Title: The Armory
Post by: Vercopaanir on Dec 24, 2020, 09:28 PM
Finally starting my weapons thread.  I have been building some weapons right along with the rest of my armor but never started a thread.  Now that the armor is pretty much ready to go I will be focusing more on my armory and some other accessories.

Blaster/Tranq gun:  Inspired by a tranq gun, I slimmed it down and added a few bits to make it look more warzy.

Beskad:  I made two blades that I am calling beskads.  These were made with two different finishes.  I did not care for the second finish so it's only here for posterity not because I will ever carry it.

Vibro Swords:  Again I made a pair.  I like both but the one is more warzy then the other.

Spear:  With the release of The Mandalorian season 2, I have jumped onto the Mando's with spears bandwagon with both feet.  This one is still under construction.

Knives:  I have attempted several smaller knives.  The first one was inspired by the Mandalorian kal.  This one ended up too thick and the paint went a bit weird so I will never carry it but I it was a step in my learning process.  The second one came out better.  I may use it someday but right now it's an extra.  The third blade is currently housed in my left gauntlet.

Started a new weapons project two days ago.  I am going to make a Amban Sniper Rifle.  So I found a photo to scale and printed it via Microsoft paint program on multiple sheets to get it to the proper scale.  Then I traced out the parts that I planned on making out of wood.  I also watched YouTube vidoes on how others made this so I had a starting basis.  I got the stock, grip and pronged thing for the end traced and cut out of wood.

Due to having only a few power tools, I had to get creative in cutting out the curves.  My skill saw it too small to reach all the way through the 2X6 that the stock needed to be so I did a bunch of cuts with the miter saw ease when cutting and resigned myself to a lot of sanding.  I also used the table saw to rip as much of the excess out that I could safely.

Good work with that saw! What a tough way to go. If I can only have one saw make it a bandsaw. Looking good, though, can't wait to see it progress.

Yes!  A bandsaw will be my next saw.  I have spoken.

very nice stock so far!

Thanks!

Amban Sniper Rifle:  So I got the second stock cut out today and a bunch more sanding on all the pieces.  I tend to make things in pairs.  I think I might coat the prong thing in fiberglass resin to both strengthen and fill in the wood grain.  Still debating that bit but I think I may be sold on the idea.  I also cut some details into the forward grip pieces.

Alright so I covered the prongs with resin and hung them to dry.  I will sand down any drips and see what I think.

I also made some shells for the rifle.

It was a lovely day today.  Got some work done today on the rifle.  A bit more sanding on the stock.  Cut down the former shower curtain rod that died into the proper length for my barrel.  Approx...28"

Sanded down the epoxied prongs...

and stained the stock and grip with a walnut stain

Then I started templating and cutting out the pieces for the next section of the gun.  I am using my left over visor material as it is thiner then my 3mm PVC board but still heat formable so I can fold it over the stock where I need too.

I only tested heat forming one piece.  The rest will wait till the stain fully sets.  Still not sure how I want to do the inset design that is on the side of the gun.  May need to find someone to print me one.  TBD

Am. Rifle

Today I did some sanding and painting.  I sanded down the rod that I am using for the barrel to get rid of the rust spots and prep it for paint.

Then I got the first coat of primer on both the prongs and the barrels

Yesterday I cut out the second set of pieces for the middle section of the rifle.  This second set is a mix of PVC board and left over visor.

Also today I did a bit of shaping with my rotary tool and hand sanding to get a bit of a groove into the stock of the gun and shaped the front of the piece.

And finally I got the markings set for the second one but didn't start sanding in my shaping yet.

Nice!

Thanks!

Rifle:  I sanded down the couplings for the details on the barrel as well as the part of the scope mount.  I also started making my scope.  I plan to use magnets to hold it in place.  Mando removes his scope and uses it like a telescope at one point and I would like to have an interactive part to my weapon.  So magnets imbedded into the scope itself and then I will match them up with the mount.

I also traced out the pattern for the trigger onto 6mm Sintra.  I plan on cutting it out tomorrow as well as starting the heat forming of the main body pieces and maybe do some sanding on the second stock.

