Title: Question: Edged Weapons
Post by: booyaalex on Nov 10, 2020, 01:13 PM
What do you guys usually use to make edged weapons that allowed at conventions and trooping? I'm in the process of making a beskad right now, but am unsure it I should make the blade with rigid Sintra or EVA foam and latex to make it a safe, European LARP-style sword.

What would be the safest bet?

Either is honestly ok - as long as the EVA foam and latex don't end up looking like actual just painted foam. Anything made of sintra is fine for conventions as are resin casted bladed weapons as they are still only plastic. No actual metal can be used to mimic bladed parts.

You can also make it from wood and use Bondo, Resin, or some other coating to make it look smooth. You can either spray-paint it metallic or use aluminum foil tape.

If I had the tools to cut and shape the wood, I would totally try this. Maybe in the future when I'm not in an apartment lol

I live in an apt and have those tools. $20 for a Stanley Tradecut saw, $5 for some sandpaper. Or see what assistance your local clan can provide. In a pinch, you can see if there’s a Makerspace nearby.

Hilariously, Adam Savage just posted a video on exactly this.

A scroll saw or jigsaw to cut the main blade shape.  A knife to carve the details and rough out the 'sharpened' edge.  A dremel to even out the details and edge.  Sandpaper to finish.  Aluminum tape to give it a metallic look.  Black paint to weather it.  Heavy duty scouring pad to remove most of the black paint.  End result: what you see in my signature.
