Title: Approved- Uur Shaadlan -Still a WIP- Approved: Medic and Assassin Brigades
Post by: Vercopaanir on Jan 16, 2020, 05:46 PM
Hey All,
Starting on my armor build.  I am doing a cardboard mock-up to get a rough spacing and sizing before I move to the PVC Board.  Not sure about the sizing of the plates.
Starting with my concept drawings. Those are still in flux as I try different things to find not only what I like but also what would be approved.

Spacing looks pretty good to me! My only concern is how wide the neck cut out is, I think if you made the sides thicker (to bring it closer to your neck) then that would help! I hope that makes sense? Lol

Thanks so much for the input.  I brought the sides of the neck in about 1cm.

I'm back at it with the cardboard modeling.   Did some work on my ideas for the shoulders.  I want some raised sections for depth contrast and for color placement.

I also did some work on my shins/knees...not sure I like how they hit my knees when I walk. I may end up with shins and knees as separate pieces.  I also got my PVC board.  Motivation to finish my cardboard designs engaged.

Hey all is an armored skirt acceptable?

I am thinking about something like this.  The 'skirt' would attack to my sash.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Also update:

I got all the pieces sanded and I cut out my hand plates.

I am starting to think about what my paint job is going to look like.  I am currently leaning toward this one for the chest plate.

And finally a question...can I have a segmented back plate or do I just need to do either a solid one or spaced plates?
Title: Re: WIP First Armor Kit

You can have segmented, a solid piece, or pieces that are separated (just make sure the spacing is the same as your front plates). Totally up to you!

Update:

I started my adventures into heat forming my pieces.  Shoulders, collar and hand plates all went well...then I reached the chest piece...going to have to try again with that one.

Thanks, I may end up having my sister help me.

I got some work done over the weekend on my war skirt...armored kama and soft cod  :D

The armor pieces still need sanding and a bit of heat forming.

I haven't decided on attchment either.  Since this will take a bit of abuse, sitting down etc..., I would like to make the pieces 'replaceable'.  I was originally thinking magnets, I am just afraid that I might lose one that way as well.  Looking for suggestions about do's and don'ts here.  What works for you guys and what hasn't?

Well, humbly IMO, you have several options to consider: industrial velcro, magnets, snaps, etc. Althgough I don't have a armored kama, I do use snaps and industrial velcro and didn't ever had any prob in 3y... so far  :P

Have a nice day, regards,

The armored loin cloth and kama is looking really neat! (I should have been more clear earlier to just make sure that they remain separate pieces, not an actual skirt)

Thanks AJ!  I am doing well thanks for asking.
I am thinking that I might do a combo of Velcro and chicago screws  just to see which one I like better.  I am not sold on the whole snaps idea as I've messed with snaps before with success but not with pleasure (aka I hated adding them to anything).

And no worries Kryamla Redalur I understood what you meant by armored karma and loin cloth as being two separate items.  I also really appreciate your prompt feed back on my WIP.

Happy weathering!  I love this part of it... your creating back story here.  One thing I thought about while weathering... random... random... random.... and embrace your mistakes and make them damage.  Not all your damage will be the same size and form 45 degree angles.  Looking forward to your weathering posts!

Thanks Awall you gave me something to think about....what is my story?  Just discovered the writers bloc...completely enthralled with the tales of Mando awesomeness.

Update:
SO I finally worked up the courage to try again with the chest piece...couldn't bribe any one to help me but I am much more pleased with the results this time.

Please ignore the popping off collar the tape came loose as I was taking the photos and my photographer had already left before I looked at them so I couldn't take more by myself.  Just asking for a check on the fit of the chest piece and the ab plate.. I think I may need to slim down the top part of the chest plate ...its a little big when I put my arms up and forward.

So input on fit and sizing would be great at this point.  I want it formed and sized properly before I even put on one layer of paint.

Speaking of paint, I have begun experimenting on some scraps that I had left over from cutting out my kama plates.

Testing the two different attachment possibilities I decided I would try...leaning toward velcro at this point.

I also did some heat forming on my kama and soft cod plates...when the weather cooperates I start painting them with primer.

Thanks Slade Kel for the encouragement.

The weather was so nice when I got home today that I just had to get at least one layer of paint in.  So...first layer of primer and sanding done!

I made sure to take a bunch of pictures at this stage cuz this is where I learn the natural high points of my armor that I will use to help direct some of my weathering.

I also did a little more experimenting with weathering and colors on my scrap bits...thinking I like the effect so far.

