Title: Flak vest questions
Post by: Jakbandit37 on Feb 01, 2021, 07:24 PM
Never in my life did i think the vest would be the most difficult part of the kit (my money was on helmet for sure). So I have few questions and can't seem to find answers to regarding the vest and since they are so hard to see on fully formed kits (at least where my questions are concerned) I have no choice but to ask, Sorry if this stuff has been asked before.

1. Do ALL zippers need to be hidden from sight/ if the zipper matches the vest color does it need to be covered? ( I see some posts saying yes some saying no. the CRL's say the tab has to be hidden but what about the zipper itself)

2. I do not sew. Not that wont, i can't. my fingers will not work like that.  I have seen a bunch of tutorials on here but they're all way to complicated for me. (Start with a cup of tea, then grab your masters in costume design) I can however, deconstruct a article of clothing for it to suit my needs. A tactical vest seems to be the best option. This one in particular, anyone know if this would be acceptable? If so i have plans remove the buckles and line the sides with velcro

https://www.amazon.com/GZ-XINXING-Assurance-Tactical-Airsoft/dp/B077HQBM3M/ref=sr_1_36?crid=SHLZQDCYR2B8&dchild=1&keywords=paintball+vest+for+men&qid=1612214544&sprefix=paintball+vest+%2Caps%2C241&sr=8-36

Which leads into my next question

3. Do the shoulder plates need to be attached to the vest? I can't find the answer in the CRLs and a lot of the finished suits either have a vest that is mostly invisible making it hard to see where the armor is attached or clearly has a custom vest with shoulders sewn on. My direct inclination would be No, but I want to know for sure. And if the answer is yes how did they do it.

I know that the #1 answer to this issue is going to be " Ask one of our members who sell soft parts and buy a vest from them" which I would love to do. However, $$$ is an issue and all the professional vest i see are out of my price range.

Ru'Stor Rawr recently made a little tutorial (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=199280.0) on how to convert a Discreet Plate Carrier into a working flak vest, it looks cheaper than the one you showed, and definitely easier to modify.

Thank you, Vod.

I like this tutorial and you're totally right much more affordable.
