Title: Modern Medium Custom WIP: Maul Mando
Post by: D'shon Lorra on Jan 23, 2020, 12:59 AM
Moved from my self-intro thread:

Building up to start a suit of armor, I have questions that are more specific than I find answers in the forums. Doesn't mean they aren't there, just my searching is mediocre. It may be a case of having more artistic liberty than I expected.

First, I want my character as a Mandalorian to have a back story. Not detailed, but a rough RPG-style bio with six-degrees-of-separation link to the universe we know. Try this:

-:- My name is D'shan (sounds like "dish on") but I respond just as well to Mando.
-:- I was affiliated with Bo-Katan's Nite Owls primarily as a technician until the fiasco that was her/our falling out with the rest of Death Watch. Never met the woman, I was too low level.
-:- Around the time of the purge, I got separated from the clan - they probably think I'm dead - and I haven't found any of them yet. I hope they are in hiding.

Is there any reason not to run with that?

Then, my custom armor concept based on the recent TV Death Watch style with a Night Owl bucket:

My goal is to land somewhere between this woman from Wookiepedia:

and this man from the Disney TV show:

I really like the Nite Owl helmet but I am totally willing to give that up if it will prevent me having a shot at approval as an OM. I am all in for this, the first cosplay idea to really get my attention.

I want the soft goods to all be shades of burgundy and dark brown and the armor to revolve around a dark cadet blue. Simple enough to buy a quart of the darkest shade I like and cut it with white for two or three lighter shades, right? Footwear can be whatever dark color I find that meets the needs of the judges and my comfort - I let black be a placeholder for now. A gun belt and a utility belt, likely found items from resale shops or the army surplus store will be my two waist items. I think those need to be opportunistic and dyed dark if the color of the cool things that turn up isn't what I want.

I will probably buy an armor kit from someone on the forums - Gungan Armory got my attention - and then keep the "professionally made" parts in reserve while I play with Sintra (or the Home Depot equivalent) for the parts that aren't included in the kit. Learn shaping and finishing on self-made simpler parts, the ones I can reproduce for cheap when my learning curve consumes them, then tackle the kit when I know what I'm doing. I do think the Death Watch kit there is missing either a back plate or thigh guards; I confess my identification of the parts in the Death Watch kit shown is iffy, but it doesn't add up to to all the non-helmet blue parts of my vision. It does have a cod piece, that I specifically do not want to be blue. (Gungan Armory thread. (https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=89825.0))

In the CRLs, I see I must use a cod piece. Would it be ok for the cod piece to be colored like the soft goods instead of like the other hard pieces? I am enamoured of the crew who rescued Din Djarin and want to emulate them most of all.

Is there a technician or construction battalion type insignia in use? I figure that, at their height, the Mandalorians were like the Marines: everyone trained to fight well enough, and those with additional aspirations were cultivated for specific support jobs, like that gorgeous armorer in the show. I have put a simple placeholder in on the right chest piece, right thigh, and right shoulder (not shown). Death Watch/Clan Visla tag on the left shoulder.

If there is no such insignia, can I make my up own? Nothing fancy, those three lines can be interpreted as a cutting tool in action, a mathematical operator, a construction scaffold, and/or a tripod-mounted weapon. (Yes, I am an engineer IRL!)

Thoughts?

You can have whatever backstory you wish - it won't change or effect the CRLs.

Night Owl can be used with any modern era custom armour.

You must have a groin covering of some form. This must be either a hard cod plate, or a soft fabric covering that is long enough to cover the whole of the place a cod would sit. Fabric must be made from sturdy material and well finished (though it may be then weathered). You may colour it, no matter which you pick, however you wish. As long as you are staying away from glitter paint and earth based symbols and designs, your paint scheme is your own.

You may wear a personal symbol, it must not be drawn from earth symbols to the extent that we can see the origin. You may also modify or use as is symbols from the show that are not worn only by a canon character (eg Sabine shoulder designs are canon only).
We have a set of orientated symbols for use in the Brigades - this is a set of further CRLs (called BRLs) that are intended for use after base approval. At least one of those is an engineer.

Kris hit everything that I would have so I’ll just say this. I like your concept and think it can work well (just be sure to have a cod plate of loin (which can be the same color as your flightsuit) and you’re good!). Following with interest :)

Great! Thank you for the encouragement.

I think I will let go of the wish for burgundy textiles and make my first cut black and dark gray soft goods. I already have very plain black leather gloves that I like, I have very plain black leather boots that I can wear all day, I have long sleeved black shirts from which to choose the undershirt, and I found what I think is a great belt for a waist band cover at a resale shop on my way home tonight. The otherwise super-silly loop design that was intended to be the front will be very useful at the back of my kit as a place to hang accessories. The belt I got for $1.50:

thinking it will work out fine worn backwards as a covering for the waist of scrub pants:

I found scrubs on Amazon for about $20 that are dark gray, to break up the monotony of all black under the plates. I'm short, so I think I'll cut off enough fabric to make a small fit me that I can use the left overs to make a neck seal. I don't want to go too heavy on the fabrics, knowing I'll have on three shirts under the plates and I live in southeast Texas!