Amban Rifle:

Several tomorrows later... I did get the trigger cut out of the 6mm PVC board.  I also sanded and shaped it.  It hasn't been mounted yet because the base for the trigger still needs to be molded to the curve of the stock and I dropped my heat gun.  Dropped it in just the right way to shatter the ceramics inside the heating element.  So...waiting on a new one to arrive. I also bent the the trigger guards into the correct shape.

Before I broke my heat gun I did get some heat forming of the detail plates done.  I am not inlove with the visor material.  It will mold with heat but it goes form frozen to liquid in a flash and often hardens just a quickly.  It is almost impossible to get it smooth.

I got the smaller rods for under the barrel cut out.  I cut them out of a fiberglass fencing rod.  Additionally I got the holes drilled both in the stock and in the little end mount piece to hold these in place.

Then I went to work on getting the prongs mounted.  I used some PVC that I cut to length.  One uses schedule 40 the other uses CPVC both 3/4".  Shower rods are two different thicknesses so I had to adjust for that when building.  I was given a nice little rotary tool for Christmas, (YAY!) so I got to cut it out with the rotary attachment.  So much easier!!  I also cut in the little detail cut out into the prongs with the tool.

Once my heat gun is back online I will heat form the edges of the pipe to sit flush with the prongs.

So I got the trigger and the trigger guard mounted today.  Got the heat gun fixed and went to work.  Molded down the pipe to sit flush on the prongs and glued on a strip of wood to thicken that section of the stock.

I also got the magnets added to the split piece of pipe that will be attached to the stock/barrel area as the scope mount.

Amban Rifle: I did some work on the fiddly bits today.  I started with some 3/4" schedule 40 PVC pipe.  Cut them down into several thin rings and then sanded a beveled edge into them.  Then I cut them into thirds and glued them onto the pipe in the front section of my rifle.

Then I took a piece of wood that had been ripped down earlier when I cut out the stocks and used that to make the top piece for this section of the gun.  Glued it on with some wood glue.  Clamps are my friends.  I also added a little bit of an inset right behind this piece.  This is where the groove has been sanded in for the wires that I plan on putting here.

Then I started sanding down the edges to round it off a bit and make the two pieces mesh together better.  I also sanded a bit more on the added piece for the groove.

I still have to sand them some more with higher grits to get them smooth.

Rifle:  More work on this project.  I bent the wire to sit in the groove for one of them.

I did some more sanding.  I heat formed the pieces for the second one.  I like the mix of the visor material and Sintra.  I may go back and cut out some sintra pieces for the other one.

I glued on some of the decorative pieces.  And I added a beveled edges on some of the plates.

Alright some small progress.  I added some wood triangles  to fill in the gap between the end of the barrel and the stock.  I also cut out and glued on a little bit of wood to match the piece in the V area.  Then I coated the middle section with a layer of resin.  I also got the mount for my scope worked up and glued together.  It still has to be mounted but it's coming along.

A few pieces are being held on by gravity and prayers in this picture but it gives an overall progress check.

Finally got around to doing some sanding on the resin.  Got the little pieces sanded and the larger sections on the stock of the rifle.

Then I got a layer of primer on the prongs and mounts.

And primer then copper on the bits and pieces.

Wester 35: I ordered a pair of these beginning of December and they finally arrived.  My very first 3-D print ever.  Seriously never even touched the stuff before these arrived.  I have some sanding to do, which was expected.  I also couldn't help myself and patterned up a holster for them.  The leather I have on hand is really very thin and not sturdy enough on its own so I layered it.

The strap is layered with some leftover suede I had from a different project.
I also added a third layer of leather to the holster lower down to act as a more of a stop to keep the gun in the proper place in the holster.

I still need to add a strap to the back of the holster to run the tie down through.
Title: Re: The Armory

So I did some tweaking on my holster pattern.  It is a touch too big...admittedly I patterned it for either thicker leather or sintra not the thin stuff that I am using.   I added a few straps to it.  One on the inside of the holster to prevent any fall though and another on the top to keep it in the holster (Not that it is an issue, I may just choose to run around in full kit one day).  I haven't decided on the attachment method for this one yet, but I am thinking that I might add a loop to side onto the belt for now.