Title: Re: WIP First Armor Kit
Post by: Slade Kel on Feb 28, 2020, 10:14 PM
You're certainly not wasting any time! Bondo is a lot easier than it might seem at first. The best advice I can give is make small amounts at a time (it hardens quick, especially if you accidentally overdo it with the hardening cream) and put thin layers at a time. There's nothing worse than putting too much on and spending hours sanding.

You can always use bondo spot putty! Itís pre-mixed and comes in a tube! Itís available at most automotive stores :)

Thanks for the tip...I don't mind sanding but truly not a fan of spending hours at it.   We got a break in the rain...weatherman says only two days of sun so I figure get it done while the getting is good and before the humidity starts messing with the paint.

Definitely something I'll look into.  Might be easier for smaller fill job like this to have a bit premixed in a tube.

Update:
I got the second layer of silver base color on today and will probably try to squeeze in the clear coat...pictures to come.

I also  added the last little embellishments to my shoulder bells.  They are now ready for spot filling.

Update:

I still haven't spot filled my shoulder bells that will probably not happen till after spring break as I will be traveling overseas.  I did how ever get several more layers of paint on my armor pieces and all they need now is an acrylic wash to grungy them up and then a sealing coat of something.  A couple need a little spot fixing where my tap came loose.

I also got started on my shin-knees.  I am doing a PVC base with the thiner plastic as the next two layers.  I don't want the full PVC over my knee because I am a fan of knee caps staying where they are meant to be.  ;)

So due to the COVID-19 my missions groups is not leaving the country over spring break.  I now have a week off of work.  So what will I do with my time?

I got some bondo ( got the tubed kind that was reccomended by...

)  And filled in my shoulders and hand armor seams.

And then I started sanding....and sanding & more sanding.

Finally I continued to work on my shins.  A few hours with an electric sander then some hand sanding for the final bits.  I also added the next layer to my shins.  They still need the final layer that will add some decoration and some holes drilled to attach my straps too.

I have found a few good tutorial-like WIP's along with the actual tutorials on MMCC but the more I can see the better.  That way I can avoid mistakes and get the best I can make.

Update:

I got the final layer on my shins...they look decidedly storm trooper esque...hopefully once I add some damage and color that won't be the case.  I also started on my first weapon.  The scraps spoke to me and said they wanted to be a kal.  So, yeah, I made my first prop weapon.  Not done obviously but I am pretty pleased with the results so far.  I also got some spot putty on my chest plate.  Progress!!

If you find it I am definitely interested.  I had to set my bucket aside today when I got frustrated with adding in the cheekbones? cheek pieces?.   I did get some work done on other pieces of my kit.

Update:

Stalled out on the helmet when I tried to attach the cheek pieces but here it is as I left it.

I made and cut out my pattern for the trauma plates for the chest and ab plates...I need to do a little  more reworking with the collar plates.

It's not the most polished of tutorials (and I never got around to doing the earcaps part, lol), but hopefully it will give you some additional insights. :)

Thanks so much! ;D It was quite helpful.  If it's okay with you I like to add your link to my Helmet WIP as well.

I did get the Cheeks attached to my helmet today.  Though I am still a little unsure as to how stable they are.  I used a lot of glue but more is not always better.  I am going to let it sit and cure and give it a test tomorrow.

I also got another layer of silver on.  I have added some physical damage to these pieces too.

Then I got all my trauma plates traced and cut out.  I almost finished sanding them but got sidetracked.  I will probably finish that tomorrow.

It looks really great! Those cheeks are always the hardest part; I've founbd that using a bit of fiberglass cloth or mat, soaked in resin and applied to the inside of the mandibles, will help solidify the cheek area.

And feel free to share the tutorial link with anyone and anyway you like. ;)

Thanks...I put it on my helmet WIP for future reference.  I have never tried using any of those things before but after what happened today I may be ready to learn how.  Don't worry it wasn't too bad,  I just had to redo the cheekbones when I accidentally tore them apart while cutting the visor out.

Update:

I fear it may be too wide.  :(  Hopefully once I am in armor it will look more balanced.

I finished sanding my trauma plates and got most of them heat formed...I didn't finish the chest because I cracked the seam where I had darted it.  So I sanded it down and re-glued it.

Then I started gluing the plates on.

My spray painting took half a step backward.  A gust of wind put leaves and bits all over my pieces.  So I had to sand them down.  I got them back to silver and got one layer of clear as well.  I might be able to do some weathering in the next few days.