Or, check my layer count: long-sleeved undershirt, scrub top, heavy vest, then the plates on top. And, oh yeah!, I might decide I want a capelet or duster, just because I think they look cool. :-D

If the belt is elastic you'll need to be covering the elastic portion.

And a tip for if layers get too hot - on any underneath layers cut out panels where they can't be seen and replace with mesh.

Post by: D'shon Lorra on Jan 28, 2020, 12:57 PM
I was expecting that... is it enough to cover it with a layer of other fabric or thin leather/pleather and add a greeblie or two?

Vents! I'll add that to my late-add list.

Yes, that's a great way to easily mod it.
Title: Re: LStarrunner's WIP: accumulating soft goods
Post by: D'shon Lorra on Feb 10, 2020, 10:24 PM
The accumulation of first-attempt soft goods is complete. I cannot say I am satisfied at all with the scrubs-as-flightsuit. Check this out:

Now, I have thrown the scrubs and custom vest from K'raam Xrati into the washer. I have faith the vest will 'weather' nicely with just regular washing with cold water and hanging up to dry. Worst case, it is so very sturdy that it needs to be beaten up by going through the washer with an old pair of running shoes.  The scrubs are not so straight forward to me. My current plan is to wash them repeatedly, and dry them on hot to try to shrink them as well as relax them. Going in, this size small set fits me as if I got it from Tent & Awning.

Dare I leave the lower legs essentially as they are in confidence that tucked into boots, covered with thigh plates, knees, and greaves, the pants don't matter much?

I do not like how the hips and rear fit me - Tent & Awning? - but waist items, a codpiece, and duster or cape might make them not matter either. Thoughts?

This has reinforced my hatred for drawstring pants as a concept.

Wearing them round the house will also get them nice and worn in. I went through a flightsuit as everyday wear time to get mine away from that crisp new feel.

I would recommend some elastic on the trousers, either as an underfoot stirrup or round the ankle to keep them in the boot and not blousing and wrinkling at the knee.

I use a cod with an elastic strap that goes up to the rear of my belt and a kama. You can't notice you could fit two of my rears into my flightsuit :P and at least I'll never worry about ripping that part.

LOL That is one upside of the fit, these pants will never rip.

Thanks. I will figure out some elastic placement to help them fit.

After modifications per the armor party yesterday (Thank you lots, Kai!) I have laid out the full set of custom armor templates on the half sheet of 6mm PVC Rissa gifted me (Thank you lots, Marissa!).

Now, I am going to leave that solid inch or so on the top curve of the ab plate in case that piece needs to be taller, but otherwise try to be efficient with use of the PVC sheet. I want to at least have bits left that can be replacement/spare/alternate iron hearts, as well as that back-plate-sized chunk in the upper right of the image. Is that a decently good idea, or does experience say I ought not try to place them so close together?

Inventory in image: chest plates, iron heart, ab plate, back plate, two thighs, two shoulders, a two-part collar, and a three-part cod. Thoughts?

Can't claim experience with sintra (yet...) - but it's easier to remove material than add it back in! Plus if your chest plates will be curved you'll end up needing more material than you think. You can always hit up your local sign shop for sintra scraps if you need small replacement parts later
Title: Re: LStarrunner's WIP: starting armor plates

I cut mine out one at a time. So I can nestle them right up to each other as the cut edge from the first becomes the edge of the second etc. I start with the biggest or straightest edged bits first and put that in a corner and just work from there.
Yes, leave excess on the ab plate and I recomend excess on the outside edge of the chest plates. Depending on how much shaping the chest plates need the angles can change a fair bit having excess means you can shape then trim it to have the line you want.

Finally reengaging after the hijacking of life as we know it. I was sooooo bummed when my Clan's March and May armor parties were canceled, but I did finish bending my plates. Now, I have to do detailed shaping. Placement question: does the ab plate rest at the natural waist, such that when I bend over it will be 100% above the bend, or should it ride somewhat lower such that it makes bending over forward problematic? I need to know this so I can sort out exactly how much I want to take off the ab plate versus the chest plates to have them space correctly and "fit" together.

Cross-posting to my own thread from the Kick the Bucket thread:

I finally got around to smoothing the cutout in my bucket today! I roughed it out a while back with a dremel tool - rough being the key word! - and it had sat staring at me accusingly since the shutdowns in March. Here it is with white paper in place of the visor for contrast:

I forget where I read it, but the originator of the advice to glue chicago screws inside and drill little holes in the corners of the visor to mount it was brilliant. Super glue on ABS plastic makes an immediate bond.