I also did some work on my scratch build Amban Sniper Rifles.  I got the scope for the second one fully assembled (was missing a piece) and then I set up the pieces for the mount ( ie. cut pieces of pipe to length, insert magnets, cut Sintra to length, sand).  I also started gluing on the detail pieces to the stock.

Thanks Ashohqin!

Update:

The sniper rifle is so many little things.  I added more plates to the one stock.  I added the bottom fill to the other.  I added some foam as fill for some of the larger gaps between the plates.  Some bondo on the exterior and then some sanding into shape is next for this one.

Got the fiberglass rods primed and painted

I also added some details to my scopes.

And I started sanding down my Westar-35's.  Not liking the sanding (Don't normally mind sanding but this rubs me the wrong way )...think I will switch to the fill method for the second one.

Alrighty Folks...here's more

Amban Sniper Rifle:  I added more bits and pieces.  Got some Bondo on the central area then sanded it smooth.  Then I started on some of the little details that are on the top of the piece.

And progress check...make sure everything still fits and looks good together

Then paint on the scopes and the stock of only one.

I also painted the prongs silver.  Then I did a clear coat on which I put graphite powder.  I did three layer of clear and graphite powder.  Then some purple and green to try and get that heat warped metal look.  Not quite sure I like it but it doesn't look too bad.

I also painted the extra bits for the second rifle gold.

Westar 35's:  I lightly coated these in resin the other day when I was doing the stock and today I began the sanding process.  This will take a few days to finish.

Westar 35's:  I got them both sanded down and then gave them a second light coat of resin.  Now the waiting game as they dry so that I can sand again.

I also remade my spear head.  The one I previously made is just a bit too big.  So I scaled down a new slimmer model.  Cut it out...sanded it....glued the layers together...coated it in resin and am now also waiting on this to dry.

And I put a bit more resin on the stock of the sniper rifles since I had it out and mixed up.

Got the new spear head finished and mounted.  Now I just need to decided how to carry it and maybe add a wrap on the handle.

I also got both scopes painted silver then a layer of graphite powder.  I may do a second layer of clear then more graphite to darken them to the same color as the prongs on the end of the rifle.

I worked on the rifle stocks as well.  I sanded then again...sprayed them silver and then a coat of graphite.

And I sanded one of my westars to the point that I wanted to get a layer of primer on to see how far I still need to go.

Print lines almost all gone!

Amban Sniper Rifle:

So close to being done just a few more details to go.  I still need to permanently add the forward grip and wrap the strapping around the grip and the second rod below the barrel.  I also need to add the second wrap in front of the scope but behind the grip.  Then just finish mounting everything.  I might leave the prong detachable to make it easier to get the gun to and from troops/events.

I sanded the stock with 500 grit sand paper, added another clear coat and more graphite powder.  Then I painted the wires gold and added a few little details to the little thing on the side (very descriptive I know).

I also added a second coat of clear and graphite to the scopes.

I also need to add my strap attachment method but that is coming in the mail soon!  :porg2:

Then weathering and it'll be ready to go.  I think I might wrap something around the stock right behind the trigger but I haven't decided yet.

I did things with stuff.

So I made the little bits to go around the barrel and 'attach' the rod to the barrel.  They're only coated in one layer of primer right now.

I glued the scope mount to the stock and stuck the backside of a rivet into it to help keep it in place.

Got the forward grip added and the strip of wood that I added to the underside stained.  Also touched up the stock with stain as a few spots have gotten dinged up as I moved it around and 'ahem' tested how it's working.

And I mounted the swivel clip for the strap that I will use to carry it when it's not in 'use'.

I know I made the prongs for the second one but I am thinking I might change the end attachment and make it a slightly different piece.  I don't need two very similar weapons but I still want them to be recognizable as Amban Snipers.  With this in mind I am thinking of extending the barrel a bit with a 'cover piece' that I will drill holes into and add a sorta vibro bayonet option to the underside.  Still debating this with myself at the moment.