I have a more detailed run down on the helmet construction in the Helmet's board.  (Bucket Time)

I also did some painting/ weathering on the shin-knees, hands and shoulders

I still have to wash the masking fluid off (toothpaste) but I am fairly pleased with the results.

Awesome progress :)

Thanks!

So, yesterday I didn't get much done on my kit.  I did however tile the bathroom floor so it was still a productive day.  I tried to do some bondo on my helmet afterwords and flubbed the batch.  I have some scraping to do.

Anyways,  I finished washing off the toothpaste from the pieces.  And painted the heads of the chicago screws for my hands and shoulders.

I patterned out my back plate and set it on my vest to make sure I wasn't off the wall on my sizing.

I started designing my gauntlets...sorry no photos, sketches are really rough.  I also think I decided on my main weapon...I am leaning toward a beskad but one that is on the smaller side.  I also want to make a tranq pistol as my second weapon.  And a whole bunch of other things but not yet.

And I started my second scratch built helmet.

I asked my dad if he had any five gallon buckets...he said sure...I found like 15 outside my porch the next day.  All covered in the roof coating material that he works with but hey...free buckets.  Now I can make all the helmets I want as long as I use buckets.

Not too much to show in terms of direct progress.  A little bit here and little bit there now that school's back up and running online.

I got my back plates sanded.  I haven't decided if I want to do trauma plates on the back yet or just give the illusion with paint.  I'll have to think on it for a few days before I decide.  I have also begun the arduous process of bribing a sibling to assist in forming my back plates.  ;)  Food goes a long way in my family, might have to do some baking.

I also sanded down a layer of bondo on my helmet and added a second layer.

I also started on my beskad.  I found a bit of scrap wood and am using that as the main blade.  I haven't figure out how to do the hilt yet as I want to add a sword breaker prong like on a Jitte.  So I sanded them down but I do need to use some filler to correct a few of the holes that scraps tend to have.

So I finally bribed my sister to help me form my back plate.  My brother ended up helping as well because he was there.  I think it came out pretty good.  One question...can I leave the overlap between collar and backplate? or do I need to trim it down so that they lay flush?

I also got some work done on my weapon.  Mostly just spot filling so nothing much to show.

So what attachment method is better for shin-knees?  Should I use the buckets or try to get it perfect with snaps?  The straps will be secured to the edges of the shin-knee with the chicago screws.

I started on my gauntlets .  I got a basic pattern down and then I made a cardboard mock-up.  The mock-up went fine but when I cut out the actual pieces they were a tad small.  I may still be able to use half of them but I will need to cut the other half out again bigger.  Guess I didn't build enough wiggle room into my pattern for the thickness of the pipe.

I also got my first coat of primer on my one helmet and the second coat of primer on the other.  They're starting to look like the real deal...not cut up five gallon pails.

Rob

Thanks to both of you.

Not much progress to show.  I did a little fiddling with the spacing and getting the collar and shoulder to line up.  I still have a little more to shave off to get a flat fit.  I did get the wood filler and first layer of primer on my beskads.  I realized after that I hadn't added my little greeblies to it yet so I have to sand down the spots where I am adding them and then prime again.  I also started on a box for my belt.   And of course some sanding and priming on the buckets.

So online school is nice if I want to sit on my back porch and sand a piece of armor while listening to my lectures, I can.  Down side is that pretty much every assignment requires a 3-4 page response paper.

Anyway... did some small stuff today.  Got another coat of bondo on my chest piece and sanded it down.  Also did some spot bondo on one of my buckets.  I added my greeblies to my beskad and gave it a coat of glossy black.  I plan on adding some silver and then some graphite tomorrow.  Hopefully it starts looking like an actual weapon.  I painted my box.  Mounted my hand armor to my gloves and did some work on my soft parts.  Hand sewing and long lectures make a great combo.

I had to use longer chicago screw on the front of the hand armor than I was planning.  Gloves had too much padding for the shorter ones I had painted.  So I'll paint some longer ones when  I get out the white next time.

I did my first armor black wash today.  I gathered up my kama/loin war skirt plates and gave it a shot.  I left some stokes showing because I want a 'used but cleaned regularly' look.

I finished my box with a strap for sliding it onto a belt.

I also did a bit more work on my beskad.  I got the silver highlights added.  Then I did a series of clear coats and graphite powder.  I think I might need one more powder rub.  Then I also added leather to the handle.  To the other one I tried the foil tape.  Not done with that one yet but I am not sure I like it.  I'll finish it then decide.