What do you think: should I leave the supports at the top and bottom of my 'beak' in after I get it all painted up (the supports would stay flat black to blend in with the visor), or cut them out eventually?

I spent three hours sanding just my helmet the other day. It started out as "I need to level out the bondo," and then it dawned on me that the smooth plastic areas were likely to not take paint well, so I kept at it. 120 grit, then 220 grit. I see some still-black areas in the pics, so will hit those again. Want to ask here: is the 220-grit matte finish good for taking paint on ABS plastic?

Progress!

Thighs shaped and one knee finished:
.
Also realized the breastplates need to ride higher and be cut down in the center:
.
Marked them up:

and
(https://i.imgur.com/Xh3jhZX.jpg)
.
Ending up here:
.
And had a great chat with my Ruus'alor tonight about it all. Happy thoughts that I can implement all his advice.

The closer I get to actually painting, I find I am falling out of love with the Death Watch blue. My personal color is actually a dark red - like antique ruby. Swapping it in for the base blue in my earlier artwork gives me this:

My RPG characters are always my soul in a different circumstance. I figure I started as a proper Night Owl when Death Watch still felt righteous. I was disappointed when Viszla lost to Maul, and disgusted when Kryze left in protest instead of challenging Maul properly. I stayed until Maul deserted us. As a rank-and-file nobody, I never heard what sounded like a real explanation.
Title: Re: LStarrunner's WIP: breastplates are annoying AF
Post by: D'shon Lorra on Jan 11, 2021, 09:57 PM
Working with my Ruus'alor, I got to cutting down my front-facing kit. Collar first, trimmed to allow a better range of motion on my arms.

1. Marked up:
.
2. Cut but not finished, and first hack at the right breastplate:
.
I feel pretty good about that collar.
.
Then, I realized the breastplate still doesn't curve in enough to "follow my body".
.
And the faceted edges did not hold up to cutting/whittling, which I think means I was frustrated and not gentle with them, more than it means the seams are unsalvageable:
.
Then, I think I mistook advice from my Ruus'alor that sounded like I should do this:
.
Which took me here:
1. (https://i.imgur.com/T1u2O2i.jpg)
.
2. (https://i.imgur.com/lHn2CTP.jpg)
.
Now I think this set is another sacrifice to the pursuit of knowledge. Is my idea of making them faceted worth pursuing? Would it be acceptable for me to make them more faceted? And what if I treat them like the iron hearts I was playing with, and make them from layers of 3mm, instead of directly from 6mm? The scuff-and-glue-together lay-up of 3mm sheets after shaping seems to be very solid. Help?
.
I will post a specific question thread, too.

Needed a break from futzing with shapes, so I sanded the simplest of my plates and got to painting.

Naked pair of thighs, gauntlets, and one experimental back plate:
.
Two coats of primer:
.
Two coats dark base:
.
Two coats metallic:
.
Two coats "original" blue:
.
Three coats wine red:
.
And I have ordered an iridescent visor, because this has to happen:
.
So, now I wait for the paint to cure completely in the humidity so I can paint the helmet and whatever else I feel good about by then. Happy thoughts!

Still putting off working on breastplates again, I spent some time on my soft goods. That $1.50 resale shop belt has been covered with simple black fabric:
I really like how it gathers up naturally, but now need to figure out what to do for the rings:
And I used the same fabric to make myself a rough cape:
Side:
With the belt:
And now I want to embellish it, so I played around with scraps. I figured out that bleach has no effect at all on this particular fabric's color, but acrylic paint works fine. Tried a mythosaur skull:
And a Vizsla/Death Watch emblem:
Thinking that when I put one on my cape, as a bullseye over the place my backplate rides, it needs to have some Maul markings added in red and black.  Not too much of either, but enough, like a splash of red on each wing with a black line or two through the red patches.

The body of beast should remain white: the heart stays Vizsla, even though the power has moved to Maul.

Soft goods and waist item check. (Plates progress will be added another day - these pics were taken with old plates while new ones were curing. They still need sanding, edging, and fine-tuning to line up with each other properly.)

3 belts: one holds a set of show-inspired hip-covers, then it gets covered with the wide black belt, and a third skinny one goes over top to hold utility items.
Taking the advice that it's best to go overboard on waist items so there's no doubt there are two. "Utility items" so far are just bags, but I have other bits in work to clip on the belts, too. The wide black belt sort of disappears and looks like the bottom of my vest, but I promise it's there. It's is the one pictured alone in the previous update.
.
This image shows the other bag I am flirting with, and seems to better show the scrubs, undershirt, and vest combo.
.
Both bags, side by side:
.
And this pic lets the little scraps of sintra I use to keep the skinny belts in place show up:
Proposal is to finish/paint the scraps used for pins and dye the weird webbed belts.