I added the little round thing to the barrel and the rod and glued them down with contact cement.  Also got the leash attached to the rifle so I can sling it over my shoulder.  However, I encountered a problem.  It pulls to much on my bandolier.  The whole belt is pulled up about and inch so I might just give it it's own sling to carry it on troops.

And I did some more work on my westar-35's

I did my first ever rub and buff as the base silver layer.  This went on top of a glossy black coat.  Then I clear coated it, added graphite powder, another clear coat, more graphite power, and then a third layer.  I taped off different section between each layer to get a pattern on my piece.  I will still be painted the grip a matte black and I am thinking I will add a trophy to the back of the gun.  It feels like it needs something there.

And I finished the holster for it

I painted the handle on the Westar a matte black and weathered it with a bit of brown acrylic.  I think it came out pretty well.  I also weathered the holster that I had made for it.

Spear:

I remade the spear head a bit ago but it still needed some work.  I finally got around to wrapping the handle and both ends in suede.  I also weathered it by first hitting it with a sanding block, then rubbing handfuls of dirt into the leather and finally added some brown acrylic.  I think it came out pretty good.

The first pic is before weathering and with the shaft collapsed down into travel mode.

Thanks  :)  Money clips for the win. (cheap and easy)

Update:  I wanted a glowing stabby after seeing a few others so I decided to make one.  So I found a slim short flashlight.  Paired it with some plumbing fittings and dug out my plexiglass.  Grabbed my pattern from my old one (my current wooden one) and got started.

Plannning:

Glueing: The main clear plexiglass to the black plexiglass

I heated the grey fitting to make it a more oval shape where it joins with the blade.  Then I added  a sintra detail.  Then some more sintra on the handle bit to thicken it up so that there was less wiggle room.

The I grabbed some of the rings I had cut down when I was making my Amban Sniper and some left over cut downs from the bike spokes I used on my gauntlets.

I still need to add the silver tape above the black and bend the wire down into the blade.  I also have a few more greeblies to add and fill in a bit at the handle to make it look a bit more smoothly joined and block any light from seeping through later.

Thank you  :)  I love glowing things.  My sister and I just got a pair of lightsabers and have begun dueling.  We decided that I needed to learn how to fight with  my spear so we could shoot a short vid of a Jedi vs Mando fight.  But a glowy knife is just so much fun, especially in the dark.  ;D

Update:

I added the guard.  And attached the blade to the guard and first portion of the hilt.

Then I got a base primer layer then silver on the handle.

Then I did some glossy black on a few places

Followed by some graphite powder on the whole hilt and a bit on the machine parts of the emitter/vibro section of the blade

(https://i.imgur.com/4e1fzmT.jpg)(http://i.imgur.com/oTNQB7f.jpg) (https://imgur.com/oTNQB7f)

And of course I tested the glow

Some greeblie possibilities

Personally leaning more toward the second one but we'll see when I go to glue it on.

And that's it for now  :porg1:

Was the graphite powder messy? I've heard it's an awesome technique for getting that worn-metal look but it seems like it would get everywhere

Yes! Glowing stabbies are the best.  :P  Yes to the graphite powder.  It is messy, I only use it outside and usually on a piece of cardboard to try and keep it contained.  It is also not good to breathe so wear appropriate stuff.  ( I use a bandana, which doesn't really help but makes me feel better, since I despise the respirator)  I do love the final look  and its pretty cheap so I use it quite a bit as finish.

And my new knife is done!!!

I started by painting the patches of gold on the hilt and base of the blade, then mounted the wire and beads using super glue.

Then another layer of graphite powder after a light coat of clear spray paint to seal in the gold.

Then I added the gears inside the PVC pipe rings on the blade.

After which I addressed the hilt.  I had to pick my wrap...couldn't decide for a bit but after a family poll I decided on the grey.

Now I had left the top bit of the hilt a touch rough because I planned on wrapping that section as well, enter the red cotton cord.