I finally got the straps added to my shin-knees!!!  Now all they need is a black wash to give them some depth and wear.  I also think I'll add some strap keepers to hold down the loose ends.

I also did my first epoxy resin mixing!  I got a layer of fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin layered into the front of both my helmets and inside the dome of the one I made out of the template.  I don't have any after pictures because I don't want to move them till they cure.

I also did a bit more sanding on my weapons but no pictures yet.

So I started a set of larger beskad/swords.  There're coming along nicely.  Got them sanded and the first layer of wood filler on and sanded.  I also got the handles shaped and glued on.  I still need to add the guard and do some spot filling in a few places before I can paint them.

I had an accident with one of my helmets right before I did the resin.  Now that the epoxy resin has cured I am fixing it up and am almost back to were I started.  The other one is nearly complete.  A few more pinholes to fill and then on to my actual paint scheme.  Then of course I get to deal with the padding and trying to put fans in.  Also the visor still needs to be added.

I also finally sanded down my first gauntlet and got the hinge added to one side.

So I haven't updated in a while but I have been working on my kit.  I remade my vest for the third time.  I think I finally got it right.  Anyway, I also got my chest armor finally ready for paint.  I did my three layers of primer then my two layers of silver.  I had just put on my clear coat when my sister ran them over with the car.  I made sure they weren't on the driveway and went for a bottle of water only to come back and find them somewhat squashed.  :'(  She got the collar piece and a bit of the main chest piece.  Fortunately she didn't get any of the back plates.  So, after a brief meltdown, I picked up the pieces and decided to try and fix them.  After some careful heat, bondo, sanding and more spray paint they are once again recognizable as armor plates not tire pancakes.  I do have some 'organic' damage that I will now be adding to my weathering patterns for those pieces.

I also worked on my beskads and a tranq. pistol that I was thinking I would carry.  I really do need to start a weapon WIP.

So test fit today.  I put on everything that would stay on.  Obviously the gauntlets are not done yet.  I still haven't decided what I want to add to the second one.  I also need to secure the bottom of my backplates to the vest.  I also need to finish padding my helmet and figure out how to add a fan.  And of course some of my softs still need weathering.

So I have been making slow progress over the last week or so.  I got my chest diamond finished.  All the paint layers same as I have been doing and then added magnets to the back to keep it attached to my vest.  I used JP weld to glue the magnets to the back of the diamond.

I also worked on my left gauntlet a bit more.  Added my dart launchers and my "comm" into the gauntlet.  Then I added the holder for my field cauterizer.  Added a few layers of Bondo, some of that glorious sanding, then three layer of primer.   I am out of my silver base color so I have to go shopping before I can go any further with the paint.

I also worked on my field cauterizer.  I added some color and a bit of PVC to the piece itself and then glued on a strip of Sintra to help it hold itself in place on the gauntlet.

I appreciate the feedback.  I am aware that I need to do it but I keep putting it off as I am the mender and maker in the family.  Adding damage was a bit like pulling teeth for me so I am dreading adding 'wear and tear' to my new garments.  Ahh well, the life of a costumer.  I know I will like the end result as I do like the used look I've gotten so far from my armor.  I just have to grit my teeth and do it!

As to what I have been up to...

I continued to work on my right gauntlet.  I have gotten it all the way through the paint it just needs the black and brown washes that I have been using on everything else.  I am holding off on that till I finish the second one so that I can get them both at the same time.

I did finally start on accessorizing my left gauntlet.  I added a box, sized to fit my phone.  I added some magnets and will make a cut out on the green top plate.  The top plate will be removable.  My phone will display something Star Warszy when it is in position.  I still want to add a grapple line to the outside of this one as well as some buttons.  So this one still has a ways to go before its ready.

Okay more fun with gauntlets and some repair work.  One of the plates on my kama was broken...still not sure how?  Anyway, I glued it back together and then put some JB Weld on the back to reinforce the piece.  I am thinking of gluing a bit of fabric to the piece as well to help it hold together.

I do think I need to start a gauntlet thread so I'll just show how far I have gotten.

And a layer of primer to help me identify where I still need to fill in,

Nearly finished with the paint on my gauntlets.  I still need to add the gold and do the black and brown washes to complete the weathering.  I think I might a few more details like a stud sort of look to the pieces on the front.  I haven't decided yet.  I also got paint on my scalpel.