Specific questions I hope to get answered:
1. After dying, do you think the weird web belts I scored from a resale shop will be acceptable?
2. Would I be better off to mess with the wide belt's cover or the vest, to make it easier to tell the belt is there?
3. Is it CRL-acceptable to have the show-inspired ducktail and hip covers?
4. Is it likely that the simpler bag on the right will be acceptable after weathering, and the one on the left will either get rejected or relegated to hiding under my cape?
5. When submitting an app with a cape, are photos with and without it required? I thought I read that the backplate is optional, if one has a cape or duster, but no longer trust that memory. I plan to have a backplate - I have two in work - but also made that cape. For carrying a speaker facing forward, the simpler bag will work, but the zippered one would be great, hidden at my back, to hold my cell phone and keys. Practical things for being out in the world.
6. Do the pics so far give enough view of the cape to form an opinion as to whether it is heavy enough? I am waffling about adding a third layer of fabric between the current two, to give it more weight.

Thanks, Awall!  :maul:

I have been busy since, wanting to have a batch ready to paint before the anniversary of receiving my helmet. I had the helmet, knees, shins, and cod all ready to go, but it was too cold and humid. Then the Great Power Outage of 2021 happened here in Texas and I lost that whole week. (Fortunate I only lost a few hours of vacation and plants, we all stayed warm enough boiling water on the gas cooktop while we were out of power those days.)

So, here's where I am now.
1. Discovered the beauty that is Apoxie Sculpt (Thank you, hazelspikes (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=192460.msg2150669#msg2150669)!) and used it on the latest breast plates, shins, experimental shoulder bell, and flatter backplate:
.
2. Sanded down and further shaped the breastplates:
.
3. Heard back that the lower collar bar is acceptable in the CRLs for Modern, so I can keep it, it just needs cut to closer shape. Progress:
.
4. Went on a painting spree after we warmed back up this week.
a. Naked Helmet, sample iron hearts, cod pieces, shins, and knees:
b. Two coats primer:
c. Two coats dark undercoat:
d. Two coats metallic:
e. Two coats "original" night owl blue:
f. Three coats final color (red helm and hearts, dark cod, knees, and shins):
.
5. Was very happy it was low enough humidity for it all to cure out well in about 2 days! Felt ok taking my helmet apart so I could take the tape off the visor and try it on:
.
6. And got a shot of it with my first experimental back plate ("the curved one") while working to gather my vest to fit more closely:
.
I am going to enjoy it in its "new" condition for a while before adding battle damage. I have time: my vambraces haven't shipped yet and there's still plenty to do. Must get the final plates whittled and sanded to shape - I am down to taking off slivers! - including machine sanding that flatter back plate to see how the facets turn out when added/enhanced after the fact.

More progress.
1. Cut out the breastplates to frame an iron heart

.
2. Took side view pics for my Ruus'Alor.

.
4. Put my version of the Clan Vizsla emblem on my cape and Maul-marked it up -
(https://i.imgur.com/eBRIsjR.jpg).
.
5. Geeked out a bit about well it works with my still-new helmet, gauntlets, and staff -
(https://i.imgur.com/2LyJoOg.jpg).
.
6. Got so excited that my April Storm vambraces arrived that I took no Before pictures and just started sanding and fiddling with the lights and buttons -
(https://i.imgur.com/Qikpv4n.jpg).
.
7. And set up for painting it all.
a. Naked parts laid out - if you look closely, you can see the vambraces hanging at the far end -
(https://i.imgur.com/2XhgQNo.jpg).
,
b. Failed to a take a picture of the primer or dark undercoat, but remembered for the metallic layer -
(https://i.imgur.com/6LhQlse.jpg).
.
c. And the "original" Night Owl blue -
(https://i.imgur.com/OVMH1qu.jpg).
.
Then, I realized how late it was and that I had to be a grownup the next morning, so there they sit. They will pass the 24-hour mark tonight, and there is supposed to be some less humid air tomorrow afternoon, so I can add their top color.

Also, decided it was time to go for my Mando name and sound off for the veterans list. At some point, I should start showing up as D'shon Lorra and drop the LStarrunner.

I have been busy this week...
1. Finished the big paint job.
.
2. Played with weathering the flatter back plate.
a. as painted, I thought I needed to sand it off and try again...
.
b. but the blue popped out during sanding and made me think maybe it would be ok...
.
c. so I played with some rub-N-buff...
.
d. then sanded some more...
.
e. and put on a dirt wash...
.
And I like it.
3. Then put in the new visor
.(https://i.imgur.com/GEeT0DX.jpg)
.
4. And added Maul markings.
.
I love this bucket!!

More progress.
.
1. Figured out how to make stencils out of painters tape and wax paper.
a. Getting started
(https://i.imgur.com/I928MZk.jpg)
.
b. Deathwatch/Vizsla for my left shoulder:
.
c. My own simple symbol for field engineer:
.

