleach it, you could just fabric paint the whole thing to minimize the need to replace the sides with some sewing.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions Fenn! Going to look into Rit dye remover and see how muted I can get the black first.  Coloring the whole vest to a light grey might be a good option - as I'm not committed to keep the vest tan. Good thought!

Made some progress on the helmet today.

Had a major mishap while drilling the holes for the earcap magnets. Ended up shattering part of the earcap base. I think it may have been a flaw or bubble in the resin. But with some careful bondo application to fill the hole, I was able to set the magnets and get the rangefinder installed.

A bit more progress today. The helmet is back to all silver again after the RF was installed and the dome and rough spots all being smoothed. Itís ready for masking and the base layer coats.

I also did a bit of work on the Kruser 1313 gauntlets. Just need to drill the vent holes in the cylinders, build the lower halves, and attach the parts and hinges.

I also sanded down some old shins I made in like 2014, and painted them up with a layer of dark grey and then green. These will be optional pieces. Lastly I finished the gray and green layers for the alternate shoulders. Iíll have one set of green and one set of yellow - as I really canít decide which route to go with.

It was my birthday, so what better way to celebrate than to work on the Protector? Continued working on the helmet over the weekend at an armor party between helping recruits. Then was able to give it some real focus Monday and Tuesday. Itís still pretty shiny, I canít wait to get some proper weathering on this helmet!

I decided I didnít care how flat the green was looking on all the plates, so I decided to mask off all the damage and shoot it again with three shades of green to give the plates more depth. The goal is to make it look like the lighter parts are sun faded or more worn down once the additional weathering and washes are added. The sigil on the chest plate is my personal house crest that I designed a couple years ago. I also repainted an old modified TK backplate of mine as a /temporary/ backplate. Iíll be switching to a more traditional one for final app, but this will be a stand in until I can figure out my jetpack/backplate situation.

The sigil is my custom house crest for House Hokan. As this will be my 9th Mando build and my 6th (hopefully) merc approved kit, I figured I needed someone to unify all my costumes together. Ive considered adding something in the blank section, but Iím not sure what yet. Perhaps a very simplified version of my clan (Concordia) logo.

Nice progress, I noticed the nod to Boba there with the 3 holes ;)
Yes! Good eye. Iíve always considered the 3 holes to be either taser probes or kamino saber darts. Some sort of stun weapon. Iíve included them on several of my kits now. For this one, thereís one on the chest plate and one on the back of helmet.

No progress today, But Iím adding more damage to the plates soon using some of the tricks I picked up while finishing my pre-beskar Din Djarin build last month. All together it should be pretty heavily weathered.

Dang dude!!  :o :o :o

That's a lot of kits haha

It's a really cool custom sigil - my only two cents would be to use some concept Boba Fett art and snag a symbol from there to add into that space.

Or even use the little red tear drop/ 7 with the stripe through it like Boba's.

Since we're Protectors, I think throwing in subtle nods to Boba (like your 3 dents in the chest plate) into the kit is the way to go. I have soooooooo many different symbols on my kit from the Boba concept art haha - mostly on my knees and jetpack. I have the bird skull embossed and painted onto my holster. I added all the ear cap symbols and even did 1 black, 1 orange forehead triangle.

All the references!!!!

Iíll look over more of the McQuarrie concept art and see what I can add in there. If nothing else, perhaps my brigade number, if thatís kosher?

A bit more work done today. I added more bits of weathering here and there. Some silver scraping, a bit of black on the chipping, and a few smudges of tan and black. There will be more heavy black and brown wash on the final step.

Got some silver on the knees. Still need to figure out some darts on the sides, but I got overly ambitious. This ended up biting me in the shebse as a big gust of wind knocked over the knees literally 10 seconds after I applied the first coat of silver paint. So one knee has a ton of grass prints on it. WhichÖ actually doesnít look terrible. Iím going to keep it for now and paint over it and see what happens.

Lastly I added the orange kill stripes. I havenít stripped the liquid latex off yet, so they still look very clean and crisp. Rest assured, they will be weathered to perfection. I decided to throw some orange on the right shin as well and absolutely love how it turned out. It should help tie the kit all together.

I think the way the sigil looks now is perfect, less is more in this case and its fits in well with the aesthetics of a protector.
I would grime up that lower white cheek a bit, it's looking clean compared to the rest of the helmet, nice work so far. keep the updates coming.

As mentioned, everything will be getting the black scorching followed by both a black and brown wash. So those white cheeks wonít be white for long!

Managed to pull the liquid latex off after a D&D session tonight. Iím flying out to Spain in a day, so I likely wonít get the weathering finished this week. Should be back to it all in two to three weeks time!