I finally did some weathering on my vest and I decided to do the pouches at the same time.  Because I chose black it's kind of hard to see the wear I put on them.  I did make sure to rough of some of the stitching which is easier to see.

Thanks Dan Hawk.  I think I am getting close.  ;D

I decided I wanted a bit more weathering on my softs.  It still doesn't look quite balanced compared to my plates so I added a bit of brown acrylic to my vest.  I like the look it gave.  Made it a bit more grungy without taking away from the black.  Now I just need to do the same thing to the pouches, holster and kama.

It's still a little hard to see the weathering on the black but if you compare weathered with versus without, you can see the difference.

And I got some weathering on my gloves.  Some good old fashioned digging in the dirt and a bit of charcoal from the campfire pit.  I'll probably wipe them down a bit after I let the dirt settle into the fabric.

Hey Dan Hawk, I attached my hand plates with chicago screws.  I hand sewed some eyelets in to my gloves  for the screws to fit through.  You can see this better if you go to my soft parts WIP.  About halfway down the first page shows the process I used to attach them.

Update:

I got the brown acrylic on my gun belt, pouches and Kama!

I made and weathered the sheath and belt loop for my Beskad today.  I finished my helmet, more or less.  I finished my jaw armor and mounted it to my cut down baclava.  I still need to mount the fans in my helmet but that is more for comfort.  I think I am just about there!

So I had a day off!!  :porg2:
What better way to spend it then cleaning and working on my kit.

I am completely sold on the Mandos with spears.  And since Mando has shown us a lovely simple, not vibro spear, I am going that route.

So I observed images and made a template

Then I put it on a piece of wood

Cut as much as I could with a saw

Then got sanding!

And some more sanding

I as I am a musician the idea of a literal 'instrument' of death has a certain appeal.  As such I am attempting make a bes'bev.  I have seen a lot of flute like versions but there is really no definitive version of this instrument so I took some inspiration by the bass recorder that does the lead on the Mandalorian Theme song and went the recorder route.  I got the mouth piece done and then realized that I didn't have the connector so I set it aside for now.  Pretty much a glorified whistle right now.

I am also starting on my extras to get into brigades...medic here I come.

SO, virbro scalpel, regular scalpel and not sure what I will do with the third one.   Also did some work on my bacta injector.

So today I got some more work done on my spear.  A bit more sanding to make it a touch thinner and have a more defined gradient between the middle and the edge.  I also got the wood filler on and sanded.  Then I got the first layer of primer on.  YAY!  I also worked on the counter balance for the other end.

I finished my vibro scalpel.

I also added some filler to a few places on my bacta injector.

Made a bandolier today, I think it came out pretty good.  It is removable, which will be useful down the road.  The base strap is the same as my lower belt.  I added some nylon strapping to hold down the buckle.  The buckle is intended to eventually attach to my spear/anything I may carry on my back, eventually.

Attachment point is on my gunbelt.

It attached to the belt via snaps.  (still don't like adding those)

Attached my buckle...after painting it to not look like plastic.  So two layers of silver, clear coat, then glossy black topped with graphite power and some usage damage.

And weathered

I also worked on my bacta injector...all it needs is some weathering washes and I need to make my bacta for the tube.

Rob

Thanks Rob  :)

Happy New Years!

Okay that's out of the way.  I got some stuff done.  I finally started a weapons WIP so more details of how I made my stuff will be there.

http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=197589.0

I am making an Amban Sniper Rifle.  While I probably won't carry it much with this kit I have plans (conspiratorial chuckle) for another kit.  Plus it's probably one of the few guns in the Star Wars universe that just speaks to me.

So far I have cut out the stock, forward grip and prong thing out of wood and done a ton of sanding.  Still a bit more sanding to go before I am satisfied but it is close.  I also tend to make things in pairs.  So yeah, I am making two of them.

I also poured some resin into test tubes that I had colored and made my first bacta!  Weathered my injector, so that is done now!

Green ones are Kolto...read somewhere that Kolto was greenish.

I also started some shells for the bandolier.

Finished the shells for my bandolier.  I may paint the stripes black but I haven't decided yet.

I coated the prongs for my rifles with resin.  Then dyed the left over resin red and made some stim tubes.

Alright mostly worked on weapons today.  Did a bit of work on my Amban Rifle and also did a little work on a some mini bacta spays.

Question about the sprayer heads...I want them to be 'spray' but the heads are a bit distinctive.  Not sure what to add to make them look more warzy.