.
d. Shoulder, chest, and thigh ready to paint:
.
.
e. And painted:
.
.
Very pleased with how they turned out!!
.
2. And I have worked on attachment schemes.
a. Knees get garden-variety velcro (literally, meant for tying up plants!) with buckles that cover it with a pleather strap:
.
.
b. Which makes them pants agnostic:
.
c. Vambraces have their own attachment scheme, but needed to grip my forearms better - I bought the smallest size from April Storm Props, and they still want to rotate around my arms when I move - so I used weather stripping:
.
d. And my helmet wanted to slide around and fall off if I bent over, so I have mitigated that with some of the thin salvaged elastic I used on my vest:
.
It still shifts some, but won't fall completely off in movement. I need to get some washers to prevent it popping off my chicago screws in taking it off: putting it on, it holds fine.
.
3. I have started assembly of my first bayonnet:
 a. Patterns and pieces
(https://i.imgur.com/b2M49NK.jpg)
.
b. Hilt assembled
(https://i.imgur.com/Kz6oIM0.jpg)
.
c. Specific question: As a bayonnet, it should have a ring as a sort of guard on the hilt, but do you think I should add it or leave it off?
.
I think it comes down to this: are bayonnets too real-life-military-specific to use as the pattern for vibro-blades?
Title: Maul Mando WIP - Now Wearable!
Post by: D'shon Lorra on Apr 07, 2021, 12:09 AM
This past weekend, I reached the goal I originally had for last May the 4th: my kit is wearable. I am so excited!! It is not ready for application for OM, but I can see the way to get there now. I wanted a set of (mostly) unweathered pictures for reference as I weather it all.
.
1. First, in the originally-planned scrub-based flight suit
a. And the cape
(https://i.imgur.com/PGwZMJQ.jpg)
.
b. showing the Mauled Deathwatch emblem I came up with
(https://i.imgur.com/bcwFQR1.jpg)
.
c. Proper right side view
(https://i.imgur.com/8SYVv1k.jpg)
.
d. Proper left side view
(https://i.imgur.com/otxVj4b.jpg)
.
e. Proper back shot, sporting the experimentally weathered flat backplate
(https://i.imgur.com/kCyagx2.jpg)
.
f. And my favorite almost-front view
(https://i.imgur.com/DFEWJD4.jpg)
.
2. With the now-preferred spandex based flight suit (can you believe it entered my home as pink thermal underwear?!?)
a. Proper front shot, no cape
(https://i.imgur.com/xWYGZtO.jpg)
.
b. right side
(https://i.imgur.com/NXZkw19.jpg)
.
c. left
(https://i.imgur.com/rLgD5gY.jpg)
.
d. back, sporting the unweathered curvy plate
(https://i.imgur.com/NnGMKCw.jpg)
.
e. helmetless
(https://i.imgur.com/tgWxPer.jpg)
.
I could wear this in public and feel proud of it.  :maul:
.
Now, to replace all that underlying pale velcro with black, improve the spacing of plates, sort out my jumble of too-dark waist items, improve the cape snap system, and ... the list gets more refined but not shorter...

Great progress so far! I know we've been in touch in messenger quite a bit, but this really is one of the best places to poke us to give detailed feedback as we can edit and keep track of posts in here fairly easily. Now the following fix list is not exhaustive, and I don't want it to be. You'll find that in the early stages it is better to focus on things in groups or related items to keep things digestible, as well as manageable. Sometimes doing xyz to flakvest, or moving one plate affects another item, placement or spacing. That said, let's dive in. I'm going to focus on upper-body feedback in this first round. We'll address, cape/back, and lower body separately.

Photos: My advise is to try to minimize the photos with "flair". Try to stick to the Approval required shots only when seeking full kit progress feedback. There's nothing wrong with fun shots! But they can clutter up and delay the feedback process because we have to filter those out when trying to do our detailed review. There will be plenty of time to be awesome in kit when we get over the finish line or during stress-test fit events. Natural lighting is perfect, I can see exactly the details I need to for the moment.