Lastly came the weathering.  Some black and brown acrylics and Voilą! a glowing stabby

I finally made a sheath for the new blade.  Because I used the same pattern for both of my beskads it almost fit in to the same sheath as the other one, it was just a tiny bit too small at the top where I added the rings.

I always like to line my sheathes with either foam or felt to protect my paint job.

Then heat, fold and drill some holes for the lacing

The only lacing that I currently have on hand is either a tan or the white.  I went for the white since my kit colors are grey, white, red, black and gold.

The sheath was then weathered with a sanding block followed by my black and brown acrylic washes.

The beskad will be able to be mounted right onto the same holder as the other beskad.

I also worked on my zenji needle for the exotic weapon for the assassin brigade.  It's made out of an ebony chopstick that I repurposed after the kids snapped it.

I think it came out pretty good.

It's been a hot minute since I posted in this thread.  Here's what I am currently working on or have finished since I stopped posting.. :-[

Cuffs (technically not weapons but I felt like I could sneak them in here)

Amban Sniper 1.2 (remember way back when I was working on two of them, well finally got back to the second one)

Westar-35 1.2  (also got a pair and only finished one!???) got some primer on this one...might need another sanding before I am satisfied with the print line removal.

And I got a box of wonderful goodies from PSessum.  Some amazing 3-D prints to work with for my next few projects.

I just couldn't wait to get started so I did  :).  Cleaned up the print lines and sanded down the knives.  Also lightly sanded the shells and a did a tiny bit of sanding on the grav bombs.

Then I added my epoxy/resin to help smooth out and strengthen the prints.

Now I just have to wait for them to cure and do another sanding with a high grit paper before I can either add another layer or go right to paint.   :porg2:

Update:  Throwing knives and grav bombs

I got three layers of primer and sanding done and then one layer of silver.  Still want to add at least one more silver before I clear coat it and maybe add graphite powder.  Thinking about adding a thin wrap to the handle.   I don't wan to loose the skull though so maybe not.

Throwing Knives: I added a second layer of silver several days ago but the humidity changed causing the 'orange peel'.  I had to sand them all down and start over with the silver base coat.  I decided to try and give them the Beskar steel look that you see on the bars of beskar that are given to the Mandalorian in the show.  Here's the first attempt at it.  It still needs a layer of clear gloss and then another coat of graphite powder.  I also plan to paint the skull gold to match the rest of my kit.

I taped and painted the first one:

Oh! Yeah I do need a way to carry them don't I.   :blank:  I guess I can't just stare at them the whole time.  Will have to think about this for a bit and figure out where I still have room for stuff...

And Update

Throwing Knives:

I added two more layers of graphite and clear to the black and silver blade for a total of three layers.

(https://i.imgur.com/r9wffzo.jpg) Layer 2

(https://i.imgur.com/jetlkzs.jpg) Layer 3

Doesn't look quite right to me...so I grabbed my dark grey glossy spray paint for the second one.

Haven't added any clear or graphite to this one but I think I like it better.  The color difference isn't quite as extreme and I got the wavy lines a bit more consistent then with the first one.  I used a different method to cut my painters tape and it worked much better.

I still plan to put gold in the skull for both blades.

Throwing Knives:  I hand painted another color onto the inside of the grey one to give it a bit more variance and hopefully depth of color.  I should probably watch some painting videos because at this point I am just making things up and looking a pictures.    I also painted both the skulls gold!

(https://i.imgur.com/ZfZT7eq.jpg)   (https://i.imgur.com/jn6ZRUs.jpg)

Then I put another layer of graphite on the black one, sprayed a layer of clear on the grey one then coated it with graphite as well.

I think I found the pattern that I want to go with.  I drew out the full pattern before adding it to the knife unlike how I had with the other two.  It is a bit time consuming but I think the result is worth it.

(https://i.imgur.com/6xcEI7W.jpg)   (https://i.imgur.com/LVef0YV.jpg)

(https://i.imgur.com/84F5L4K.jpg)   (https://i.imgur.com/bHWKTAD.jpg)

Next was the grey and black spray paint.