Got some paint on the prongs and barrels of my rifles and did a bit of sanding to the one.

I also made a roll pouch thing to hold some of my medical tools and supplies.  Still need to get some scissors and bandages.

Title: Re: WIP First Armor Kit
Post by: Vercopaanir on Jan 15, 2021, 04:59 PM
I applied to be an OM and got an email back yesterday.  A few things they would like me to fix before I get in.  So here's the list.

Fix List
- Inconsistent weathering, armor has weathering but soft parts need a
little more work, from vest, flight suit, belt, sash, gloves, black
leather parts and boots
- Raw rivets need to be painted to match armor, back plate rivets need
to be done
- Left shoulder bell needs to be aligned better
- knee area on schnees need to be more defined and will need to be built
up more.

So the first thing I did was paint the heads of my Chicago screws to match the armor.

Then I weathered them to match the armor

Next I planned how to fix my shnees...talked to my Ruus'alor Sol'yc and we agreed that the patterning for the first one was better than the second as it made the knee  look more like a separate entity from the shin.

So I cut out the pieces, heat formed them to fit into the knee area.  Sanded, glued, Bondoed (new word!), sanded and began painting.

Still have a few more coats of paint to go and then the weathering washes to match the rest of the piece.

Next thing I started to address was the weathering for my soft goods.  I started with the vest.  The vest is already pretty dirty and as my kit is not an overly dirty one I didn't really want to add more brown to it.  Instead I added damage.  I took one of my sanding blocks and went at it.  I roughed up the sides and edges, as well as the a larger portions of the back and a bit more around the neck and shoulder area.

Next I addressed the sash/Kama/Loin cloth piece.  I did add some 'dirt' and 'grime' here.  I did a bit more brown on the main sash part as well a haze of black.  I roughed up the edges a bit more giving it the slightly fuzzy look of something well worn. And a touch more brown and sanding to the pleather.

Next up was the belt and pouches.  These I roughed up a bit more and added a more brown paint to dirty them up.  The belt got brown paint added and I ran a harsher sanding block over it.

I'll deal with the flight suit in the next couple of days and finish the shnees.
Title: Re: WIP First Armor Kit
Post by: Vercopaanir on Jan 16, 2021, 04:34 PM
Flight suit has been dirtied up with some black.  I started here with the pants.

And added some very watered down black paint as a haze and a few  more bold lines to show up better under my armor.

Then I went to the shirt.  This one took to the coffee staining much better than the pants for some reason.  It is also largely unseen.  It gets tucked into the pants and then under the vest.  The only visible parts are part of the sleeves and the sides.  Knowing this I concentrated my black in those areas.

Started here:

Went to here:

And I finished adding paint and weathering to my shnees

So I still need to address the gloves and boots but that shouldn't take much.  The boots went to the barn three times this week and are good and dirty.  I still need to rough of the gloves a bit more.  I might use them to move the wood pile.  Natural damage is so much more authentic right?  :)

Shoulder bell alignment I'll deal with when I kit up.

YES!! Soon...before everything gets too busy.   :porg2:

Gloves have been further traumatized.  I did move some wood but I didn't think it did enough damage so I attacked them with a sanding block, rubbed some dirt and charcoal on them as well.

Then I looked at my black pleather stuff and didn't feel like it was enough so I grabbed a lighter and did some melting.  I tried to match damage to where my paint is chipped.  I also took the lighter to my pouches.

Starling

1) The majority of my kit was actually inspired by a more legacy style armor melded with the modern look.  I prefer a solid breastplate despite the mild restriction in movement across the body. (Harder to hunch over/round shoulders in a solid breastplate).  2) Go for it!   :like:  The backplate is just a lightly modified version of the Drake Legacy templates from the forums with a trauma plate on the top panel.  I matched those up with the modern collar from the templates on the forum and my custom chest and ab plate.  Be inspired and make it your own.   ;)

Just a note on the chest plate...I did end up having to cut the darts on the chest plate a bit deeper than what is pictured in my cut out.  I needed a little more room to get the right curve, not much maybe another 2-3mm.

No problem Starling.  As to whether or not you can do that, I'd check with your clan Ruus'alor Sol'yc, post-imperial wasn't a armor category when I drafted my pieces so I didn't have to worry about it.

Update:

Did some work on my bandolier.  It was a touch to small with all my layers on so I added a bit to it.  I haven't decided if I want to use the silver ring, painted black, or the black rectangle.