Finally able to reengage the forum after a long hiatus. I have not been idle!
-:-:-:- May -:-:-:-
1. Extended the vambraces to cover more of each forearm.
a. Extension base, dart carrier (before I decided to wear the darts on the right!)
.
b. Extension base, blade carrier (pre-switch)
.
c. With Apoxie Scuplt shaping (roughed up the paint job first, to be sure it sticks)
.
d. Blade carrier, shaped after the clay cured
(https://i.imgur.com/1OKYMPd.jpg)
.
e. Dart carrier, shaped
(https://i.imgur.com/1xgfzSv.jpg)
.
2. Made myself a mythosaur pendant, for fun!
a. Wet Apoxie Sculpt (used a segment of straw to maintain the hole for a paracord to pass through)
.
b. Cured
(https://i.imgur.com/xsAtiCZ.jpg)
.
c. Painted during the last push to finish painting
(https://i.imgur.com/JHkKLJX.jpg)
.
3. Made the last push to finish painting everything
a. Primer on bigger shoulder bells and extended vambraces
(https://i.imgur.com/6J3t2WI.jpg)
.
b. Dark undercoat
(https://i.imgur.com/ysuJtil.jpg)
.
c. Metallic
(https://i.imgur.com/HIV2YYq.jpg)
.
d. Night Owl Blue
(https://i.imgur.com/EbP66Ci.jpg)
.
e. Final Red
(https://i.imgur.com/hQG2sZM.jpg)
.
f. For posterity, the colors I used (I started with 3 cans of each, except the beige, and ended up with less than one can of each when I was done.)
.
Notice I had decided the paint doesn't have to be perfect on the vambraces, because I'm going to sand it halfway off, anyway. This paint process was much less stressful than all the earlier ones, because of my earlier weathering experiments.
4. Finished the new shoulder bells in prep for the May armor party (then went off and left them at home instead of getting them to the party!)
a. New left bell prepared for stencil painting, for comparison to the old bell - the Vizsla mark on the new one is as big as the original bell
(https://i.imgur.com/mtdRVq8.jpg)
.
b. Right bells, for size comparison
(https://i.imgur.com/ThrvfC6.jpg)
.
c. No more bobble-head!
Edited to add: Failed to note earlier that Dakota had an epiphany during the armor party! She asked Chuck, who was hosting, "Do you have any foam?" and he produced a sheet of egg carton-style padding. She cut a chunk out and shoved it up under my vest, lifting my breastplates and collar into a solid uni-boob and making all the spacing work. Go Dakota! You are brilliant.

.
5. Weathered the lower body
a. Knees before
(https://i.imgur.com/rrnG2BR.jpg)
.
b. Knees after sanding and rub-n-buff
(https://i.imgur.com/uS1uRm5.jpg)
.
c. Knees after black wash
(https://i.imgur.com/fQQtPsN.jpg)
.
d. Everything else, done!
.
e. And all the lower body plates together, now completely pants- and boots-agnostic - I'm pretty proud of that!
.
-:-:-:- June -:-:-:-
The month of June was not my friend. Nor was it a friend to anyone in my immediate family, human and fur-baby alike. 'Nuff said.
.
-:-:-:- July -:-:-:-
I made it back from the fiasco that was June in the evening on the 15th of July. Already wa-ay negative in PTO at work, I decided I might as well take the entire day of the 16th off for sanity. I spent several hours (1pm-8:30pm) sewing velcro on my vest per the lines sketched on it by Dakota and Michael at the armor party in May. Turns out, you can sew the heavy-duty, sticky-back velcro on cloth without bending or breaking the needle if you have Albolene cream and patience. Lots of both. (And alcohol, alcohol helps, too.) Determined to be able to wear my kit to Comicpalooza, because I'd managed to get home in time, I then worked on weathering the upper body plates, and cleaning up the paint-dust mess in my kitchen, until 3:30am Saturday.
.
1. Shoulder bells

.
8. So, I went to Comicpalooza and wore my unfinished kit with pride. Several people stopped me to take pics with me, and the little boys going, "Whoa! That's a Maul Mando!" absolutely made my day. They asked their Dad to take a photo of each of them with me. I, in turn, stopped two people and asked my riduur to take one for me.
a. I met a Din Djarin
(https://i.imgur.com/yesewzr.jpg)
.
b. and a post-Clone Wars Obi-Wan
(https://i.imgur.com/LatPuNX.jpg)
.
That day made me happy. More exhausted, but happy. I am now working on the bayonets - because no one has told me not to - and chewing on what I really want my belt/sash to look like. Jury is out. I was very comfortable in my kit that day as it was, so wanting to make sure I don't add a belt that hinders my movement any more than what I already have.