Yes, I'll be adding some topical weathering to the clan logo on the shoulder bell.  It ended up being bigger than expected.  Not sure why I'm surprised - I knew what I was doing when I masked it all off. Anyways, it should match up relatively nicely to the black and white Protector logo on the alternate shoulder post-approval. That said, I'll likely be using the yellow shoulders instead of the green ones. The green shoulders were more like testing plates than anything else, I think the yellow will balance the kit better.  We'll see.

Flying out to Spain for a few weeks tomorrow morning. So no picture updates for now.  I'll be back to the grind late July.  The plan is to get the kit completed (and hopefully approved) before our big local con in September.  Which, at this rate, I should meet with minimal issues.

I have been wondering this for awhile now - why do so many of our Protectors pain the sigil as white and black? The comics show it as white and red. Random thoughts! lol

Enjoy your trip dude. Looking forward to seeing more progress upon your return.

Back from Spain and back on the build. Took some 3D printed death watch knees and modified them to be a bit more Boba/Jango looking. Used printer cartridge caps and drilled holes in them to set the connectors Iím using as knee dart launchers.

The 90-100 degree heat here in Portland made the paint dry super quick, so I was able to do silver, masking, gray, and yellow all in one afternoon. Just need to add some brushed on extra damage and do the black and brown washes.

Spain was incredible, thanks for asking. It still doesn't entirely seem real that I was over there swimming in the Mediterranean and visiting sights I've only ever read about in history books.

But I'm getting side-tracked. Hopefully the pictures are working for everyone. The IMGBB hosting site I use seems to be very intermittent in their image displays. Sometimes I log in and the pictures are missing, other times they are there.

I have made a TON of progress in the past couple months since returning from Spain.  To the point where the kit is not only wearable, but I have submitted it under basic app as advised by my Ruus'alor.  Unfortunately I was unable to update my app for a bit due to my laptop being down. New laptop has been acquired and I'll do my best to show the progress I made to this point.

Last we left off I had put down the initial paint layers for the helmet.  After Spain I got back to work. I stenciled out the Jaing Eyes and added kill stirpes to the helmet as well as some small details on the earcaps:

The gauntlets ended up falling way behind. The Kruser gauntlets I originally intended to use ended up having quite a bit of damage to them (they appear to be B-pulls) and needed a lot more work than I wanted to do with a debut con coming up in a couple weeks. So I sanded down my old RKD Kol gauntlets from 2014 and started on a fresh repaint. I was inspired by the pre-pro Fett and Kelan Ord's protector for the mis-matched gauntlets. I originally had no intention of using orange, but after seeing it on the helmet, I knew I had to add it to more places on the kit:

I mentioned I didn't stop with the blackwash. No. I needed to add more grime and rust effects.  So that happened:

With a fresh visor installed, trimming off the bridge I had left to keep the helmet shape sturdy, and some basic padding, the helmet was done!

But because I'm crazy and I do my best work under a time crunch when pressure is applied, I decided that I needed a Poncho.  I'd never made a poncho before that wasn't just a square piece of fabric with a hole, but I was inspired by Stephen Walker's work at Rebel Base Creations.  In fact I've never sewn anything custom before - the most I'd ever done was hemming some pants.  I used some curtain fabric I had found at Goodwill and some leather-looking vinyl I had picked up a while back. Combined it with scrap from a crappy Din Djarin belt from a cheap costume and my wife's Fennec Shand chest box, and it turned out pretty dang good!  Oh, and I broke two of my machine needles sewing through that vinyl. Ouch:

I was ready to debut the costume at Rose City Comic Con! The same event that I had lost the duel at exactly 3 years previous (see post 1)!

I even had a couple professional shots taken at the con that turned out perfect.

The following week my clan had an armor party.  I kitted up, and took my app photos.  They have already been submitted per my Ruus'alor's advisement, and I'm currently in the waiting stage for basic approval.  My eye picks up two very minor things. First the spacing between the collar and the chest plates appear to be too close from the front view - in actuality they are a full thumb's width apart consistently all the way across. It's just the angle of the front shot. I supplied an additional photo showing the spacing.  Secondly one of my knees appears to be slightly lower than the other.  It's not. This is due to my posture. I broke my foot earlier in the year and still have some lingering issues, not too bad, but I do tend to shift my weight unevenly to favor my better foot when standing still. The fabric weathering doesn't show too great on the app photos, but the close up shot shows that the flightsuit is sufficiently weathered. App photos:

Overall I'm very happy with the results and look forward to approval. It still needs a bit of work for Brigade approval. I need to finish the jetpack and swap out backplates.  Going to add some hip pouches and change out blasters to a canon/legends blaster. But it is VERY close!