(https://i.imgur.com/218ojKv.jpg)   (https://i.imgur.com/zOT4VoB.jpg)

Then I did a crazy and hand painted on the off gold and light silver highlights onto the grey blade.

(https://i.imgur.com/CDejNfj.jpg)   (https://i.imgur.com/x1CnlZB.jpg)

I experiment with several different colors on the black and didn't like any of them.  After a bit I remembered that I have a silver gel pen that I use to highlight when I am doing the coloring sheets with the ankle biters.  I ran and grabbed the pen.  It worked nearly perfectly.  (rubs off if I am not careful)  I used that to add the second set of silver lines to the grey and all the extra silver lines to the black.  Took about a third of the time that hand painted had taken.

(https://i.imgur.com/v0R5n7C.jpg)   (https://i.imgur.com/KCuVYPj.jpg)

(https://i.imgur.com/CuQvSzb.jpg)   (https://i.imgur.com/JBbv48W.jpg)

Sprayed both knives with a sealer (not the glossy clear) and added a coat of graphite.  I did this twice and here they are.  I think I will stick to the black version as I like that one better.

Grav Bombs: These had the same orange peel problem as my throwers, but with a bit of sanding (and a touch of filler) they have been repainted to the base silver color.  The red button will be next.

Shells:  I got these sanded down, a touch of filler and a few of the low spots I missed on the first pass and silver for them too!

Glow knife:  This is another amazing item I received from PSessum.  The blade itself illuminates red from a flashlight that fits into the handle.  I did some sanding to the blade but not too much because I didn't want to weaken it just knock down the highest points.  I don't want to use filler on the blade itself because I am pretty sure that will mess with the light diffusion through the blade.  So I coated it with resin to help fill in the print lines, add strength and hopefully not cause and problems with the light coming through.  I also sanded down the cross piece, handle and end cap.  All three had some filler added then sanded again.  I also sanded out some of the lines on the handle section to match the one bit that had separated when the print was made.  I coated all these pieces with resin as well.

Clan thrower:  So I glued the two halves of the blade together the other day and did a basic sanding.  I also touched up the sigil just a bit to ensure that I wouldn't loose any of the lines when I added the resin for strength.

Grav Charges/Bombs:  For the finish on these I added a coat of sealer, then graphite and repeated that process a second time to get the right shade of silver that I was going for.  After which they were taped and the button spray painted red.  I have a tiny bit of clean up where the tape wasn't 100% but they came out pretty good.  I still need to add the magnets to the back but that it just a few minutes work.

Clan Thrower:  I did a second layer of resin for this blade.  Then I painted it with two layers of sandable primer, after which I did the silver base coat.  It is ready for the beskar pattern.

You can see a few spots where I didn't get quite enough precision with the clean up on the sigil but I can fix that when I paint it gold later.

I also started the base/holder for the grav charges.  I decided to go with two charge holders since I really don't have a lot of waist space left to add things.  I may pass one pair on to my sister as we will be starting her kit in the near future.

Shells:  I got the lettering painted gold.  They just need the key chains added and they are ready to be handed out at the next con.

That is all looking AMAZING!   :like:

I'm digging the cartridges as key rings. That would def make a cool thing to hand out during a troop.

The holes made me think of a thing from the military. I think this is a sniper thing (I'm not a sniper but I heard the lore.) Long story short, when a person graduates sniper school they are called PIGs for Professionally Instructed Gunmen. If a sniper kills another sniper, they are a HOG or Hunter of Gunmen. They retrieve the round that was in the chamber of the other sniper's rifle and wear it as necklace. This is called a HOG's tooth and signifies the "bullet with your name on it." The belief is that everyone has a round with their name on it and until it is fired, they can't be killed, if they carry that round (the HOG's tooth) they are invincible.

So, if you added a cord to the round, it would look like you took out an enemy, and took the cartridge from their blaster and wear it as a trophy. Sorry, random thought.

Your stuff looks great tho.