This time, I am cross-posting here from the thread in Clan Arqet's area! https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=199288
-:-:-:-:-
Update, with a specific question at the very end:
Chuck advised me to go on Amazon for a girth belt to use as a waist sash, and I have had my way with it. The belt: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009SQFXO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.
Step one was to dye it, which proved harder than I thought it should be. I followed the instructions on these two bottles of dye to the letter (to the best of my ability with a big pot of water in a gas oven) and that did not touch its color.
.
First try result:
.
So I tried again with it on a cookie sheet with no water, just the dye drizzled on. I left it in there for over 5 hours and am convinced some of the color it took on is heat damage. (Also, with the D-rings removed from the center reinforcement.)
Shown there with the undyed leather scraps I cobbled together for the "buckle" section.
.
I poured red wine on both and baked them again. That made little difference.
.
I went after the "buckle" with the dyes - this is the 'before' picture, showing just the wine stain on that.
.
Dabbing dye on it with cotton balls worked great! I topped it off with Miracle Shoe Balsam:
.
I then decided to add a belt over top using the same strap and buckles as on the rest of my kit.
.
And it wanted an iron heart.
.
That iron hear is just velcroed on over top of the center buckle. Velcro loop half is pinned in place.
.
.
Very firmly.
.
-:-:-:-:-
I have also been busy on the bayonets.
Reminder: they are constructed of layers of 3mm sintra, a full tang 'blade' layer with two layers per side for the hilts.
.
After giving up trying to make their bayonet lugs identical by hand, it occurred to me that I could use these saved bits to at least give them the same inner diameter and overall look:
.
These are the little plastic protectors that come with this style of shelf: https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-Black-5-Tier-Steel-Wire-Shelving-Unit-36-in-W-x-72-in-H-x-16-in-D-21656PS-1/203846576. I have bought several different varieties over the years and usually save these little plastic rings. Now, I know why.  ;D
.
I was going to make sintra scabbards for them, but found my patience for it was lacking. The bag of leather scraps I bought at the craft store had plenty to make sheaths, but it was thin, so I split the difference and put the sheath over the rough scabbard forms I had started.
.
.
Candle wax on embroidery floss worked fine for sewing this thin leather.
.
They'll ride in my spats just fine.
.
Then, I got the bright idea to rubber coat the bayonets entirely.
.
And to wrap their hilts in paracord. One red, to match the quarterstaff, and one coyote to match my honor braid.
.
.
I am very pleased with them so far.
.
When I rubber coated them, my original plan was to go back after and file down the blade edges and make them shiny with rub-n-buff, here:
.
But before I do that, I must ask: is that too realistic? Would it better for trooping if I left them obviously black and not edged?

Mostly a cross-post from the thread in Clan Arqet

After the comments received there, I will probably talk myself into edging the bayonet blades... they need to be as close to proper weapons as possible, to stand in for our Religious Artifacts, after all.   :maul:

Now for pre-pre-App pics, kindly taken by clan vode on Sunday:

1. Front -

.
2. Right -

4. Left -

5. Arms up -

.
6. Helmetless -
(https://i.imgur.com/hsRIadl.jpg)
.
7. Back with no cape -
(https://i.imgur.com/SnEeQie.jpg)
.

I have since sewn the strips of the sash together so they cannot crisscross or split up as much as they were doing that day, put some weathering and more accessories on the newest belt, and gone after my cape with three cans of paint and a lighter. The lighter seems to have been the real epiphany: dusting the cape with spray paint provided very subtle weathering, like the black wash on my plates, where the lighter flame does some heavy wear and tear, analogous to the sandpaper’s role for the plates.

When I am satisfied that the paint dust has cured on the cape, I’ll put it on and get some more pics with it.

What a cool build! I've always loved the Maul-dalorians, and it's cute that the kids recognized you as such. :D I think my favorite detail is the Nite Owl blue underneath, there's a story!

I agree with your clan, go with the edged bayonets to complete the look! If an event you troop is concerned about weapons, they'll usually check and tag them individually.

Best of luck with pre-app!

Thank you, Arco'thyel! That was some heady positive reinforcement, being recognized immediately. Made my day!

An update, cross-posted from my entry in the Arqet clan area:

Thank you for the feedback! Not ready to deal with full kit pics again yet - last attempt was in evening twilight and the whole thing appears purple. Kind of a cool effect, but not how it really looks in person. Definitely need someone knowledgeable about our armor to take the pics, to help me get the spacing right. I cannot adjust the upper body plates myself while wearing it all.

Vambrace hinges, because that tongue-in-groove system got on my last nerve! One of them jumped ship at Comicpalooza, thankfully not in a crowd, and they were so difficult on the day of the twilight photo that I swore they had to be fixed.

My patience for it was about 3 hours: it was great fun, I know I made some kids (and kids at heart!) very happy, posing for pics and such, but it was exhausting. I learned the mic/speaker setup works great in confined spaces, and is nearly unintelligible when I am out in the open, even at full volume. I learned that the clip on the back of the speaker is a terrible attachment mechanism and must be replaced. I learned that the battery pack of the fan is unreliable in its current state and needs a secondary way to hold it together. I learned that being in a helmet conveys celebrity status that thankfully disappears when one changes into normal ren fest garb. I learned that no way are the thigh plates going to be pants-agnostic: they are too heavy and need a velcro patch on the front of each thigh. I can live with that.
.
I am really glad I chose to go in the alternate black flight suit I have been working on, otherwise I would not have learned that about the thigh plates because the mottled brown flight suit has that patch from before the pleather-over-velcro straps became a thing.
.
Sadly, I have no pics from ren fair yet.
.
I do have pics of both flight suits from when I was talking myself into it. I shared then with my Ruus'Alor Sol'yc and have been given the thumbs-up to proceed to application photos. So, I count these as my official pre-app photos.

The black had been hit with four dustings of spray paint by then: beige, metallic, black rubber, and green. And none of it showed up in the pics.