I am also working this kit toward the Medics Brigade so I did some work on the trimmings to make it so.  Got some jackets on my bacta, kolto and stim tubes.

Finished off my stimpak

Made a holder thing to carry my stimpak

Did a bit more work on my weapons.  Pics and update in The Armory.

http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=197589.0

And I added to a pair of locking scissors to make them look a bit more star warzy.

Still going!!

I decided to go with a ring painted black and slightly bent out of shape.  And I built in a leash for the eventual weapon that I will wear strapped over my back.  Be it the spear or the amban sniper rifle.

Can't believe I missed your acceptance post here on the forums, Hope....great (continuous) work, and welcome to Merc officialdom! :D

I'm looking forward to trooping with you in the future (once this pandemic has been put to bed)...until then, keep up the good work! ;)

Thanks Rob!

I am so excited by getting accepted that everyone at work and around the house pretty much knows by now.  :porg2:  I am looking forward to doing more troops in the future.  Will  you be making it to the fan film?
Also I just found your PDF for the hanging gun holster using the door hook and chain.  Really good wish I found it sooner for a few of the things I scrapped would have done well with that idea.  Anyway, not sure if you're still updating the clan tutorial page but you might want to throw it on there.  It's good stuff.   ;D

And update...got the strap added and the rings on the barrel of the rifle.  It's too heavy thought for my set up.  Pulls my belt up about and inch so I will have to make it its own sling to carry it with.

I did some work on my weapons.  More pictures and stuff can be found on the weapons board under my thread The Armory.

http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=197589.msg2207080#new

I painted the handle of my Westar a matte black and then gave it a light brown wash to weather it a bit more.

And I weathered it's holster

And I worked on my spear finally got it wrapped with leather and then weathered.  Sorry pic is blurry.  I'm sure I'll get better pics at some point.  :)

I started planning some more stuff.  I'm thinking these would make pretty good rockets to attach to my boot.  I am heading towards medic brigade and am considering adding in a second profession, so more stuff is happening.  I have been planning medic stuff all along and I am getting close.

Anyways, rocket boots!  So I laid out two configurations but I am leaning more toward the second one.  (Don't worry the beads have a new home, they just haven't made it there yet.

The brass tube will be cut in half and stand in as the lighter.  Think gauntlet flame thrower.  The bead containers are the "fuel cells" and then the central bit is the rocket.  I feel like they need some exposed wiring or something. I also think I want to distance the fuel cells from the main rocket shaft just a bit but then I think it might look odd.  A puzzle to continue sorting out.

And I want a holdout blaster...so I picked up these.  The water guns were under a dollar and I think they will be easier to modify so I'll probably mess around with them first.

Finally finished sanding my second Westar and got the first layer of primer on today.

Had a bit of time today so I got to work on some stuff.  I fixed up my holster that I broke right before we began filming.  Worked on a hold out blaster,  it still needs some painting done and I have a few more greeblies to add after it's painted.  I also added some 'beskar' chainmail to one side of my vest.  Working on the second side already.  And I made a new shoulder bell for the brigades.

I started making a gun cleaning kit...still needs a few more pieces but it should fit into one of the pouches on my belt pretty easily.  I also painted some beads for the bacta patching that I will be making.

And started painting some teeth for future trophies.

The movie shoot looks like it was a blast; I'm sorry that I couldn't make it, because I had some Darth Real Life stuff come up... looking forward to seeing the footage some day.

Thanks to all of you for making the Protectors proud. :D

Thanks Starling!  Most of what I am working on is just using up scraps from my armor construction.  It's fun mixing and matching tidbits to get something cool at the end.

And more stuff... Vibropicks finished, some work on the war fan and weathered the scrambler key.

Rob

They truly are a lot of fun.  When I sanded down the edges to make it con safe I got the whine of, WHY?, from the kids.  They were all disappointed I wasn't going to leave it sharp.  They are happy to be allowed to play with now so they got over it real fast.   :)

I'm impressed by how much the beads and wire add to the aesthetic!

The smallest things can sometimes make the biggest difference.  I also happened to have the beads out when I was working...so a few found there way onto the blade.  A few more got lost somewhere between the table and the floor, guess I'll find those later when I vacuum.  ;)

Made a sheath to go with the blade.

Out of curiosity, what things tend to need repairs after a troop?

So my hand plates got a bit tore up by my gauntlets.  I ran into a table and broke my bacta injector and holder. And I had to reseal some of my Chicago screws. Otherwise not much else other then disinfecting  the armor and flight suit.

Scrap building!!!  Pretty much all I've done after my initial build phase.   This past week I decided to work on a pair of cuffs.  So I took two rounds from the pipe I used to make my schnees, the door hanger chain that I cut off so that I could use the rest for mounting my O2 canister to my medic bag, hinge left over from the gauntlets and a pair of magnets that didn't get used when I mounted my plates.   Also a bit of PVC board for the raised details (actually starting to run out finally...ordered way more then I need for the armor but it was a better price that way so...).

I'm breaking this post up into 'days' to show you how much (or little) I do at any one time.

Day one - assembly of parts, cut the pipe to size

Day two- Cut pipe in half and sand a beveled edge in, cut hinge to size and sand down the rough edges, glue hinge to pipe

Day three- Cut out rectangles to go on pipe, bevel edge, heat and form to shape of pipe, sand a second time with a finer sanding block

Day four- glue the pieces to the pipe, drill the holes and mount the chain, sand down for the magnet and mount that in place

I still need to figure out the padding for the inside so that they can fit a larger group of people at cons and paint them.

Update:  Got an amazing 3-D printed piece for my medic's kit (had to wait for approval before adding the brigades sigil).  My Ruus' (who has a 3-D printing business) did an amazing job modeling and printing this piece for me.  I now have two 3-D printed pieces on my kit.  It came out so amazing!!!

And cont. for the binders

Days five and six were non-production days, aka I didn't work on them at all

Day seven- Painted the primer and the first silver coat

Day eight- clear coat then graphite powder 2x

(https://i.imgur.com/EkXcyGL.jpg) 1x
(https://i.imgur.com/NHmUOiZ.jpg)(https://i.imgur.com/H1EzExX.jpg) 2x

Alrighty!  So short troop this past weekend.  The troop was longer but I only made it for about two hours of it.  Missed the 501st guys which was a bit of a bummer  :'( but caught the other Mando on his way out which was great!  :like:  Pretty sure somewhere around 200$ was raised for the Little Warriors.

And I have been working on some more extras for my kit. (not like I actually need anything else but I really do enjoy building things and trying new stuff.  It's kinda turned into my self therapy.)

So I've got some grab bombs/charges and shells in the production process as well as another glowing stabby from PSessum.

Waiting for the resin to cure!

And plans for the next armor in the works.  I was going to build it for me but my sister decided that she liked it.  So I might make it for her.  Would be nice to have another Merc in the family.

Color palette for the next armor as well as the first test of the design for detail.

Aaiiieee, I can't believe I found you on here! You're always super helpful on MMCC Facebook group. Really not sure if you'd remember me but I've spammed the group a LOT. Your schnees also inspired my newer schnee design, the first ones didn't  end up fitting my Mando's aesthetic so I had to scrap them.  :'(

Would you mind if I added you as a friend here on the forums? I'd really love to keep track of you and hopefully get some advice here and there because I eventually wanna join the medic brigade and your Mando has actually been a huge source of inspiration for me.   :<3:

Hello Flo Brin!  Your are more then welcome to friend me and I will do my best to help you or point you in the correct direction to get help.  We can always use some more medics  ;)

It is always sad when the first idea doesn't work out.  I had to scrap my original paint scheme for my chest plate but it ended up being a good thing as I like what came out of it much better.

Okay quick update on what I have been up to.

I am still working on bits and pieces for this build, I doubt I will ever be completely done.  In the meantime I have started a second build.  This one is for my little sister (was originally for me but she liked it and I wouldn't mind a trooping buddy).  So I'm going to throw the links for that build here.

Softs https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=203568.msg2229810#msg2229810

Also I am planning on a Ursa Wren build.  I haven't started a thread for that yet but I will need to soon so that I can get the app team involved as there isn't a CRL for her yet.  So coming soon...

Next is some of the finished stuff.  I was given a thrower with the clan sigil on it and I finally got around to finishing it.

And still working on the glowing stabby number 2.  I got a coat of silver on it.  More photos and details on my weapons WIP.

I think that just about sums things up.   :)

Wow that knife looks so cool! I'm pretty sure someone else on the forum did an Ursa Wren build, but I'm not sure who..... I'll look! Plus that seems so cool, I love that style of armor that is introduced in rebels.

Thanks for the link!

I have a friend who is getting into photography and they asked if I would be a subject.  Of course I said yes and here's the first few photos they finished.