So, I went after it again with chalky white (closest thing I already have to the frosted window coating that has been recommended) and some textured black

Now, to sew those patches on the front of each thigh of the black pants, sort out how to secure the battery cover for the fan, and fit the speaker with a new attachment scheme.

Tell me I'm close now?  :maul:

Looking good there!  Hopefully you get through to full application soon!

If you want thigh plates that are “pants agnostic”, you need to secure them with straps, one at the top which hangs it from your belt, and a second set (or two) wrapped around the thigh. In other words, you would need to wear the thigh plates as if they were drop holsters.

Tramp, that is very like the idea I have flirted with to make them a "garter belt" to hang from. That may be in their future. Thanks!

It is done. A pair of jeans that were bound for the rag-bag have been cut down to make a lower-body plate carrier. It has the hip guards attached using chicago screws through hand-sewn button holes and the thigh guards attached by a large velco patch with the carrying straps reinforced with pleather and buckles. Check it out:

3. And on over yoga pants for giggles (without and with the cod and tail that now share the cod belt):

When I put the sash and belt-carried pouches on over top, I am sure the only part that will be visible will be the straps. I will eventually talk myself into sewing up the places that are currently safety pinned, but most likely no one will know but me.

The jeans will also live on in the patches now sewn on my black flight suit. Had to give it patches in roughly the same spots as the brown, and the not-quite worn-through denim at the edge of the worn-through places made patches that look like they have been through hell since becoming patches. Because the life of a Maul Mando has not been sunshine and rainbows in the years since Vizsla lost his head... :maul:

Cross-post from the thread in our Clan Arqet area.
Ruus’Alor Sol’yc took pictures for me on Sunday after much perfecting of placement for the alternate black flight suit. The mottled brown flight suit behaved so much better, it was unsettling: the looser fit caused the entire vest to settle correctly. We were both hot and tired after being out in the direct sunlight so long, so I am not surprised my helmetless pic looks like I fought my way there. It is appropriate.

After discussion with my Ruus’Alor, I am holding the staff in reserve, hoping to let it weather naturally as I practice with it and use it to smack stuff in my backyard.
.
These are meant to be application pics, so I will start that process tonight. Happy thoughts, please!

Feedback has been received and worked off.
1. The list
(https://i.imgur.com/FoVDcgA.jpg)
.
The backplate, that I thought I might have to recreate from scratch, proved very easy to make even more curvy: I put it in the oven up on a block so all four corners drooped. Being two layers of 3mm sintra, it developed a couple of new gaps that had to be filled in with apoxie sculpt after it cooled, but that worked out fine and made the edges that touch more weathered. Another Happy Accident.
.
I went after every bit of paracord with a sandblock, to fuzz it up, then dabbed fabric dye on to discolor it, but I don't think much of that detail shows in the photos, if any shows at all. If I get dinged for paracord weathering again, I'll just have to take closeups and resubmit.
.
If the mods I made to the bayonets to make them more vibro-blade than knife pass muster, I'll post those details another time. I think they look great from an arms' length, but not so much zoomed in.
.
2. The updated kit
- a. front
(https://i.imgur.com/5dvIic0.jpg)
(I swear I was standing as straight as I can, but my left shoulder looks like it is riding higher than my right and throwing the whole chest rig off. I added straps under the plates, to get the spacing of the collar pieces, breastplates, and iron heart just right before attaching them as a unit to the vest.)

Third round of photos have been sent to answer this feedback:

The session on the sunny day - yesterday - produced some really good shots, but some unusable, so a second session was done today in clouds. Hopefully the mix of the two session will not cause me trouble.

Paracord weather detail shots were taken to show the fuzziness and dye job:

Knees and Thigh plates do not touch, but from the height of someone standing, the angle from the front looking at all of me is usually enough to make it appear the outboard edges touch. Their distance from each other can be seen in the side views. These detail shots were sent to try to remedy that - my photographer was not limber enough to get down on her knees, so this is what I shared.

Cross-post from my thread in the  Clan Arqet (https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=199288.0) area:

Thank you all, vode, for the help and kindness over the last two years: it is done!
.
Happy email today:
.
Many thanks to everyone! And an extra shout out to Michael/Vhekadla Yustapir for one last pointer to the tune of "Why are you avoiding weathering the sash?" because I failed to understand that when the app team pointed out my "paracord belt", they meant my girth belt/sash, especially its brand new shiny mental buckles. I didn't make it from paracord, so I completely misunderstood them and was slow on the uptake. Doh!
.
So, it got hit with some dustings of paint (mostly for fun, but the black rubber coating I like did affect the buckles) and then the buckles got filed a bit and allowed to soak in bleach for a couple of hours.
Filing:

Bleaching:

.
To allow me to send in an additional 'after' picture of the belt:

It seems that was the final piece of the puzzle.  :maul:
